Quentin Tarantino has decided that he’s only going to direct ten feature films, then retire from that part of his career. For a full year, we were hearing that his tenth and final film was going to be something called The Movie Critic, which would reunite him with Brad Pitt, reprising the role of stuntman Cliff Booth from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. But then, Tarantino decided to scrap the project. Given that Pitt won an Oscar for playing Cliff Booth, he was understandably disappointed that the movie wouldn’t be happening – and, in a shocking turn of events, he got Tarantino to agree to let another director bring the script for The Movie Critic to the screen! Pitt has reteamed with director David Fincher for the film, which may or may not be called The Continuing Adventures of Cliff Booth now – and below, we have put together...

For the perennial NFL sponsor Bud Light, Peyton Manning and a distinctly slapstick sense of humor appear to have brewed up a winning formula.
The adult beverage brand, also one of the biggest advertisers in the U.S., is kicking off its 2025-2026 NFL campaign this week, once again turning to Peyton Manning for a sixth spot for the company.
According to Todd Allen, senior vp, marketing for Bud Light at Anheuser-Busch, the campaign can actually be traced to the Netflix series Quarterback, which is produced by Manning’s Omaha Productions, and which Bud Light partnered on via a social campaign called “Armchair Quarterback.”
“We parodied the great lengths the quarterbacks were going through with our own version of a digital comedic short with Armchair Quarterback showing the great lengths our fans are going to for their favorite team,” Allen says. “So we’re kind of taking that theme into the regular season now.

It’s after August 1st, which means that the news of who will be in Season 51 of Saturday Night Live could start trickling out any day now. That’s because August 1st is the official deadline for contracts of returning cast to be signed, which means that those who aren’t renewing or being asked back will start announcing their departures from the show. And they, of course, will then need to be replaced with someone new.
There’s been major speculation about who will be staying on the show after the end of the historic 50th season. Is Michael Che leaving? Is Bowen Yang heading to the big screen full time after Wicked? There’s been no clear information on if any of the show’s big hitters are staying or going.
But the absence of official information doesn’t mean there are no leads to follow. According to Late Nighter,...

Louis C.K. wasn’t exactly a beloved comedy figure when he was a 2022 guest on Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast with hosts Shane Gillis and Matt McCusker. But that didn’t stop him from spending hours breaking down the U.S. Presidents — like, all of them — in a massive, four-part history episode. Gillis eventually took a break from discussing “fascinating dude” Lyndon B. Johnson because, in the podcast world, somebody’s got to pay the bills.
“Let’s do this,” Gillis said. “We’re going to read some ads, and then we’re going to switch over to the Patreon for the last part.”
C.K. couldn’t believe it. “Why do you switch?” he asked. “Why are you making them go on Patreon?”
“That way…”
“That way what?” asked an incredulous C.K. “You need the money?”
Gillis was no longer an up-and-comer at this point, with multiple...

No one is saying that it’s easy to be a crowd-pleasing comic. Finding that line can be brutal. Taking no risks makes you boring, taking too many will have you in the internet’s crosshairs. That’s not really a career ender these days, but it’s still not enjoyable.
Shane Gillis is someone who steps into controversy relatively often; he got fired from Saturday Night Live in 2019 for making racist and sexist jokes, and his vein of humor can sometimes be edgelord adjacent. I’m sure if more people watched Tires on Netflix, they’d be angry about it.
Gillis is still popular — he’s got the Netflix show, he’s a semi-regular host of SNL despite his firing, and this week he was the host of the ESPYs. His performance, both to the room of highly lauded athletes up for awards and the nation, caused a few dustups.

The CBS cancellation of Stephen Colbert and Late Night more broadly has brought the ire of the internet. The story has completely dominated the news cycle, even taking away from the joy of finding out that Donald Trump is dealing with swollen ankles and venous insufficiencies. Wall-to-wall coverage and panic about whether axing Colbert is the final marker in the race to total fascist takeover is going to benefit some people, while others are really, really not faring well from the pandemonium.
Here are the our winners (bad) and losers (good) of the Stephen Colbert cancellation…
Winners
Donald Trump. Getting one of your bullies fired is typically an underdog story seen in Horrible Bosses or Psych. But big dog Trump, only ever “under” the self-inflicted poor circulation from a lifetime of mainlining McDonald’s and well-done steak, got what he wanted. Colbert’s jokes about Trump will end in 2026.

