Motherhood and childbirth are often associated with gentleness and warmth. That’s because we see sanitized versions of these experiences in the popular media. These one-sided portrayals can alienate people who do not share those sentiments. They can make them feel guilty or ashamed for not being the beacon of kindness. A few recent projects have tried to break the stereotypes with chilling reality.
Shows like “Dead Ringers” and “This Is Going to Hurt” and movies like “The Lost Daughter” challenged these notions through their unfiltered perspective on these complicated experiences. “Nightbitch” (2024) is the latest addition to this list. Written and directed by Marielle Heller, it takes a black comedic approach to make a point about the pains of post-partum experience and motherhood. It stars Amy Adams as an unnamed mother, who starts feeling like she is turning into a dog.
Spoilers ahead.

Amy Adams spoke about tapping into her own experiences while shooting new film Nightbitch at its Los Angeles premiere Thursday night.
“I had just come off of a play, so I was already working on a deficit of sleep and being very tired. I had a lot of a sense memory of being a parent and sort of the exhaustion that comes with that,” Adams told The Hollywood Reporter on the carpet of the filming experience.
“I think, with this, I just wanted to meet the character where I was, and so it was wonderful to not have to pretend to be different than I was on set,” she said. “I feel like I really was able to channel my own experiences through this.”
Adams stars in writer-director Marielle Heller’s horror-comedy film, which follows the character known just as “Mother” as she deals with motherhood and realizes she might be turning into a dog.

Amy Adams and Scoot McNairy walked the red carpet ahead of the world premiere of their comedic thriller Nightbitch on Saturday at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The adaptation of Rachel Yoder’s acclaimed debut novel hails from Marielle Heller, the esteemed writer-director behind titles like A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Billed as a comedy for women and horror movie for men, Nightbitch tells the story of a stay-at-home mom (Adams) in the suburbs who slowly embraces the feral power deeply rooted in motherhood, as she becomes increasingly aware of the bizarre and unmistakeable signs that she may be turning into a canine.
Also in attendance at Saturday’s premiere were Heller, Yoder and stars Adrienne Rose White, Archana Rajan and 4-year-old twins Arleigh and Emmett Snowden. Adams was in attendance with husband Darren Le Gallo and daughter Aviana, while McNairy walked the...

Amy Adams believes she is slowly turning into a canine in Nightbitch, and here’s the trailer for the incoming movie.
Amy Adams has been nominated for an Academy Award six times – for Junebug, Doubt, The Fighter, The Master, Vice and American Hustle. It’s something of an oversight that none of them were for her pitch perfect performance as Disney princess Giselle in 2007’s Enchanted, a role she reprises in 2022 sequel Disenchanted.
Her next role in the dark comedy horror Nightbitch has exactly the kind of one line elevator pitch premise that could attract attention come awards season – a stressed mother begins to turn into a dog.
The synopsis reads as follows:
Nightbitch tells the story of a woman (Adams) thrown into the stay-at-home routine of raising a toddler in the suburbs, who slowly embraces the feral power deeply rooted in motherhood, as she becomes increasingly aware of the...

From The West Wing to The Good Doctor, there is no doubt Richard Schiff has been a part of some good television.
