Dune: Prophecy's Biggest Burning Questions That Need to Be Answered in Season 2
Image
The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy, now streaming on Max. This article also contains a brief mention of suicide.

Dune: Prophecy Season 1 ended with a grueling battle for power in the cosmos inspired by Frank and Brian Herbert's novels. The Sisterhood has been fractured, while the Imperium lost casualties of its own. It's a stark reminder of how nasty politics can get.

The Season 1 finale sets the stage for an intriguing sophomore season. Many fans are eager to see how the various Houses will stabilize, especially House Corrino, which has been left in complete disarray. Still, despite wrapping up many of its major storylines, Dune: Prophecy left many plot threads hanging that will need to be addressed in the second season.

A Big Clue To Desmond Hart's True Identity Was Hidden In Dune: Prophecy's Very First Episode
Image
Includes Spoilers for Dune: Prophecy season 1.

Desmond Hart's true identity is revealed toward the end of Dune: Prophecy season 1, but the series' creators left clues from the beginning that were tell-tale signs of who he really was. Set 10,000 years before the Dune movies, HBO's prequel series examines an era of Frank Herbert's expansive sci-fi universe that's scarcely realized in the books, with several original characters being invented for the series. Among those original characters are Emperor Javicco Corrino, Tula Harkonnen, and, of course, Desmond Hart.

Travis Fimmel plays Desmond Hart in Dune: Prophecy's cast, delivering on a complex, enigmatic villain. He enters the series as a war veteran from Arrakis who's survived under strange circumstances. Throughout the season, audiences are introduced to more of his goals and background, including his parentage. Desmond Hart is the long-lost son of Tula Harkonnen and Orry Atreides, whom Tula sent away at birth...

6 Lingering Storylines Dune: Prophecy Season 2 Needs to Resolve Immediately
Image
Dune: Prophecy unfolds approximately 10,000 years before Paul Atreides’ rise to power. The series centers on the Harkonnen sisters, Valya and Tula, as they ascend to the leadership of the relatively new Bene Gesserit order, with Valya becoming the Mother Superior. Although these characters are created for the show, showrunner Alison Schapker skillfully bridges the ancient past with events familiar from the Dune novels and films.

The complex world of Dune presents challenges for any adaptation, and Dune: Prophecy tackles its time period with notable ambition. While diverging from the books in certain areas, the series incorporates gripping elements to captivate viewers. Its production quality is exceptional, and the morally complex characters evoke comparisons to Game of Thrones. The season finale wraps up some storylines, yet boldly leaves others unfinished, compelling fans to anticipate what Season 2 will bring. This list features the most burning (pun intended) questions.

What Went Wrong With Dune: Prophecy
Image
HBO's Dune: Prophecy has concluded its first season, and it's worth assessing why it fell short. Denis Villeneuve's adaptations of Frank Herbert's original novel have popularized the Dune title in modern pop culture, combining blockbuster entertainment with cinematic excellence for a pair of movies that have achieved award acclaim and box office success. With that, it's no surprise that Warner Bros. wanted to develop a high-budget spinoff TV series examining one of the universe's most appealing elements: the Bene Gesserit. The show was met with mediocre reviews, with a 70% on Rotten Tomatoes and an even lower 66% Audience Score.

The fact of the matter is Dune: Prophecy wasn't the hit that it could have been. It wasn't as popular as the Dune movies, and it wasn't as nearly as popular as Game of Thrones, the show HBO modeled it after. Whether it could be in the future is up in the air.

Quick Links Dune: Prophecy Showcases the Early Days of the Bene Gesserit Dune: Prophecy Isn't a Direct Adaptation of Sisterhood of Dune Dune: Prophecy Was Right to Go In Its Own Direction

Dune: Prophecy is the newest manifestation of the Denis Villeneuve Dune reboot continuity, with the show taking place generations upon generations before the birth of Paul Atreides. Much like the Villeneuve films, it's based on the Dune novel series, albeit different books than Dune and Dune: Part Two. Likewise, it also handles this source material much differently.

Dune: Prophecy is based on the novel Sisterhood of Dune, but it's far from a 1:1 adaptation. In fact, the stories and characters involved in these works rarely match up with each other. Dune: Prophecy boss teases the new plotlines on the way in season 2

The first season of Dune: Prophecy wrapped up last night with "The High-Handed Enemy," an eventful episode that left many of our characters in new and unexpected places. Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams) is now a prisoner of her son Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel) on the planet Salusa Secundus, and Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) has traveled with Princess Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) and swordmaster Kieran Atredies (Chris Mason) to the desert world of Arrakis to find out who's been manipulating Desmond from behind the scenes, and why.

