While the world has been fascinated with the mysteries of ancient Egypt since Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon stole all the credit for the glorious reveal of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922 from the local diggers and historians, the truth of those mysteries rest better in the hands of Egyptians today. And there are still mysteries and wonders aplenty, from the way its colorful mythology slowly blended — syncretized — with the Roman occupiers that gradually wore away the country's golden monarchy, to its early understandings of science and math that remain lost.
It's a tough period of time for amateur historians who love the occasional pop culture dive; unlike other history buffs with their Medieval costume dramas and the upcoming Christopher Nolan-helmed version of "The Odyssey," there's not much that truly digs into the dynastic periods of Egypt. The idea blended Egyptian culture and ancient alien concepts with interplanetary adventure. Studios didn’t get it. The producer didn’t like the pacing. The first test screening didn’t go well. But when the film reached theatres, it was a hit, spawning a franchise that would go on for years and consist of multiple novels and TV shows. Now, we’re going back to the beginning to find out What Happened to Stargate.
Filmmaker Roland Emmerich was fascinated with Egyptian culture and architecture. While in film school, he had an idea for a story about the discovery of a space ship, buried under the Great Pyramid. The revelation that ancient Egyptians were influenced by alien visitors. The story was too big and expensive to bring to the screen at that time, so Emmerich set it aside. 2002's epic The Scorpion King reinvented the titular character after his debut in The Mummy Returns. The Scorpion King depicts the ancient origins of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's character, "Mathayus of Akkad," who first appeared in 2001's The Mummy Returns as a villain. Unlike the second film in director Stephen Sommers's The Mummy movie series, the first of the Scorpion King movies features Mathayus's humble beginnings as an assassin-for-hire before turning into a legendary Akkadian hero.

Although the horror genre tends to terrify viewers, audiences occasionally look for something with a tinge of horror that does not go overboard on scares or gore. This usually occurs with series that blend horror with other genres like mystery, procedural, and coming-of-age stories to create something that has enough scares to keep things engaging while keeping viewers who are looking for something lighter happy. This mix of different styles creates something new in the process and leads to compelling and creepy horror shows that wont have audiences cowering in fear.
Many of the best horror TV shows ever made managed to present creepy narratives while not losing themselves in gory imagery or being packed with cheap jump scares. Long-running shows like Supernatural have gained devoted fanbases by appealing to many styles, while anthology series like Black Mirror mixed truly terrifying concepts with lighter, more palpable episodes. Dwayne Johnson starred in both Black Adam and DC League of Super-Pets, featuring similar post-credits scenes. Superman vs. Black Adam fights were teased in both movies, but never ended up happening in the Dceu. Johnson's heavy involvement in Black Adam and vision for the Dceu led to a complete overhaul of DC's cinematic plans.
Dwayne Johnson's Dceu career was short, yet in the space of three months, he managed to star in Black Adam and one other DC movie, with both featuring the same post-credits scene. Black Adam was released in October 2022 and featured Johnson in the titular role and as a producer for the movie. The movie came at a pivotal moment for the Dceu - which was floundering at the box office and earning mixed reviews with every release - and introduced several lesser-known characters to the Dceu canon, including the eponymous hero, Hawkman, and Atom Smasher.

“Sentinel,” by Hollywood legend Phil Tippett, and “Sister Inconnue,” the first solo directorial outing of Rkss’ Anouk Whissell, cold well be two highlights at a 2024 Cannes Frontières Platform that looks set to underscore the robust range of genre as it is embraced by Hollywood, big independents, horror devotees and auteurs alike.
Creator of creatures for “Star Wars” and “Jurassic Park,” Tippett may have terrified more people than anybody alive. If a teaser is anything to go by, “Sentinel,” a project, may well pick up on the style of 2021’s experimental and nightmarish stop motion/animation “Mad God.”
“Sentinel” features a battleground reminiscent of WWI hellish horror, giant bugs echoing “Starship Troopers,” Tippett’s last big job, attack droids and the statuesque figures of Osiris, Horus and Anubis, the last of which saves the hero, the gas-masked Sentinel, from a gruesome battlefield.

Fresh from Panic Fest 2024, The Ceremony is About to Begin unwraps itself like a meticulously preserved mummy, serving up a fresh twist on the horror mockumentary scene. Directed by Sean Nichols Lynch, this found footage film cleverly marries the allure of ancient Egyptian rituals with the chilling uncertainty of cult dynamics, all captured through a ‘documentary’ lens.

