Needless to say, remaking one of the greatest films of all time by arguably the greatest filmmaker of all time for an American crowd is a recipe for probable cinematic sacrilege. Add to this the fact that the American doing the remaking happens to be a director who’s already famously desecrated one classic of Asian cinema, and the prospects for Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest” appear rather dim from the outset. Fortunately, while his rehash of “Oldboy” was the work of a man clearly indifferent to his product, his reinterpretation of “High and Low” indicates a man who knew what made the original work, and what else could benefit from a modern update.

Director Spike Lee says Highest 2 Lowestwill be his last collaboration with Denzel Washington. The film, which just screened at Cannes, is a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa's High and Low. Lee's version takes things out of Japan and into New York City, where a music mogul becomes the target of a ransom plot. In addition to Washington,Highest 2 Lowest features Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, A$AP Rocky, and Aubrey Joseph. It will release theatrically on August 22 and then hit Apple TV+ on September 5.

Per Deadline, Lee spoke about his long-term collaboration with Washington. The filmmaker remarked how he could not believe that the pair's previous collaboration was so long ago. “No fuck ups today!” the director quipped, kicking off his press conference to Highest 2 Lowest, his electrifying new crime thriller that premiered out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival. The director was referencing his last time in Cannes, when he was president of the 74th Cannes jury, and accidently announced the winner of the Palme d’Or ahead of schedule at the festival’s closing ceremony.

But Cannes has welcomed him back. Highest 2 Lowest was greeted with a wildly enthusiastic response following its unveiling at the Palais on Monday night. Spike Lee threw some shade at Donald Trump during the Cannes Film Festival press conference for his latest joint “Highest 2 Lowest.” When asked about if social media has jeopardized morals in America, Lee replied: “I don’t know how much we can talk about American values considering who is the president.”

He continued: “My wife said, ‘Spike, be very careful what you say!’ But here’s the thing, I don’t think we can condemn social media. People say the same thing about film or whatever. So I’m not going to demonize the form.”

The 70-year-old two-time Oscar winner and the 36-year-old rapper attended the premiere of their movie Highest 2 Lowest on Monday (May 19) held at Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France.

Fellow cast members in attendance included Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, Aubrey Joseph, and Wendell Pierce along with director Spike Lee.

Joining Jeffrey on the red carpet were his kids Elijah and Juno while Spike had the support of wife Tonya Lewis Lee and their kids Satchel and Jackson.

There’s enormous risk in remaking a movie like “High and Low.” Japanese master Akira Kurosawa set the bar high with his 1963 take on a kidnapping that brings an ambitious businessman to his knees — which means, even in the hands of such a visionary director as Spike Lee, you can’t help worrying how low a modern, New York-set update might go.

For three-quarters of its running time, Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest” glides along far better than skeptics might have expected (it’s night and day with his sordid U.S. adaptation of “Old Boy”). And then comes a scene for which there is no equivalent in Kurosawa’s version — a face-off between Denzel Washington and A$AP Rocky as the man with the nerve to ransom his son — and the movie rockets into a sublime new stratosphere, delivering an electrifying last act that’s at once original and deeply personal.

Yet again a filmmaker has gone to the throne of Japanese giant Akira Kurosawa for inspiration. Among the lauded director’s films Hollywood has turned into English-language adaptations are Seven Samurai, which became The Magnificent Seven twice (including once with Denzel Washington); Rashomon, which became Paul Newman’s The Outrage; Ikiru, remade a few years ago as Living; Yojimbo, which led to an uncredited inspiration for A Fistful of Dollars; and 1958’s Hidden Fortress, unquestionably an inspiration for George Lucas and Star Wars.

Denzel Washington got a career-defining surprise at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival when he was awarded an honorary Palme d’Or at the world premiere of his latest film, Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest.” The two-time Oscar winner was already having a historic festival, considering this is the first time Washington has attended Cannes in his 50-year acting career.

Ahead of the screening of Lee’s latest movie, Cannes festival director Thierry Fremaux introduced a montage of Washington’s films — including “Malcolm X” and “Mo Better Blues,” both directed by Lee — as well as his Oscar-winning performances in “Glory” and “Training Day.” Lee then presented the actor-director with the honorary Palme d’Or.

