Kelsea Ballerini Wants To Win ‘The Voice’, But She Knows It’s Really About The “Moments” – Contenders TV: Documentary, Unscripted & Variety
Image
Last year, Michael Bublé became only the fourth new coach on The Voice to have a winning artist in his debut season.

Bublé coached Sofronio Vasquez, who won Season 26, putting him up there with Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Niall Horan, who also coached winners after immediately joining the NBC singing competition.

Kelsea Ballerini, who joined the show in Season 27, wants to replicate Bublé’s success this season but is aware that what’s really important for artists on the show is having a “moment.”

“I am competitive. I think when I first started, like during the blind [auditions], I was very I really wanted to win,” the pop star said during a panel conversation at Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary, Unscripted & Variety event.

“That shifted now that we’re deeper into the season, and just having conversations off camera, either with [showrunner and executive producer] Audrey [Morrissey] and the producers or the other coaches,...

Kimberly Perry on The Band Perry’s Breakup: ‘Did We Leave or Were We Kicked Out?’
Image
In October of 2020, The Band Perry — siblings Kimberly, Reid, and Neil — headed down to Dallas, Texas, to try and give their recording days as family trio one last shot. Unmoored during Covid lockdown and slowly finding their way back to Tennessee from their shared Sherman Oaks, California, house, they made a series of demos with Paul Cauthen’s producing team that never saw the light of day. Kimberly Perry was a fan of Cauthen’s 41 Project, especially his “Cocaine Country Dancing,” and thought the feel might suit them and their Southern gothic inclinations.

Morgan Wallen Says It’s ‘Mind-Blowing’ He Now Gets To Work With Artists Like Eric Church And Miranda Lambert

Morgan Wallen can’t believe he gets to work with country singers like Miranda Lambert and Eric Church.

The musician chats to Et Canada’s Carlos Bustamante about his new album One Thing At A Time, sharing of whether he can just call someone like Lambert up: “Now I can!”

The pair worked together with Nicolle Galyon on the track “Thought You Should Know”.

Wallen recalls, “At that point actually, that was the first time I’d written with Miranda. I had the idea for the song and I came in with a verse and chorus, I think. I was originally going to write with Nicolle Galyon that day, because I wanted a woman’s perspective for that song.

“Nicole was like, ‘Do you care if Miranda comes and writes?’ [I was like] no of course not, that would be awesome,” he continues, insisting that working with “two of the best female writers...

Nicolle Galyon, Nashville’s Most Vulnerable Songwriter, Has Advice for You: ‘Have Fun and Give Less of a Shit’
Image
Nicolle Galyon has ordered dinner out almost every night this week. This would not normally be a very notable occurrence for a busy songwriter, business owner, and now solo artist, but there’s a line on the opening track of Firstborn, Galyon’s debut record, that is haunting her a little.

“I sing ‘a high five for the girl making dinner,’ but I have Postmated the past five nights,” Galyon says, sitting cross-legged on a couch in her living room in jeans and a white t-shirt, her hair tucked under a tan baseball cap.

Blake Shelton Says He’s Rich on Love in New Song ‘Minimum Wage’
Image
On Thursday, President-elect Joe Biden outlined a stimulus plan that included, among other things, increasing the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour. Later the same night, Blake Shelton’s auspiciously titled new song “Minimum Wage” was released to the public — not surprisingly, it doesn’t attempt to unpack the vital issue of income inequality in America.

Instead, it’s a story about love, not working-class wages. Written by Nicolle Galyon, Corey Crowder, and Jesse Frasure, “Minimum Wage” is Shelton’s first new music of 2021. Borrowing a little of its verse...

Singer-songwriter Hailey Whitters has teamed up with country vocal quartet Little Big Town for the new single and video “Fillin’ My Cup,” the first new music Whitters has released since her 2020 album The Dream.

A fiddle-driven country-rocker with ringing electric guitars and beefy drums, “Fillin’ My Cup” was written by Whitters with Nicolle Galyon and Hillary Lindsey. It’s another tune full of quirky philosophical observations in the vein of her previous standout releases “The Days” and “Janice at the Hotel Bar.” In this case, Whitters gets the sublime harmony...

Dierks Bentley Plays Dwight Schrute, MacGyver in Goofy New ‘Gone’ Video
Image
There are guys in country music who struggle to be funny, and then there’s Dierks Bentley. In his new video for “Gone,” the singer earns easygoing, natural laughs by gamely casting himself as doomed TV characters. He’s a Game of Thrones knight incinerated by a dragon, a MacGyver hero who snips the wrong time-bomb wire, and a Fabio pitchman blinded by perfume. He even does his best Dwight Schrute in an homage to The Office.

