Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. will make a surprising (and divisive) return to the MCU next year in Avengers: Doomsday. And while theories and speculation continue to run rife regarding why Doom has Tony Stark’s face, the actor has now taken to social media to suggest that the events of Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will see him play not just Doom, but Iron Man as well.
Sharing a short clip on Instagram, Downey Jr. revealed that he has been reading both "Secret Wars," which sees a mysterious and powerful entity known as The Beyonder bringing together the Marvel Universe's greatest villains and heroes and setting them against one another. But it’s his other reading material that has fans’ heads spinning, with the actor showing off "Iron Man: Legacy of Doom," which finds Iron Man and Doctor Doom teaming up (sort of) before the latter betrays the...

Rebecca Romijn, returning as Mystique in next year’s Avengers: Doomsday, suggests that the script isn’t “finished”, despite filming being underway.
Shooting began on Marvel’s expansive, majorly expensive Avengers: Doomsday in April this year, with directors Anthony and Joe Russo rushing to get the film ready for a December 2026 release date. The production’s a good few weeks into its production, then, but according to one prominent member of its huge ensemble, the script is still being written as cameras roll.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at Comic Con (via Collider), actor Rebecca Romijn was there to promote Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. When asked about her role in Avengers: Doomsday, however, Romijn, who’s reprising her turn as Mystique from the X-Men movies, expressed uncertainty.

Returning X-Men Star Reveals They Still Filming Avengers: Doomsday Because The Script Isn't Finished
Original X-Men Mystique actor Rebecca Romjin confirms Avengers: Doomsday's script is still being written on set. Avengers: Doomsday's December 2026 release date gives Marvel a year and a half to complete the movie. However, its scope is so large that the studio needs to remain in full gear to meet the deadline.
Speaking to THR, Mystique star Rebecca Romjin reveals that she doesn't know whether she has finished filming her Avengers: Doomsday scenes, as the script is still unfinished even though the movie is already deep into production. According to Romjin, little plot information is known by the actors themselves, as Marvel "[keeps] everything under wraps.” Read Romjin's full quote below:
“[I’m] not quite sure (...) The script hasn’t — they haven’t finished writing it. It’s been very, very fun, and we don’t know yet. They keep everything very close to the vest themselves in an effort to keep everything under wraps.

While Marvel Studios usually starts filming with a complete script, it's never considered the 'final' or 'final draft' of the script.
According to studio president Kevin Feige, their creative process involves constant tweaking and improvements, which he calls "plussing, "throughout filming.
That flexible, collaborative approach to filmmaking is part of what made the original Iron Man such a hit in 2008, and Marvel has continued to embrace that style, hoping to recreate lightning in a bottle.
Avengers: Doomsday looks to be no different as Mystique actress Rebecca Romijn has shared that she doesn't know if she's done filming as the script isn't finished being "plussed."

Chris Hemsworth’s role in Avengers: Doomsday could be bigger than fans expected. According to Matt Belloni from The Town podcast, Hemsworth might actually be the second lead in the movie.
During a recent episode, Belloni talked to Wall Street Journal reporter Ben Fritz, and while discussing the MCU, he mentioned, “He’s got a major role.” He was talking about Hemsworth’s Thor.
Nothing’s confirmed yet, but this lines up with other things we’ve been hearing. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently made comments that seem to support the idea.
At a press event for Fantastic Four: First Steps, Feige talked about the future of long-running characters like Thor. He said, “Where we have great actors playing great characters, I think it would be fun to see them in multiple places.”

It looks like Thor might be getting more spotlight in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. According to industry insider Matt Belloni, Chris Hemsworth could be the second lead in the next Avengers movie.
On a recent episode of The Town podcast, Belloni talked to Wall Street Journal entertainment journalist Ben Fritz, and during their chat, the topic of the MCU came up.
Belloni said, “He’s got a major role.” He was referring to Hemsworth, suggesting the God of Thunder won’t just be part of the massive ensemble; he might be right up front with a leading role.
Marvel hasn’t officially confirmed this yet, but it doesn’t sound far off. Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, made some comments recently at the Fantastic Four: First Steps press event that might back it up.