The unannounced honor came after a reel of Washington’s stellar career was shown in the Palais. The bombshell announcement was made by festival chief Thierry Frémaux as he addressed the crowd. “It’s a very special day,” he said. “Denzel, because you are here, we want to make something special for you … it’s a kind of way for us to tell you our adoration, what you have done in cinema. Nobody knows about that except Spike Lee, who wrote me to do that.”

Marvel's Cloak & Dagger is a forgotten gem in the MCU, with impressive ties to the greater universe and a unique New Orleans setting. The show features a corrupt megacorporation, Roxxon, which has been a background Easter egg in other MCU projects. Cloak & Dagger balances real-world issues and culture with superheroics, providing a more grounded and dramatic take on the genre.

Fives after its premiere, Marvel's Cloak & Dagger is still worth watching despite being one of the McU's most forgotten shows. Featuring an impressive amount of ties to the greater MCU compared to most Marvel shows, 2018's Cloak & Dagger also made great use of its unique New Orleans setting while also having strong dynamics between Tyrone Johnson's Cloak (Aubrey Joseph) and Tandy Bowwn's Dagger (Olivia Holt).

Exclusive: Abbey Lee and Christopher Abbott are attached to lead Fear is the Rider, a chase thriller from BAFTA-nominated director John Michael McDonagh that The Exchange is introducing to international buyers at the 2022 virtual EFM.

Fear is the Rider is based on Kenneth Cook’s (Wake in Fright) acclaimed novel of the same name. It tells the story of John Shaw (Abbott), a photojournalist who arrives in Australia trying to recover from his experiences reporting on the Vietnam War. After meeting a young woman (Lee) in a small-town bar, he decides to detour into the Outback to photograph cave paintings.

Out there, under the baking sun, people can die within hours. But the elements are not the most hazardous thing in the bush, and Shaw and his mysterious companion soon find themselves caught up in an unrelenting fight for survival.

Exclusive: Reem Kherici is directing and starring in Chien et Chat (Cat and Dog), a live-action animated hybrid film currently in production in Montreal, which she also wrote.

Cat and Dog follows the owner of an Internet-famous cat and an international jewel thief whose dog has swallowed a ruby as the animals escape their cages in the airport. Together, the unlikely duo must work together to recover their prized pets.

Gaumont’s Sidonie Dumas is producing with Eric Altmayer for Mandarin Productions. Netflix has taken Latin American rights to the film, with Gaumont looking to release it in French theaters in December of 2023.

Kherici is best known for the 2017 romantic drama Jour J (Wedding Unplanned), which also had her writing, directing and starring. She first established herself as a multi-hyphenate with the 2013 debut feature Paris à tout prix, which was distributed in over 50 countries.

Kherici is represented by Zero Gravity Management and A3 Artists Agency.

While Tiffany Boone studied Kerry Washington extensively on the set of “Little Fires Everywhere” to prepare for playing the younger version of her character, Mia, she didn’t want it to match exactly. After all, Boone was playing Mia 16 years younger, before she built up the tough exterior we see from Washington’s performance in the show’s present day. “I didn’t wanna do an impersonation of her,” Boone says in an exclusive new interview with Gold Derby. “I wanted to make it feel like this is the same person, just 16 years before.” Watch the full video interview with Boone above.

Freeform axed the McU show after its second season last week, causing much outcry from fans of the teen-oriented superhero series. While traditional Marvel TV is drying up, Marvel Studios is still forging ahead with its own small screen projects on Disney Plus and this, we’re told, could mean there’s a future for Cloak and Dagger, after all.

From where I’m sitting, the Marvel TV landscape seems to be in a bit of a transition phase. For the most part, we’d seen various properties based on its comic book universe scattered across Netflix, Hulu, ABC, FX and Freeform in recent years, with a more McU-focused shift coming to Disney Plus. And as you’ve no doubt noticed, the casualties from the old guard have really stacked up.

With all the big changes happening at Marvel recently like Kevin Feige being made Chief Creative Officer over the whole universe and Jeph Loeb leaving Marvel TV, it’s not surprising that the series got canceled.

Freeform is pumping the brakes on Tandy and Tyrone’s vigilante road trip, cancelling Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger after just two seasons, according to our sister site Deadline.