The Espy Awards showered kudos on female athletes during Wednesday’s glitzy ceremony at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.
Fortunately, the honorees delivered enough inspiration and muscular prowess — see: rugby star Ilona Maher, who was honored as breakthrough athlete of the year — to offset the edgy jabs aimed at women in the monologue from ESPYs host Shane Gillis.
A rundown of highlights from the Espy Awards and a salute to Disneyland on its 70th birthday are the stories are included in today’s installment of “Daily Variety,” a new podcast that features conversations with Variety journalists about news, trends and personalities making waves in media and entertainment.
I ran into ESPN chief Jimmy Pitaro in the Dolby lobby after the ESPYs were over. We talked about the very big, somewhat complicated sales pitch that the Worldwide Leader is preparing to lob at consumers as it launches its standalone ESPN streaming app later this fall.

The 2025 Espy Awards will likely be remembered for Shane Gillis’ monologue, even if the comedy was largely forgettable.
Gillis, a standup comedian and the co-creator and star of Netflix’s Tires, is probably best known for lasting like four hours at Saturday Night Live — Lorne Michaels felt compelled to fire Gillis after some non-pc clips of a 2018 episode of Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast were resurfaced — though he has gone on to host the show, twice.
By now, you’ve probably read both praise and criticism on Gillis’ monologue — he’s that kind of comic. Gillis is wildly popular among his base, and controversial among non-fans. This was always gonna go some sort of way, and ESPN executives knew that when they gave Gillis the gig. Gillis has appeared on the network’s College GameDay show, where he (internet-)famously got into it with Nick Saban, an all-time great...

Brooks Nader suffered a wardrobe malfunction at the ESPYs on Wednesday, her second wardrobe malfunction in July.
While on the red carpet, Nader’s white silk dress pulled to the side, resulting in a nip-slip in front of the cameras.
Pictures were taken of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model fixing her dress while walking onto the stage with Joey Logano.
Last year, Nader was reportedly dating NFL icon Tom Brady.
Nader previously experienced a wardrobe malfunction at Wimbledon, with stains showing through on her white skirt. She turned what could have been an embarrassing situation to her advantage, securing a sponsorship with the feminine hygiene brand U by Kotex.
Nader continued to struggle with keeping her wardrobe intact throughout the show, and once the event was over.

Comedian Shane Gillis was met with mixed reactions from the crowd as he hosted the ESPYs on Wednesday night, though he did make one move that “The View” host and former stand-up comedian Joy Behar didn’t appreciate.
Early on in his monologue, Gillis made a joke about Donald Trump’s desire to host a UFC fight at the White House, with the punchline being “the last time he staged a fight in D.C., Mike Pence almost died.” When the joke fell flat but got some scattered applause, Gillis told the crowd, “you don’t have to do that. It was fine, I didn’t write it.”
And that shade toward his writers irked Behar pretty good.
“Never do that,” she said on Thursday’s episode of the ABC talk show. “Johnny Carson was on the air for, I don’t know, a 100 years? Never once did he say,...

ESPYs host Shane Gillis had a hard time getting the sensitive, standoffish crowd at last night’s ceremony to so much as crack a smile, but the biggest L Gillis took was when he told a joke that definitely lost him a lucrative cabinet appointment as Secretary of Asian-American Affairs.
Back in February, President Donald Trump gave a glowing review to Gillis after the two shook hands and took a picture at Super Bowl Lix at the Superdome in New Orleans. Trump told the press that he thought Gillis was “very good” and “on our side,” despite the fact that the stand-up has been consistently critical of the Trump administration and even once joked that Trump would be the funniest president to see assassinated, prompting an investigation by the Secret Service.

The audience at last night’s Espy Awards was lukewarm at best toward their host Shane Gillis, just like Norm Macdonald would have wanted.
Much like Gillis’ hosting gigs at Saturday Night Live, where he famously set the record for quickest turnaround from hired-to-fired, Gillis’ performance at the awards ceremony dedicated to giving America’s most beloved, compensated and awarded athletes even more attention was underscored by his visible nerves and the sporting world’s muted responses to his opening monologue. Despite how the wealthiest and most worshipped celebrities in our country often refused to laugh at themselves, Gillis’ material, unlike his stage presence, was actually rock-solid more often than not, and he capped off the up-and-down monologue with a tribute to the greatest ESPYs host ever and a jab at said legend’s favorite punching bag.
In honor of Macdonald, Gillis closed his set with an O.J. Simpson joke that temporarily turned the ultra-rich,...

