Michael Caton-Jones & Ena Sendijarević Projects Head To Les Arcs Coproduction Village

The Les Arcs Film Festival has unveiled the 18 European film projects selected for its Les Arcs Coproduction, running from December 16 to 19 within the framework of the Alpine event’s 15th edition.

The selection, chosen from 269 submitted projects hailing from 15 different countries, has achieved gender parity in terms of the directors involved, even though only 36% applications of the projects submitted were directed by women.

Ten of projects are first fiction feature projects, five are second features and 3 by more established filmmakers, including Michael Caton-Jones and Ena Sendijarević, whose latest film Sweet Dreams is the Netherlands’s Best International Feature Film entry this year.

The Netherlands is Les Arcs Film Festival’s country focus this year and the Coproduction village will welcome three projects from the territory.

Lithuanian director Egle Vertelytė’s culinary comedy Tasty, which won the Screen International Best Pitch Award at Tallinn’s Baltic Event co-production market in 2020, has wrapped production after a 25-day shoot in Vilnius.

The screenplay by Vertelytė and Irena Kunevicuite centres on two women chefs from a small canteen in Kaunas whose close friendship is put to the test when they enter into a televised cooking competition and a new love interest threatens to tear them apart.

Poland, Ukraine projects triumph at 2022 Connecting Cottbus

Connecting Cottbus took place November 9-11.

Polish writer-director Sonja Orlewicz-Zakrzewska’s debut feature Dolphin was voted as the best pitch at the 24th edition of the East-West Co-Production Market Connecting Cottbus, which took place during FilmFestival Cottbus.

Orlewicz-Zakrzewska and her producer Magdalena Sztorc of Warsaw-based Before My Eyes also received the Croatian Audiovisual Centre’s Project Development Award of € 5,000 toward the project’s further development.

European Work in Progress Cologne goes ahead as physical event

German project development event will showcase 28 projects from 34 countries.

The third edition of the European Work in Progress Cologne (Ewip) will unfold as a physical event in spite of the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, its organisers have announced.

Running October 5 to 7 within the framework of the 30th Cologne Film Festival, the meeting will showcase 28 projects from 34 countries.

“The experiences in Cannes and other industry events in this corona year have shown that the direct exchange of people, despite numerous digital communication possibilities, cannot be replaced by anything,” commented Torsten Frehse, a board member of German independent distributors’ association Ag Verleih.

Sergey Dvortsevoy’s Russian drama Ayka wins best film.

Russian director Sergey Dvortsevoy’s Ayka, about a young woman attemping to survive after abandoning her baby in Moscow, was the big winner at Germany’s Filmfestival Cottbus (Nov 6-11), taking home the best film prize in the feature competition as well as prize of the ecumenical jury.

Ayka, which is Dvortsevoy’s second feature, premiered in competition at Cannes earlier this year and is Kazakhstan’s entry for the best foreign- language film Oscar category. The Match Factory is handling international sales.