Those are a lot of threads to leave dangling ahead. Happily, we now know the show will continue with a second season. Unhappily, it probably won't happen for a couple of years.

Emily Watson, Mark Strong, Olivia Williams, and Travis Fimmel in Dune: Prophecy (2024)
“Dune: Prophecy” on HBO is preparing for its second season after an exciting finale revealing shocking family secrets. It set the stage for a trip to Arrakis, the famous desert planet. The sci-fi show, set 10,000 years before the story of Paul Atreides, has been officially renewed, which means that fans will learn more about this beloved world.

There were some big surprises in the Season 1 finale. The bad guy Desmond Hart, played by Travis Fimmel, is Tula Harkonnen’s secret son, played by Olivia Williams. She has kept this secret from her sister Valya, who Emily Watson plays for many years. This complicated family relationship worsens the conflict, especially since Desmond’s brief reconciliation with Tula led to her arrest.

Watson stated, “Everything has changed,” as he thought about Valya’s broken outlook. She clarified that Valya still follows her sense of destiny, even though her views have been turned upside down.

Dune: Prophecy episode 6 | Baby, it’s cold outside

HBO’s saga of scheming space nuns and clueless royals rumbles to a close. Our review of Dune: Prophecy episode 6…

Nb: The following contains relatively minor spoilers for Dune: Prophecy episode 6. All the same, we’d advise you watch the finale first before reading the paragraphs below.

Together, dear readers, we’ve made it. Through the jarring edits, the meaningful looks, the scheming and the space weasels. Everything we’ve experienced in Dune: Prophecy so far has built to this – the grand finale. The moment where truths are revealed and scores are settled. Well, sort of.

In the land of television, final episodes are often supposed to leave us with something to chew over and questions to ask ourselves. But not quite like this. Maybe it’s just this writer, but there were at least two moments in episode six that prompted reactions along the lines of, ‘Eh?’ and ‘Wait,...

What happened to Emperor Javicco Corrino in the Dune: Prophecy finale? Is he [Spoiler]?
Image
The season 1 finale of Dune: Prophecy brought us lots of twists and turns. Tula Harkonnen is Desmond Hart's mother! Valya Harkonnen is now on Arrakis! The Bene Gesserit school is in utter disarray!

Naturally, there were also character deaths. Valya assigned the Bene Gesserit sister Francesca to kill Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong), the father of her son, but she didn't seem like she was going to go through with it. But she didn't need to: despairing after learning that his life was the result of a series of manipulations by the Sisterhood, Javicco drove a blade into his own body. And then his wife Natalya (Jodhi May) came in and killed Francesca (Tabu) with the very poisoned needle that was intended to kill her husband.

So is Emperor Corrino really dead? We recently got to participate in a roundtable interview with Dune: Prophecy stars Emily Watson (Valya) and Olivia Williams...

Dune: Prophecy Team Unpacks Finale Twists (‘Everything Has Changed’) — and Valya’s ‘Exciting’ New Destination

The following contains spoilers from the Dec. 22 Season 1 finale of HBO’s (newly renewed) Dune: Prophecy.

Given what happened in the Dune: Prophecy Season 1 finale, “Everything has changed,” says series star Emily Watson. And though she was speaking strictly for her character, Mother Superior Valya Harkonnen, the same could be said for the sci-fi prequel series as a whole.

‘Dune: Prophecy’ Showrunner Promises Much More Arrakis in Season 2
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Dune: Prophecy” Episode 6.

“Dune: Prophecy” finally took some characters to the fabled planet Arrakis in the finale of Season 1, but much more of the locale is to come in the second season.

The first season of the sci-fi prequel – which explored the rise of the Bene Gesserit 10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides – ended with Valya (Emily Watson) escaping to the desert planet with Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussina) and Keiran (Chris Mason) as Desmond (Travis Fimmel) took more control of Salusa Secundus.

Showrunner Alison Schapker admitted at a recent press conference that Arrakis has been “exerting its pull from afar” after a season of keeping its distance — “whether that’s in the economics of spice trade or the psychological aspects and nightmares that are sort of imagery of Arrakis and Desmond’s past seeping into everyone’s consciousness.” She emphasized the satisfaction of actually...

‘Dune: Prophecy’ Returned to Franchise’s Roots in Spicy Season Finale
Image
[This story contains major spoilers from the Dune: Prophecy season finale.]

