Glen Powell's Upcoming 2024 Movie Confirms A Surprising Career Trend
Image
Glen Powell's career has formed a surprising trend featuring many movies about flying. Powell's flying movie trend includes roles in Top Gun: Maverick and Devotion and producing the documentary The Blue Angels. This habit of making flying movies has a foundation in Powell's real life.

One upcoming movie featuring Glen Powell proves a surprising and unusual trend for the actor's overall career. Powell, who stars in the upcoming Twisters, has been performing onscreen since 2003. After appearing in early teen features including the Richard Linklater movie Fast Food Nation, he began to appear in more prominent titles including The Dark Knight Rises and The Expendables 3 before getting his breakthrough role as the charismatic and cruel Chad Radwell in the Ryan Murphy horror-comedy Scream Queens. More recently, he starred in the hit rom-com Anyone But You, which grossed $219.2 million against a $25 million budget.

Devotion BTS Clip Sees Jonathan Majors Pay Respects To Jesse Brown
Image
Screen Rant is proud to present an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from Devotion's digital release. Based on a book by Adam Makos, the Korean War epic follows U.S. Navy fighter pilots Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner, the former of which became the Navy's first Black aviator. Directed by J.D. Dillard (whose own father was a Blue Angel) and written by Jake Crane and Jonathan Stewart, Devotion tackles the racial tension of the time period and the dangers of their job.

Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell star in Devotion as Brown and Hudner respectively, and they are joined by an ensemble cast that includes pop star Joe Jonas, actress Christina Jackson, and screen veteran Thomas Sadoski. Powell's Lieutenant Judner is a newcomer to Fighter Squadron 32, who meets and befriends Ensign Brown, the lone Black man in their unit. J.D. Dillard
‘Devotion’ Review: Jonathan Majors Pilots a Drama That’s Searing on Racism But Rah-Rah About War
J.D. Dillard
Squadrons of F4U Corsair aircraft swarming the sky in perfect formation, bullets dancing past and through them, explosions and crashes galore: J.D. Dillard’s “Devotion” is a strikingly attractive war film. Although making war look this pretty may undermine the whole “war is hell” vibe that most movies go for, “Devotion” has a more romantic notion of its central conflict. Dillard paints the Korean War as the backdrop for heroic deeds and masculine bonding, never mind the complexities of the geopolitical stage.

Never mind a lot of complexity, actually. As a war story, it’s oddly rah-rah for the contemporary cinematic landscape. The Korean War was a conflict that, as far as “Devotion” is concerned, had to be fought and had nothing to debate. Indeed, the aviators at the center of “Devotion” were mostly flyboys from World War II who finished training too late to see action in the so-called “Big Show,...

Awards Season Catchup: "Devotion"
Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
By Abe Friedtanzer

While Top Gun: Maverick has been enjoying a warm reception from audiences and awards bodies alike, another film about daring pilots is flying around in theaters. Based on the 2015 nonfiction book Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice by Adam Makos, Devotion is about a powerful friendship between two Navy pilots during the Korean War. One of them is Jonathan Majors, the only Black member of the unit. In the film's other Top Gun: Maverick connection, the other one is played by Glen Powell, who portrays Hangman in the present-day film.

Devotion opens on Tom Hudner (Glen Powell) arriving to join Fighter Squadron 32, which already includes Jesse Brown (Majors), who faces routine racism from his fellow Navy officers and the neighbors who believe that his mere existence is stirring up trouble...

Glen Powell’s 10 Best Movies & TV Shows, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Hollywood's latest biographical war film is here, and it delivers great charm and emotion. Starring Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell, Devotion was released on November 23 and though it had a weak opening weekend at the box office, grossing nearly 6 million (via Box Office Mojo) those who saw the film sing its praises.

Given his great immense talent, it's not surprising that Powell provided another great performance. As fans can see from his extensive filmography on Rotten Tomatoes, much of which is certified fresh, he is able to adapt quickly to any character: whether that is as a hero, a complex villain, a fighter, or just a relatable, down-to-earth person. However, while all his characters have made a memorable impression, there's no doubt that some stand out a lot more than others.