You know you’re having a tough night at the ESPYs when People calls you out for a performance “that appeared to fall flat.” For Shane Gillis, host of the sports awards show, the boos were another sign it wasn’t going great.
Gillis did get laughs at some points during his opening monologue. Bill Belichick and his girlfriend Jordan Hudson are always fair game, apparently, and the comedian got his biggest laughs with jokes like this after a Shohei Otani bookie bit: “A bookie is what Bill Belichick reads to his girlfriend before bedtime. They read, Very Horny Caterpillar, The Little Engine That Could But Needed A Pill First and, of course, the classic, Good Night Boobs.”
His follow-up Belichick joke wasn’t as well received, for obvious reasons: “He won six Super Bowls. He’s dating a hot 24-year-old. Maybe if you guys won six Super Bowls, you...

On June 24, it was announced that comedian Shane Gillis would be hosting this year’s Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards. The news was met with some excitement among fans, but when he walked onto the stage at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, things changed.
Unfortunately, Gillis’ jokes seem to have fallen flat as he struggled through his long monologue where he took a dig at anyone and everyone. From Donald Trump to basketball player Caitlin Clark, Gillis spared no one.
While he received a few laughs here and there, the audience present at the venue just seemed a little too uncomfortable and this didn’t go unnoticed by the comedian himself.

Hosting an award ceremony comes with certain expectations and jokes at the expense of famous names are pretty common.

Host Shane Gillis brought his trademark brand of combative humor to the opening monologue of Wednesday night’s Espy Awards in Hollywood, drawing a mixed response from the audience of professional athletes and Hollywood celebrities.
The host’s jabs came in contrast to the high volume of kudos bestowed on major figures in women’s sports, including gymnast Simone Biles, rugby star Ilona Maher, recently retired soccer superstar Alex Morgan, retired WNBA great Diana Taurasi, tennis star Sloane Stephens and Penn State volleyball coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley. Once one of the comedy business’ most influential brands, Just for Laughs last year faced a stunning downfall. After four decades as a top industry kingmaker — a place where reps and bookers discovered the next big thing, and a short set could change your life — the legendary festival filed for bankruptcy protection in 2024, its future uncertain amid tough economic conditions.
The warning signs had been building: a leadership scandal, pandemic-era shutdowns, and an evolving comedy economy where the algorithm dictated who broke through as much as any industry gatekeeper. As comics went viral on TikTok and built followings on YouTube, the question emerged: did Jfl still matter?
And yet, the legacy is undeniable. Founded in 1982 as a two-day francophone event, Jfl has exploded in the years since into a marquee name — with Montreal as the flagship festival and numerous other satellite events taking place over the course of the year.

There has never been an Andrew Schulz-related headline that’s particularly funny. Normally the podcast host, actor and comedian is making news for the sort of reactionary comedy (or commentary) that often feels like it’s masking a lack of cleverness by being incendiary. He’s a comedian whose audience is generally described as “bros.” He tried to pick a fight with Kendrick Lamar. He kind of sucks.
But on Tires, from creators and writers Steve Gerben, Shane Gillis and John McKeever, Schulz does manage to find a stride: as an Italian-American used cars salesman named Andy Andiamo. He appears in nine episodes across the first two seasons’ 18 episodes, usually alongside Tommy Pope, portraying Tommy, his fellow used cars salesman at Andiamo Auto Sales. In this role, Schulz isn’t tasked with discussing current events or offering up analysis on internet discourse. He’s just a pervy, overly-animated dude who loves talking about women.

Netflix has swiftly renewed its Shane Gillis-led workplace comedy, Tires, for a third season. The streamer announced the show's renewal less than a month after its second outing premiered on June 5. Tires centers on Will (Steve Gerben), who has taken over his father's struggling auto repair chain, Valley Forge Automotive. He's not exactly qualified for the role, but he tries to make the business succeed, all while dealing with his undermining cousin and employee, Shane (Gillis).
The show's journey to and on the streamer has been an interesting one. Gillis self-financed the six-episode inaugural season, and Netflix acquired the series as part of a deal that also included a new stand-up special for the comedian on the streaming service. Netflix and Gillis's first special, Beautiful Dogs, was released in 2023. He was also featured in 2024's Netflix is a Joke Fest.

