Netflix’s $1B Mexican drive is taking shape with cameras rolling on four new series starring the likes of Gael García Bernal and Paulina Dávila. Meanwhile, another new show out of Mexico, Mal de Amores (Lovesick), the adaptation of Ángeles Mastretta’s novel, has wrapped.

Netflix boss Ted Sarandos said in Feb. that the streamer will splash $1B on Mexican originals over the next four years. The quartet of new series includes Santita starring Garcia Bernal and Dávila. Netflix has unveiled the start of production on four new series in Mexico, including one starring Gael García Bernal, reflecting the global streaming giant’s commitment “to continue bringing Mexican stories created by local creators to the screen.”

Following February’s news of a $1 billion investment in local production by Netflix, directors and showrunners presented the new shows in the streamer’s Mexican office. They are Santita, Love 9 to 5 (Amor de oficina), I’m Not Afraid (No tengo miedo), and Corruptors (Los corruptores).

Netflix also confirmed the end of production of Lovesick (Mal de amores), an adaptation of the novel written by Ángeles Mastretta and directed by her daughter, Catalina Aguilar Mastretta.

The new series add to Mexican series that Netflix previously announced it would release this year, namely Snakes and Ladders, The Dead Girls, How to Win the Lottery, The Gringo Hunters, Unspeakable Sins, and No One Saw Us Leave.

Netflix has unveiled four new series currently filming in Mexico as part of the streamer’s $1 billion investment in film and TV production in the country.

Production is officially underway on “Santita,” which hails from director Rodrigo García and stars Gael García Bernal, Carolina Rivera’s “Amor de oficina,” “I’m not afraid” (“No tengo miedo”), which is based on Niccolò Ammaniti’s Italian novel, and “Corruptors” (“Los corruptores”) based on the novel of the same name by Jorge Zepeda Patterson, Netflix announced Tuesday.

Additionally, the streamer wrapped filming on “Lovesick” (“Mal de amores”), the adaptation of Ángeles Mastretta’s novel, which is directed by her daughter, Catalina Aguilar Mastretta.

Exclusive: Production has begun on the new Netflix series The Gringo Hunters in Mexico City and the core cast has been revealed. They include José María Yazpik, Sebastian Roché, Harold Torres and Mayra Hermosillo. Plans to shoot in Tijuana are also in place.

Torres and Hermosillo are part of the gringo hunters’ core group alongside Manuel Masalva, Andrew Leland Rogers, Héctor Kotsifakis, Dagoberto Gama and Regina Nava. Blanco burst onto the pop culture scene after her exploits were highlighted in the 2006 documentary Cocaine Cowboys and its sequel two years later from Billy Corben. She was portrayed by Catherine Zeta-Jones in the Lifetime biopic Cocaine Godmother in 2018.

Exclusive: Ana de la Reguera‘s eponymous series based on her life for Pantaya in collaboration with Amazon Prime Video has been renewed for seasons 2 and 3.

Ana—produced by Vis, a division of ViacomCBS— is a bilingual comedy created, produced, written, and starring de la Reguera about an aging actress trying to find her place in the world and in Hollywood as she nears her 40s.

“I am really happy to continue sharing this story and that the audience has received it as we expected,” de la Reguera said in a statement. “The next two seasons will be a lot of fun! The titles include Killing Eve created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) and starring Sandra Oh and Fiona Shaw, and Aquí En La Terra, created by Gael García Bernal with Kyzza Terrazas and Jorge Dorantes.

The titles were selected by Canneseries artistic director Albin Lewi.

The festival was founded by David Lisnard, mayor of Cannes and presided by former French culture minister Fleur Pellerin. It will run alongside Miptv.

Many filmmakers got their start on the independent film circuit.

So who will follow the greats such as Christopher Nolan (“The Dark Knight Rises”), Oren Peli (“Paranormal Activity”), Marc Forster (“World War Z”) and Jared Hess (“Napoleon Dynamite”)?

Top brass at the upcoming 20th Slamdance Film Festival have revealed their narrative feature and documentary line-up, one day before the first programme announcements are due from Park City neighbour Sundance.

There are 10 narrative and eight documentary films including 11 world premieres, four North American and one Us.

Festival organisers sorted through more than 5,000 submissions to find the 18 titles, all of which are feature directorial debuts budgeted at under $1m and without Us distribution.

Jury awards are presented to feature films in both categories and all films are eligible for the Spirit Of Slamdance Award judged by the film-makers themselves. The festival also presents Audience Awards.

“The 2014 Feature Competition bristles with raw talent and innovative filmmaking,” said Slamdance president and co-founder Peter Baxter. “As an organisation run by film-makers for film-makers, we couldn’t imagine a truer way of representing the first 20 years and beginning our next.”
