Needless to say, remaking one of the greatest films of all time by arguably the greatest filmmaker of all time for an American crowd is a recipe for probable cinematic sacrilege. Add to this the fact that the American doing the remaking happens to be a director who’s already famously desecrated one classic of Asian cinema, and the prospects for Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest” appear rather dim from the outset. Fortunately, while his rehash of “Oldboy” was the work of a man clearly indifferent to his product, his reinterpretation of “High and Low” indicates a man who knew what made the original work, and what else could benefit from a modern update.
In a sense, “Highest 2 Lowest” can very well describe the trajectory of Lee’s entire career—a man who, over the course of his storied history, has made unimpeachable classics in between baffling misfires—but through it all,...

Spike Lee’s joints are known for their sweeping coverage of New York City, in particular Brooklyn, and even more specifically Bed-Stuy––hardly ever the luxurious, Gotham-tinged, cobble-stoned streets of Dumbo. Outside a short doc made for the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce in 2016, Lee hasn’t set a film in Dumbo since his 1986 debut She’s Gotta Have It. He’s returned nearly 40 years later for Highest 2 Lowest, his spin on Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, a film itself adapted from Evan Hunter’s novel King’s Ransom.
“Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’”––the opening theme to Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!––comes in gently with trembling violins and strong vocals while drone shots float through Dumbo at dawn like the ghosts of artists never discovered. As Gordon MacRae bursts the song open with his bellowing voice, the morning breaks, the energy livens, and drones pick up images of Manhattan’s Financial District,...

Director Spike Lee says Highest 2 Lowestwill be his last collaboration with Denzel Washington. The film, which just screened at Cannes, is a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa's High and Low. Lee's version takes things out of Japan and into New York City, where a music mogul becomes the target of a ransom plot. In addition to Washington,Highest 2 Lowest features Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, A$AP Rocky, and Aubrey Joseph. It will release theatrically on August 22 and then hit Apple TV+ on September 5.
Per Deadline, Lee spoke about his long-term collaboration with Washington. The filmmaker remarked how he could not believe that the pair's previous collaboration was so long ago. When they got to filming Highest 2 Lowest, however, Lee and Washington "didn't miss a step." Given Washington's retirement comments, Lee thinks that "this is it" as Highest 2 Lowest could betheir final film together. Check out the full quote from...

A new Spike Lee movie is still a calendar-clearing event; in the near 30 years since She’s Gotta Have It helped kickstart the Amerindie boom and introduced the world to a brash, trash-talking auteur from Brooklyn, he’s given us era-defining statements and eccentric sidebars, epic biopics and intimate performance movies, blockbusters and docs, highs and lows. His place in the canon is assured. It’s still always a dice roll, of course, and you never know which Spike you’re going to get once the lights go down — the crank,...

Spike Lee got off to a strong start.
“No fuck ups today!” the director quipped, kicking off his press conference to Highest 2 Lowest, his electrifying new crime thriller that premiered out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival. The director was referencing his last time in Cannes, when he was president of the 74th Cannes jury, and accidently announced the winner of the Palme d’Or ahead of schedule at the festival’s closing ceremony.
But Cannes has welcomed him back. Highest 2 Lowest was greeted with a wildly enthusiastic response following its unveiling at the Palais on Monday night. The Cannes festival surprised Highest 2 Lowest star Denzel Washington, in town for only a few hours in between Broadway performances of Othello, presenting the two-time Oscar winner, and cinema legend, with an honorary Palme d’Or for his life’s work.

Spike Lee threw some shade at Donald Trump during the Cannes Film Festival press conference for his latest joint “Highest 2 Lowest.” When asked about if social media has jeopardized morals in America, Lee replied: “I don’t know how much we can talk about American values considering who is the president.”
He continued: “My wife said, ‘Spike, be very careful what you say!’ But here’s the thing, I don’t think we can condemn social media. People say the same thing about film or whatever. So I’m not going to demonize the form.”
Later on, when asked more directly about Trump’s proposed tariffs on foreign-made films, Lee said he “doesn’t have the answer for that” but acknowledged that “people are hurting.”
“No one’s working,” Lee said. “The guy just said he wanted to put a tariff on every film that shot… I don’t...

