Sunrise Films and Vertigo Releasing will bring Samuel Clemens’ debut feature The Drowned to digital platforms this autumn, unleashing a seaside terror rooted in Greek mythology. The film follows three art thieves who, having stolen a priceless painting, retreat to a remote coastal safe house only to discover their fourth accomplice is nowhere to be found. As suspicions mount that one of them may be responsible, an unseen presence stirs beneath the waves, turning their refuge into a prison of dread.

The Drowned premiered at London’s FrightFest Halloween earlier this year under its original title The Waterhouse. Sunrise Films & Vertigo Releasing have unveiled an official trailer for The Drowned, an indie UK horror film marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Samuel Clemens. The film, formerly known as The Waterhouse, first premiered in London at FrightFest Halloween in 2023 and will be out on VOD starting in October this fall (in the US & UK). After pulling off a major art heist, three men arrive at a secluded coastal safe house to discover their fourth accomplice is missing. Was one of them responsible... or is there a malevolent ancient myth lurking at the water's edge? Woven with references to Greek mythology, they must now figure out if the blame lies with a more sinister presence lurking in the deep water... Sunrise Films and Vertigo Releasing have announced their upcoming multi-territory release of writer/director Samuel Clemens’ The Drowned, and we can exclusively unveil key art for the creature thriller.

The Greek mythology horror movie, formerly known as The Waterhouse, premiered in London at FrightFest Halloween and will release via Sunrise Films on major digital platforms in North America on October 7.

The Drowned follows “three thieves who have just stolen a priceless painting and arrive at a secluded safe house by the sea, only to discover their fourth accomplice is missing. They must question whether one of them was responsible for her disappearance, or if the blame lies with a more sinister presence lurking in the deep water below.”

Clemens, who is the great, great great nephew of Mark Twain, makes his feature debut.

There are plenty of reasons that murder mysteries are generally very popular. They can be made relatively cheaply, they can go straight to streaming/TV or on the big screen and a lot of people like watching them, whether it’s ‘background viewing’ or a more concentrated watch. Blackwater Lane ticks many of these boxes, both good and bad.
