Due to the series' formulaic nature, most Power Rangers episodes don't contain especially cathartic moments. Nice as it can be to see a character learn a lesson or use a new weapon or Zord to defeat a monster; these things are expected. Where the series shines is when it takes its time to build up to something big or when it catches its audience by complete surprise.

Power Rangers is frequently capable of making fans leap out of their seats with joy. Throughout the entire series, there have been moments that feel especially satisfying because of how big their impact is on either a narrative or meta-textual level. These moments include outstandingly executed victories over villains, meaningful changes in the relationships between characters, and the re-introduction of familiar faces to the show.

The Power Rangers franchise, based on the Japanese Super Sentai series, has run for 30 years, with a new cast of Rangers taking up the mantle almost every year. In the 30 seasons of Power Rangers, there are some Ranger colors that constantly appear, with Red Rangers, Blue Rangers, and Yellow Ranges in almost every Rangers team. However, there are some Ranger colors that break the standard.

Every few seasons, a new Ranger color debuts, such as the appearance of Boom in Power Rangers S.P.D., the first Orange Ranger to appear on-screen. In some cases, a Ranger color that is usually worn by women is given to men, or vice versa, such as Vesper from Power Rangers Hyperforce being the first and only female to wear a black Ranger suit in the franchise's history. It’s a stunning accomplishment that gets deeper, more complex, and more fascinating as it goes along. With spectacular work by Elisabeth Moss (“Mad Men”) and typically fantastic turns from Peter Mullan & Holly Hunter, this is a must-see.

There is something darkly meditative about Jane Campion's (Bright Star) work Top of the Lake, which was the first television series ever to be screened at Sundance, and definitely deserves the distinction.  The premise is reminiscent of works like The Killing or even Twin Peaks, where a special investigator begins unraveling a disturbing central mystery that is ripping a small, remote town apart.  In this case it's Mad Men's Elizabeth Moss as Robin, who is home in New Zealand visiting her cancer-stricken mother when a 12 year old girl, Tui (Jacqueline Joe), the daughter of a local drug lord, is found to be five months pregnant.  The father?  "No one," Tui writes down.  Soon she disappears completely, and what follows is a dark and twisted journey that uncovers the moral decay of what appears to be a pristine paradise.  For more on the series, hit the jump.