‘Devotion’ Cast and Character Guide: Who Plays Who in the Naval Aviation Drama (Photos)
Glen Powell and Jonathan Majors in Devotion (2022)
“Devotion,” based on the book by Adam Makos, flew into theaters over Thanksgiving break. The film about flight, friendship and family landed at an ideal time in the holiday season, and it features a number of talented actors who bring the true story to life onscreen. Before he appeared in the role of Hangman in “Top Gun: Maverick,” Glen Powell knew he wanted to bring the story of Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner to life — Powell finished Makos’ book in 2016, after which he began to develop the project. Joined by director Jd Dillard and actor Jonathan Majors who portrays the precedent-setting Jesse Brown, the crew launches into a harrowing and heartwarming story.

“Devotion” chronicles the journey of two wingmen in the U.S. Navy’s Fighter Squadron 32. The pair came from completely opposite backgrounds, yet they joined forces to become the most well-known naval aviators to date, risking their lives in...

Glen Powell and Jonathan Majors in Devotion (2022)
“Devotion” adapts the remarkable true story of Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner, Navy pilots following WWII and before The Korean War who had each other’s backs no matter what. Lieutenant Tom Hudner passed up Harvard to go to the Naval Academy, and he became Jesse’s wingman.

Based on the book by Adam Makos, “Devotion” follows Jesse and Tom’s journey alongside Fighting 32, their assigned Flight Squadron, as tension built following World War II to bleed into The Korean War. Alongside the starring pair, Christina Jackson, Joe Jonas and more appear.

Joe Jonas explains why he thought he had a shot at getting Spider-Man role over Andrew Garfield
Joe Jonas
Joe Jonas has reflected on losing the role of Spider-Man to Andrew Garfield.

The Jonas Brothers singer auditioned for the part of the titular superhero for 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, which eventually went to Garfield.

Jonas, 33, opened up about his acting experience in a recent interview on Just For Variety podcast, during which he was asked what role he considered to be “the one that got away”.

He said: “In the moment [when you lose a part to someone else], you’re destroyed or you’re defeated. But you realise this person was brilliant.

“I remember years ago I was up for Spider-Man and I was so, so excited, and it was the year Andrew Garfield got it. Obviously, he was the right one.”

Jonas – who married Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner in 2019 – went on to explain that he believed he had a good chance at getting the part because the director Marc Webb used to work on music videos.

Image
Set during the Korean War, Devotion primarily follows a pair of U.S. Navy fighter pilots, and these main characters are portrayed in the movie's cast by two of Hollywood's most promising rising stars. Based on a true story and adapted from the nonfiction book Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice by Adam Makos, the movie is set in the early 1950s, when Americans aided South Korea in their conflict with North Korea. Devotion focuses on two real American pilots who served in the Korean War and became great friends and even greater aviators.

While centered on two main characters, played by Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell, Devotion also features a noteworthy supporting cast as well. Jonathan Majors On The Extreme Relevance Of Jesse Brown's Story In Devotion
Image
It's remarkable how often seemingly ancient history becomes relevant again in our modern day -- sometimes tragically so. Such is the case in director J.D. Dillard's newest movie, "Devotion." The movie focuses on the Korean War of the early 1950s, telling the harrowing true story of two elite U.S. Navy fighter pilots. Specifically, the movie shines a light on Jesse Brown, played by Jonathan Majors ("Lovecraft Country"), who became the first Black aviator to ever complete the U.S. Navy's basic flight training program.

Looper's Don Kaye recently had the chance to speak with Majors in honor of the film's forthcoming release this weekend. During the conversation, Kaye asked the actor who relevant Brown's story is all these years later, particularly for Black people who are still facing roadblocks in today's society. Majors, for his part, feels Brown's story is an ever-relevant hero's journey to be used as...

Jonathan Majors, Glen Powell and the Cast of ‘Devotion’ Salute the Movie’s Real-Life Heroes
Image
The Los Angeles premiere of “Devotion,” starring Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell, served as both a salute to the legacy and lineage of Korean War heroes Jesse L. Brown, the first African American Navy aviator, and Thomas Hudner, his devoted wingman, as well as a celebration of the familial bonds forged during the shoot.

