Michelle Obama on Hollywood Advice for Malia and Her Favorite ‘White Lotus’ Moment
Image
In front of a rapt Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival audience Aug. 9, Michelle Obama co-hosted with her brother a live taping of their podcast Imo With Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, produced through their production company Higher Ground. The former First Lady returned to the fest, where she and former President Barack Obama made a surprise appearance in 2022 to support their Netflix documentary Descendant.

Pinch-hitting for advertised guest Teyana Taylor, who stars in the upcoming feature One Battle After Another with Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro, and who canceled due to unexpected vocal surgery, was The White Lotus‘ Emmy-nominated Natasha Rothwell.

During the conversation, Obama shared a moment she particularly enjoyed about Rothwell’s twice Emmy-nominated role as Belinda. “Not only does Belinda get her groove thing on,” she said, “but one of my favorite scenes, because this is a luxury resort, [is] where you’re...

Michelle Obama and Natasha Rothwell on ‘Who Tf Did I Marry?,’ Being Seen and Community Building
Image
Former First Lady Michelle Obama took the stage with her brother and co-host Craig Robinson for a live-taping of their hit podcast, Higher Ground’s “Imo With Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson” at the 23rd annual Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (Mvaaff). The hosts sat down to chat with Emmy-nominated “The White Lotus” actress Natasha Rothwell in a wide-ranging interview that revolved around her expansive career, why people always confuse her for Michelle Buteau and when we’ll finally see “Who Tf Did I Marry?” on the small screen.

“I had no aspirations for Hollywood,” Rothwell told Obama after she was asked about her unique career path. “I thought I was going to be a Broadway theater actor. I thought that Audra McDonald and I would be best friends. I went to college for acting, but I would write my auditions. So writing was a huge part of my process as well.

Why Carrie Coon’s Emmy chances for ‘The White Lotus’ will be helped by ‘The Gilded Age’
Image
Last year, HBO's The Gilded Age made a major breakthrough at the Emmys by scoring six nominations, including Best Drama Series, for its second season. The third season is currently airing and won't be eligible until next year's Emmys. However, its presence could still be helpful for star Carrie Coon as she contends for her supporting role in another prestige HBO drama, The White Lotus.

This marks Coon's third Emmy nomination, after Fargo in 2017 and The Gilded Age in 2024. On the third season of Mike White's anthology series, Coon plays Laurie Duffy, a recently divorced corporate lawyer from New York City, who, along with her two longtime friends (Leslie Bibb and Michelle Monaghan), reunite on a girls' trip to Thailand.

Based on the early predictions for Best Drama Supporting Actress, the third time will be the charm for Coon. And having a juicy, highly visible role in The Gilded Age will only help.

You season 5 star disappointed by Emmys 2025 snub, and we agree
Image
There's certainly a lot of impressive shows, actors, creatives, and more nominated at the 2025 Emmys this time around, and Netflix alone has gotten itself a good amount of attention with a number of its different programs. However when it comes to You season 5, which meets the eligibility period, there's one star who's disappointed by their snub. And we definitely agree!

Actress Anna Camp, who joined the psychological thriller's final season, took on the role of identical twins Raegan and Maddie Lockwood. The two are Katie's sisters, and became Joe Goldberg's sisters-in-law. Their stories were certainly complicated, and Camp does not have a twin in real life. She ended up playing both characters, and did so wonderfully!

Carrie Coon Has One Condition To Return For The White Lotus Season 4
Image
Not everyone was happy with the season 3 finale of "The White Lotus," but nobody denied Carrie Coon's performance in that big emotional monologue she gave. There's a reason fans of "The Leftovers" and "The Gilded Age" were so excited to have her on the show, and she more than delivered on our expectations.

Although "The White Lotus" is largely made up of standalone seasons, a small handful of characters have still returned to their roles in fun, surprising ways. It's technically possible that Coon's character, Laurie, might return for season 4, and a lot of fans want it to happen. Does it seem likely that Laurie, someone not as rich as her friend Jacelyn, would be returning to an expensive White Lotus resort so soon? Probably not, but we didn't think Natasha Rothwell's Belinda would be able to do that either, and the writers found a way.

Coon...

Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast Roundtable Dissects the Emmy Nominations — Including This Year’s Biggest Shockers
Image
It’s a “Severance” world. The Apple TV+ series dominated this year’s Emmy nominations with 27 nods, and despite the show’s critical and ratings acclaim, Variety‘s Awards Circuit podcast hosts were still taken aback.

“Huge,” said Variety chief awards editor Clayton Davis. “I don’t think I even thought that much. That is more than ‘Shōgun’ last year.”

Davis was joined by Variety executive editor, TV, Michael Schneider, as well as senior TV features editor Emily Longeretta and senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay for the Awards Circuit Roundtable. Listen below!

The quartet also looked at some of the other big news from this week’s nods, including another Apple TV+ powerhouse, “The Studio,” which led all comedies with 23.

“We all knew ‘The Studio’ was going to do well, but I didn’t expect that,” said Longeretta. Schneider noted that it was helped by sheer dominance in the comedy guest actor category,...

‘The Pitt,’ ‘The Studio,’ and ‘Adolescence’ have taken the lead in this pivotal Emmy category
Image
When it comes to predicting the Emmys, there is one group of bellwether categories worth paying close attention to. Over the past decade, a notable trend has emerged: the winners for Best Drama Series and Best Drama Casting have mirrored each other seven times; Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Casting eight times; and Best Limited Series and Best Limited/Movie Casting nine times. That's a combined accuracy rate of 80 percent over the most recent 10-year period.

With that in mind, our gaze is fixed on the three casting races for the 2025 Emmys, where The Pitt, The Studio, and Adolescence are already making compelling cases as the early front-runners.

‘Squid Game’ and Diego Luna are the year’s biggest Emmy snubs: Poll
Image
Hell hath no fury like a TV fan scorned.

Following the announcement of the 2025 Emmy nominations, Gold Derby users were outraged that several top contenders failed to hear their names called. Nearly half of the people we polled said that Squid Game was the biggest snub, having received zero bids for Season 2 after winning six trophies for Season 1 in 2022.

Among the list of snubbed Squid Game actors: Lee Jung-jae, who won the last time he was eligible for playing Seong Gi-hun (Player 456); Choi Seung-hyun as the villainous Thanos (Player 230); Lee Byung-hun as the Front Man; Park Sung-hoon as trans contestant Cho Hyun-ju (Player 120); Kang Ae-shim as protective mother Jang Geum-ja (Player 149); Park Gyu-young as Kang No-eul, the North Korean defector who's now a pink-clad soldier; and Gong Yoo as the Recruiter on the outside.

Showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk was overlooked for producing, writing, and directing Season 2 — he received all three noms...

Image
Warner Bros. Discovery’s HBO Max was the most nominated platform at the 2025 Emmy Awards with 142 noms, paced by HBO’s limited series The Penguin (24), The White Lotus Season 3 (23) and The Last of Us Season 2 (16) as well as HBO Max originals Hacks Season 4 (14) and The Pitt Season 1 (13). This marks the most Emmy nominations for HBO in a single year, topping its previous high mark of 137 in 2019, before the launch of streamer HBO Max.

“Ultimately it’s a great validation of all the creative people that we work with,” said Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content. “The Emmys are not the reason why we do the shows we do, but it’s a nice recognition of the hard work that goes into each and every one of these shows.”

He gave shoutout to Wbd CEO David Zaslav who “has always been very, very supportive of everything we’re trying to do,...

HBO Max Boss Teases How ‘The White Lotus’ Creator's 'Survivor' Return Will Impact Season 4
Image
Don't be surprised if Season 4 of The White Lotus suddenly changes locations to Fiji. Even though the next season of the hit series is reportedly moving back to Europe, during a recent interview with Variety, HBO Max CEO and content chairman Casey Bloys revealed that series' creator Mike White's creative process is influenced by the places he visits — and currently the writer is filming the all-star 50th season of reality competition series Survivor in the South Pacific.

During the interview, Bloys commented that chances are that White is "observing his fellow contestants and taking notes and getting ideas" while he films Survivor's landmark season and that the great thing about the showrunner is that he "always has the show in his head worked out." So we already know which direction The White Lotus is taking on Season 4? Bloys elaborates:

"I have a sense of the ideas that he’s playing with,...

Image
The White Lotus has checked into the 2025 Emmys.

