Male-dominated sport? No problem. That’s the attitude Susie Wolff adopted before she went full throttle into the racing world.
The 42-year-old former professional racing driver and current managing director of F1 Academy — a female-only racing league — is using her experience and expertise as the most recent female driver to get behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car during a Grand Prix weekend to help clear a path for other women in motorsport.
In just two F1 Academy racing seasons (and currently in its third), Wolff has already made huge steps forward with the program designed to develop and promote female talent in motorsport, and now F1 fans, and maybe even some new ones, can witness the impact of the league with Netflix’s new docuseries, F1: The Academy, produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine.

If you think Formula 1 is all podium Champagne and men in racing jackets, think again. Netflix’s newest sports series, F1: The Academy, is here to shift gears — and perspectives — by spotlighting the rising generation of women tearing up the track. In the 2024 F1 Academy racing series, it was the women breaking barriers in one of the most demanding (and male-dominated) sports in the world.
The seven-part series offers unprecedented access to the adrenaline, grit, and emotional turmoil on race day, and everything that leads up to it. At the center of it all is Susie Wolff, a former professional driver and now managing director of F1 Academy. In 2014, Wolff was the first woman in 22 years to participate in a Formula 1 weekend, and remains one of the most respected people in motorsport. Drive to Survive was created by James Gay-Rees in collaboration with Netflix and Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (Fia) to give fans a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most celebrated motorsports. The show is notoriously known for blending racing drama with real-life racing incidents and footage and then pushing the drama slider to the max.
For the past six years, they have given viewers high-quality footage of what happens behind the paddock, shown rivalries that even the racers didn’t know existed, and stirred the pot enough to create friction among people involved in the racing scene. Surprisingly, they have also given enough confidence to casuals to give opinions about races and drivers they otherwise have no clue about.
This year, we expect nothing different, other than the fact that we won’t get to see the iconic team principal Guenther Steiner, who left Haas to be replaced by Ayao Komatsu.

Drive to Survive lives, breathes, and thrives on drama. From its very first season to the latest, the stakes have snowballed into grand proportions as the legacy and reputation of F1 team principals now comes into play.
Ironically, the series was always supposed to be about Formula 1 and its on-track racing. But Netflix quickly deduced that the real action unfolds behind the scenes and the races only held a fraction of the drama as compared to the seething age-old rivalry between the team bosses on the grid.

Now, with each progressive season of the documentary series, the fans get to witness the never-ending catfights between F1 veterans. As every team boss seems intent on taking their rivals down, the fights get dirtier and messier with time. As entertaining as the races may be, Drive to Survive has now shifted most of its narrative focus on the...

We here at Tubefilter have written a lot about the continuing prevalence of sports content on social platforms, streaming, and traditional TV. As broadcast and linear TVs’ market share continues to decline, sports content viewership has remained strong–and sports are finding deeper connections with passionate audiences on platforms like YouTube and Reddit, too.
But while we’ve mostly focused on sports like golf and basketball, there’s been a sleeper roaring in the wings: Formula 1.
If you’ve been in digital fandom spaces at all, you’ll know Formula 1–the international, ultra high speed, single-seater motor car races–experienced a massive resurgence during Covid, with much of that fresh traffic generated by hit Netflix documentary Drive to Survive. The U.S. fanbase alone now comprises over 45 million people.
And the demographic where it’s seeing the most growth? 16- to 24-year-old girls.
