One of A24’s most disturbing and genuinely scary horror films leaves Netflix next week
Image
We knew the day was coming, but we didn't expect it to arrive so quickly. One of the only two A24 horror films currently streaming on Netflix will be leaving the platform very soon. How soon? We're talking next week. After being added in January 2025, it's already time to say goodbye to this horror masterpiece that had everyone talking back when it first hit theaters in 2018. It's the psychological horror Hereditary, and it's set to depart Netflix on Tuesday, April 15.

Since this film isn't a Netflix original but rather a licensed title, we always knew it would eventually be removed. However, we expected it to stay on the platform for at least six months before leaving. It turns out Netflix only secured the streaming rights for a three-month period. With the removal date fast approaching, it's crucial to watch it before it's gone. There’s no guarantee it will return,...

Richard Linklater’s ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ Adaptation Rounds Out Core Cast With ‘Suffs’ Star Hannah Cruz
Image
Now you know, when Richard Linklater’s “Merrily We Roll Along” film adaptation premieres in about 15 years, it will star Broadway actress Hannah Cruz.

The “Suffs” star has joined the project as Gussie opposite Paul Mescal, Beanie Feldstein, Mallory Bechtel and Ben Platt, TheWrap has learned. Filming will take place over the next two decades, similar to the director’s process for his Oscar-winning movie, “Boyhood.”

Producers include Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum, Ginger Sledge, Jonathan Marc Sherman, Mike Blizzard and Linklater. Some filming had already taken place as of late 2024, years after Blumhouse first acquired the rights in 2019.

The movie is an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s 1981 musical of the same name. The 2023 Broadway revival notably starred Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe.

Cruz was most recently seen in the Tony-winning “Suffs” and is currently attached to the “Big Fish” industry reading led by Patrick Wilson.

Hannah Cruz Joins Richard Linklater’s ‘Merrily We Roll Along’
Image
Exclusive: Hannah Cruz (The Time Traveler’s Wife) has closed a deal to join Merrily We Roll Along, Richard Linklater’s adaptation of the 1981 musical from Stephen Sondheim and George Furth.

A Clarence Derwent Award-winning veteran of the theater world, Cruz is set to play Gussie, the wife of Paul Mescal’s Franklin Shepard, who after establishing himself as a talented composer of Broadway musicals, abandons his friends and songwriting career to become a producer of Hollywood movies. The story takes place over 20 years, and Linklater will shoot the film over the same time span, taking a page from his playbook on the Oscar-nominated Boyhood, which was shot over 12 years.

As previously announced, Ben Platt, Beanie Feldstein and Mallory Bechtel will also star. Producers of the feature are Ginger Sledge, Jason Blum for Blumhouse Productions, Jonathan Marc Sherman, Linklater and Mike Blizzard.

With a book by Furth and music and lyrics by Sondheim,...

A24's Disturbing 7-Year-Old Psychological Horror Movie Is a Frighteningly Big Netflix Hit
Image
A24's hit psychological horror film Hereditary has been enjoying new success on Netflix. The film is No. 8 on Netflix's Top 10 movies in the U.S.

FlixPatrol reports that Hereditary has been in the Top 10 since Jan. 16, when it was #6, before dropping to #8 yesterday and holding that position today. The film, released in 2018, stars Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd and Gabriel Byrne as it explores the supernatural and psychological torment that follows a grieving family. Hereditary was written and directed by Ari Aster in his feature directorial debut and was critically acclaimed, with a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Hereditary was added to Netflix earlier this month.

'Hereditary' Is Coming to Netflix, and I Still Can’t Get Over This Scene

Quick Links What Is 'Hereditary' About? How Charlie's Death Continues to Haunt Viewers Toni Collete's Performance Leads to Other Horrifying Moments in 'Hereditary'

New to Netflix on January 15, 2025, Ari Aster's Hereditary is arguably one of, if not the scariest feature film debut ever recorded. The slow-burning psychological thriller begins as a compelling domestic drama before showing its devious hand as a demonic possession movie steeped in religious ritual. Apart from Toni Collette's award-worthy performance, the taboo-shattering horror movie is rife with heartstopping and pulse-pounding moments that are impossible to shake off.

With a new audience set to experience Hereditary for the first time on Netflix, it's worth echoing the abject terror instilled in those who saw the film upon release in 2018. To be blunt, Hereditary is not for the faint of heart of causal horror fans. The film is made for hardcore horror connoisseurs who require difficult viewing...

A24’s Modern Horror Masterpiece 'Hereditary' Lands on Netflix Just in Time for the Post-Holiday Blues
Image
Ari Aster’s modern horror breakthrough, Hereditary, will land on your favorite streaming platform very soon. According to What's on Netflix, the film will be added to Netflix’s library in January, a month that notoriously offers very little in the way of quality horror content.

