‘One-Punch Man’ Author Was Terrified of His Manga Getting an Anime Adaptation
Image
The third season of the wildly popular One-Punch Man is right around the corner. The series is returning after six years, and the entire anime industry has been waiting for it to finally make a comeback because of the fame and recognition that the anime adaptation of One’s masterpiece has received ever since it was first released way back in 2015.

One-Punch Man is one of the very few anime series that managed to make the anime industry mainstream. The global popularity and the love that the series has received are reflected even today and continue to inspire others. However, when One first got the news that his manga was being adapted into an anime series, he was extremely terrified.

In fact, he once revealed that he was not sure whether the anime adaptation of One-Punch Man would work out or not. And now the anime has proven itself to...

One Piece: 5 Major Voice Actors Who Passed Away Proving Oda Can No Longer Drag the Story for Years
Image
There are very few stories in the entertainment industry that have stretched out as long as Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece, which started way back in 1997. The series has been going on for almost 30 years with the anime starting in 1999. However, even after going on for so long, it looks like the story will be dragged for a few more years before it reaches the finish line.

While fans are happy to get a continuous dose of One Piece, dragging the series for almost 30 years might not have worked so well for the creators. In fact, there are a few of them who have sadly passed away before even finding out the conclusion of the series. Most of these are voice actors who have offered their voices for the characters from One Piece.

'We Showed a Secret Preview': Studio Ghibli President Reveals the Origins of 'Grave of the Fireflies'
Image
In 1988, Studio Ghibli released Grave of the Fireflies -- a heartbreaking war film set during WWII in Japan. Recently, Studio Ghibli president and producer Toshio Suzuki recounted when his team showcased the movie to one of Japan's foremost critics, a moment he now looks back on as one of the "happiest" times of his life.

Per Oricon and PR Times, Studio Ghibli recently unveiled two special teaser visuals for an event titled "Takahata Isao Exhibition: The Man Who Planted Japanese Animation." Starting June 27, this exhibition will commemorate Isao Takahata's prolific animation career, which produced renowned works like Anne of Green Gables (1979), Only Yesterday (1991), Pom Poko (1994), The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2013) and many others. In addition to Heidi from Heidi, Girl of the Alps (1974), one of the teasers depicts a heartwarming visual of Setsuko and Seita, the young protagonists of Grave of the Fireflies. ‘Sakamoto Days’ Already Has the Recipe to Make Cour 2 Exponentially Better
Image
Sakamoto Days anime aired the season finale last week, leaving fans divided. While some were content with the series, others were left disappointed. It wasn’t much of a finale as some pointed out. What we do know is that the first season remains a mxied bag for the most part.

Truly, it was a seesaw of expectations, and Tms fumbled majorly. From animation to visuals, it was pretty rustic compared to the manga’s well-detailed art. To add to that, the makers are returning with Cour 2 in July 2025, but it seems like the studio has a plan up its sleeve.

In other words, the series has a secret sauce for the upcoming second season, which might overturn the first season’s criticism. It might potentially undo all the mistakes if the makers choose to address the problems. The pitfalls are a huge hindrance,...

“I can no longer stop him”: Studio Ghibli Founder Confirms Hayao Miyazaki Isn’t Done Yet and I’m Confused What to Feel
Image
Hayao Miyazaki has been on the verge of retirement plenty of times already. The Studio Ghibli director first announced his retirement in 1997 and three more times after that over the course of two decades. But as we all know, none of these attempts have been successful.

Everytime, the creator has gone back to the drawing board and come up with more and more creative ideas. Fans expected that after The Boy and the Heron, Miyazaki’s latest film, he would finally be ready to retire. But he is nowhere near done yet because the creator’s head is already swarming with ideas.

Studio Ghibli's Rumored Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Sequel Gets Unfortunate Update
Image
Fans of Hayao Miyazaki's 1984 film Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind have been whispering about a possible sequel for some time. However, newly-surfaced comments from the renowned director and his industry colleague, Hideaki Anno (Neon GenesisEvangelion), suggest that a Nausicaa continuation is still a long way off, if it's ever coming at all.

As reported by French anime blogger Catsuka, Hayao Miyazaki and Anno, who famously served as a key animator for Nausicaa, recently met together at Miyazaki's "Butaya" office in Tokyo. On X (formerly Twitter), Studio Khara (Rebuild of Evangelion films) featured a photo from this meetup, which depicts Anno beside a clean-shaven Miyazaki. According to Catsuka, Anno made a reference to the potential Nausicaa sequel that Ghibli fans began speculating about back in 2023, although not a good one for fans still hoping to see a follow-up movie someday. "He's [Anno] happy to see Miyazaki in good health,...

“Ghibli’s characters would die instantly”: Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli Has 1 Rule to Preserve Their Movies Forever That Is Disney’s Worst Nightmare
Image
Studio Ghibli and Disney are two of the most influential animation studios in history, but their worldviews are as disparate as night and day. Disney has built a global empire by taking its beloved characters and turning them into billion-dollar franchises, whereas Studio Ghibli has deliberately shied away from over-commercialism.

