Brooklyn-based sports startup Overtime has raised $80 million in Series C funding from investors including Bezos Expeditions (the personal investment company of Jeff Bezos), Drake and more than 25 current and former NBA stars including Trae Young, Devin Booker, Klay Thompson and Pau Gasol.

In total, Overtime, which was founded in 2016, has now raised more than $140 million in funding.

It also has 50 million social media followers and crosses verticals from content to e-commerce, its sports app, and live events. It said the fresh funds will go in part to develop new basketball league Ote (Overtime Elite), guaranteeing salaries for athletes and hiring a staff 80 league employees to launch an inaugural season in September.

The funding round was led by return investors Sapphire Sport and Black Capital along with Micromanagement Ventures (the family of the late David Stern), Alexis Ohanian, Jeff Kearl (via Pelion Capital), Morgan Stanley Counterpoint Global and Blackstone Strategic Partners.

Exclusive: With podcasting continuing to surge as a form of media and entertainment, and audio properties increasingly of interest to the film and TV business, MGM is taking a stake in a new entrant in the field called Audio Up.

The company was founded by Jared Gutstadt, former founder and CEO of the audio agency Jingle Punks, as a production studio, platform and network dedicated to podcasts. Its debut title last month was the Dennis Quaid-hosted interview show The Dennissance.

Audio Up’s scope includes scripted podcasts, including musicals, as well as interview series. As part of MGM’s investment, Audio Up will produce and distribute up to five podcasts per year for MGM and give its new investor an exclusive first look at developing, producing or distributing adaptations of its work.

The time has come for PETA to crown the Most Beautiful Vegan Celebrities of 2019, and this year’s titles are going to two athletes at the top of their games: co-captain of the U.S. women’s national soccer team Alex Morgan and NBA point guard Kyrie Irving.

“Alex Morgan and Kyrie Irving are saving animals not only by keeping them off their plates but also by showing the world what they can do on vegan fuel,” says PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. “They’re living proof that the future of professional sports is vegan.”

Morgan — an Olympic gold medalist who just became only the second player in Women’s World Cup history to score five goals in a match during Team USA’s record-breaking game against Thailand — went vegan shortly after starring in a companion animal campaign for PETA alongside her rescued pup, Blue, and hasn’t looked back.

The game was a culmination of Athletes vs. Cancer’s All Star Weekend. Started by Barnes after his mom died of cancer in 2007, Avc provides free clinics and mobile screening unites to underserved communities as well as financial assistance to people battling the disease and their family members.

“It’s a constant cause for me,” Barnes told Variety. “After losing my mom it’s something that’s very close to my heart that I talk about often. This weekend is just a small piece of what we’re doing throughout the year.”

The four-day event also included a cannabis summit, a bowling night, and a pool party.

Golden State Warriors star Kevin Durant shared his off-the-court playbook for making his way through the media business in a keynote Q&A at Variety’s Sports & Entertainment Breakfast Thursday morning at the Beverly Hilton.

Durant explained that when it comes to projects for his production company Thirty Five Media, basketball is always going to play a central theme.

“I think the soul of it all comes from just loving the game, and so many different avenues come from that,” he said in a conversation with Variety’s co-editor-in-chief Andrew Wallenstein. “I mean, everything you have to muster up to become a basketball player — I think everyone could relate to that story. It’s always gonna be about basketball for me.”

Rich Kleiman, Durant’s partner at Thirty Five, added that their upcoming slate of projects is “all about that backdrop of basketball, which is what he loves and is what I love.
