Dead Outlaw will play its final performance on Broadway on Sunday, June 29, producers announced today.
The critically lauded musical, nominated for seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, opened at the Longacre Theatre on Sunday, April 27. When it closes it will have played 14 previews and 73 regular performances.
Dead Outlaw is the third Broadway show, following Smash and Real Women Have Curves, to announce its closing after being shut out at the Tonys.
With music and lyrics by David Yazbek and Erik Della Penna, and a book by Itamar Moses, Dead Outlaw tells the strange-but-true tale of Elmer McCurdy, a bank robber killed in a shoot-out in 1911. His embalmed corpse went unclaimed and was put on display, sometimes mistaken for a mannequin, in various carnivals, wax museums and even amusement parks until the 1970s.

On Sunday, the annual Tony Awards saw the best of Broadway commended for their skill at Radio City Music Hall.
Hosted by Cynthia Erivo, the 78th Tony Awards show was attended by numerous star celebrities on the screen, yet still firmly served as a platform to elevate the unsung musical cast and crew of live performances.
In addition to the many smooth quips Erivo delivered on stage, she also showcased her stellar vocals, singing her original number “Sometimes All You Need Is A Song.”
Notably, the 2025 awards show featured three historic wins for Asian American performers, who are regularly subject to stereotypes and prejudice in the business. The first Asian male to win a Tony was B.D. Wong for M. Butterfly, in 1988, and the first Asian woman was Lea Salonga for Miss Saigon in 1991.

Edge-of-seat drama. Stunning twists. Musical performances that brought down the house. The 2025 Tony Awards followed a script that any Broadway aficionado would appreciate.
While the crowd-pleasing Maybe Happy Ending dominated the night with six wins — including Best Musical, Best Musical Actor (Darren Criss), Best Musical Director, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Scenic Design for a Musical — there were some shocking moments.
In one of the night's most highly anticipated matchups, Nicole Scherzinger took home the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in Sunset Boulevard, edging out Broadway’s most celebrated star, Audra McDonald. McDonald, earning her record-extending 11th nomination for her portrayal of Mama Rose in Gypsy, had been favored to win following her recent Drama Desk Award victory and surveys of Tony voters that showed her holding a narrow lead (likely due to the recent Patti LuPone controversy).

Sutton Foster, Bernadette Peters, Lea Salonga, Idina Menzel, and (if I may invoke her name) Patti LuPone would have been a monster of an all-star Tony nomination lineup in any other season. But those past winners, each a major force in musical theater history, missed the ballot despite their (almost uniformly) strong showings on Broadway this year.
If it’s uncouth to define a season by who didn’t make the Tony cut, that group of also-rans is a sign of the riches on offer. And if this season was in part distinguished by the arrival of a cavalcade of Hollywood A-listers, the nominations also highlight how many Broadway mainstays have set up residence to deliver excellence year after year: Nominees Jonathan Groff, Danya Taymor, Kara Young, Justin Peck, and Dede Ayite all won Tonys last season.

A cemetery in Guthrie, Oklahoma, is seeing an unusual increase in foot traffic lately, ever since real-life dead outlaw Elmer McCurdy has become Broadway’s most famous corpse.
McCurdy’s bizarre tale is the subject of the Tony-nominated musical Dead Outlaw. The newly minted celebrity died in a shoot-out with an Oklahoma sheriff’s posse after robbing a train in 1911. He was 31, and so estranged from whatever loved ones he had that his thoroughly embalmed and well-preserve corpse was used, sometimes knowingly, sometimes not, as a sideshow attraction, movie prop, wax museum exhibit and, finally, as a hanged man in a funhouse exhibition at The Pike amusement park in Long Beach, California.
It was only when a production crew for The Six Million Dollar Man was filming scenes for a carnival episode in 1976 that McCurdy’s humanity was rediscovered: A prop man broke the arm of the “mannequin,” exposing bone and muscle tissue.

This June, Jonathan Groff will have the rare chance to win Tony Awards in two consecutive years. If he repeats last year’s triumph for Merrily We Roll Along with one for this year’s Just In Time, he’ll join a very exclusive club of six Broadway greats: Laurie Metcalf, Judith Light, Stephen Spinella, Sandy Dennis, Gwen Verdon, and Shirley Booth.
For Groff, the two-in-a-row possibility, exciting enough, even has a hint more frisson: Just In Time, a biographical musical of Bobby Darin, marks a career first for the busy actor. “I’ve never been part of a project from its conception. Eight years ago this month, actually, Ted Chapin asked me to do a night of Bobby Darin music at the 92nd Street Y and I read this book called Dream Lovers: The Magnificent Shattered Lives of Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee, written by Dodd Darin, the son of Bobby and Sandy,...

Before taking the stage to perform "Something From Nothing," the hosts spoke to Tony-nominated actor Andrew Durand, who plays the titular outlaw. "I love this character. He's such a great antihero. He's not a great guy but you want him to succeed because we all have that grain of humanity in us and you want that for him. He never quite gets it in life, and his afterlife turns out to be even bigger and more exciting than the time that he was alive." “It really feels like the most personal show to me,” reveals David Yazbek about his new musical Dead Outlaw. The composer has written music and lyrics for six Broadway productions and has earned Tony Award nominations for each one, winning for The Band’s Visit in 2018. Of his latest effort, Yazbek says, “The reason why the story of Elmer McCurdy has stuck with me for decades is because it works on a lot of different levels, and the deepest level for me has to do with mortality and desire.” Yazbek and many of the cast and creatives of Dead Outlaw recently sat down with Gold Derby and other journalists at the 2025 Tony Awards Meet the Nominees press event.

Just in Time star Jonathan Groff in currently in second place in Gold Derby's Tony Awards predictions for Best Actor in a Musical, only behind fellow Glee alum Darren Criss for Maybe Happy Ending. The former triumphed for Merrily We Roll Along just last year, so if he prevails again, he'd be the first individual in history to win this category consecutively.
Prior to Groff, five men were Tony nominated for Best Actor in a Musical two years in a row, but didn't emerge victorious:
Gregory Hines in 1980 for Comin' Uptown and 1981 for Sophisticated Ladies George Hearn in 1983 for A Doll's Life and 1984 for La Cage aux Folles (the latter of which resulted in a win) Patrick Wilson in 2001 for The Full Monty and 2002 for Oklahoma! Michael Cerveris in 2006 for Sweeney Todd and 2007 for LoveMusik Brian d'Arcy James in 2023 for Into the Woods and 2024 for Days of Wine and Roses...

A new musical and two original plays will lead the 2025 Tony Awards nominations, according to Gold Derby's official odds in 17 categories ahead of Thursday's announcement.
Death Becomes Her, a stage adaptation of the 1992 cult classic comedy film, will have the biggest tally of all shows with eight. It's expected haul follows its 12 nominations at the Outer Critics Circle last week, where it similarly bested all other shows. Two original musicals, Dead Outlaw and Maybe Happy Ending, will tie at six nominations apiece. Gypsy and Sunset Boulevard, which are our leading contenders for the Best Musical Revival prize, and British import Operation Mincemeat will also likely score well with nominators with five bids each.

“I became completely obsessed with this show as soon as I read the script,” shares Julia Knitel about the new Broadway musical Dead Outlaw. The show centers on the shocking, unbelievably true story of Elmer McCurdy, an amateur robber shot down by a sheriff’s posse in the early 1900s whose mummified corpse floated around under many guises for 60 years.
