Hulu Launching ‘Lol Live’ Stand-Up Series From Hartbeat; Late Comedian Ken Flores Among Performers

Exclusive: Hulu is continuing to double down on laughs with its latest stand-up series Lol Live.

Lol Live, which will feature ten, 30-minute sets from a range of comics, comes from Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat and premieres on June 6.

Comedians featured include SNL’s Devon Walker, Chico Bean, Brandi Denise, Chinedu Unaka, Daphnique Springs, Justin Silva, Lea’h Sampson, Malik B, Sydnee Washington, and the late Ken Flores.

Flores’s performance marks the first longform special ever taped by the comedian and was filmed shortly before he died in January at the age of 28.

The streamer will roll out two new specials each month; Flores and Springs will kick off the run, followed by Bean and Unaka on July 11, Walker and Washington on August 15, Denise and Malik B on September 5, and Silva and Sampson on October 3.

The sets were filmed last summer during Hartbeat Weekend at Resorts World Las Vegas.

The NAACP Image Awards has announced its second round of winners in non-televised categories such as outstanding variety show, reality program, reality competition or game show and children’s program.

Tuesday’s winners included DC Young Fly for outstanding host in a reality/reality competition, game show or variety (series or special) for Celebrity Squares; Leslie Jones for outstanding performance in a shortform series in The Daily Show After the Cut; Kyla Pratt for outstanding character voice-over performance (television) in The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder; Issa Rae for outstanding character voice-over performance (motion picture) in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse; and Eboni K. Brown for outstanding news and information podcast in Holding Court with Eboni K. Williams.

‘Celebrity Squares’ Game Show Hosted By DC Young Fly Set For Fall Premiere On VH1; Kevin Hart & Jesse Collins Among EPs

Exclusive: A new take on the classic Hollywood Squares game show is headed to VH1. The network has teamed with Jesse Collins Entertainment and Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat on Celebrity Squares, a modern twist on the classic format featuring Black pop culture trivia.

Hosted by actor and comedian DC Young Fly, “the series will bring cultural icons together for 20 fun and spontaneous half-hour episodes,” per VH1. Celebrity guests include Babyface, Bobby Brown, Tiffany Haddish, Kirk Franklin, Bresha Webb, Luenell, Taye Diggs and more. Celebrity Squares premieres at 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 17, on VH1.

Celebrity Squares will bring two contestants together to play Tic-Tac-Toe, banking cash and prizes along the way. The player with the most money in their bank at the end of the game will move on to the bonus round for a chance to win a $10,000 cash prize.

Exclusive: Stand-up comedian and actress Dulcé Sloan has signed with APA.

Sloan is a longtime correspondent on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show who will serve as a guest host for the series for a week beginning Monday, May 1. Additionally, she currently brings to life the character of Honeybee Shaw–Tobin in the Fox animated series, The Great North, alongside Will Forte and Jenny Slate.

She has appeared multiple times on the CNN New Year’s Eve Special with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen, the late-night show Conan, among others. Additional credits include RuPaul’s Drag Race, Late Night with Seth Meyers, @Midnight with Chris Hardwick, The Steve Harvey Show and Last Call With Carson Daly.

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion were the big winners at the 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards, sharing statuettes for Song of the Year, Best Hip Hop Video and Best Collaboration, for their work on Atlantic Records single “Wap.”

Tyler, the Creator, Jay Z and Lil Baby followed with two wins each—the former, receiving the inaugural Rock the Bells Cultural Influence Award presented by LL Cool J, along with trophies for Best Live Performer and Hip Hop Album of the Year. Jay Z won the Sweet 16: Best Featured Verse and Impact Track awards for his Nipsey Hussle collaboration “What It Feels Like”; Lil Baby, meanwhile, claimed Hip Hop Artist of the Year and Best Duo or Group, sharing the latter prize with Lil Durk.

This year’s I Am Hip Hop honor went to Nelly. Yung Bleu, Saweetie, Missy Elliot, and J. Cole were among additional winners.

Comedy supergroup 85 South hosted the ceremony taped at The Cobb Energy Centre in Atlanta, which was simulcast tonight across BET, BET Her, MTV2 and VH1. The show featured performances by Young Thug, Gunna, Bia, Lil Jon, Baby Keem, Latto, Tobe Nwige, Fat & Nell, Isaiah Rashad, and Doechii & Kal Banx, among others.

The 2020 BET Hip Hop Awards were presented on October 27, and Megan Thee Stallion was the big winner with three victories out of her eight nominations: Artist of the Year, Hustler of the Year and Best Collaboration (for her remix of “Savage” with Beyonce). “Savage” also won Beyonce the award for Best Featured Verse. Other champs on Tuesday night included Roddy Ricch, who claimed Album of the Year for “Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial.” His chart-topping breakthrough solo hit “The Box” also won Song of the Year. Among other chart-topping victors, Pop Smoke won Best New Artist posthumously after his shocking murder in February when he was only 20-years-old.
