Netflix’s Polish thriller, Just One Look, adapted from best-selling author Harlan Coben’s novel of the same name, is the latest addition to the long list of narratives that deal with an amnesiac protagonist trying to leave their dark past behind, only to get their present lives upturned by it. If you regularly follow these original regional thrillers released by the streaming service every week, you are already familiar with the narrative pattern. The cover-ups, quests for vengeance, retributions, and secrets—every expected twist and turn ultimately boils down to one single truth: that the past always catches up to you. The problem is, the narrative tries to shock you with the final twist after meandering through uninspiring story threads right from the beginning and expects you to be in awe at what turns out to be the most obvious, underwhelming revelation in line with what the narrative was feeding you.

[Note: With the film set for its digital debut tomorrow, here’s a reposting of our review of Midnight Peepshow from its festival run back in 2022]
British horror cinema has a long-standing tradition of producing some of the best anthologies of all time, in particular in the era of Hammer, Tigon et al. So when a new anthology comes along it can be hard to separate it from history and tradition. But with Midnight Peepshow, filmmakers Andy Edwards, Airell Anthony Hayles, Ludovica Musumeci and Jake West actually tap into British cinematic history, setting their film in the formerly sleazy streets of London’s Soho – a place where, once upon a time, sex and cinema were often intertwined.

This film seems unable to decide whether it is a hallucinatory exploration of queer culture or a naturalistic rite-of-passage drama
With her low-budget feature debut, British director Lois Stevenson gives us a tonally unsteady film: it’s unsure whether to be a sturdy naturalistic coming-out drama about a twentysomething man forging his Lgbtq identity, or a weirded-out Kenneth Anger-style dive into queer subculture.
Screenwriters Jamie Bacon and Charles Streeter double up duties to act the lead roles. In creaky office scenes, Bacon plays mousy Daniel, an entry level City worker uncomfortable with the advances of his boss, who’s eyeing him up as his wingman in hard drinking and everyday sexism. Daniel is also avoiding calls from his dad, who leaves apologetic, bridge-building messages. What emerges in flashbacks is a terrible childhood memory: his father exploding with rage at Daniel dressing up in girl’s clothes. For years, Daniel...