“This movie, in so many ways, is a family effort,” director Jd Dillard said, introducing the film’s cast and crew before a packed house inside the Regency Village Theatre in Westwood on Tuesday night. “We all moved together like the boys shipping off to war to make this movie.”

Dillard then asked the few dozen descendants of Brown and Hudner in attendance to stand for a round of applause. It’s overwhelming to share these moments with the families, Dillard told Variety on the red carpet, but, he added, “There’s no other way to do it.

Jonathan Majors' Family History Upped The Pressure While Filming Devotion
Image
"Devotion" is the story of Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner Jr., two of the most decorated aviators from the Korean War. Jonathan Majors ("Loki") plays Jesse Brown, the first Black man to complete the U.S. Navy's basic flight training program. Glen Powell ("Top Gun: Maverick") plays Hudner Jr., his wingman who goes to incredible lengths to save his life during the conflict. It's a story of enduring friendship, loyalty, and love. "Devotion" is based on the book "Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice" by Adam Makos.

Majors recently stopped by "The Kelly Clarkson Show" to chat about "Devotion," where he revealed that his family history really upped the stakes for him. It wasn't just his own history, though. Many people involved with "Devotion" have family in the military. It was a lot to take on, in addition to flight training for the film's practical work and...

The Real-Life People Behind Devotion Talk About The Legacy Of Jesse Brown And Tom Hudner Jr. [Exclusive]

"Devotion" opens in theaters this Thanksgiving. Tom Cruise Gave Glen Powell His Blessing To Do Both Top Gun: Maverick And Devotion
Image
When two star-studded films about naval aviation premiere within the same year, there's bound to be some comparison between them. For "Top Gun: Maverick" and "Devotion," both of which feature actor Glen Powell, such comparisons are all but inevitable. There are, of course, a few differences between the films: While "Maverick" is the follow-up to a great (and fictional) Tom Cruise film, "Devotion" depicts the true story of naval aviators Lt. Tom Hudner (Powell) and Ensign Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors). Still, that's not quite enough to keep jokes about Powell's fascination with flight at bay. Paired with the fact that he's also got his pilot's license in real life, it's a bit more than a casual coincidence.

Powell himself is well-aware of the pattern beginning to emerge in his filmography. It made it difficult to say yes to "Top Gun," especially since he had a responsibility to "Devotion" as the film's executive producer.

Glen Powell On His Mom's Ability As An Actor And Fighting To Make Devotion Happen [Interview]
Image
"Devotion," directed by filmmaker J.D. Dillard, will hit theaters this Thanksgiving, and one of the big reasons we have the film at all is because star Glen Powell ("Top Gun: Maverick") was devoted to making it happen. After reading the 2017 book "Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice" by Adam Makos, he was determined to play the role of real-life Korean War aviator Tom Hudner Jr., who fought to save the life of his brave and talented wingman Jesse Brown, played by Jonathan Majors.

The Korean War is often referred to as "the forgotten war." We don't see as many films set during this conflict as we do with, say, WWII, but the true story of a powerful friendship and some of the most celebrated military men in the Korean War has finally made it to the big screen. I recently attended the red carpet for "Devotion" in...

When Glen Powell decided he wanted to play real-life naval officer Tom Hudner nearly six years ago, someone else already held the screen rights to the story.

“That person had a couple drinks at a Hollywood party and told me they weren’t planning on making this movie,” Powell recalled to The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s premiere on Tuesday. “And I said, ‘Would you mind if I made it?’ And they were like, ‘Yeah, sure.’ So I went to [author Adam Makos], and I said, ‘Hey, if you let me have this, I promise I’ll tell it in the best way possible.'”

Based on Makos’ novel Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice, the film follows the true story of naval aviator duo Lt. Hudner (Powell) and Ensign Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors) — the navy’s first Black carrier pilot — during the Korean War.

Glen Powell Was Completely Naked While Pitching Movie To Jonathan Majors
Image
Jonathan Majors shares an interesting experience when Glen Powell pitched him the upcoming Korean War movie Devotion. The film is a war epic based on a book of the same name by Adam Makos, which tells the true story of two US Navy fighter pilots during the Korean War. Majors plays ensign Jesse Brown, the Navy's first black carrier pilot, while Powell plays Lieutenant Tom Hudner, a white man from New England who passed up Harvard to fly fighter planes in the Korean War. The movie highlights the strong friendship between two men who come from different racial and economic backgrounds in a time of segregation in the United States.

