Chuck Russell’s Witchboard doesn’t share much in common with Kevin S. Tenney’s cult favorite from 1986 beyond the titular spirit board. Even then, the board in question has been updated to better reflect its moniker, with the standard Ouija board of the original film swapped out for an ornate circular relic with roots in 17th-century French witchcraft. But Russell’s ostensible remake does aim to channel one thing about its source of inspiration: that giddy amusement-park spirit that marked so much ’80s horror schlock.
This Witchboard moves the action from the anonymous California setting of the original to a bustling New Orleans, where a young couple, Emily (Madison Iseman) and up-and-coming star chef Christian (Aaron Dominguez), are in the midst of opening a new bistro in the French Quarter specializing in organic ingredients. While foraging out in the woods one day, they happen upon the spirit board, lying...

Blumhouse Productions, aka Blumhouse, is the leader of contemporary horror. After bursting onto the scene with the lo-fi sleeper "Paranormal Activity," Blumhouse has brought famous franchises back to life with "Halloween Kills" and "Exorcist: Believer," and backed original films such as the time-loop black comedy "Happy Death Day," Jordan Peele's masterwork "Get Out," or most recently, the messy sequel, "M3GAN 2.0." Blumhouse projects can range from the outrageously campy to the terrifyingly macabre.
During the real-life horrors of Covid-19, Blumhouse streamed its spooky creations directly into our living rooms. It was a treat to have movie releases to look forward to during Halloween of 2020, when the studio launched a film series on Amazon Prime Video called "Welcome to the Blumhouse." One of my most prized possessions is a poster of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors signed by Robert Englund, so to say that I was excited to talk with Chuck Russell, the director behind the Freddy Krueger film that got me rockin' with Dokken, is an understatement.
No stranger to adding his own unique flavor to beloved franchises with his work on the third Elm Street film, the 1988 remake of The Blob, and The Mummy prequel The Scorpion King (and I would also be remiss to not mention his groundbreaking work on The Mask), Chuck Russell has made his anticipated return to horror with a reimagining of Kevin Tenney's Witchboard.

If you thought that the first trailer for Witchboard was pretty good, wait until you see the red-band trailer for the remake of the 80s cult favorite, because it's even better. Hitting theaters on August 15, this updated version looks nothing like the 1986 original, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, as it takes things to a whole other level to deliver a horror movie that you won't soon forget.
While the new red-band trailer (seen below) does have a lot of the same imagery as the first one that was released a few weeks ago, this one is a heck of a lot bloodier, as we see things like a cat eating a severed hand, someone's throat being cut, and the pièce de résistance: someone ripping their face off to expose all the muscle and sinew that lies underneath. There's also a lot more sexuality, which was really only hinted at the first time around.

"There is such a thing as destiny, Christian, and hers is not with you..." Oh damn! The Avenue has debuted a brutal second trailer for the horror movie Witchboard, which is the old original name for Ouija boards (also called a Spirit Board). They made a Ouija board movie, and the original Witchboard was turned into a cult fave horror film in 1986 also called Witchboard. In this new update on Witchboard, Emily & Christian start a café in New Orleans, but their aspirations unravel when they find a cursed Witchboard, an ancient artifact connected to spirits. Enthralled by the Witchboard's allure, Emily slips into fixation, so Christian consults with Alexander Babtiste, a secretive occultist harboring his own evil plans. As her hold on sanity weakens, Babtiste’s intent to exploit the Witchboard’s dark force emerges during a menacing masked gala. Emily and Christian must destroy the Witchboard's hex before its...

‘Witchboard’ – Red Band Trailer for Chuck Russell’s Remake Peels Off Faces and Spills a Lot of Blood
Now this is what we’re talking about. A much better Red Band trailer for director Chuck Russell’s horror return Witchboard was debuted by Collider, and this one is finally starting to feel like a horror flick from the director of Dream Warriors, The Blob, and… The Mask!
Yes, Chuck Russell directed all of the above films, and yes, we’re talking about The Mask starring Jim Carrey. Speaking of which, a dude’s face gets peeled off like a mask in the new Red Band trailer for the Witchboard remake, which we invite you to check out down below.
Look for Witchboard to release in theaters on August 15, 2025. The new film is set in present day New Orleans and centers on “a cursed artifact unleashes a vengeful witch, drawing a young couple into a deadly spiral of possession, temptation, and occult terror.”

On August 15, an evil unlike any other will be unleashed — but why wait until then when you can get a taste of it right now? Today, Collider is thrilled to debut the exclusive Red Band trailer for the upcoming supernatural horror flick, Witchboard, which puts A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors helmer, Chuck Russell, back in the genre for a truly one-of-a-kind feature. Serving as a remake of Kevin Tenny’s 1986 film of the same name, the plot might look familiar, but comparing the two will certainly show the original’s age when it comes to clarity and effects. Starring Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things), Madison Iseman (Annabelle Comes Home), and Aaron Dominguez (Sitting in Bars with Cake), the teaser reveals a terrifying thrill ride that you won’t want to miss.

