Veeps to Premiere Music-Led Indie Dramedy ‘Nora’ as the Streaming Platform Expands to Include Films (Exclusive)
Image
Veeps, the live-streaming platform co-founded by Joel and Benji Madden and owned by Live Nation, has expanded its business to include narrative films, with the indie motherhood dramedy “Nora” among the first available titles.

Following a theatrical release by Suncatcher Productions and Blonde Dog Productions, “Nora” will make its global streaming debut via Veeps on Saturday, May 24.

The feature film — written, directed by and starring Anna Campbell — follows Nora, a singer-songwriter who gives up her music career and settles in suburbia to raise her child. But, as the film’s logline explains, “her dreams have other plans” — meaning that, as Nora contends with a precocious child, a new home and navigating the PTA moms, her musical aspirations live on through whimsical music video fantasies that capture her truth.

Described as “a visceral portrait of a woman in rediscovery,” the lyrical film premiered in March at the Cinequest Film Festival, where...

Heels takes the three count and gets canceled by Starz along with Run the World and Blindspotting
Image
The premium cable movie channel Starz has reportedly canceled three of their shows plus one upcoming project, according to Deadline. Starz will no longer be continuing the run of the wrestling drama Heels, as well as Run the World and Blindspotting. In addition, the channel has also decided not to proceed with The Venery of Samantha Bird. Heels, Run the World and Blindspotting have all completed two seasons, but The Venery of Samantha Bird was in the middle of production when the show paused for the strikes. Two episodes were left to film in the season.

Heels was produced by Lionsgate and Paramount Network Television and the plot, per Deadline, “revolves around the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small-town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals (Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig) war...

‘Heels’, ‘Run The World’ & ‘Blindspotting’ Axed At Starz; ‘The Venery of Samantha Bird’ Not Moving Forward
Image
Starz has axed three existing drama series and one upcoming project.

The network has binned Heels, Run The World and Blindspotting as well as not moving forward with The Venery of Samantha Bird.

Heels, Run The World and Blindspotting all aired two seasons and The Venery of Samantha Bird paused production in May due to the strikes with two episodes left to film.

Heels revolves around the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small-town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals (Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig) war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel. But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind.

Image
Starz is canceling four of its series, Variety has learned exclusively. Specifically, “Heels,” “Run the World,” and “Blindspotting” will not get new seasons at the cable network, while “The Venery of Samantha Bird” Season 1 is being scrapped without airing.

“Heels,” “Run the World,” and “Blindspotting” all recently aired their second season at Starz, while “The Venery of Samantha Bird” was in production on its first season. Production was shut down, however, at the onset of the WGA strike. It was reported at the time that only two episodes of the first season were left to shoot.

“The Venery of Samantha Bird” was to star Katherine Langford as the title character. Per the official logline, “Samantha, while visiting family in New England, reconnects with her childhood sweetheart and falls headlong into a seemingly perfect storybook romance. The "Run the World" Cast Tease the Girls "All Take Risks" in Season 2: "Jumping Off Cliffs Together"
Image
It's hard to believe it's been two years since Starz's "Run the World" first hit our TV screens - even the cast are surprised when they think about the show's long hiatus. But the good news is the Harlem-set dramedy is finally back for season two, which kicked off on May 26, and 30-something-year-old besties Whitney (Amber Stevens West), Renee (Bresha Webb), and Sondi (Corbin Reid) are ready to get back into the swing of things. Of course, the half-hour series returns for much more drama, sisterhood, and romance following season one's wild finale, but that's not all viewers can look forward to.

"We just leaned in harder because we became even closer friends during the break in between, so it was easy to dive right back in."

"There's some fun stuff that happens this season," Stevens West teases to Popsugar. "There are the big things that are fun this...

‘Run the World’ Is Smart, Vibrant Update of NYC Relationship Dramedies: TV Review
Image
As I pressed play on the first episode of “Run the World,” I wasn’t intending to mainline the entire eight-episode season in one greedy gulp. But as a blessedly rare warm New York City breeze floated through my open window, Leigh Davenport’s lush new series about four friends having a vivid, game-changing Harlem summer proved too good and fitting to resist.

