Fox’s Future: Here Are Four Different Ways The Network Might Survive or Disappear If the Murdochs Sell to Disney
In the mid-1980s, Rupert Murdoch had just purchased 20th Century Fox and Metromedia’s TV stations in the top U.S. markets, giving him the means to launch a fourth broadcast network. He strung together a patchwork of low-rated Uhf affiliates across the rest of the country, and the Fox network launched in 1986 with “The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers.”

Scripted fare followed, including “Married with Children” and “The Tracey Ullman Show” (which, of course, would beget the still-running “The Simpsons”). But much of the industry guffawed: NBC boss Brandon Tartikoff even dubbed it the “coat hanger network.” Early ratings were slow, and affiliates threatened to revolt (indeed, some dropped out).

But Fox eventually found a lifeline in 1994, when it nabbed NFL broadcast rights. From there, it upgraded affiliates and graduated into a seven-night-a-week programmer boasting a younger, more desirable demographic for advertisers. By the 2000s, “American Idol” made Fox the No.

Marvel's Iron Fist: trailer analysis
Jim Dandy Oct 10, 2016

Our Us chums took a frame-by-frame look at Marvel's Iron Fist trailer and found all kinds of cool bits and pieces...

As is their annual tradition, Marvel dropped a trailer for their next Netflix series at New York Comic Con. This year, it's Iron Fist, a story about an orphan trained in martial arts in a hidden city who returns to fight crime in New York City and be besties with Luke Cage.

Watch it here in case you missed it...

Video of Marvel's Iron Fist | Nycc Teaser Trailer [HD] | Netflix

As is the case with all of these trailers, this one was outstanding, and we dug through it and found some cool surprises. Let's go to the tape:

The trailer opens with a shot of Danny meditating in his fancy apartment, presumably in the penthouse of Rand Tower. If I recall correctly, it's supposed to be somewhere on 57th street,...

Insights: The History Of TV And The Future Of Digital Media
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” wrote George Santayana. And yet digital media’s headlong boom suggests that too few are paying attention to the hard-won experiences that built the behemoth known as TV, even as the newcomers try to replace it.

My look back, and forward, this week was occasioned by the arrival of Seth Shapiro’s first volume of his ambitious history, Television: Innovation, Disruption and the World’s Most Powerful Medium. Volume 1 is focused on the creation of the broadcast network industry. In it are plenty of seeds worth planting in any entrepreneur’s head as this new medium develops.

I’ve known Seth quite a while. A digital media consultant with two Emmys, he’s a member of the TV Academy Board of Governors and has long been active on the academy’s Interactive Media Peer Group. He’s had a...

Rock Band Rivals Hands-On Preview
Harmonix dropped an interesting tidbit of news for Rock Band 4 at E3 last month with the announcement of Rock Band Rivals, the first full-fledged expansion pack for the latest in their iconic rhythm game series. Unfortunately, they didn’t provide details beyond pricing and a revamped guitar controller, with employees later saying they’d ultimately chosen to pull back the curtain after a little more development time.

This is exactly what happened last week, when Harmonix provided me and several others with a presentation in New York City, giving us some hands-on time with Rock Band Rivals. Based on what I saw and played, Rivals looks to give the presentation of the series a real shot in the arm with one of its two new primary modes, and should also increase the game’s longevity with the other one.

The presentation was headed by Harmonix’s Daniel Sussman, who served...

Soundtrack For 'The Giver' Features OneRepublic, Jake Bugg & More Plus Clip And More Promos
“Harry Potter,” “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games.” These franchises make up the Mount Rushmore of Ya adaptations and studios are falling over themselves to pick up the rights to any Ya novel they can get their hands on. It’s therefore surprising that it’s taken this long for Lois Lowry’s “The Giver” to finally get the big screen treatment, so The Weinstein Company is making up time by putting the marketing machine into overdrive ahead of the film adaptation’s release next month. The “Harry Potter” series notwithstanding, every Ya franchise worth its salt has a curated soundtrack meant to whip the kids into an iTunes buying frenzy, and “The Giver” is no different. Set for release on August 5th, the soundtrack, The Giver: Music Collection, will span 10 songs with offerings from Capital Cities, Jake Bugg, Aloe Blacc and OneRepublic, which is the band behind the soundtrack’s first single.

Coldplay Teases New Album 'Ghost Stories' At iTunes Festival
Coldplay kicked off the iTunes Festival at SXSW on Tuesday, March 11, performing an hour-long set mixing old hits with brand new songs from their new album Ghost Stories.

“We’ve been away a long time, and I can’t think of a better place to come back into the world,” frontman Chris Martin told the crowd before launching into their first song.

Ha Ji-Won, Park Joong-hoon, Sul Kyung-gu, and Uhm Junghwa in Tidal Wave (2009)
Other than inadvertently scaring small children, Sebu Simonian, one-half of Capital Cities, feels the duo’s career is going pretty well. He and partner Ryan Merchant certainly can’t complain about lack of radio play. The pair’s breakthrough hit, “Safe and Sound” has been all over the radio this past year, topping Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart, and crossing over to the Top 5 of the Pop, Hot AC, Triple A and Modern Rock charts. The global hit has sold more than 2.5 million copies in the U.S. alone. Not bad for a song the duo recorded in 2011 that took its time catching on with the public. When Simonian hears the optimistic (despite the odds) song on the radio, “I grin and I’m always grateful when I hear it. It makes me realize the song is still relevant and I also hope that most people aren’t getting sick of it…...

Headlining the 13th annual Bonnaroo will be Elton John, Kanye West, Jack White, Lionel Richie, Vampire Weekend, The Avett Brothers, Phoenix, Skrillex, Arctic Monkeys, Frank Ocean and The Flaming Lips.

Also heading to the Great Stage Park this summer will be Neutral Milk Hotel, Wiz Khalifa, Cut Copy, The Head and the Heart, Lauryn Hill, Broken Bells, Ice Cube, Slightly Stoopid, Fitz and The Tantrums, Cake, Janelle Monae, Amos Lee and John Butler Trio.

West was a surprise choice for the festival, which hasn’t had the rapper in their lineup since 2008 when he walked onto the stage nearly two hours after his scheduled set time. Though he tried to blame Pearl Jam’s extended set, the crowd united in booing him.