The return of director Chuck Russell to horror feels like an event. Decades after he defined a certain brand of spectacular, practical-effects-driven horror with classics like A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and his gooey remake of The Blob, he steps back into the genre with Witchboard.
This is not a direct continuation but a complete reimagining of the 1980s slumber party staple. Russell swaps the familiar for a grander, stranger mythology. The film sets its stage in the atmospheric French Quarter of New Orleans, where we meet Emily (Madison Iseman) and Christian (Aaron Dominguez), an ambitious young couple pouring their life savings into opening a new Creole restaurant.
Their dreams take a dark turn when Emily, foraging for ingredients in the woods, unearths an ancient pendulum board. What begins as a fascination with the ornate object quickly descends into a dangerous obsession, awakening a malevolent power that has been dormant for centuries.

When my middle-school English teacher gave the class carte blanche for our fall book reports, I was the only one whose pick had been turned into a horror movie. I Know What You Did Last Summer was currently playing in theaters back then, and I had yet to read the literary basis by Lois Duncan. So my choice felt natural. Had I known the novel varied so greatly from Jim Gillespie’s movie, though, I probably would have written about something else.
Being a young and inexperienced horror fan who preferred the genre’s most simple and overt pleasures, I initially found Duncan’s more subdued approach to a hit-and-run, as opposed to the slasher execution penned by Kevin Williamson, somehow less interesting. It wasn’t until years later that I realized my mistake.

1997 marked the establishment of Matt Damon as a household name. His greatest accomplishment of that year, of course, is the beloved Good Will Hunting, which he co-wrote with Ben Affleck and co-starred in with Affleck and Robin Williams, catapulting him to immediate success. However, less than a month prior, he got the chance to be the leading man in The Rainmaker, an adaptation of John Grisham's 1995 novel of the same name, written and directed by The Godfather mastermind Francis Ford Coppola. In the context of Damon's career, the legal drama largely exists in the shadow of the titanic roles that came after, from The Departed to Ocean's Eleven, The Martian, and beyond. Starting on July 1, though, viewers will have a chance to revisit the acclaimed film on Paramount+.
The Rainmaker pairs Damon up with Danny DeVito in one of the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star's rare dramatic roles.

Hold onto your hats, horror fans, because the new trailer for the Witchboard remake is finally here, and it's nothing like the beloved 80s cult-classic. Directed by Chuck Russell, this version promises to deliver a whole new experience that's light on laughs, and heavy on supernatural thrills.
Featuring Madison Iseman (star of the USA Network's upcoming adaptation of John Grisham's The Rainmaker), the Witchboard trailer kicks off with a bang, showcasing not the Ouija board that was at the heart of the 1986 film, but a pendulum board, which, we guess is kind of scary? "There are powerful forces at play," says Jamie Campbell Bower's character of Alexander Babtiste shortly thereafter as we're treated to some erotic scenes before Iseman is assaulted by disembodied hands coming up from her mattress to grab her. In the early ’90s, I rode my bike to Van Lee’s Video, a local video rental store. In the back of the shop, a darkened room housed the horror section and two arcade cabinets: Street Fighter II: Championship Edition and Mortal Kombat II. It’s where all the cool kids would hang out. Surrounded by familiar faces like Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, movies like Waxwork, Evil Toons, Phantasm, and others lined the slotted, mirrored walls. Among the collection was Kevin Tenney’s Witchboard, the type of horror movie you watched when your parents weren’t around. We’re calling it the official return of Blue Sky programming, and it can’t come too soon.
If you’ve been pining for the heyday of USA Network — when law was a little looser, characters were a little quirkier, and drama still knew how to have fun —The Rainmaker might just be the comeback you’ve been waiting for.
Today, the official trailer was released, and we admit it. It knocks our socks off.

From the mind of John Grisham and the producers at Blumhouse and Lionsgate, The Rainmaker premieres on August 15 on USA, with episodes available on Peacock one week later.
It stars Milo Callaghan as Rudy Baylor, a scrappy new lawyer who loses one job before lunch and lands another under Lana Parilla‘s Bruiser, a no-nonsense attorney who runs her firm out of a rehabbed Taco Hut.
Is Netflix Making the Right Move with a Heartstopper Movie?...

How did Jack Black nail his gender-swap role in Jumanji?(Photo Credit –Facebook)
Sony Pictures’ Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle revived the beloved 1995 classic with a bold, modern twist—reimagining the mysterious board game as a retro-style video game that drew players directly into its world.
Instead of the jungle spilling into suburbia, this film flipped the script: the jungle consumed its players via video game. Four high school students were sucked into the game and took on avatars wildly different from their real-world selves, turning the adventure into a body-swap comedy with a digital edge.
In the movie, Dwayne Johnson embodied a socially awkward gamer trapped in a heroic explorer’s frame, while Kevin Hart portrayed a confident jock who ended up as a short, fast-talking zoologist.
But perhaps the most striking transformation belonged to Jack Black, who hilariously played Professor Shelly Oberon—the in-game persona of Bethany White,...

Hollywood fan-favorite Jack Black gives fans a major "spoiler alert" regarding the future of the Jumanjifranchise.
During an April 1 appearance on Today, Black was asked if he could confirm development on any sequel projects to his previous films. Black noted that it is unlikely School of Rock will be getting a follow-up film any time soon, though he promised that a fourth Jumanji film is "in the works." Black added that there was a "high" probability of a fourth Jumanji entering production, stating simply, "Spoiler alert, I'm in it!"
The Jumanji franchise kicked off with the 1995 film based on Chris Van Allsburg's 1981 children's picture book of the same name.