On Tuesday, the third season of the HBO series created by Mike White — who also directs, writes and executive produces the show — earned 23 Emmy nominations. It tied with Apple’s The Studio, which Seth Rogen co-created, co-wrote, directed and starred in. The noms fall just slightly behind HBO’s The Penguin, which scored 24, while Apple’s Severance picked up 27 nods, the highest amount for a show this year.

Season three of White Lotus, which centers around guests’ stay at a luxury resort, ran for seven weeks earlier this year, with the season finale airing on Sunday, April 6. This latest season starred Walton Goggins, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Aimee Lou Wood, Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, Jason Isaacs, Natasha Rothwell, Sam Nivola, Sarah Catherine Hook, Jon Gries and Sam Rockwell.

Goggins, Isaacs and Rockwell are nominated in the best supporting actor in a drama series category.

Carrie Coon surprised fellow The White Lotus season 3 stars were snubbed

When the 2025 Emmy nominations were announced on Tuesday, July 15, there was a lot to celebrate for HBO's critically acclaimed, fan-favorite anthology series The White Lotus. ‘The Last of Us’ earns 16 Emmy nominations — but has 3 shocking snubs
Image
Emmy voters are still infected with The Last of Us, rewarding the zombified series with 16 nominations on Tuesday, including Best Drama Series. Notably, Season 2 of HBO's adaptation of the popular video-game series didn't get everything for which it submitted, and there are three notable snubs that are causing an uproar on social media: supporting actress Isabela Merced, and the standout episode "Through The Valley" in both directing and writing.

Here are the categories The Last of Us got into — and missed.

Best Drama Series: Nominated

It was never a question whether the fungal apocalypse drama would receive a series bid, since Season 1 scored 24 nominations and won eight trophies in 2023. The Last of Us ended up placing fourth in Gold Derby's Best Drama Series predictions by the time the nominations were announced. It finds itself nominated alongside Andor, The Diplomat, Paradise, The Pitt, Severance, Slow Horses, and The White Lotus.

‘The Pitt’: Here are its 13 Emmy nominations — and 3 big snubs
Image
Emmy voters indeed fell into The Pitt. The HBO Max hit received 13 Emmy nominations on Tuesday, including Best Drama Series and Best Drama Actor for Noah Wyle.

Here are the categories the medical drama got into — and missed.

Best Drama Series: Nominated

The medical drama has been the breakout hit of the year since its January debut. It quickly shot up Gold Derby's Best Drama Series odds and was in second place by the time of nominations. It's nominated alongside Andor, The Diplomat, The Last of Us, Paradise, Severance, Slow Horses, and The White Lotus.

Best Drama Actor: Nominated

Wyle was the last one called alphabetically, but he's been first in the odds since May, a month after Season 1 ended and about six weeks after his tour-de-force performance in the 13th episode. This is Wyle's sixth Emmy nomination and first in 26 years. He was nominated in Best Drama Supporting Actor from 1994-99 for ER.

‘Squid Game’ skunked at the Emmys: Here are all the nominations it missed for Season 2 — including Lee Jung-jae and Choi Seung-hyun
Image
Sorry, Squid Game fans — it's game over at the Emmys.

According to Gold Derby’s odds, Netflix's most popular show was never expected to match the 14 Emmy nominations it earned in 2022, but nobody predicted Season 2 would get completely shut out. Just three years ago, Squid Game was nominated for Best Drama Series and brought home six awards: Best Actor for Lee Jung-jae, Best Directing, Best Drama Guest Actress for Lee Yoo-mi, Best Production Design (“Kkanbu”), Best Stunt Performance (“Stick to the Team”), and Best Visual Effects (“VIPs”). Three years later, Squid Game's second season continued to captivate audiences, logging over 192 million views on Netflix — but totally flopped with Emmy voters.

Here are the categories the second missed.

With eight slots available for Best Drama, Squid Game was barely holding onto the eighth position. While the second season wasn’t as critically acclaimed as the first...

Emmy Awards 2025 Nominees: ‘Severance’ Leads with 27 Nominations
Image
Adam Scott stars in ‘Severance’ season 2 (Photo Credit: Apple TV+)

The 77th Emmy Awards nominees are a mixture of familiar and new, with Severance‘s second season topping the list with 27 nominations. Newbie The Studio scored 23 nominations, tying The Bear for the most Emmy nominations for a comedy series in a single year.