Spike Lee and Denzel Washington helped make Cannes mo’ better Monday night with the gala premiere of Highest 2 Lowest.
Washington, currently playing Othello in a 15-week run on Broadway, flew to France for the evening premiere, his first collaboration with Lee since 2006’s Inside Man. It was a short visit. Denzel Washington, Spike Lee and A$AP Rocky brought New York City to Cannes for the world premiere of their neo-noir crime thriller “Highest 2 Lowest,” which earned a five and a half-minute standing ovation. Rihanna also drew plenty of attention as she sat with A$AP Rocky during the screening.
Lee, who always dons a talked-about red carpet look, wore an orange and blue-striped suit and jacket and matching hat to the premiere as an homage to his beloved New York Knicks. Washington, in a more traditional suit, jacket and tie, spent extra time on the Croisette, slapping hands with fans like a professional athlete on game day.
Before the premiere, Lee presented Washington with an honorary Palme d’Or, calling the actor “my brother from another mother.”

Spike Lee has had a checkered history in Cannes, bringing down the house with “Do the Right Thing” in 1989 but losing the Palme d’Or to Steven Soderbergh’s “Sex, Lies and Videotape” and being shut out of that year’s awards entirely. He was famously unhappy about that, and didn’t return for another decade until 1999’s “Summer of Sam,” and then waited almost 20 years before coming back with “BlacKkKlansman,” which won him the Grand Prix behind Palme winner “Shoplifters.”
Since then, he’s headed the jury once, and on Monday night he returned in an out-of-competition slot with “Highest 2 Lowest,” his adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime drama “High and Low.”
You could argue that Lee warrants a spot in competition at the festival, but “Highest 2 Lowest” doesn’t feel like the kind of Spike Lee joint that has defined him as a filmmaker. While the...

A single card credit at the end of Spike Lee’s hugely entertaining crime thriller Highest 2 Lowest reads: “Inspired by the master, Akira Kurosawa.” That tribute feels not in the least like someone paying lip service. Reinterpreting the giant of Japanese cinema’s 1963 classic, High and Low, a tense police procedural with a sharp dissection of social class structures, Lee and screenwriter Alan Fox handle the material with the utmost care and respect. At the same time, they transpose the narrative spine to an environment Lee knows intimately, allowing the director to make the film his own, with wit, high style and kinetic energy to burn.
Highest 2 Lowest is Lee’s first feature set and shot in New York since 2012’s Red Hook Summer, and that absence seems to have reignited his love for the city as a visual playground in ways that vibrate throughout.

Titled like a sequel, plotted like a remake, and shot with enough of its own singular verve to ensure that most people never think of it as either of those things, Spike Lee’s deliriously entertaining — if jarringly upbeat — “Highest 2 Lowest” modernizes the post-war anxieties of Akira Kurosawa’s “High and Low” for the age of parasocial relationships.

There’s enormous risk in remaking a movie like “High and Low.” Japanese master Akira Kurosawa set the bar high with his 1963 take on a kidnapping that brings an ambitious businessman to his knees — which means, even in the hands of such a visionary director as Spike Lee, you can’t help worrying how low a modern, New York-set update might go.
For three-quarters of its running time, Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest” glides along far better than skeptics might have expected (it’s night and day with his sordid U.S. adaptation of “Old Boy”). And then comes a scene for which there is no equivalent in Kurosawa’s version — a face-off between Denzel Washington and A$AP Rocky as the man with the nerve to ransom his son — and the movie rockets into a sublime new stratosphere, delivering an electrifying last act that’s at once original and deeply personal.