It's no secret that working at Saturday Night Live means trying to be creative in perhaps the most high-pressure environment in television. For some cast members, that pressure can be very motivating. But for The Bear's Abby Elliott, it felt more like a threat.
Elliott joined Saturday Night Live during season 34, making history as the child of a former SNL cast member. Her father, Chris Elliott, spent one season on the show in season 20. Her tenure on the show was marked by a string of celebrity impressions, including Angelina Jolie, Katy Perry, Khloe Kardashian, and Zooey Deschanel.
But the dream job on SNL could feel much more like a nightmare for Elliott. Things can get a little cut-throat at the show as performers compete to get their material on air or find a way to become a favorite of the writers.

Netflix doesn't have the best track record of renewing popular shows. However, it looks like it's betting on highly underrated series more than ever.
The workplace comedy Tires premiered in 2024 to poor reviews from the critics, but enthusiastic ones from the audience. For Season 2, the critics finally came along and gave the follow-up season a positive score. A few weeks after the release of Season 2, Variety confirms Netflix has renewed Tires for Season 3.
The comedy series comes from Shane Gillis, Steve Gerben, and John McKeever. Season 2 hit Netflix on June 5 and, less than a month later, it has already scored a renewal for Season 3. Since its premiere, the comedy series has released a new season every year, and that will continue to be true for Season 3, as well, which will return in 2026. There is no release date yet, but since both seasons premiered in late spring, the third entry might follow a similar path.

The second season of Shane Gillis’ hit comedy series, Tires, debuted earlier this year, and now Netflix has finally addressed the future of the 55% Rotten Tomatoes series. Netflix has officially confirmed that Tires has been renewed for a third season, which is expected to begin streaming in 2026. This decision comes with little shock — the second season of Tires was far more successful than the first, earning stronger viewership and better scores from both critics and audiences on the world’s leading aggregate site. Tires Season 1 premiered with a “rotten” 40% from critics and an 87% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and Season 2 built upon this with a 71% critic's score and an 89% rating on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. Hope you’re not getting tired of Tires, because there’s more on the way. (Also, you should not be — Tires season two was great.)
Netflix has renewed Tires for a third season, which will debut in 2026. Tires hails from comedian Shane Gillis, its breakout star (for my money) Steve Gerben and the director (John) McKeever.
In Tires, Will (Gerben), the “nervous and unqualified heir to an auto repair chain,” attempts to turn his father’s tire-shop business around “despite constant torture from his cousin,” Shane (Gillis), the synopsis reads. Shane is also Will’s employee.
In season two, after the success of Will’s and Shane’s big marketing idea — to sell tires to their customers at cost (and upsell them on other repair services) — the two “rush to grow personally and professionally without fully realizing the cost of doing business,” per Netflix. Per me, they don’t really grow personally or professionally,...

Exclusive: Legendary’s feature adaptation of the Capcom video game Street Fighter is getting a strong boost of comic relief as sources tell Deadline that Andrew Schulz has joined the cast. While not confirmed, sources say he will play the character Dan Hibiki.
He joins a cast that includes the previously announced Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo, Jason Momoa, Roman Reigns and Orville Peck. Bad Trip‘s Kitao Sakurai is the director.
Reps for Legendary had no comment and the plot details remain under wraps.
First appearing in Street Fighter Alpha in 1995, Hibiki is consistently portrayed as an overconfident, arrogant and utterly feeble character. The role seems perfect for Schulz given his comedic background that has made him one of today’s biggest stand-up acts. While this role will lean heavy on the comedy, don’t be surprised if Schulz gets a chance to throw down like his fellow co-stars.

The Golden Bachelor celebrates finding love in your golden years — but the new star isn’t interested in dating anyone his own age.
Mel Owens, the leading man of the upcoming season of ABC’s senior dating show, warned an executive producer about the women on his season, “If they’re 60 or over, I’m cutting them,” he tells the sports podcast In the Trenches. He adds that during the casting process, he told producers he preferred women aged “45 to 60… just being honest.” (Owens, for the record, is 66 years old.)

Bert Kreischer has made five stand-up specials for Netflix, and now he’s taking the time-honored path trod by many comedians: starring in a sitcom.
Kreischer will play the title role in and is a co-creator of Free Bert, a six-episode comedy the streamer has ordered. Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel (The Grinder, Huge in France) co-created the show with Kreischer and will serve as showrunners, writers and directors. The cast also includes Arden Myrin, Lilou Lang and Ava Ryan.
In Free Bert, Kreischer will play a version of himself — a “shirtless comedian, party legend, perpetual wildcard,” as the show’s logline puts it. He finds himself in unfamiliar territory when his daughters (Lang and Ryan) are accepted at an elite private school in Beverly Hills. When his antics turn the family into outcasts, he decides to put a shirt on and stifle his true self in order to fit in.
