Exclusive: Viaplay has set YA drama Boys as its latest Danish original, a coming-of-age series from 27-year-old Jonas Risvig.

Risvig will create and direct the eight-parter, which has just wrapped filming in the Danish town of Silkeborg and is set to air next year as one of 60 Viaplay originals across Europe.

Based on Risvig’s experience of growing up in a small Danish town, REinvent Studios’ drama follows a group of 10 young men who gather every week in Silkeborg to sing in a church choir. Over the years, the group has formed a close bond, and after the bells fall silent, they meet to push their limits and test the forbidden pleasures of adult life. But when one of the boys drowns under mysterious circumstances, their unity and loyalty are put to the ultimate test.

The youthful cast includes Andrea Gadeberg (Riders Of Justice), Sylvester Byder (Deliver Us) and Albert Rudbeck (Another Round).

The story is about six boys and girls entering a new school year and each finding their own challenges and limits.

Samuel Goldwyn Films has unveiled an official US trailer for a WWII resistance movement film from Denmark called Into the Darkness (or De forbandede år in Danish meaning The Damned Years), from filmmaker Anders Refn. This already opened in Denmark early last year, and is finally getting a VOD release in the US this May. Denmark, April 1940. Danish industrialist (portrayed by Jesper Christensen of James Bond fame), cooperates and profits from the German occupation of Denmark. While his family finds themselves on opposite sides of the conflict. The film also seems to examine the difference between generations, and how one of the sons becomes a resistance fighter in Denmark during WWII. The cast includes Bodil Jørgensen, Mads Reuther, Gustav Dyekjær Giese, Sara Viktoria Bjerregaard, Lue Dittmann Støvelbæk, and Sylvester Byder. This looks like a potent film about guilt and the things that people do under pressure.

Vertigo Releasing has acquired UK and Ireland rights to Anders Refn’s war drama Into The Darkness from Odin’s Eye Entertainment.

The distributor plans to release the film on digital platforms from March 5, as cinemas remain closed due to pandemic restrictions. The feature had previously been picked up by Kaleidoscope Film Distribution but rights have since reverted back to Odin’s Eye.

Australia’s Odin’s Eye Entertainment (Oee) has closed a brace of distribution deals for Danish box office hit Into The Darkness.

The war drama, directed by Anders Refn, has been picked up by Kaleidoscope Film Distribution for UK and Rialto Distribution for Australia and New Zealand. Both are planning to release the film theatrically, subject to the ongoing easing of Covid-19 restrictions.

Danish star Trine Dyrholm will follow her award-winning role in Sundance award winner Queen Of Hearts by headlining the cast of Henrik Ruben Genz’s Erna At War.

She will play a powerful woman who tries to save her mentally disabled son during the First World War. The film is set in 1918, on the borderland between Germany and Denmark, where her son is mistakenly enrolled for the Prussian Army. She disguises herself as a man to join his regiment and keep her son safe.
