Superman, as comic book-oriented and fictitious as it may be, also finds its roots in real-world drama, reflecting the modern-day social, geopolitical, and media problems to make the story more grounded and believable. In a twist as predictable as a Hollywood sequel, conservative media and alt-right commentators have made it their mission to ridicule the entertainment industry’s awards circuit. The Google-owned video platform said Thursday that more than 45 million people in the U.S. watched election-related content on Tuesday, Nov. 5. That is an enormous number, and while obviously not everyone was watching live videos in primetime, it suggests that tens of millions of people were nonetheless turning to YouTube for election-relayed information.

For comparison, Nielsen said that an average of 42.29 million viewers tuned in across 18 cable and broadcast networks from 7-11 p.m. Et. The YouTube data is not an exact comparison, but still shows a scale that is only matched by traditional TV.

Those on the perimeter raised red flags when they felt each debate had run its course.

It wasn’t a town hall or a cable news panel, and it didn’t air on CNN, Fox or MSNBC. Actually, the encounter didn’t air on television at all. Rather, it was the sixth episode of hit YouTube series “Surrounded,” from Jubilee Media, the independent L.A. production company behind other social experiments like “Middle Ground” and “Swipe or Swap.”

With episode titles like “Can 1 Woke Teen Survive 20 Trump Supporters?” and “Can 25 Liberal College Students Outsmart 1 Conservative?,” the series has gone viral since its September debut, racking up more than 50 million views on YouTube and dominating social media feeds.

In June 2023, YouTube made the baffling decision to reverse its ban on election misinformation and start allowing people to spread lies about the outcome of the 2020 presidential race. Since then, surprising no one, the platform has become a megaphone for far-right conspiracy theorists to crow about how Donald Trump was robbed of his rightful re-election, according to a new report from The New York Times.

YouTube’s reasoning for allowing people to claim the 2020 election was rigged in favor of Democrats was, “we find that while removing this content does curb some misinformation, it could also have the unintended effect of curtailing political speech without meaningfully reducing the risk of violence or other real-world harm.”

“The ability to openly debate political ideas, even those that are controversial or based on disproven assumptions, is core to a functioning democratic society–especially in the midst of election season,” it said.
