In modern horror, a common trend sees filmmakers incorporating a 70s style amidst difficult thematic material. Everyone Will Burn (Y todos arderán), directed by David Hebrero, is an example of this, but the film relies too much on picturesque cinematography and its own unique style. While these aspects can help a film achieve greatness, they are not enough to keep an audience engaged for over 2 hours. Everyone Will Burn is a supernatural epic horror film that starts with an intriguing premise but grows more convoluted as it goes on. The film begins as an old-school horror flick but devolves into a fantasy spectacle, featuring a climax reminiscent of an Avengers film but without rhyme or reason. Everyone Will Burn is a fairly memorable high-concept horror film, but the confusing script could have used some significant tightening.

Last Friday, the apocalyptic supernatural Spanish horror film Everyone Will Burn was given a theatrical release in select locations by Drafthouse Films. Now the film has made its way to VOD (it’s available on iTunes at This Link), and to help you decide whether or not this is one you’d like to check out, we have the trailer embedded above.
David Hebrero, who has racked up many credits as a cinematographer and a gaffer, directed Everyone Will Burn from a screenplay he wrote with Javier Kiran. The story centers on María José, an outlier in her small Spanish town, who is grieving after her young son’s suicide. As she teeters on the brink of suicide herself, she encounters a mysterious young girl caked in dirt. It is quickly revealed that the girl has telekinetic powers and might be the harbinger of the apocalyptic prophecy that exists within town legend.

It’s Face/Off meets Freaky Friday when a homicide detective swaps bodies with a serial killer in Devils, the critically acclaimed body-swap psychological thriller that’s now on VOD and streaming on Screambox. The thriller, written and directed by Kim Jae-hoon, blurs revenge and morality where an unwavering detective takes on a serial killer.
“Devils follows the story of Jae-hwan, a determined homicide detective assigned to take down a ring of serial killers terrorizing the city. The case becomes deeply personal for him as one of the victims is his own brother-in-law.

The familiar proverb “the road to hell is paved with good intentions” comes to mind in director David Hebrero‘s Everyone Will Burn, a stunning technicolor horror fable set in contemporary Spain. A small town’s attempts to thwart an apocalyptic prophecy instead unwittingly fester over forty years before the film’s events, creating seismic repercussions in the present.
Hebrero, who co-wrote with Javier Kiran, is less interested in the prophecy itself and more in how the concept of evil turns the town inside out. In Hebrero and lead actor Macarena Gómez’s capable hands, Everyone Will Burn offers a devilishly compelling depiction of religious mania run amok.
After the opening text explains the town prophecy, Everyone Will Burn introduces María José right as she’s preparing to step off a ledge and end her pain. She’s stopped by the sudden arrival of a strange girl, Lucía (newcomer Sofía García), caked in muck.

One of the most difficult day to day questions facing Christian theologians is this: how does anybody go to Heaven when somebody they love is in Hell? How is existing in a state of bliss possible, or even desirable, in such a context? Wouldn’t most parents prefer yto be where their children are, no matter the personal cost? This question lies at the heart of David Hebrero’s complex and not altogether successful fable, which sees the mother of a youth who died by suicide abruptly confronting the nature of her feelings for him and her desire for revenge.
Suicide, to the Catholic inhabitants of small Spanish villages like the one where this is set, is a mortal sin. Maria José (Macarena Gómez) sees this as all the more unjust because her boy was hounded to his death, relentlessly bullied for being a little person. She too is held in contempt by.

I've never understood why small towns are so often praised as better places to raise children. Contrary to the popular belief that they are kinder and more welcoming, smaller places tend to be more isolated, and therefore more prejudiced, more close-minded, more stuck in superstitions, more apt to violence against anything they understand. Small towns like this are perfect places for dark legends to grow, hatred to fester, and rage to simmer until it explodes. David Hebrero's sophomore feature Everyone will Burn focuses on just such a town in the Spanish countryside. Where townsfolk believe that anything 'odd' doesn't belong - which too often translate into anyone who looks different or acts in a way that the town arbitrarily decides is wrong. And while a visually stunning...

Drafthouse Films has acquired three films that it will release theatrically in U.S. theaters followed by digital releases across major streaming platforms.
They include “Mister Organ,” a documentary from journalist and filmmaker David Farrier, whose 2016 film “Tickled” explored the dark underbelly of “competitive endurance tickling,” will be released in theaters this fall. As he turns his camera on another stranger than fiction story, Farrier finds himself caught in an increasingly dangerous game of cat and mouse with a mysterious character who expertly manipulates the lives of anyone who dares to expose his secrets. The film, Produced by Ant Timpson and Firefly Films’ Emma Slade and Alex Reed, was a critical and audience favorite at Fantastic Fest 2022, and has become a box office hit in Farrier’s native New Zealand.

Fantastic Fest 2022 has a great selection of film docs, and one of the most interesting ones is the latest from Alexandre O. Philippe. His resume includes some fascinating examinations of classic films, including 78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene and Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on the Exorcist. His films always focus on an interesting corner of film and when I heard that he had a new one examining the work of David Lynch, I knew I couldn’t miss it.
This film takes on a bit of a different format from his previous works. It is divided into six chapters and essentially takes on the format of a series of video essays diving into various aspects of Lynch's oeuvre. The common theme is how those works relate or overlap to the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz.
With participation from Amy Nicholson, Rodney Ascher, Aaron Moorehead, Justin Benson, Karyn Kusama,...

Everyone Will Burn (Y todos arderán) begins with a text crawl that informs us that in 1980 the residents of Razas del Monte sacrificed a baby in the hopes it would prevent the apocalypse they believed was imminent. They’ve managed to keep it covered up, until now.
That’s replaced by a view of the countryside accompanied by the sound of tortured breathing. We see the immaculately dressed María José climb up to the edge of a bridge, ready to kill herself. As she does Lucia (Sofía García) a strange-looking little girl, dirty and dishevelled, walks up behind her and asks “Mama”? Since her suicide attempt is linked to the death of her son and those responsible, including the mayor’s son, managing to escape being prosecuted this has a strong effect on her.

Principal photography is just about to wrap on this independent film toplined by Macarena Gómez, Rodolfo Sancho, Rubén Ochandiano and Ana Milán. “A spiritual successor to Rosemary’s Baby” is how David Hebrero describes his second feature following Dulcinea, a horror-drama entitled Y todos arderán (lit. “And They’ll All Burn”). In addition, the filmmaker asserts that it will emit whiffs of the Italian giallo and Spanish fantaterror genres, as well as absorbing and exuding unashamedly obvious influences from the juggernauts of contemporary fantastical film, such as Álex de la Iglesia, Ari Aster and Robert Eggers (The Witch). As a result, expectations are sky-high. And it’s surely for this very reason that the cast, comprising Macarena Gómez, Rodolfo Sancho (whom we...