The hierarchy of the Dune universe just changed.

No, the Rock was nowhere to be found on the season finale of HBO’s Dune: Prophecy. Instead, it’s a different rock taking center stage: Arrakis, the desert planet at the heart of Frank Herbert’s novels on which the show is based.

While Arrakis is referenced throughout the first six-episode season, Dune: Prophecy avoided actually bringing the planet to life onscreen, save for some brief (but important) holographic flashes. Now, the thing is well and fully on display, thanks to the last scene of the finale. The spicy world of Arraks is officially on the map, and stands ready for exploration in the recently announced season two.

In a press conference last week, Dune: Prophecy showrunner Alison Schapker said the change in scenery was decided on after “a season of Arrakis kind of exerting its pull from afar,...

Dorotea's Dune: Prophecy Return Explained - How She Takes Over Lila & What It Means For The Bene Gesserit
Image
Includes Spoilers for Dune: Prophecy season 1

Dune: Prophecy's season 1 finale sees Dorotea return and take over the Sisterhood in a shocking turn of events. Set 10,000 years earlier on Dune's timeline than the movies directed by Denis Villeneuve, the HBO prequel show examines a much earlier stage of the Bene Gesserit. The powers audiences know them by are still beginning to take shape, and they've only recently begun the genetic breeding plan that would eventually lead to Paul Atreides several centuries later. Much of that was put into effect by Mother Superior Raquella Berto-Anirul before Valya Harkonnen took over.

Emily Watson and Jessica Barden play Valya Harkonnen at different stages of her life in the Dune: Prophecy cast. In the show's first episode, viewers saw how the younger Valya came into power over the Sisterhood, using the Voice to kill Dorotea. Valya took over the organization by bloodshed, believing...

Dune Prophecy Episode 6: Francesca Actor Tabu Breaks Down Her Wavering Loyalty To Valya & Javicco
Image
Warning: Spoilers for the Dune: Prophecy season 1 finale! It's a good thing Dune: Prophecy was already renewed for season 2 because episode 6 left the Harkonnen sisters in very tricky situations. After learning that Desmond Hart is Tula's son (and therefore that she's been lying to her sister for the last few decades), Valya allows him to live and instead heads to Arrakis with Ynez. Her choice is significant, as she's already lost the trust of the Sisterhood now that Dorotea is back and brought the truth with her — she even lost one of her most loyal followers, Sister Francesca (Tabu), although in a very different way.

Despite having previously been willing to kill scores of Sisters at Valya's side in their youth, Francesca could no longer walk Valya's path when the time came to kill Emperor Javicco. She tries to save his life when he stabs himself in the Dune: Prophecy season finale,...

The Desmond Hart Thinking Machine Twist In Dune: Prophecy Explained
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for the Dune: Prophecy season 1 finale.

Desmond Hart has a shocking twist in the Dune: Prophecy season 1 finale that reveals the true origins of his magical powers fueled by the Thinking Machines. Dune: Prophecy is a six-part series based on the 2012 novel Sisterhood of Dune, which was written by original Dune author Frank Herbert's son, Brian, and Kevin J. Anderson. The story takes place more than 10,000 years before the rise of Paul Atreidies, which is chronicled in Denis Villenueve's Dune (2020) and Dune: Part Two (2024). Dune: Prophecy reveals the origins of the powerful shadow sisterhood known as the Bene Gesserit and how they manipulated the fate of humankind.

Dune: Prophecy episode 1 "The Hidden Hand" introduced Valya Harkonnen, a fierce and calculated leader, and her biological sister, Tula Harkonnen. Dune: Prophecy episode 2 reveals what happened to Lila and her grandmother, Reverend Mother Dorotea, after Tula and Valya encouraged her to endure The Agony.

Dune: Prophecy Season 1 Episode 6, 'The High-Handed Enemy' Review
Image
The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 6, "The High-Handed Enemy," which premiered Sunday, Dec. 22 on HBO.

To say Dune: Prophecy has been a wild ride is an understatement. Set 10,000 years before the events of Denis Villeneuve's Dune movies starring Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, the series primarily followed Emily Watson's Valya Harkonnen and her sister Tula (played by Olivia Williams) as they led the Bene Gesserit into performing a coup. Among the other storylines explored in Dune: Prophecy Season 1 included the ruling House Corrino gradually collapsing, the Sisterhood staging a rebellion, and Desmond Hart looking to destroy the Sisterhood for unknown reasons.

