The CW is known for being the home of DC TV shows. As the network shifted from being The WB to The CW, Greg Berlanti capitalized on the success of Smallville by creating Arrow. The Stephen Amell-led show was beloved by DC fans and spawned the Arrowverse, as shows like The Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow followed.

Superman & Lois is the only DC show that remains on The CW after the new majority owners, Nexstar, canceled and forced various DC TV shows to end. This happened as Nexstar pursued its aim of making The CW profitable, but this came with a great downside. The image of The CW is not what it used to be. There are barely any genre-related shows left on the network, let alone DC shows. It's a great shame as the DC-led era of The CW comes to an end later this year with Season 4 of Superman & Lois.

Actor Jensen Ackles, who has previously voiced Batman in animated films, was almost cast as Batman in the TV series Gotham Knights. Ackles was unable to join the show due to scheduling conflicts, but fans still hope to see him play the Dark Knight in the future. Ackles' role as Batman in Gotham Knights would have been significant as it would have been his first live-action portrayal of the character.

The DC Universe hasn’t found its Batman yet, but fans of the Caped Crusader already have one actor in mind, and he almost played Batman not long ago. The series finale of Gotham Knights aired earlier this week, and one cast member has now spoken out about the ending of the series. Gotham Knights co-creator Natalie Abrams didn’t want to leave without saying goodbye.

On the night of the drama’s series finale on the CW, Abrams — who created the DC Comics-based drama with Chad Fiveash and James Patrick Stoteraux — posted a heartfelt message Tuesday for her beloved “BatBrats” who were about to see their show end after one season.

The series from DC, Warner Bros. TV and Greg Berlanti Prods. was a respectable ratings performer but was canceled to make way for the network’s new (see: cheaper) business model.

“Gotham Knights is coming to an end,” Abrams said on Twitter. “It’s taken a while to accept this fact, to grieve the loss of something so unique and ethereal as this first project. From the moment I pitched Greg Berlanti the two sentences that would become this oddball underdog of a show, it no longer belonged to me.

Gotham Knights star Misha Collins recently shared his thoughts on the DC superhero drama's cancellation.

The actor, who portrays Gotham City District Attorney Harvey Dent on the show, released a statement on Twitter where he expressed disappointment in having his time playing the iconic DC character cut short. "Just got back on the grid after unplugging for a week to hear the news that [Gotham Knights] was canceled by [The CW] and won’t be able to find a new home," Collins' statement read. "I’m incredibly bummed, and selfishly disappointed to not be able to fully explore my 'villain arc,' but I’m proud of the show we made and so grateful to have been able to work with such a smart, caring, good group of people."

Last week was a good one for the NHL’s Golden Knights, who won the Stanley Cup, but not for The CW’s Gotham Knights, which was canceled after its freshman season. Today Misha Collins, who starred as the dashing, idealistic District Attorney and Gotham City mayoral candidate Harvey Dent, took to social media to reflect on the superhero series and thank its Bat Brat fans.

“I’m incredibly bummed, and selfishly disappointed to not be able to fully explore my ‘villain arc,'” he wrote on Instagram (see the post below), “but I’m proud of the show we made and so grateful to have been able to work with such a smart, caring, good group of people.”

Said “villain arc” was to be Dent’s transformation into the horribly disfigured and shunned Batman adversary Two-Face.

According to Deadline, the DC drama series will not return for a second season after being canceled by The CW. The first, and now final season, of Gotham Knights is expected to consist of 13 episodes, with Episode 12 "City of Owls" expected to air on the network on June 20. While Gotham Knights was canceled, two other scripted shows, Superman & Lois and All American: Homecoming, have been renewed for additional seasons. "We love all those shows, and they all do very well for us in different ways," said The CW’s Entertainment President Brad Schwartz in May, prior to the cancelation, regarding Superman & Lois, All American: Homecoming and Gotham Knights.

The DC Comics-based drama was one of three scripted series whose fate had been left in limbo along with Superman & Lois and All American: Homecoming, which both are being renewed. A total of four existing CW dramas will make it to next season, along with previously renewed All American and Walker.

Gotham Knights has been a respectable ratings performer and, under different circumstances, could’ve made it to a second season but, with the business model of the CW changing under its new ownership, only a handful of highly rated (by CW standards) existing scripted series could make the cut.

“We love all those shows, and they all do very well for us in different ways” the CW’s Entertainment President Brad Schwartz said last month about Superman & Lois, All American: Homecoming and Gotham Knights.

Unlike the majority of past CW DC shows, though, this series is firmly rooted in Gotham and centered around The Dark Knight — sort of. Like Batwoman before it, Gotham Knights is only tangentially connected to Batman, with the character existing in this universe but not being included as a main character. Instead, Gotham Knights shifts its focus to Bruce Wayne's adopted teenage son and a group of other teenagers. Cartwright will play Eunice Harmon. She will make her debut in Episode 4 and recur in Episode 7.

The CW’s Gotham Knights has cast a pair of key recurring roles, with Ethan Embry and Sunny Mabrey joining the DC Comics drama.

The real-life married couple will play husband and wife on the series as well, with Mabrey debuting as Crystal Brown in the show’s fifth episode and Embry first appearing in episode six as Arthur Brown. In the comics, Arthur Brown is the alter ego of Batman villain Cluemaster.

“We were blown away by Sunny’s audition for Gotham Knights.