The Penguin received 24 nominations, and The White Lotus picked up 23. The Last Of Us earned 16 nominations, followed by Andor and Hacks with 14 each. Adolescence, The Bear, and The Pitt each received 13.

“In a year when the industry has continued to evolve—creatively, structurally, and economically—one thing remains clear: powerful performances and compelling stories still cut through. Emmy voters took notice this year as more members voted in the competition than ever before,” stated Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego. “It’s a reminder of the impact incredible television and exceptional artists have on all of us. Emmy Nominations Analysis: ‘Severance’ and ‘The Studio’ Dominate, but Does That Make Them Frontrunners?
Image
“Severance” and “The Studio” got more Emmy nominations than anybody expected, “The White Lotus” didn’t receive quite as many acting noms as usual and fewer new shows made it into the top Emmy categories than at any time in the last five years.

Those were some of the lessons from Tuesday’s announcement of the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations, which were announced by Harvey Guillén and Brenda Song on Tuesday morning in North Hollywood. With the number of submissions declining for the second consecutive year, many major categories had fewer nominees than usual, but that didn’t stop voters from dropping in a handful of surprises and from showing just how much they loved the second season of “Severance,” the runaway leader in nominations with 27, three more than last year’s big winner, “Shōgun,” received on its way to breaking the Emmy record for wins in a single year.

All the snubs and surprises at the 2025 Emmy nominations
Image
'Tis the day of the Emmys and all through the house, surprises are stirring and snubs are inspiring grouse. While fans of Hacks, Severance, and The White Lotus had plenty to cheer about, Squid Game, The Handmaid's Tale and The Voice are among the high-profile shows that went overlooked by voters. On the other hand, Uzo Aduba and Colman Domingo pulled off surprise victories that the odds didn't see coming.

We rounded up this morning's biggest snubs and surprises from the 2025 Emmy nominations.

Snub: Selena Gomez and Steve Martin, Only Murders in the Building (Best Comedy Actress/Best Comedy Actor)

Looks like Martin Short will be representing the podcasting sleuths solo at this year's Emmys. Both of his Only Murders in the Building costars fell short in ultra-close battles for their respective categories. ‘The White Lotus’ scores 23 nominations, but there are lots of snubs
Image
It’s clear Emmy voters remain fans of the HBO drama, which saw another impressive showing in this year’s nominations. Eight of the show's stars received nominations as did creator Mike White.

Best Drama Series: Nominated

The HBO series, which swept 10 Emmys in its first season and picked up five more in Season 2, has once again been nominated for Best Drama Series. At the time of the nominations, it was ranked third on Gold Derby’s odds list, behind Severance and The Pitt. It will go up against Andor, The Diplomat, The Last of Us, Paradise, The Pitt, Severance and Slow Horses.

Best Drama Supporting Actor: Nominated

The show had nine contenders in the supporting actor category, but only three earned nominations: Walton Goggins as Rick, Jason Isaacs as Timothy Ratliff, and Sam Rockwell as Frank. These three consistently ranked among Gold Derby’s top five contenders, with Goggins leading the pack.

‘Severance’ dominates Emmy field: Here’s every category where it scored a nomination — and everywhere it was snubbed
Image
The innies and the outies will be partying at the Emmys.

Severance avoided the sophomore slump in a major way, riding its meme-tastic Season 2 to an Emmy-dominating 27 nominations on Tuesday, including a bid for Best Drama Series, and nine acting nods. Entering Emmy season as the show to beat, per the Gold Derby odds, the Apple TV+ series was widely expected not only to improve upon the 14 nominations it garnered in its first season but to challenge last year's nomination champ, Shōgun. In the end, Severance eclipsed the Japanese period drama by two nods and fell just short of Game of Thrones' all-time mark of 32.

Here's a look at every category where Severance scored — and everywhere it was snubbed.

This is the best Hulu comedy you’re probably not watching
Image
Strong female lead, killer writing, and one of the best casts of the year — this show deserves way more love.

There’s a ton of great comedy on Hulu right now — especially with all the buzzy ABC and Fxx shows it pulls in, like “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “Abbott Elementary.” But that also means it’s easy for a gem to get buried. I’ve been on the hunt for something to scratch that “Fleabag” itch ever since it ended… something smart, funny, emotionally sharp, and totally original. And I finally found it. “How to Die Alone” is that show. It’s hilarious. It’s honest. And it’s the best underrated comedy on Hulu right now.