Starting January 1, you can stream Aster’s original take on the demonic/possession subgenres starring Toni Collette. Back in 2018, Hereditary was the most common topic of the “horror doesn’t win awards” discourse, and Collette’s riveting performance was the shining example to point to. Compared to the notable genre titles that were nominated and/or won in major award ceremonies, Hereditary truly stands beside them.

1 of A24's Absolute Scariest Movies Is Coming to Netflix Next Month
Image
2018's Hereditary ranked as one of the decade's scariest horror films; like The Babadook, it explored layered themes of grief and mental health. Director Ari Aster also staked his claim in the genre with his massively successful debut film.

Hereditary joins Netflix's streaming library this January. Grossing $87.8 million against its $10 million budget, director Ari Aster's first feature-length film is also one of A24's biggest hits; Hereditary currently ranks fourth in the studio's most successful releases. The film is psychological horror told in the same vein as The Lighthouse and The Babadook, both blurring the line between insanity and the supernatural. Hereditary is considered a modern horror classic with the cult appeal of Carrie, Rosemary's Baby, and The Exorcist. Aster says that at its core, his film is really a family drama with a horrific end.

10 Twisted Horror Movies You Need To Watch More Than Once
Image
Although they may not be for everyone, there are countless reasons to love horror movies, and some particularly twisted horror movies deserve more than one watch. The entire genre is dedicated to thrilling their audiences by giving them the frights they crave. Whether they use strange creatures from other worlds, unsettling methods of dark psychological horror, or something in between, tons of horror movies have consistently scared their viewers over the years. Unfortunately, there is one major downside to many films that fall within this unique genre.

Because horror movies often rely on suspense and the element of surprise, many of them are sadly not as effective the second time around. Even some of the best horror movies lose their punch when the audience knows what is coming. However, there are a handful of outstanding films that actually get even better upon a rewatch. These horror movies not only feature shocking twists,...

10 Scariest Supernatural Horror Movies
Image
Supernatural horror movies have been around since the invention of the film reel. In the first couple of decades of the 18th century, adaptations of supernatural horror fiction novels flooded the market and the genre found its golden age and officially became a permanent fixture for cinema. The fear of the unknown is one of humanity's most primal instincts, and the best horror movies exploit that in the form of jumpscares and fearful lore. While technological advancements have improved the texture of horror movies to feel more realistic and thus more terrifying, perhaps the most exciting change over the years has been the reclamation of monsters.

Ghost stories remain the most common sources of inspiration, as directors and screenwriters unearth more and more obscure folklore and myths, but supernatural horror movies are not always about ghosts. While spirits and apparitions provide the simplest premise for supernatural horror, distortion of nature...

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School Ruined A Franchise Legacy Character With 1 Scene
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for the Pretty Little Liars: Summer School finale.

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School changed a legacy character's personality, tarnishing their original identity within the franchise. Dr. Sullivan's motivations didn't make sense, leading to inconsistent writing that negatively impacted her character arc. Returning legacy characters in a spinoff like Summer School may not always land well, affecting the overall series.

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School re-introduced a franchise legacy character, but in doing so, the spinoff tarnished the individual forever. Summer School is the sequel to Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin and focused on a group of teenagers tormented by a new villain named Bloody Rose. While it was a solid next chapter after Original Sin's ending, bringing back a beloved character from the original series only to change their entire personality was a creative choice that didn't benefit the show in the long run.

“Pretty Little Liars” brought out the Final Girl Energy for Thursday’s “Summer School” finale, finally unmasking Bloody Rose while introducing plenty of options for a potential Season 3.

How ‘Pretty Little Liars: Summer School’ Explored Religious Fanaticism
Image
In 2022, Max resurrected the long running teen favorite “Pretty Little Liars” from the brains behind “Riverdale” and “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring as “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin.” Based on the books by Sara Shepard, the original followed four teenage girls in Rosewood, Pennsylvania who begin getting threatening messages years after their friend Alison disappears signed only with the initial “A.” Running for seven seasons beginning in 2010, “Pretty Little Liars” became a pop culture hit.

“Original Sin” is the the fourth series in the franchise and still set in that world, but this time around follows five friends in Millwood, Pennsylvania who are being stalked by “A” because of their mother’s involvement in the death of a classmate, Angela Waters, in 1999. While this serves as the main storyline, the friends also deal with serious issues like rape and suicide, as well as typical high school drama.

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School Soundtrack Guide - Every Song & When They Play
Image
Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episodes 1 through 8.

"Pretty Little Liars: Summer School" offers a bright summer slasher vibe with familiar characters and a new villain. Returning characters face new challenges as they navigate summer school and encounter the mysterious "Bloody Rose." The Max show's soundtrack includes popular songs like "School's Out" by Alice Cooper and "Cruel Summer" by Bananarama.