Alan Cumming might’ve gotten a little too comfortable as the guest host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! recently. During an episode featuring the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the actor brought up the usual Marvel secrecy topic, asking his guests how hard it’s been to avoid leaking spoilers.
But things got awkward, and funny, when Pedro Pascal, who plays Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, quickly turned the question back on Cumming.
“It’s funny that you should ask,” Pascal said with a grin. “The biggest leak that we’ve had comes from our host.”
He was, of course, referring to Cumming’s accidental slip back in May. That’s when Cumming hinted at a major fight between his character, Nightcrawler, and Pascal’s Mister Fantastic in Avengers: Doomsday. At the time, the reveal set off waves of fan speculation, and apparently also earned Cumming a stern phone call.

Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps made an appearance, and Alan Cumming was the guest host. During the show, Cumming asked stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach about how hard it’s been to keep Marvel secrets.
Pascal, who stars in The Mandalorian, joked right back at Cumming, reminding him about the time he accidentally spoiled a big fight scene in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie.
“It’s funny that you should ask,” Pascal said with a grin. “The biggest leak that we’ve had comes from our host.”
Cumming had previously hinted at a fight between his character Nightcrawler and Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic, in Avengers: Doomsday, which caused a bit of a stir among Marvel fans. When asked if he got in trouble for the spoiler, Cumming laughed and admitted, “My publicist called me.

One of Avengers: Doomsday's writers comments on working on different iterations of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. Originally, the McU's next Avengers movie would have focused on Jonathan Majors' Kang the Conqueror and/or the multiversal Council of Kangs, which also featured Kang variants played by the actor. However, after Marvel fired Majors, the movie was completely overhauled.
Kang and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty are now gone, with Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom leading Avengers: Doomsday's expansive cast. In 2023, original writer Jeff Loveness was replaced by Loki creator Michael Waldron, who was already set to pen the Multiverse Saga's finale, Avengers: Secret Wars. It seemed like Waldron had since left for Stephen McFeely to take over, but he remains.
Speaking with ScreenRant'sown Liam Crowley at the 2025 Disney Upfronts in May, Michael Waldron revealed that he is still attached to Avengers: Doomsday and commented on how filming is shaping up so far.

After 37 movies, billions at the box office, and more than a few pop culture juggernauts, you’d think Kevin Feige might take a victory lap. But according to the Marvel Studios president himself, there’s no such thing as “done” when it comes to the MCU — and certainly no such thing as “perfect.”
“I’ve never been satisfied with a movie we’ve released,” Feige revealed during a candid roundtable with press, ahead of Fantastic Four: First Steps and Avengers: Doomsday. That comment came in response to a discussion about Marvel’s famously fluid production process, in which scripts are often reworked — sometimes heavily — even during filming and post-production. Critics have often pointed to this “Marvel method” as chaotic, but Feige sees it as essential.
“What we like to do is ‘plus-ing’ at every turn. There’s plus-ing happening every day on the Avengers: Doomsday set right now, and it...