Yet again a filmmaker has gone to the throne of Japanese giant Akira Kurosawa for inspiration. Among the lauded director’s films Hollywood has turned into English-language adaptations are Seven Samurai, which became The Magnificent Seven twice (including once with Denzel Washington); Rashomon, which became Paul Newman’s The Outrage; Ikiru, remade a few years ago as Living; Yojimbo, which led to an uncredited inspiration for A Fistful of Dollars; and 1958’s Hidden Fortress, unquestionably an inspiration for George Lucas and Star Wars.
Now chalk up another one with Spike Lee’s new take on Kurosawa’s 1963 drama High and Low, in which Toshiro Mifune played a shoemaker executive who is torn between paying the ransom to his chauffeur’s son’s kidnapper after the criminal nabbed him by mistake instead of the executive’s son, who was safe. Denzel Washington got a career-defining surprise at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival when he was awarded an honorary Palme d’Or at the world premiere of his latest film, Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest.” The two-time Oscar winner was already having a historic festival, considering this is the first time Washington has attended Cannes in his 50-year acting career.
Ahead of the screening of Lee’s latest movie, Cannes festival director Thierry Fremaux introduced a montage of Washington’s films — including “Malcolm X” and “Mo Better Blues,” both directed by Lee — as well as his Oscar-winning performances in “Glory” and “Training Day.” Lee then presented the actor-director with the honorary Palme d’Or.
Lee was on stage for the special moment and handed off the Palme d’O trophy to Denzel while calling the actor “my brother from another mother.” Washington said that the honor was a complete surprise.

The battle between light and dark sometimes causes a shadow, like in Hulu's Cloak and Dagger. In the Marvel Comics Freeform superhero series, a twist of fate brings together two teenagers from very different backgrounds in present-day New Orleans. The Cloak and Dagger original comic series had a strong focus on the war on drugs. Much like The Penquin, Cloak and Dagger is a more gritty street-level tale. In a show about superpowers, it manages to address some pretty disturbing themes, including teen homelessness and drug use. A chance encounter sees Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph) crossing paths with Tandy (Olivia Holt) after the pair are both involved in a car accident linked to the Roxxon Oil Company, which broadly ties Cloak and Dagger to other Marvel properties.

Aubrey Joseph delivers a phenomenal performance as Quawntay, impressing Gibson and making the movie an independent gem worth watching.

Ex-cons speaking out and telling their stories seems to be a hot trend on TV these days. Just look at Gypsy Rose Blanchard, whose backstory is surely to become a big-budget feature film in the years to come. On that note, there are a number of exciting feature films coming to Peacock in February, one of which is based on the writings of Quawntay "Bosco" Adams, a real-life ex-con who escaped from prison, was caught and returned to his cell, and has since served his time and shares his story with the world as a free man. Sure, Bosco has a more contained, "TV movie" vibe to it, but it's a gripping prison journey that reignites the cinematic subgenre thanks to veterans like Tyrese Gibson, Thomas Jane, and Vivica A. Fox returning to action to grace the screen.

"Humans are the greatest weakness in any security system." Peacock has revealed an official trailer for a film called Bosco, a prison escape thriller based on a true story. Finally something that might just live up to the classic Escape from Alcatraz! Hopefully. Based on the true story of Quawntay "Bosco" Adams, who also produced the film. Sentenced to 35 years for attempted possession of marijuana, Adams miraculously escaped from a Federal maximum-security prison in 2006 while under 24-hour surveillance in solitary with the help of a woman he met through a lonely-hearts ad. This features a compelling cast including Aubrey Joseph as "Bosco", Nikki Blonsky as "Tammy", Tyrese Gibson as "Tootie", Vivica A. Fox as "Willa", Theo Rossi as "Ramos", and Thomas Jane as "Hunt". Bosco will feature original music from leading hip-hop artists, including Snoop Dogg, French Montana, The Game, Ddg, & more. Looks solid though probably not a new prison escape classic.

Marvel's Cloak & Dagger is a forgotten gem in the MCU, with impressive ties to the greater universe and a unique New Orleans setting. The show features a corrupt megacorporation, Roxxon, which has been a background Easter egg in other MCU projects. Cloak & Dagger balances real-world issues and culture with superheroics, providing a more grounded and dramatic take on the genre.
Fives after its premiere, Marvel's Cloak & Dagger is still worth watching despite being one of the McU's most forgotten shows. Featuring an impressive amount of ties to the greater MCU compared to most Marvel shows, 2018's Cloak & Dagger also made great use of its unique New Orleans setting while also having strong dynamics between Tyrone Johnson's Cloak (Aubrey Joseph) and Tandy Bowwn's Dagger (Olivia Holt).