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School is a stark contrast to Original Sin, with brighter tones, sunny vibes, and, of course, several pop hits that are perfect for summer break. The slasher and horror elements are still present (proven by the haunting instrumental additions to the show's score) as the five teenagers recover from their experience with "A," aka Archie Waters, and try to move on. However, a new villain named "Bloody Rose" throws a wrench into the characters' plans in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.

10 Best Pretty Little Liars: Summer School Characters, Ranked
Image
Max's Pretty Little Liars reboot, Original Sin, and its follow-up, Summer School, is one of the few examples of a good teen drama revival. The story follows a group of girls in the blue-collar town of Millwood who are stalked by a masked serial killer known as 'A.' Unlike in the original series, Original Sin sees the mysterious killer punishing the liars for the sins of their mothers.

The two-season series, currently airing its second season, follows a wide variety of characters, from the liars themselves to their significant others and, of course, the creepier residents of their small town. From this large cast of characters, some stand out as especially compelling and beloved by fans of the series.

Why I Think This Character Is Bloody Rose In Pretty Little Liars: Summer School
Image
Mrs. Langsberry is my pick to be Bloody Rose, given she has a motive for wanting the girls dead. Mrs. Beasley is likely a red herring as she would be too obvious and was accounted for during Bloody Rose's attack on Kelly. Wes, Christian, and Jen may be Bloody Rose's accomplices, assisting Mrs. Langsberry.

Only one episode remains in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School, and the finale will surely (and finally) uncover Bloody Rose's identity, either confirming or disproving my theory regarding who has been terrorizing the Liars and Millwood all season long. The Max slasher teen drama television series, created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, follows a group of five teenage girls who were brought together in the first season (Original Sin) to pay for their respective mothers' sins. Now, another villain is seemingly holding a grudge against Imogen, Tabby, Faran, Mouse, and Noa in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin Characters & Their Og Series Counterparts

Comparison between new characters in Original Sin and old favorites show similarities in personalities and motivations.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin dropped on Max in 2022, rebooting the series with a new mystery. Sorry, But I'm Not Convinced That Character Is Bloody Rose In Pretty Little Liars: Summer School
Image
Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episode 6.

Imogen believes Bloody Rose is her mom, but the lack of a face reveal suggests the teenager might have been hallucinating. The discovery that Davie Adams is the Pretty Little Liars: Summer School villain is likely a fakeout, with Bloody Rose's actual identity being revealed in the next two episodes. The real villain may be connected to Our Mother of Holy Grace, with Martha Beasley as a top suspect.

Bloody Rose puts Imogen through one of her brutal tests in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episode 6, which ends with the villain's identity seemingly being revealed. But I believe the show may be trying to trick the audience and the person behind the bloody gauze isn't who Bailee Madison's character thinks it is. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin previously referenced Riverdale, establishing a connection in season 1. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa created Riverdale and Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.

The world of Pretty Little Liars: Summer School is constantly expanding, and episode 6 seemingly confirmed its connection to the CW teen drama television show Riverdale. Max's slasher mystery series, created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (who also developed Riverdale) and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, is a spinoff of the original Pretty Little Liars, meaning that it also takes place in the same universe as the popular Freeform show. However, Aguirre-Sacasa has made it his mission to connect his latest project to the one he is undoubtedly most known for.

Pretty Little Liars Just Repeated The Most Frustrating Part Of Its "A" Mystery, 10 Years Later
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Pretty Little Liars: Summer School, episode 5, "Chapter Sixteen: Friday The 13th."

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episode 5 copied a frustrating "A" mystery plot twist from the original Pretty Little Liars series ten years later. Dr. Sullivan echoed Ezra's book storyline from Pretty Little Liars, showcasing the issue of characters abusing power. The lack of proof regarding Dr. Sullivan writing a book leaves room for the possibility that she could be the villainous Bloody Rose Waters.

The Pretty Little Liars franchise just copied one of its most frustrating parts of the "A" mystery ten years later in the show Pretty Little Liars: Summer School. Based on the books by Sara Shepard, the original Pretty Little Liars series ran from 2010 to 2017, putting the Liars through torture and blackmail at the hands of "A." Because of the soapy nature of the show, Pretty Little Liars introduced...

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School Episode 4 Recap: 8 Biggest Reveals
Image
Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episode 4, "When a Stranger Calls Back."

Bloody Rose tested Faran's strength in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episode 4, trying to kill her even after she passed the test. The girls found the real Rose Waters, who promptly jumped off a bridge, and through Rose's files, Imogen discovered Dr. Sullivan was the woman's doctor. Kelly rebelled after catching her mother's hypocrisy, leading to mysterious consequences for her in the Beasley household.