The ending of The Mummy (2017) sets up a shared universe team-up that never happened due to the film's box office flop and critical lashing. Nick stabbing himself with the Dagger of Set doesn't accomplish Ahmanet's plan because he resists and gains control of his own body and powers. Nick's transformation leaves him unsure of what he has become, with powers similar to Ahmanet but still uncertain about his alignment and future choices.
The ending of The Mummy (2017) gives Tom Cruise's Nick Morton the power of the Egyptian god of death, Set, setting up a shared universe team-up that never happened. While The Mummy (2017) was meant to kickstart Universal's Dark Universe before an McU-style crossover between universal monsters like The Invisible Man (to be played by Johnny Depp) and Frankenstein’s Monster (played by Javier Bardem), the box office flop and critical lashing of The Mummy ended those plans almost before they started.

Sometimes, the best weapons an anime hero can have aren’t the most powerful: they’re the ones who can talk back. Sentient weapon partners take many different forms. From objects that can speak or even form a spiritual bond with their human, to humans that can transform to be wielded by a partner, theirs is a rare and powerful friendship to earn.
Whatever form they take, their endearing (or terrifying) qualities remain consistent. Usually, they come to resonate very closely with the person wielding them, and provide advice, support, and even sometimes teasing in battle. Some weapons only want to take their wielders over, such as Anubis in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, but these partners prefer to grow stronger alongside their wielders.

The Mummy's most important villain is obviously the resurrected Imhotep. He terrorizes O'Connell and Evelyn throughout their journey to Hamunaptra and is one of the most menacing movie monsters in history as he embarks on his quest to regain his full human strength. However, though he's the central antagonist, he's certainly not the most frightening.
The honor instead goes to the scarabs. Introduced in the first scene of the movie, the scarabs are flesh-eating beetles used to torment those cursed with the Hom-Dai, the most potent of ancient Egyptian curses. Warden Hassan, one of the members of O'Connell's party, accidentally wakes one when he's searching for an artifact, and it startlingly kills him. From that point forward, the little bugs haunted the heroes' every step, proving to be a massive threat.

Goku is easily one of the most powerful anime characters in existence, and he only grows stronger with time. “With the Strength of Ra!” For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit “Mummies Alive!“, an animated series for kids that aired in syndication back in 1997.
It’s hard to put a finger on why “Mummies Alive!” never really clicked with audiences. Sure, now it’s considered a cult classic and is mostly adored by horror geeks and nostalgia buffs, but back in 1997 “Mummies Alive!” arrived with a roar, and landed with a splat. I blame the lack of success on bad timing. I peg it mainly on the arrival of the 4Kids brand, as by the middle of 1997, 4Kids Anime had made its explosive debut in America with “Pokemon.” Once 4Kids introduced networks to licensed content that brought in big ratings, suddenly the conventional Saturday morning cartoon was dead.

The dog isn't called "man's best friend" for nothing—canines and humans have been living together for some 30 000 years. Unsurprisingly, dogs feature in most ancient myths and religions, usually in a positive light, but sometimes as monsters, like Cerberus or Anubis, the jackal-headed god of the underworld. This also extends to horror movies, where dogs have appeared as threats since at least 1914 with the original German The Hound of the Baskervilles film.

“Black Adam” is here and, at least according to actor Dwayne Johnson, he’s ready to upend the hierarchy of the DC Universe.
A spin-off of sorts from DC’s earlier “Shazam!”, “Black Adam” follows Johnson’s Teth-Adam, a demigod that had been imprisoned for 5,000 years and has now been unleashed in the turbulent, fictionalized North African nation of Kahndaq (instead of Egypt).
Kahndaq is a nation overruled by a mass of warlords known as “intergang,” meaning that Teth-Adam has a lot of cleaning up to do. (And this is before one of the intergang warlords zeroes in on a mystical crown that can turn him into the literal devil.) Teth-Adam learns to be a little more human thanks to his interactions with some local freedom fighters and comes to an understanding with the Justice Society (led by Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman), standing in for the larger DC Universe.