In the penultimate episode, "In Blood, Truth," major bombs were dropped. Chief among them was the revelation that Desmond Hart was actually Tula Harkonnen's biological son with Orry Atreides. Desmond similarly revealed he was aware of his mother being a member of the Sisterhood,...

Dune: Prophecy Ending Explained - All Twists, Reveals & What It Means For Season 2
Image
Dune: Prophecy's first season has come to a close, and there's a ton of new material and season 2 possibilities to speculate on. The HBO prequel series is set 10,000 years before the events of the Dune films, expanding Denis Villeneuve's epic film universe with a narrative about the early stages of the Bene Gesserit. Mostly based on the novel Dune Sisterhood by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, Dune: Prophecy has also developed several storylines of its own, many of which resolve in the season 1 finale.

Emily Watson leads Dune: Prophecy's cast as Valya Harkonnen, an ambitious woman who leads the Sisterhood in its mission to establish control and their secret genetic breeding plan throughout the Imperium. Her season 1 narrative ends with a confrontation with Desmond Hart, alongside her sister Tula, who's also Desmond's mother. After discovering that his whole life has been controlled by the Sisterhood,...

Dune: Prophecy hits the gas in eventful season 1 finale (Episode 6 review)
Image
Dune: Prophecy serves up a meaty finale worthy of its expanded hour-and-20-minute runtime. This was a proper climax to the six episodes so far, and now that we know the show is coming back for a second season, I can rest easy knowing we'll actually get to see what happens next.

And I want to see what happens next, despite some issues I've had with the show over the course of this first season. There's a feeling that Dune: Prophecy tried to fit too much into six episodes. Especially in these last two, things have felt a bit squished.

But there's still a lot to enjoy. Let's dive into the details for our final Dune: Prophecy review of the year:

Dune: Prophecy review: Episode 6, "The High-Handed Enemy"

At the end of the last episode, Tula learned that Desmond Hart is actually her son by Orry Atreides. At the beginning of this one,...

Dune: Prophecy Episode 6 Review - An Action-Packed Yet Frustrating Finale Offers A Promising Glimpse Into A Superior Season 2
Image
Warning: This review contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy's season finale

After Tula discovers Desmond Hart is her son, Dune: Prophecy delivers another mixed bag of an episode. Across its first five, the prequel has varied in quality. Billed as a Bene Gesserit origin story, the series has been light on the in-fighting within the Sisterhood, focusing instead on an anti-Imperium rebellion, authoritarianism under the reign of Emperor Javico Corrino, and a strange and troubling prophecy that has something to do with the Machine War that took place before the events of the series.

Set in the universe of Frank Herbert's Dune series, this sci-fi epic follows the political and spiritual struggles on the desert planet of Arrakis. As factions vie for control of the prized spice melange, a prophesied hero emerges, challenging the balance of power and the fate of the galaxy.

Dune: Prophecy episode 6 review: The first season comes to a slow, uninspired end
Image
Episode 6 of Dune: Prophecy on HBO brings the first season of the show to a close. As the story is wound up, we get more revelations about the bloody trail Valya has left on her path to controlling the Sisterhood, while the balance of power shifts in the Imperium, and Javicco's personal feelings get in the way of his duty.

Once again, we're shown how Valya is one of the most manipulative and even outright evil characters in the show, as she was responsible for the deaths of over a dozen sisters who were loyal to Mother Dorotea and refused to join her side when she moved to take control.

You could perhaps see how Tula, though she's done horrible things herself, is at the very least a tragic character, who can be pitied for how far she's fallen after following her older sister's example and pursuing revenge for the death of their brother,...

Dune: Prophecy Episode 6 Spoiler Review and Recap — The Conspiracy Unfolds
Image
Before its finale aired, HBO’s series Dune: Prophecy was renewed for a second season. After spending five episodes seeing the Bene Gesserit, the Corrinos, and the Insurgency led by Keiran Atreides bid for power of the Imperium, we are finally beginning to see each of their plans play out. To no surprise, none of their plans play out as they had hoped. But does Dune: Prophecy‘s finale deliver?

Dune: Prophecy Episode 6 Recap

The episode begins with Tula recalling the time when Valya (Jessica Barden) killed Dorotea. She and the other sisters decide to lie and say that Dorotea killed herself out of grief, hiding the truth of Valya’s betrayal.

Tula gets sick, and while Valya initially suspects that it’s because of her actions, Tula reveals that it is because she is pregnant. She wants to keep the baby even though it is Orry Atreides’s, and to her surprise,...