‘Awards Magnet’ mailbag: A ‘Bear’ Emmy nominations tank? A cap on acting nominees?
Image
Will The Bear collapse in nominations? Should the Emmys cap acting nominees per show? Awards Magnet host Joyce Eng and Gold Derby senior editor Marcus James Dixon are here to answer your burning questions of the week.

Yes, the mailbag is back, and so are your hot takes. One lister is shooting their shot with a bold prediction that The Bear will plummet in nominations for Season 3, a year after it set a record for most nominations for a comedy series in a single year with 23. The show obviously won't get blanked completely, but which major category — categories? — might it miss? Perhaps the one it already lost last year to the reigning Best Comedy Series champ.

Meanwhile, another listener is "deathly afraid" of a complete takeover by The White Lotus in Best Drama Supporting Actress. At the moment, the HBO satire is "only" predicted to claim four of the seven...

Two new TV shows just cracked the HBO Max top 10 of all time -- but which ones?
Image
A gritty comic book spin-off and a high-stakes hospital drama shake up the all-time greats list.

HBO Max — and HBO before it — has pretty much always been the top of the food chain when it comes to TV. And now that the service is switching back to the HBO Max name, it’s a good reminder of just how much incredible stuff it’s put out over the years. Even with streaming more crowded than ever, HBO Max still manages to drop some of the most iconic series out there. Prestige dramas, dark comedies, twisty thrillers — whatever the genre, they’ve probably already nailed it. So whether you’re new to the platform or just looking to rewatch a classic, here are my picks for the 10 best shows ever on HBO Max.

Top 10 all-time TV shows streaming on Max:

No. 10: ‘The Last of Us’

No. 9: ‘The White Lotus’

Julianne Nicholson dances her way to the top of the Comedy Guest Actress Emmy predictions for ‘Hacks’
Image
Looks like Dance Mom will boogie all the way to the Emmy podium.

Julianne Nicholson, who played the joyous (and drug-addicted) character on Hacks Season 4, now leads the Best Comedy Guest Actress race, taking down longtime frontrunner Jamie Lee Curtis for The Bear, who won last year. Nicholson's Dance Mom, aka Mary Alice, was recruited by Paul W. Downs' Jimmy and Megan Stalter's Kayla to appear on Late Night With Deborah Vance as a way for the talk show-within-a-show to gain a younger audience. At first, Jean Smart's Deborah was hesitant to let the untested woman take the stage, until she realized it would annoy Hannah Einbinder's Ava, and then all bets were off.

There's a new Hacks tonight, but I have not yet recovered from Julianne Nicholson dancing to Katy Perry's "Lifetimes" as Dance Mom in last week's episode. pic.twitter.com/SH3OPittFI

‘The White Lotus’ Emmy predictions: Which nominations will the cast and crew get?
Image
The White Lotus cast may have better luck at the Emmys in Los Angeles than their on-screen counterparts did during their ill-fated Thai vacation. While tragedy shadowed the fictional guests at the resort, the series’ stellar Emmy track record hints at a much brighter fate this awards season.

If history is any indicator, The White Lotus is poised for another big night. The show’s first season swept 10 Emmys, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. Season 2 followed suit with five wins, among them Jennifer Coolidge’s win for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. In her now-iconic acceptance speech, Coolidge thanked creator Mike White, saying:

“Mike White, you have given me hope and changed my life in a million different ways. My neighbors are speaking to me. I mean it. I was never invited to one party on my hill and now everyone’s inviting me.”

Why Hulu Canceled How To Die Alone After One Season
Image
Airports always carry an air of possibility; everywhere you look, people are doing something new, visiting home, or embarking on a new chapter. Moments of transport in different entertainment mediums pack all that uncertainty into their gutters and move the viewer into a new headspace to consider what has been and what is to come. A show like "How to Die Alone" did double-duty in that regard, because Natasha Rothwell's Hulu series showed how much TV has grown in the last half-decade, and how far the medium still has to go. The streamer decided to cancel the series, citing low viewership, failing to recognize potential when it was staring them right in the face.

"How to Die Alone" is a comedy/drama starring Natasha Rothwell as Mel, an airport worker who's been in emotional limbo for some time and awakens to the possibility of her life being more than...