This stark contrast is no accident as Ghibli’s reluctance to mass merchandise is a deliberate choice to preserve the artistic integrity of its films even at the cost of lost profit. In a recent interview, Toshio Suzuki, co-founder and former producer at Ghibli, disclosed some of the lesser-known studio regulations that will blow your mind.

In an interview with Yahoo! News, Studio Ghibli’s co-founder and former producer Toshio Suzuki opened up about the studio’s approach to limit Ghibli’s beloved characters from being over-commercialized.

Sakamoto Days Gets Rightfully Bashed for Its Anime, but Don’t Forget How Well It Redeemed MCU’s Cheap ‘Fat Thor’ Joke
Image
Fat isn’t always funny as it can be edgy, and Sakamoto Days is a perfect example of that. The Hitman series is a perfect blend of comedy, action, and romance, but what makes it so unique and special is the protagonist himself. He protects, attacks, and gets everyone’s back, but there’s another upside to it.

It isn’t romance that makes Yuto Suzuki’s series offbeat; it is his conceptualization of a fat assassin. The beloved Assassin hitman is a flab and fab character who is edgy in every single way. He may have indeed redeemed Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “big fat joke” and here’s why.

Sakamoto Days overturned the ‘Fat Thor’ joke

One thing that makes Sakamoto Days a class apart from other series is its action, which will often remind viewers of John Wick.

‘Sakamoto Days’ Should Just Give Up at This Point: Solo Leveling Episode 8 Promises Its Best Fight That Is Just Hard to Fathom
Image
Sakamoto Days made quite a splash when its anime was announced, to the point that most fans waited with bated breaths for the adaptation. And when it was announced that Tms would animate it, they weren’t too happy about it and were rather skeptical for the most part.

With Solo Leveling, however, that isn’t the case because of several reasons. Mainly because the anime is hailed for its animation and quality, which is top-tier in every way. But also, A-1 Pictures understood their assignment pretty well, and the upcoming episode is proof of that.

10 Best Historical Manga Series With Strong Lead Characters
Image
Historical manga can still seem fantastical even in a world grounded in realism. Where they lack in the expansive world-building a fantasy series may have, the sense of realism convinces readers that these events truly could have happened. To make sure this happens, of course, one needs a strong protagonist.

Unlike different genres, the protagonist here is functioning during a period in history and, as such, is the reader's eyes and ears within that world. The challenges they may face within a historical manga could be influenced by the time, politics, and social status. The skills these protagonists need are not based on powers or magic, but on wit, communication, and human strength. Not only do these protagonists have to be physically strong, but mentally and emotionally as well.

Film Review: The Most Beautiful (1944) by Akira Kurosawa
Image
After the critical and commercial success of “Sanshiro Sugata”, Akira Kurosawa would continue his work creating propaganda features for the Japanese government. Faced with a system which would not hesitate to censor anything not fitting to its ideology, he gave in and searched for opportunities to inject his own style, vision and themes into whatever subject matter he would find. In his sophomore feature “The Most Beautiful” he would tell the story of a group of female volunteer workers at an optics factory, which can be seen as a “morale booster”, as Kurosawa himself had called his second feature, but also explored themes such as humanity and camaraderie.

“Ghibli’s atmosphere is amazing”: The Anime Industry Must Learn From Studio Ghibli After Eiichiro Oda’s Comment

He couldn’t help but be vocal about this experience, so it must have been significant even for him. 'I Am Retiring': New 5-Day Anime Film Shows Why Studio Ghibli's Hayao Miyazaki Will Never Hang Up His Work Apron
Image
A running gag in the anime community is the fact that, despite announcing his retirement several times over the last few years, Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki is still actively working as a film director. Recently, a group of passionate animation students in France collaborated to make a short explanation about why the critically acclaimed filmmaker refuses to leave the industry.

Per Catsuka, a YouTube Channel called Chrispy Animations recently uploaded "Miyazaki" -- a 15-second "mini-film" that follows the director as he tries to adopt new hobbies such as gardening, cooking and table tennis. However, he cannot seem to master any of them. After a tedious series of failures, the video shows Miyazaki returning to his work with a sigh of resignation. The animation was initially posted on Instagram by Christopher Carter (@chris_carter_art), one of the animators who was involved with the project. Cbr readers can check out...

Koji Suzuki’s Novel ‘Ring’ and Its Forgotten 1995 TV Adaptation
Image
By now everyone should know The Ring (2002) is a remake of Ring (1998). Less known is the fact that Hideo Nakata’s momentous film was not the first on-screen appearance of the vengeful Japanese ghost who spreads her curse by video — in 1995, Fuji Television aired its own take on Sadako Yamamura’s story. Of course, this made-for-tv version has since been overshadowed and, in some circles, dismissed. Yet for all its many odd decisions, Chisui Takigawa and Jōji Iida’s collaboration still follows its source material a good deal more closely than subsequent films, particularly where its spectral antagonist is concerned.