Not counting Imogen's Bloody Rose sighting at the bus stop, Mouse had the first real encounter with the season's villain in episode 3, but Bloody Rose wasn't done with the girls, as seen in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episode 4. The Max slasher teen drama, created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, introduced Bloody Rose in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episode 1, and she is arguably...

Pretty Little Liars' Spinoff Continues To Be One Of The Best Horror Shows On TV
Image
Pretty Little Liars: Summer School offers bone-chilling horror and suspense. The Max series has terrifying villains inspired by classic horror films. Pretty Little Liars: Summer School couldn't be more different than the original Pretty Little Liars.

Higher quality horror shows are hard to come by, but Pretty Little Liars: Summer School is undoubtedly one of the better ones as it continuously builds upon its scare factor, suspense, and intriguing (and terrifying) villains. The Max slasher teen drama is a spinoff of the popular Freeform series and is set in the same universe (but one doesn't have to watch the original Pretty Little Liars to tune in to the spinoff). Whereas it contains the very basic foundations of its predecessor, like a mysterious antagonist named "A" stalking a group of teenage girls, it couldn't be more different.

The first season, subtitled Original Sin, promptly let viewers know that the newer series is bolder,...

Summer school begins early this year.

No, you won’t be challenged with tests or catching and marking grasshoppers, but you will feel forced to sit through class nonetheless when the next generation of Pretty Little Liars returns with their own type of Summer School.

This season discusses the classic movie trope with which Pretty Little Liars has become synonymous — the final girl.

TV Fanatic had the opportunity to get in front of the cast and creators for a little Q&a, and they did the best they could to entertain and tease without spoiling too much — just as we like it.

We first spoke to the group that not only has answers but who makes the decisions. Creators Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring were joined by Pll mom Sharon Leal.

Roberto told us how he believes Rose Waters stacks up against her son, who was terrorizing the girls...

For the teenagers who want to spend their summer relaxing and having fun, it’s the worst news ever.

Original star Annabeth Gish is returning as Dr. Anne Sullivan, the therapist who helped the original crop of liars through the trauma they endured being stalked by A.

Richard Linklater’s ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ Adds Mallory Bechtel To Cast
Image
Exclusive: Mallory Bechtel (Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin) has landed a role opposite Paul Mescal, Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein in Richard Linklater’s feature adaptation of Merrily We Roll Along, the classic musical from Stephen Sondheim and George Furth.

Details as to her role haven’t been disclosed.

Merrily follows Franklin Shepard, who after establishing himself as a talented composer of Broadway musicals, abandons his friends and songwriting career to become a producer of Hollywood movies. The story takes place over 20 years, and Linklater will shoot the film over the same time span, taking a page from his playbook on the Oscar-nominated Boyhood, shot over 12 years.

With a book by Furth and music and lyrics by Sondheim, the musical is based on the 1934 play of the same name by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. It ran for 44 previews and 16 performances on Broadway in 1981 and recently returned to The Great White Way,...

Pretty Little Liars Summer School Adds Original Series Star, and We Have the First Look
Production on Pretty Little Liars: Summer School is officially underway, and there will be a major throwback to the original series.

HBO Max confirmed Friday that Annabeth Gish would be returning as Dr. Sullivan for the second chapter of the reboot series.

If you watch Pretty Little Liars online, you know fans had theories about the doctor on multiple occasions throughout the original Freeform series.

Thankfully, Dr. Sullivan was just doing her job and attempted to help the liars process their trauma.

Given that Gish is playing the same character here, it should be more of the same.

On Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin Season 1, we were introduced to six new liars who were caught up in a deadly game with A.

Bailee Madison played Imogen Adams, Chandler Kinney as Tabby Haworthe, Zaria as Faran Bryant, Malia Pyles as Minnie "Mouse" Honrada, Maia Reficco as Noa Olivar, and Mallory Bechtel as Kelly Beasley.

‘Pretty Little Liars: Summer School’: Dr. Sullivan Is Back For Season 2 Of Max Reboot
Image
A familiar face is returning for Season 2 of Max’s Pretty Little Liars reboot. Original Pll cast member Annabeth Gish will reprise her role as Dr. Sullivan in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.

Gish recurred as the character in the original Pretty Little Liars series, which aired for six seasons on Freeform.

Created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, the new series debuted five years after the original Pretty Little Liars series ended, focusing on new characters in the new fictional town of Millwood, Pa and with multiple references to iconic horror movies (think Carrie and the original Halloween).

Season 1 picked up 20 years after a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Now, in present day, a disparate group of teen girls — a brand-new set of Little Liars — find themselves tormented by an unknown Assailant and made to pay for the secret sin committed...