It started with a simple question: Why aren’t there more films about Black superheroes? For director Gina Prince-Bythewood, that query opened her journey into directing “The Woman King” and entering the highly rarefied space of being a Black female filmmaker making a big-budget blockbuster that centered on a Black story with a Black woman as its star. Superheroic to boot.
“I’ve always seen myself here, but the industry has not seen me here,” Prince-Bythewood said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “[My whole family] loves Marvel movies. We go to all of them, and it was maybe two years before ‘Black Panther’ came out, and my older son said to me, ‘Why isn’t there a Black superhero?’ And at that moment I was like, ‘I keep saying I would love to do that for you, so let me stop saying I would love it, and do that.’ So what steps do I need to take?...

While Tiffany Boone studied Kerry Washington extensively on the set of “Little Fires Everywhere” to prepare for playing the younger version of her character, Mia, she didn’t want it to match exactly. After all, Boone was playing Mia 16 years younger, before she built up the tough exterior we see from Washington’s performance in the show’s present day. “I didn’t wanna do an impersonation of her,” Boone says in an exclusive new interview with Gold Derby. “I wanted to make it feel like this is the same person, just 16 years before.” Watch the full video interview with Boone above.

“It really did start with the mannerisms and the physicality that Kerry was creating for the character I watched her on-set for a few weeks, like a shadow pretty much,” Boone discusses, of her process to prepare for playing young Mia.

(The following story contains spoilers from the third season of “Marvel’s The Runaways”)
Marvel TV fans mourning the end of Freeform’s “Cloak & Dagger” got to see Tandy (Olivia Holt) and Ty (Aubrey Joseph) one more time during the final season of “Runaways.”
“It was actually something that we had wanted to do from the beginning,” Joshua Schwartz, who serves as showrunner alongside Stephanie Savage, told TheWrap. “‘Cloak & Dagger’ and ‘Runaways’ are so tied together in the comics. We always felt like it would be a really natural storyline to have them come visit La, as they do in the comic.”
The duo appears at the very end of the seventh episode, following Nico’s (Lyrica Okano) attempt to return to the Dark Dimension to recuse Alex (Rhenzy Feliz). They nearly come to blows when Nico suspects them to be henchman for Morgan le Fey (Elizabeth Hurley...

Runaways Season 3 is weird, messy fun, but it’s also a bittersweet reminder of what Marvel’s television universe could have been.

There’s a certain funereal atmosphere surrounding the impending release of the third season of Marvel’s Runaways. Season 3 has already been announced as the series’ last, as Marvel’s original television programming arm is slowly being smothered in the name of corporate synergy.
The consolidation of the Marvel brand—and all iterations of the McU as we understand it, whether on the big screen or the small—underneath the umbrella of Disney+ isn’t unexpected. In fact, it makes a lot of sense, allowing viewers a one-stop shop for all their superhero programming needs.
But it’s also deeply unfortunate, since one of the primary reasons Marvel’s television universe was so interesting was because it was dispersed across a variety of platforms, which...

Yet another Marvel Television production came to an end recently with the cancellation of Cloak & Dagger. Freeform axed the McU show after its second season last week, causing much outcry from fans of the teen-oriented superhero series. While traditional Marvel TV is drying up, Marvel Studios is still forging ahead with its own small screen projects on Disney Plus and this, we’re told, could mean there’s a future for Cloak and Dagger, after all.

From where I’m sitting, the Marvel TV landscape seems to be in a bit of a transition phase. For the most part, we’d seen various properties based on its comic book universe scattered across Netflix, Hulu, ABC, FX and Freeform in recent years, with a more McU-focused shift coming to Disney Plus. And as you’ve no doubt noticed, the casualties from the old guard have really stacked up.
The latest series sent packing is that of Cloak & Dagger, which called the aforementioned Freeform network its home. For two seasons, it dazzled a younger generation of True Believers, but I guess they’ll need to find their fix elsewhere as of now.
Considering how it’s been five months since the last episode aired and no word of a renewal came down, you might have seen this coming. It’s also worth mentioning how ratings dropped nearly 40% during the second season,...

Freeform has decided to cancel Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger series and it will not be back for a third season.