Marvel Studios is skipping this year's San Diego Comic-Con, but studio President Kevin Feige sat down with the trades on Friday to reveal where things stand with the MCU before Phase Six begins with The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
For starters, Feige has confirmed that, in the post-Avengers: Secret Wars MCU, the X-Men will be recast for the upcoming reboot. However, it sounds like the fresh start afforded by the events of the 2027 movie will also extend to the wider franchise.
"We’re utilizing that [story] not just to round out the stories we’ve been telling post-'Endgame,' just as importantly — and you can look at the at the 'Secret Wars' comics for where that takes you — it very, very much sets us up for the future," Feige said of the Multiverse Saga's conclusion. Rebecca Romijn is officially back as Mystique after more than a decade away from the role. The last time fans saw her playing the famous blue mutant was in 2011’s X-Men: First Class, and even then, it was just a quick cameo without her name in the credits.
But now, she’s returning for Avengers: Doomsday, alongside some of her old X-Men co-stars like Allan Cumming, James Marsden, Sir Ian McKellen, and Sir Patrick Stewart.
Talking to Et recently, Romijn opened up about what it’s like stepping back into Mystique’s blue skin. When asked how it feels to return after so long, she said it’s been a really positive experience. “It’s been incredibly fun, very surreal and wonderful to be with my old cast as well as new cast.”
But it’s not all easy. Romijn explained that transforming into Mystique still takes a lot of time in the makeup chair.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps' script has a confirmed Loki connection, and it's exciting. Directed by WandaVision's Matt Shakman, the upcoming Marvel Studios movie is set to open Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), leading up to the events of the massive crossover event: Avengers: Doomsday. While it is set on a different Earth (which explains why they didn't help in the fight against Thanos), Marvel's First Family is confirmed to play key roles in the upcoming conflict against Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom, meaning that the movie could explore tie-ins to the Multiverse Saga similar to how Deadpool & Wolverine used the Time Variance Authority (Tva) in its overall story.

There’s been a lot of buzz lately about Avengers: Secret Wars, and now fans are wondering if we might see the Wasp team up with Wolverine in the movie. It all started when Evangeline Lilly, who plays Hope van Dyne in the MCU, shared a sweet post about her time at Supanova Comic Con & Gaming.
In the post, she included a photo of herself standing next to someone dressed as Wolverine. The cosplay was solid, but what got fans talking was what happened in the comments.

Marvel Studios has two massive Avengers movies on the way, Doomsday and Secret Wars. While the cast for Doomsday is mostly set, Secret Wars remains a mystery, and no one really knows what kind of Multiversal chaos it will bring.
Loud rumors suggest that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will appear in the film, which honestly wouldn’t be a shock. Several major stars from Fox’s X-Men franchise are already set to return for Doomsday, including Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, and Allan Cumming.
Recently, Evangeline Lilly, the MCU’s Hope van Dyne, also known as the Wasp, shared a heartfelt post praising the team behind Supanova Comic Con & Gaming. She included a photo of herself with a Wolverine cosplayer, and to be honest, it’s a pretty solid cosplay. But what caught fans’ attention was that she may have dropped a small hint about a possible team-up with Wolverine.

Glen Powell turns “extremely ugly” for his upcoming comedy series, Chad Powers. The teaser for Powell’s forthcoming project is out, and it shows the American actor, otherwise known for his good looks and charming personality, donning a fake moustache, curly wigs, and bulky prosthetics to go undercover and join a new football team.
Inspired by Eli Manning’s viral alter ego, the series revolves around Russ Holliday (Glen Powell), a failed college football quarterback who goes ‘disguise mode’ to restart his football career. Going incognito for career, comedy, and witty…very Hannah Montana-ish. Looks like Powell’s coming series is that kind of comedy, Miley Cyrus might want to distance herself from.

Glen Powell is taking on what might be his most challenging performance yet in Chad Powers: playing an “extremely ugly” person.
In Hulu‘s first teaser for the upcoming comedy series, the first two episodes premiering Sept. 30 on the streaming platform, the Golden Globe nominee plays hotshot quarterback Russ Holliday, who disguises himself as the titular football player to join a new team after tanking his own college career.
Debuting during game four of the NBA Finals, the teaser sees Russ getting dragged on social media after dropping the ball during a crucial play.
“Everyone says I’m done with football,” he says in the teaser. “There’s no such thing as bad press.”
Getting fitted for a wig and a prosthetic nose, Powell’s leading jock proclaims, “If I can’t play as Russ, I’ll play as someone else.”