‘Dune: Prophecy’ Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Can Francesca Kill Javicco?
Image
HBO’s science fiction series based on Frank Herbert’s created universe, Dune: Prophecy, comes to an end with episode 6, although the show being renewed by HBO already means that there will be more seasons to come. The season 1 finale confirms what had already been teased at the end of episode 5, while the fates of the central characters are also revealed. With a rivalry wedged between Emperor Javicco Corrino and Empress Natalya, Valya Harkonnen plans to pull things back into her control, without any knowledge that the little power she still holds is also under threat back on Wallach IX.

Spoiler Alert

Is Desmond Hart really Tula’s son?

In Dune: Prophecy episode 5’s ending, Mother Superior Valya Harkonnen had sent some DNA samples of Desmond Hart back to Wallach IX so that Tula could run the DNA through the genetic archive of the Sisterhood and figure out a way to destroy the man.

Faoileann Cunningham Teases Dune: Prophecy’s Dangerous Finale
Image
The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 5, "In Blood, Truth," which premiered Sunday, Dec. 15 on HBO.

Sister Lila's death and resurrection was always expected to be a controversial act among the Sisterhood on Dune: Prophecy. It not only upsets the natural order of life and death, but risks exposing the Sisterhood's use of forbidden thinking machine technology. But Sister Jen (portrayed by Faoileann Cunningham) appears to be far more worried about Lila's ancestors possessing her body than in spreading Tula Harkonnen's dark secrets.

As the only Sister resisting the viral nightmares that the Sisterhood is experiencing, Tula enlists Jen as her confidant to guide a distressed Lila back into the world of the living. The only problem is that Lila is nowhere to be found, as her distant relative, Mother Superior Raquella, has taken over her body to discover the truth about the nightmares. In an interview with Cbr,...

Dune: Prophecy Turns Travis Fimmel’s Desmond Hart Into Its Replacement For Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides
Image
The shocking twist involving Desmond Hart in Dune: Prophecy proves that him and Paul Atreides are very similar characters. Paul Atreides is the most important character in the Dune films. He is the heir of House Atreides, who was left stranded on Arrakis with his mother, Lady Jessica, after his family was betrayed by the Harkonnens. However, he successfully integrates himself with the Fremen in Dune: Part Two, and eventually leads them in a battle against the forces of the Imperium.

Even though Dune: Prophecy takes place 10,000 years before the life of Paul Atreides, many aspects of the universe seen in the show are similar to the Dune movies. For example, Arrakis is still the most important planet in the universe, and the Imperium harvests spice from its surface. In Dune: Prophecy, Desmond Hart was a warrior on Arrakis who survived being swallowed by a sandworm. Desmond Hart has been...

'Dune: Prophecy' Renewed for Season 2 Ahead of Season 1 Finale
Image
Season 1 of Dune: Prophecy, the TV spin-off prequel to Denis Villeneuve’s groundbreaking sci-fi movies, ends next Sunday. Ahead of the season finale, which will pit the Sisterhood against one very unpredictable villain, HBO and Legendary Television have announced that the series has been renewed for a second season.

Now you can rest assured that not everything will have to be solved next Sunday. Dune: Prophecy started as a high-concept sci-fi TV show that didn't exactly resemble Denis Villeneuve's same-universe movies. However, its very first episode, watched by approximately 15 million viewers, ended on a cliffhanger that let everyone know that the series wasn't going to be a toned-down version of the world Villeneuve has put on screen for a new generation.

While Dune: Prophecy takes place in the same universe as the Dune movies based on Frank Herbert's sci-fi novels, the show is loosely based on the book trilogy...

Quick Links What Was Arya Stark's Journey in Game of Thrones? What Is Tula's Journey in Dune: Prophecy? Tula and Arya Found Hope Through Holy Signs Dune: Prophecy Gives Tula the Extra Story That Arya Lacked

The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 5, "In Blood, Truth," which premiered Sunday, Dec. 15 on HBO.

Over the course of Dune: Prophecy, comparisons have been made to The Penguin and Game of Thrones. The latter sticks out the most, as the Sisterhood tries to use Reverend Mothers in various Houses to control the Imperium. In essence, it's all about politics, sinister alliances, and betrayals.

With Valya Harkonnen's big plan as Mother Superior in full swing, her sister, Tula, becomes a key player. Interestingly, she has a strong parallel to Game of Thrones' Arya Stark. As Tula's story unravels, however, Dune: Prophecy actually makes her a better version of Arya, given...