“Run the World,” premiering May 16 on Starz, is immediately self-aware of its place in the TV canon, particularly as a witty dramedy about four thirty-something women falling in and out of love and lust in New York. In the pilot, frustrated writer Ella (Andrea Bordeaux) fondly refers to her on and off boyfriend Anderson (Nick Sagar) as her “Big,” as in the infamous “Mr. Big” who drove Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw so wild throughout “Sex and the City.” But on “Run the World,” Ella’s...

Late in the premiere of the new Starz dramedy Run the World, Ella (Andrea Bordeaux) reveals to her old friend Sondi (Corbin Reid) that her on-again, off-again ex Anderson (Nick Sagar) is back in town. Sondi, exasperated, suggests she may have to have sex with Anderson herself to understand what Ella sees in him. “He’s my Big!” Ella explains — as in Mr. Big, the on-again, off-again lover of Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City. Like Carrie, Ella is a writer living in Manhattan (Harlem instead of the Upper...

‘The Booksellers’ Film Review: Cinematic Ode to Bibliophiles Everywhere Offers a Loving, Literary Tour of New York
Maurice Sendak
It may seem strange to suggest that the greatest discovery for bibliophiles this week is actually a movie. But as Maurice Sendak said, “There’s so much more to a book than just the reading.”

D.W. Young’s “The Booksellers” pays warm-hearted tribute to the reading, but also the shopping, the rifling, the obsessing, the complaining, the dreaming, the list-making, the shelf-organizing, and everything else book-lovers love to do.

Another one of those impulsive habits is the collecting of random and surprising facts, and we learn a great many of them in Young’s lovely documentary. But among the most notable is this: In the 1950s, there were 368 bookstores in New York City.

Also Read: Where's the Black Bridget Jones? Why It's So Hard to Find Diverse Romance Stories (Guest Blog)

368! Today, there are 79. And admit it: even that number now sounds surprisingly high. Once, there were nearly half that many on 4th Avenue alone.

Coin Heist Review
If The Breakfast Club and Ocean’s 11 were shoved into Seth Brundle’s telepods, Coin Heist is the unholy abomination that would stagger out the other end, pressing a shotgun to its malformed head and begging to be put out of its misery.

Based on the young adult novel by Elisa Ludwig, Coin Heist opens with a group of students on a field trip to the Us Mint, their slack-jawed un-enthusiasm only briefly lifting when the cops show up and drag their principal away in handcuffs. It turns out he’s embezzled $10 million from the school funding, putting the very institution itself in jeopardy.

And so, hacker Alice (Alexis G. Zall), athlete Benny (Jay Walker). honor student Dakota (Sasha Pieterse) and slacker (and the embezzling principal’s son) Jason (Alex Saxon), band together to save the school. Their plan: break into the Us Mint, secretly manufacture quarters with a flaw...

Fresh off its announcement that a second season of the Miranda Sings sitcom Haters Back Off is coming in 2017, Netflix is poised to expand its slate of projects involving digital creators like Colleen Ballinger and Cameron Dallas.

On Jan. 6, Netflix will exclusively premiere Coin Heist, a feature film about four teens from a Philadelphia prep school who hatch a plan to rob the U.S. Mint of $10 million during a class field trip. Though it’s not necessarily an influencer-driven projects, two digital creators occupy starring rolls: YouTube creator Alexis G. Zall and Viner Jay Walker. Official Trailer for Emily Hagins' 'Coin Heist' Film Coming to Netflix
"You realize if this doesn't go perfectly, we are all going to jail." Netflix has debuted a trailer for the film Coin Heist, the latest little indie from young filmmaker Emily Hagins out of Austin. We've featured her work before, including her most recent film before this, titled Grow Up Tony Phillips. Coin Heist is indeed about a "coin heist" - four different high school kids decide to team up and figure out a way to break into the U.S. Mint and pay off a big debt by planting flawed coins.