Glen Powell is well known for starring alongside Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick -- but the actor has another popular aviation movie on his resume that has found renewed success thanks to streaming. The Powell-led biographical war drama Devotion has become a surprise hit on free streaming service Tubi.
Collider reports that Devotion --which premiered via Tubi on May 1 -- ranks 9th on the streamer's top 10 movies chart. It's the second time in 2025 that Devotion has become a top 10 streaming hit, after the movie also topped the Max charts in several countries during February.
Devotion chronicled the story of Ensign Jesse L. Brown (played by fired MCU actor Jonathan Majors), who became the first Black aviator in U.S. Navy history. The film also detailed Brown's enduring friendship with fellow pilot Lieutenant Junior Grade Tom Hudner (played by Powell). Brown and Hudner put everything on the line during...

It’s no secret that the linear TV industry has been in a state of contraction. But during a time when shows often have a lifespan of one to four seasons, there’s been one behemoth quietly holding down the fort: adult animation.
“The Simpsons” and “South Park” have always been giants. But in recent years, the subgenre of animated half-hour programs aimed at adults has truly exploded. Demand for titles like “Rick and Morty” increased 152% between January 2020 and October 2023, according to Parrot Analytics. This was partially due to the Covid pandemic, but that fandom has continued, not just in terms of viewership but merchandising revenue, convention panels and a vibrant online community around most titles.
And this isn’t just a niche fandom. Two of Fox’s “Animation Domination” darlings — “Family Guy” and “Bob’s Burgers” — ended 2024 as the No. 3 and No. 4 most-streamed TV shows, respectively. During that year, “Family Guy” secured 42.4 billion viewing minutes,...

As Avengers: Doomsday looms, Marvel Cinematic Universe enthusiasts keep imagining various potential showdowns in the anticipated superhero blockbuster, mostly involving Robert Downey Jr.'s big bad, Doctor Doom. New fan art from the Avengers sequel teases a potential faceoff between Victor von Doom and a fellow villain that could answer a longstanding question of strength.

There was a time when it was widely reported that Tom Holland's Spider-Man would be Avengers: The Kang Dynasty's lead. A lot has changed since then, with Jeff Loveness and Michael Waldron's script thrown out in preference for Stephen McFeely's Avengers: Doomsday (which will be directed by the Russo Brothers).
Part of Marvel Studios' deal with Sony Pictures is that Spider-Man can appear in the Avengers movies, but somewhat complicating matters is the fact that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is being released between Doomsday and Secret Wars.
The wall-crawler's solo adventure could take place before Doomsday, but if that is the plan, then it would likely be better for Spidey to sit out the next Avengers movie to avoid confusing audiences. We're sure Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield will reunite in Secret Wars, but if Brand New Day is a Multiversal tale, then it could happen even sooner.

The release date for Glen Powell's new Hulu sports comedy series has been revealed. Though best known for playing Lt. Jake 'Hangman' Seresin opposite Tom Cruise in the 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick and starring alongside Sydney Sweeney in the romantic comedy Anyone But You, Powell has a connection to sports that goes beyond acting, having been a multi-sport athlete and an all-state lacrosse player while attending Westwood High School in Austin, Texas.
As a versatile actor, comedy also has a special place in Powell's acting career, having starred in more than a handful of movies in the genre. After playing the charming but vulnerable Ben in Anyone But You alongside Sweeney, the actor then starred in the dark comedy Hit Man, where he played a college professor who went undercover as a mole.

Wilson stars as Pryce Cahill, an over-the-hill, ex-pro golfer whose career was derailed 20 years ago amid a scandal. Yet Pryce finds a career resurgence thanks to scouting (and coaching and caddying for) a 17-year-old golf phenom (Peter Dager). The duo might be an unlikely pair on the green, but will this save Pryce both personally and professionally?
The official synopsis reads: “After the collapse of his marriage and getting fired from his job at an Indiana sporting goods store, Pryce hedges his bets, and future, entirely on a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom named Santi (Dager).” The series is billed as being a “heartfelt, feel-good sports comedy about a found family and their relationships set within the world of golf as it has never been shown before.

