★☆☆☆☆Hollywood has made a habit of reappropriating myths and fairytales, setting about debunking and demystifying them for modern audiences. The latest such icon to undergo this particular treatment of refinement is the son of Zeus himself, the mighty Hercules (2014). Dwayne Johnson might ably fill the demigod's armour but the story labours to fill in the man behind the legend, putting a tired modern twist on his famous adventures. Based on a graphic novel by comics scribe Steve Moore, this is an attempt to ground the character in historical epic. Sadly, director Brett Ratner actually devalues one of the most enduring of heroes, turning a potential fun fantasy thrill ride into homogeneous rubbish.

In the words of the big man himself, Dwayne Johnson was born to play Hercules.  With apologies to Kellan Lutz, there's only one man in Hollywood these days that could convince audiences that he bested the Nemean Lion, beheaded the Lernaean Hydra, and beat back the Erymanthian Boar, and that man is The Rock.  Unfortunately, Brett Ratner's take on the Hercules legend chose not to explore the hero's twelve labors, but to adapt Steve Moore and Admira Wijaya's graphic novel, "Hercules: The Thracian Wars."  Perhaps if that had been communicated more clearly in the film's marketing, audiences (and maybe even critics) would have given Hercules more of a chance, since it's a surprisingly fun action-adventure film that lets Johnson swing away while surrounding him with a strong supporting cast.  Now that the film's available on Blu-ray, you can check it out for yourself. When your father is a god, your life is bound to be pretty interesting. As a result, it is never less than astonishing how often the story of Hercules ignores the rich source material, transplanting the demigod to whatever environment is currently in vogue with diminished results. Twice this year, we were treated to variant interpretations of the Greek myth with vastly different results. Coming in second and by far the inferior of the two, Brett Ratner’s Hercules is one of the weakest films of the year. Once more one wonders how Ratner keeps getting hired since clearly his limited directorial vision has been spent.

Chicago – Dwayne Johnson slams and jams in the bland “Hercules,” the “Space Jam” he never made when known as a brow-raised wrestler under his birth name “The Rock.” This ferociously generic take on the mythological hero focuses on Hercules with a group of mercenaries (played by Rufus Sewell among others) as they train a group of gee-shucks farmers to become warriors, while they project legends of immortality onto Johnson’s secretly mortal hero.

The Rock has finished laying the smack down in ancient Greece. Filming has concluded on Hercules: the Thracian Wars. Some new behind-the-scenes images have been released.

There was quite a bit of talk about Hercules at NY Comic-Con as a trailer was released for an upcoming Hercules film called Hercules: the Legend Begins, starring Twilight actor Kellan Lutz. However, the previews of that film seem to be getting a lukewarm reaction. Still, Hercules fans have something else to look forward to. Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson is bringing a larger and more muscular version of the legendary Greek hero to the screen in Hercules: the Thracian Wars.

Based on the graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars by Steve Moore and Admira Wijaya, the film is directed by Brett Ratner. Production on the film has been well-documented by the Rock himself, who has been sharing set photos from the movie with over 5 million followers on Twitter.

New York Comic Con brought with it a first look at a trailer for Hercules: The Legend Begins, an origin story for the Greek demigod that stars Twilight‘s Kellan Lutz in the lead role, and while it featured a few cool-looking action shots a lot of Screen Rant readers were underwhelmed by by what they saw. Luckily there is a second Hercules movie on the way, featuring a loinclothed Dwayne”The Rock” Johnson as an older (and significantly larger) version of the hero who takes up arms against a brutal warlord in order to help the King of Thrace and his daughter.

2013 has seen White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen join the ever-growing list of dueling Hollywood movies with virtually identical plots, and it seems as though next year’s pair of contenders will be Renny Harlin’s Hercules 3D, in which Twilight star Kellan Lutz will play the demigod hero, and Brett Ratner’s Hercules, in which Dwayne Johnson will star as a slightly older Hercules in a story that takes place “after the labors, and after the legend…”

Wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is one of the biggest, most muscle-bound dudes in Hollywood, but the hulking man appears to have transformed himself into a true colossus for his role as Hercules in Brett Ratner's upcoming "Hercules: The Thracian Wars."

Late last month The Rock took to Twitter to share his insane 22-week diet for the film, which has him consuming about three pounds of meat and fish a day, as well as 14 egg whites. He also hits the gym every morning -- and not for a breezy spin on the elliptical.

Earlier this week he tweeted behind-the-scenes proof that the extreme diet and workout regimen -- the epitome of a Herculean effort -- is doing its job, building the actor into a mortal version of the Greek demigod.

MGM's Hercules casts Dwayne Johnson in adaptation of Steve Moore's Hercules: The Thracian Wars graphic novel. Brett Ratner-directed film scripted by Ryan Condol, based on the Radical Publishing graphic novel by Moore, is being produced by MGM's Roger Birnbaum, Gary Barber and Jonathan Glickman as well as Film 44's Peter Berg and Sarah Aubrey and Radical Pictures Barry Levine. Johnson is working with helmer Michael Bay in Pain and Gain alongside Mark Wahlberg, and perhaps Anthony Mackie, who is currently in talks to join the low-budget pic.
