Glasgow Film Festival sets full 2023 line-up, Nida Manzoor’s ‘Polite Society’ to close the festival

Six world premieres, 16 European and international premieres and 70 UK premieres feature in the line-up

Glasgow Film Festival (Gff) has unveiled the full line-up for its 19th edition, taking place March 1-12, with the UK premiere of Nida Manzoor’s Sundance title Polite Society the closing night film.

The festival will screen 123 features, including six world premieres, 16 European and international premieres and 70 UK premieres.

Polite Society is the feature debut of Screen Star of Tomorrow 2021 Nida Manzoor, who created Channel 4 and Peacock series We Are Lady Parts.

Inside the Creation of the Terrifying Aliens of ‘The Tomorrow War’

If you’ve seen Amazon Prime Video’s “The Tomorrow War,” then you’re familiar with the menacing alien creature that wreaks havoc on society.

Director Chris McKay’s new futuristic action film stars Chris Pratt as Dan Forester and Yvonne Strahovski as Colonel Muri Forester — time travelers who arrive from the year 2051 to warn humanity that a future war is being lost to an alien race, the White Spikes, who threaten to end the existence of mankind.

Visual effects supervisor James Price and creature designer Ken Barthelmey worked together to bring the menace to life. Price, who has worked for over 27 years in VFX including providing shots for “Robocop” and “Pacific Rim,” said developing the look of the White Spikes was their biggest challenge. The other challenge was to make sure the creature appeared real, while “designing something that was fresh and new.”

Edinburgh Film Festival unveils 2019 industry programme
must Line-up include sessions on casting, ethical documentary filmmaking and Spain focus.

The industry programme for this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff, June 19-30) has been revealed.

The highlights include a session titled ‘Casting Light on Casting Directors’, featuring members of the Casting Society of America’s European chapter.

‘Minding Non-Fiction’, co-hosted by the Scottish Documentary Institute, will look at ethical documentary filmmaking and best practices for the mental health and wellbeing of both filmmaker and subject.

A survivor of the Lampedusa tragedy speaks in Morgan Knibbe's Shipwreck

The Glasgow Short Film Festival drew to a close today with its awards ceremony. Duncan Cowles received the Scottish Award for Directed By Tweedie, whilst special mention went to Cailleach. Morgan Knibbe won the Bill Douglas Award for best International Short Film for Shipwreck, about a survivor of the sinking that saw hundreds of Eritreans drown off the coast of Lampedusa.

The Channel 4 Innovation in Storytelling award went to Monkey Love Experiments directors Will Anderson and Ainslie Henderson, whilst the International Audience Award was won by Don Hertzfeld's World Of Tomorrow, though Don himself (best know for providing voices in The Simpsons) was incommunicado and does not yet know of his success. The Scottish Audience award was won by Zam Salim for Dropping Off Michael and accepted by writer and producer James Price, who was extremely excited about their success.