The clip also puts Bentley in his element: onstage with his band at his Nashville honky-tonk Whiskey Row.

Hear Miranda Lambert’s New Song ‘Champion’ From ‘Make It Up As We Go’ Podcast
Image
Miranda Lambert has released the new song “Champion,” recorded for the scripted country-music podcast Make It Up As We Go. The song appeared in the series finale, which premiered on Thursday.

Written by Nicolle Galyon, Jared Gutstadt, Scarlett Burke, and Jeff Peters, “Champion” is a stripped-down ode to experiencing heartbreak and finding resilience to push through. “I’d do it all again, everything I had to lose to win,” Lambert sings in the chorus. It mirrors the journey of the young songwriter played by Burke in Make It Up As We Go,...

Dierks Bentley ghosts his boss, friends, and family as he tries to forget the lover who left him in the new song “Gone.” It’s the first new music from the county singer since his 2018 album The Mountain.

Written by Nicolle Galyon, Ben Johnson, and the solo artist Niko Moon, “Gone” finds Bentley living the hermit life, holed up on the couch watching TV and wondering what went wrong with his romance. Clothes are on the floor, dishes are in the sink, and his truck is full of gas, undriven...

Hailey Whitters Signs a Record Deal — On Her Own Terms
Image
The dog and pony show just wasn’t doing it for Hailey Whitters.

After her self-released, heartbreaking ode to the cruel realities of the Nashville music business, “Ten Year Town,” took off while she was waiting tables, Whitters found herself doing the usual rounds to major labels — singing a few songs, going through the motions, hearing the excuses for why they wouldn’t be able to sign her after all. She’d dress up just to get let down, and, 12 years into a 10-year town, the experience was still living...

Kelsea Ballerini Performs a Vulnerable ‘La’ on ‘Kimmel’
Kelsea Ballerini
Kelsea Ballerini performed two songs off her upcoming album Kelsea on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday night, her latest single “Homecoming Queen?” and the vulnerable “La.”

“I’ve got a love n’ hate relationship with La,” Ballerini sings in the atmospheric mid-tempo track, which finds the Tennessee native sharing feelings of inadequacy when she visits California’s celebrity mecca: “I’ve got some famous friends that I could call but I don’t know if I’m cool enough/what’s worse than spending time alone is one of them not picking up.

The Highwomen, Margo Price With Bob Weir Sing for Dwight Yoakam at 2019 Bmi Awards
The Cma Awards may get the lion’s share of the attention in country music this week, thanks mainly to its three hours in primetime on ABC, but Tuesday night’s Bmi Awards exude a certain kind of unmatchable cool.

Only in the confines of Bmi’s Nashville parking garage — where tables, a stage, and multiple bars are set up on the hard concrete — would you see the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir, in a black poncho and hat, and Margo Price in a rhinestone suit singing Dwight Yoakam’s “Fast as...

Maren Morris Leads Cma Awards Nominations With Six
The Country Music Association went with an all-female hosting lineup for this year’s show, and that woman-celebrating theme continued when nominations for the 53rd annual Cma Awards were announced Wednesday morning: Maren Morris led the pack with six nods.

Morris’ sophomore album, “Girl,” is up for album of the year, while the song of the same name, a recent No. 1 at country radio, is nominated in the single, song and music video categories. Her collaboration with Brothers Osborne, “All My Favorite People,” got a nod for musical event of the year. Morris also received a nomination for female vocalist of the year.

In short, Morris got a nomination in every category she possibly could have — with the exception of entertainer of the year. The Cma continues to reserve that top category for veteran acts with a lot of arena tours under their belt, even if that means leaving out...

Darrin Bradbury, “Talking Dogs & Atom Bombs”

Cult favorite Darrin Bradbury makes his Anti- Records debut with Talking Dogs & Atom Bombs, produced by the Milk Carton Kids’ Kenneth Pattengale and due out this September. The album’s title track dishes up Bradbury’s signature gumbo of countrified talking blues, oddball folk, and black humor, with some stoner-worthy philosophy about the origins of microwaves tossed into the pot.

Hear Billy Currington’s Soulful New Song ‘Details’
Billy Currington offers a rejoinder to the argument that men don’t pay attention in his new single “Details,” released on Friday. It’s the Georgia native’s follow-up to “Bring It on Over,” which was released in September 2018.

“I couldn’t tell ya, what I did today, or the day before,” sings Currington in “Details,” which was written by Nicolle Galyon, Mark Trussell, and Stephen Lee Olsen. But this little lapse of memory is just a pump-fake before he pulls up for the jumper: “Baby I’m in tune...