Dwayne Johnson has been very busy promoting his pair of DC superhero blockbusters “DC League of Super-Pets” and “Black Adam,” so it was probably inevitable that the two films would cross paths. And The Rock shared that special moment with his fans on social media.
On Sunday, Johnson released the post-credits scene from “DC League of Super-Pets” on social media (which you can watch below), in which Superman and Krypto meet Black Adam and his own super-pet, Anubis. And yes, Johnson voices Krypto, Black Adam, and Anubis in this scene, with the jackal explaining that his owner is an antihero.
“It’s basically like a hero, except way cooler,” Anubis says. “You make your own rules and then you break ‘em. Also, you can ignore most moral and ethical conventions because no one can stop you.”
“That sounds like a villain,” deadpans Krypto.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is done with teasing. He jumped into the social media universe Saturday with a full post-credit scene from the animated DC’s League of Super-Pets.
The social media-posted scene features Johnson as multiple characters – he provides the voice of Superman’s dog, Krypto, but also voices Black Adam and Black Adam’s dog, Anubis.
Johnson copped to the multiple roles in his caption.
“The world is starting to simmer with excitement about the earths shattering Superman vs Black Adam⚡️showdown one day,” Johnson wrote.”But until then… Black Adam’S Dog ~ Anubis⚡️ has a few choice words for Superman’S Dog ~ Krypto. The definition and philosophy of Antihero is quite intriguing….And Yes…. If you listen closely, I voice Both Dogs And Black Adam in this scene.”
The post already has more than a half-million likes.

Universal might have tried their hardest to make the Dark Universe a thing, but audiences simply weren’t interested in the idea of the studio’s stable of classic monsters headlining action-packed blockbusters. The plans were certainly ambitious, but also hugely flawed, with the likes of Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, Javier Bardem, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie all lined up before the would-be franchise imploded at the first hurdle.
Cruise might be one of the biggest movie stars in history, but even he couldn’t save The Mummy from disaster. Not only was it terrible, but fans weren’t able to look past the idea of any big budget effort focusing on the Egyptian undead that didn’t feature Brendan Fraser. Indeed, viewers of a certain generation hold Fraser’s Mummy trilogy very close to their hearts, with the actor’s dashing and charismatic Rick O’Connell shooting him to stardom...

A spin-off from 2001′s Mummy sequel, the Scorpion King series – begun in 2002 – has official now out-lived and outlasted the very franchise it was born from. Stephen Sommers Mummy films ran for 9 years and three films, whilst the Scorpion King franchise is now in it’s fifth film with Scorpion King: Book of Souls and has go on for 16 years – with four sequels in the the last ten years alone.
This latest comes once again from Universal 1440, the direct to market arm of Universal which has consistently put out direct to DVD sequels to a myriad of different franchises like Death Race, Bring It On, Jarhead, Tremors and more. This film also sees Universal 1440 stalwart Don Michael Paul in the directors chair,...

Be patient, American Gods Season 2 is arriving sometime soon, with some fresh faces behind the scenes and in front of the camera.
American Gods Season 2 has begun production! Sadly, showrunners Fuller and Green won't be back for American Gods Season 2. Gillian Anderson has also bowed out as Media, with Kristen Chenoweth (Easter) also considering not returning without Fuller and Green.
Instead, Jesse Alexander will share showrunning duties with American Gods creator, Neil Gaiman. Alexander may be familiar to Bryan Fuller fans, having worked on both Hannibal and Star Trek: Discovery.
As if that wasn't enough, the ongoing showrunner scrambles has claimed a casualty in Fuller and Green's replacement, Jesse Alexander, leading to further delays.
This is good news both for fans of the book and fans of good TV. The first season of American Gods only made it through about a third of the book, which means...

To celebrate the October 16th release of the horror anthology Tales of Halloween, Daily Dead spoke to the filmmakers behind the movie to discuss the project, their individual contributions and more.
First up is Axelle Carolyn, the writer and director of 2013’s Soulmate, who first spearheaded the anthology and whose creepy, atmospheric segment “Grimm Grinning Ghost” stars Alex Essoe (Starry Eyes) as a young woman confronted by an urban legend in which she does not believe.
As one of the masterminds behind Tales of Halloween, can you give some background on how the project came together?
Axelle Carolyn: I’ve been friends with these guys for the best part of ten years, and had been thinking for a while that it'd be great to work on something together. There's an awesome horror community in L.A., and we all hang together to talk horror, watch horror, eat, breathe and live horror.