Recently, Marvel Studios hasn’t been as busy as usual when announcing new projects. That’s why there are only four MCU movies with confirmed release dates at the moment. Still, there are plenty of announced TV shows and MCU movies that have not yet set release dates. So, with that said, let’s look at all of the upcoming Marvel movies and shows that will be released (soon).
Editor’s Note: This list was updated in May 2025, after the release of Thunderbolts* and reflects the most recent changes.

Marvel Studios has always made sure that everything related to its new projects remains under wraps. But according to the cast of Thunderbolts*, the secrecy surrounding Avengers: Doomsday is next level.
Speaking to GamesRadar+, David Harbour and Wyatt Russell, who have both been confirmed to reprise their respective roles as Red Guardian and US Agent in Doomsday, said they have no idea if the other has been on set yet. "We can't even tell each other," Harbour explained, when asked he had been to the filming location yet. "We're sussing each other out."
When asked if there was anyone in particular they are looking forward to working with, Harbour was a little more forthcoming. "There's a guy called Robert Downey Jr., " he said, careful not to share any information that is not already in the public domain. "Excited to get in a scene with him... I mean, I was as...

Stephen Amell has gone from being a TV guest star to the lead of three massive TV shows. While he got his big breakthrough in the CW’s Arrow, he currently plays the lead in NBC’s Suits L.A., and also headlined the canceled Starz series Heels. The latter has received incredible reviews but was still canceled prematurely in season 2.
As rumors of a potential season 3 making the rounds after Starz licensed the show to Netflix, Amell’s love for Heels has never been hidden. The actor compared the show, which centered around professional wrestling (something in which he has a lot of experience), to his breakthrough Arrow, and his explanation actually makes sense.

Thor star Chris Hemsworth is back in action, with the actor and MCU staple sharing an intense video of him back in training in preparation to once again don the armor and red cape of the “Strongest Avenger” as he returns for Avengers: Doomsday. Hemsworth took to social media to share footage of his workout, which sees him beating seven bells out of a punch bag, with the footage being joined by the caption, “A little Avengers pre game warm up, coming in hot.”
Throwing a series of punches and knees, Hemsworth is once again in superhero shape as he prepares to take on his former ally, Robert Downey Jr., who will switch sides in the Avengers sequel and bring the villainous Doctor Doom to life. Based on this training footage, Doom could be in for a bad time when he comes face-to-face with Hemsworth’s Asgardian Avenger.

Ever since the first Iron Man film back in 2008, it's nothing new for a Marvel Studios film to not have a finalized script or for things to radically change while on set.
As such, MCU fans shouldn't really be alarmed by reports that the current script for Avengers: Doomsday isn't finalized yet, despite the fact that the Russos having revealed that filming kicks off today.
But apparently, there's a very special reason why the script isn't finalized, according to recent reports.
It's because Marvel Studios hasn't signed all of the actors yet that it wants to appear in the film.
Yep. This is what @TheInSneider has been reporting for Weeks on The Hot Mic and in his newsletter.
The #AvengersDoomsday script ain't Done done because they haven't closed all the deals with all the people who'll be appearing in it.
An interesting way to make a movie... https://t.co/3JZaNIl27g pic.

When Marvel Studios introduced Kang (a.k.a. He Who Remains) in Loki, it felt like the MCU was about to get an even greater big bad than Thanos.
However, the studio made a major misstep by adding his most well-known Variant, Kang the Conqueror, to Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. In the movie, the Kang we expected to be the Multiverse Saga's endgame was soundly beaten by the title heroes. Then, to make matters worse, rising star Jonathan Majors was dropped from the role after a well-publicised domestic abuse trial.
Marvel Studios has since decided to move on from Kang and will instead focus on Doctor Doom in the next Avengers movies. Since The Kang Dynasty (now titled Doomsday) was first announced, for a May 1, 2026 release, a surprising amount has been revealed about what it would have looked like.
