Roger Ebert Hated John Travolta's 'Devil's Rain'
Image
Roger Ebert was unquestionably the most celebrated voice in film criticism, even though some films that found their way onto his "most hated" list have achieved acclaim as cult classics. The Devil's Rain, released in 1975 and featuring a cast that included Ernest Borgnine, William Shatner, and John Travolta in one of his earliest roles, was one of many that Ebert harbored disdain for. The Devil's Rain boasts a remarkable cast in front of the camera and also had a notable figure operating behind it, as Anton Lavey, founder of The Church of Satan, served as a technical advisor.

The Devil's Rain, while being bombastic and somewhat ham-fisted in its presentation, is almost prophetic regarding the events that would occur in the decade following its release. The era of Satanic panic and the ritual abuse conspiracy theories were a staple of talk shows and supermarket tabloids. All through Middle America, the...

Election 2024: All the Major News Networks’ Plans for Tuesday Night — and Beyond
Image
Election Day is here, and the major news networks are prepared for a long night — and potentially a long week.

With over 50 million people early voting in the 2024 Presidential Election, Tuesday night will offer plenty of results to thumb through even if an ultimate winner isn’t called until later in the week, and most of the news networks will kick off their election night coverage at 6 p.m. Et, with CNN even starting at 12 a.m. Et while NBC News begins at 5 p.m. Et.

MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki will return to the Big Board — and will even be livestreamed on Peacock and other social platforms — while Fox News will see Bill Hemmer steering the “Bill”-board.

Most networks have scheduled eight hours of election night programming from 6 p.m. Et to 2 a.m. Et, with a result for the presidential showdown between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump not expected immediately.

Donald Trump’s Republican National Convention Begins: What To Expect During The Week
Image
The Republican National Convention opened Monday afternoon, with a boosted security presence following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

That has given the proceedings a different tenor of coverage, with Trump expected to appear on the floor Monday night to a rousing reception of delegates and supporters.

Before the Trump rally shooting, correspondents already were looking to a convention that would be more than just a coronation of the Republican nominee, as he has yet to announce his vice presidential running mate. The former president has signaled that will come today.

Now, with the assassination attempt and concerns over the escalation of political violence, media focus will be on the speakers and the extent to which they display messages of unity versus red meat rhetoric.

“The reality is, this whole convention now is going to be really colored by what happened the other, and just the images of him pumping first and saying,...

CNN Trump Town Hall Backlash Grows After Verdict in E. Jean Carroll Case
Image
CNN is under fire for normalizing Donald Trump — an accusation that the network faced in 2016, when it gave him wall-to-wall coverage and multiple on-air appearances.

On May 9, the former “Apprentice” star was found liable for sexual abuse and battery in Manhattan civil court via the lawsuit brought by E. Jean Carroll. The verdict arrived a little over a month after Trump, who also served as President of the United States from 2017 to 2021, also was charged with 34 felony counts related to hush money payments made to an adult film star.

Much of the attention of media commentators on Twitter after the verdict was directed at CNN, which has undergone a sustained change since the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. Today, May 10, just a day after the ruling, the network will host a primetime Town Hall event with Trump hosted by Kaitlan Collins. He will be the first GOP challenger to President Joe Biden...

CNN’s Town Hall With Joe Biden Will Be A Drive-In Experience
Image
CNN’s town hall with Joe Biden on Thursday will be a drive-in experience.

The network said that the event will take place in the parking lot of Pnc Field in Moosic, where a stage has been set up and spots for thirty five cars, spaced out to follow social distancing guidelines.

The event is being held just outside Scranton, Pa, Biden’s hometown. About 100 people are expected to be in attendance.

“In these extraordinary times, we’re taking these extraordinary measures to try to bring the presidential campaign to the people, which has obviously been very difficult because campaigning is difficult, if not near impossible,” said Mark Preston, CNN’s vice president of political and special events programming and a senior political analyst.

The event, which starts at 8 Pm Et, will be Biden’s first town hall since accepting the Democratic nomination. President Donald Trump participated in an ABC News town hall on Tuesday,...

CNN Tests a ‘Drive-In’ Town Hall With Joe Biden
Image
CNN is planning a town-hall event with Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden tonight that is so complex and ornate viewers may mistake it for something entirely different.

“It’s going to be like ‘American Graffiti,” says Mark Preston, CNN’s vice president of political and special event programming, in an interview.

So-called “town halls” have grown in popularity among the nation’s TV-news outlets in recent years, part of a bid to inject the voices of average citizens into big news cycles. The advent of the coronavirus pandemic makes the logistics of such things more difficult. No candidate can really get too close to a questioner, after all, and who wants to sit in an enclosed space for a long period of time? CNN has struck upon an interesting alternative: When the AT&T-owned cable-news outlet begins broadcasting its event Thursday evening at 8 p.m. from Pnc Field in Moosic,...
