Image
Hollywood icon Susan Sarandon arrested in New York during wage protest.

Per Entertainment Tonight, the Academy Award winner was arrested alongside Ana Maria Archila and other demonstrators who turned up to protest for full minimum wages for mothers who are tipped workers. The protest was headed up by the nonprofit One Fair Wage. Many states allow such workers to be paid as little as $2.13 per hour. During the protest, Sarandon could be seen chanting "one fair wage" along with other protesters. Neither Sarandon nor her representatives have yet to issue an official statement on her arrest, which reportedly amounted to Sarandon being handcuffed and processed before being issued a citation for an impending court appearance and subsequently released.

Not Going Quietly review – touching portrait of Als activist Ady Barkan
Nicholas Bruckman
Documentary follows Barkan, who has motor neurone disease, as he campaigns for better public healthcare in the US

This is a touching if a tad treacly portrait of Ady Barkan, an inspiring American activist who has the terminal neurodegenerative disease Als (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis Aka motor neurone disease). Filmed over several years and directed by Nicholas Bruckman, it starts with Barkan, originally a lawyer, already well into his career as a protester and campaigner, particularly on issues that affect people on low incomes. When first met he seems like a loving family man, devoted to his wife Rachael, an academic, and their adorable baby son Carl. But then he’s diagnosed with Als, and naturally everything changes. The film includes a tearful, wrenching clip he shot himself in the middle of the night after he found out and couldn’t sleep for worry. His health seems to deteriorate quickly – though...

Donald Trump Praises Women Supporting Brett Kavanaugh: “It Is A Beautiful Thing To See”
Hours before Senate votes for Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court, Donald Trump took to Twitter to continue to show support of the “good man” who was accused of sexual assault by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. In particular, he praised the women who were also supporting the Scotus nominee.

“Women for Kavanaugh, and many others who support this very good man, are gathering all over Capital Hill in preparation for a 3-5 P.M. Vote,” he wrote. “It is a beautiful thing to see – and they are not paid professional protesters who are handed expensive signs. Big day for America!”

The latter part of his tweet is a callback to his conspiracy theory that many of Kavanaugh’s protestors, specifically Ana Maria Archila and Maria Gallagher, were “paid professionals” hired by George Soros. The two women confronted Sen. Jeff Flake to call for the FBI investigation.