Devotion premieres in theaters worldwide on November 23, so Majors is currently doing press rounds to promote the movie. In a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the actor talked about his experience working on Devotion, meeting Glen Powell, and also...

Glen Powell and Jonathan Majors in Devotion (2022)
‘Devotion’ Star Jonathan Majors on How Playing the U.S. Navy’s First Black Aviator Made Him a Better Actor (Video)
Glen Powell and Jonathan Majors in Devotion (2022)
“Devotion,” directed by Jd Dillard and starring Glen Powell, Jonathan Majors, Joe Jonas and Christina Jackson, soars into theaters this November. The story, based on the book by Adam Makos, is the second aviation film starring Glen Powell out this year, but he started work on this one (which he also exec-produced) before “Top Gun: Maverick” came along. “Devotion” screened at the Toronto Film Festival, where the cast and director stopped by TheWrap and Shutterstock’s Interview and Portrait Studio for a discussion about the filmmaking process.

“This predated ‘Top Gun’ by a few years,” Powell told TheWrap’s Executive Editor, Awards, Steve Pond. “I read the book six years ago, and this was my passion project. So I think maybe three years into the process, ‘Top Gun’ came along and I had to ask the producers, ‘Hey, I love ‘Devotion.’ Is there a way to do both?’ It’s...

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas Bring Their Love to the TIFF Red Carpet
Image
Sophie Turner is supporting Joe Jonas at the Toronto International Film Festival. On Sept. 12, the couple made their first red carpet appearance after welcoming their second child in July, and they looked fabulous. Stepping out for the premiere of "Devotion," which Jonas stars in, the duo posed for sweet photos on the carpet. Turner and Jonas both wore Louis Vuitton outfits. Jonas was styled by Sydney Lopez and wore a velvet, chest-bearing suit with a diamond brooch. Turner, on the other hand, opted for a pastel, floor-length dress with multicolored feathers. She was styled by Kate Young.

Jonas stars in "Devotion" alongside Glen Powell, Jonathan Majors, and Christina Jackson, who were also in attendance at the premiere event. The movie, which is based on true events, hits theaters on Nov. 23. It's based on the book "Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice" by Adam Makos and details the...

‘Devotion’ Review: Despite a Passionate Jonathan Majors, This Korean War Epic Seldom Takes Flight
Image
Click here to read the full article.

If you believe the marketing, then Devotion, an inspirational aerial combat epic set during the Korean War, would like very much to be thought of as Top Gun: Corsair.

Strip away the IMAX scope, the booming score and the flyboy swagger, however, and all that remains is a hollow shell of bland, beaten-down war movie tropes that leave Jonathan Majors to effectively fend for himself with his deeply-rooted lead portrayal of the first Black aviator in Navy history.

Based on the book of the same name by Adam Makos, which described the friendship between Majors’ Jesse Brown and his fellow wingman, Tom Hudner (played by Glen Powell), the story has been brought to the screen by director J.D. Dillard (himself the son of only the second African American member of the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels squadron) with a great deal of respect but insufficient dramatic depth.

‘Devotion’ Trailer With Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell; Sundance Institute Launches Latine Fellowship – Film News in Brief
Image
Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell are taking off in the official trailer for “Devotion,” the new drama set to release this Thanksgiving.

Based on the nonfiction book by Adam Makos, “Devotion” focuses on the military careers of Jesse Brown (Majors) and Tom Hudner (Powell), two elite Navy fighter pilots who served during the Korean War. In spite of the racism that Brown experiences as one of the first Black aviators, he forms a close camaraderie with the white Hudner, and the two go on to work together as wingmen in several battles, including the Battle of Chosin Reservoir.

Along with Majors and Powell, “Devotion” also stars Christina Jackson, Joe Jonas and Thomas Sadoski. J.D. Dillard directs the film from a screenplay by J.D. Dillard from a screenplay by Jake Crane and Jonathan A. H. Stewart. Dillard and Powell executive produce while Molly Smith, Rachel Smith, Thad Luckinbill and Trent Luckinbill produce for Columbia Pictures.