Those new to Ring ’95 (also known as Ring: Kanzenban or Ring: The Complete Edition on home video) will immediately notice its protagonist is not a female divorcée and single mother, but rather a married man. Indeed, like in Kōji Suzuki’s ‘91 novel, the main character here is a male reporter named Kazuyuki Asakawa.

Hayao Miyazaki Gave up His Dream of Making a Sequel to His Most Complex Film for Studio Ghibli’s Most Controversial Movie

Hayao Miyazaki, the iconic filmmaker behind Studio Ghibli, has long been recognized for his meticulous storytelling and profound philosophical themes. From My Neighbor Totoro to Spirited Away, his films have made an everlasting impression on the world of animation.

However, behind the scenes of his filmmaking career, there exists a lesser-known story about how one of his personal ambitions was sacrificed for the sake of a project that would later divide audiences. For instance, Miyazaki wanted to revisit Ponyo, however, the Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki convinced him to pivot to The Wind Rises instead.

Hayao Miyazaki at an event for Ponyo (2008)
Documentary Review: Miyazaki, Spirit of Nature (2024) by Léo Favier (+full movie)
Hayao Miyazaki at an event for Ponyo (2008)
Nature as a theme and as a character sits at the very core of Hayao Miyazaki‘s films, many of which deal with the complex interdependence between humanity and the natural environment (the very meaning of the word ecology) – not to mention their destructive relationship. This is what Léo Favier’s French documentary discusses, although not always as directly, as rigorously or as thoroughly as one might wish.

“Miyazaki, Spirit of Nature”, a made-for-tv documentary, is very standardized in its formal approach to its subject matter: a traditional voiceover tells audiences about the Japanese director, his life and works, while the comments are illustrated with shots and scenes from his numerous movies. At other times, various experts are interviewed on camera to share their thoughts about Miyazaki and the way he approaches nature in his films. The fact that the documentary was first shown at the 2024 Venice Film Festival has...

Sakamoto Days is Gambling With Its Fans’ Feelings With a Risk That Could Save the Anime From Premature Failure

Sakamoto Days isn’t a run-of-the-mill hitman series in any case. With peak action scenes and character development, it outclasses most shonen anime in more ways than one.

It stands as one of the most awaited anime adaptations of 2025. And while the trailer garnered a mixed bag of reviews, fans may have been wrong to throw brickbats for this very reason.

Sakamoto Days: Real Reason Yuto Suzuki Created Shin Gives the ‘Handsome’ Assassin a Level of Depth Even the Anime Will Have Trouble Exploring
Image
Sakamoto Days is jumping on the bandwagon of the new-age anime with its cult popularity. The hitman-themed series has gained traction for its riveting yet unconventional plot and an outlandish protagonist. It is a step away from conventional shonen storytelling.

This also ties well with the mangaka’s positioning of characters in his series. Apart from Taro, Yuto Suzuki’s introduction of Shin as a “handsome” character isn’t merely for aesthetic purposes.

Interestingly, the clairvoyant character has more depth and gravitas to his character. To the point that most readers deem him the second protagonist alongside Taro. But most of all, he is far-fetched from the good-looking second lead stereotype.

Above all, Suzuki went above and beyond in his conception of the deuteragonist. Despite his good looks, he adds substance and depth which is often overlooked. Moreover, this...

All 24 Studio Ghibli Movies Ranked
Image
Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985 by the already seasoned directors Hayao Miyazaki, who'd earned his bones at Toei, and Isao Takahata, who'd worked alongside him. With them was producer Toshio Suzuki, who, as Animage magazine editor, helped Miyazaki introduce "Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind" to Japanese manga fans. While the manga wouldn't be completed until 1994, Suzuki encouraged and assisted Miyazaki in completing the film, which led to the founding of Ghibli.

Of the 24 films Studio Ghibli has produced to date — including "Nausicaa," which may have been a Topcraft and Toei production but wouldn't exist without Ghibli's founders — few are a total failure. Even the controversial Goro Miyazaki films have gleams to them that might shine brighter if he didn't have his father's massive shadow over him. But nor can a list say that they're almost all number ones, because that's not fun to debate. These rankings are subjective but...

'I Think My Brain Is Broken': Studio Ghibli's Hayao Miyazaki Reveals His Greatest Struggle in New Trailer
Image
A new trailer for Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron -- a recently released but still somewhat undiscovered documentary film -- highlights the struggles that revered Studio Ghibli animator and director Hayao Miyazaki underwent in the creation of his latest Academy Award-winning movie, The Boy and the Heron.

Madman Films, an independent film distributor in Australia and New Zealand, posted the new trailer on YouTube. The video highlights the documentary film's insight into Miyazakis personal connection with the film. Miyazaki previously stated that the film was an autobiography of sorts, drawing on his experience growing up in rural Japan after fleeing Tokyo during World War II. The main character of the film, Mahito, is based somewhat on Hayao Miyazaki as he came of age.

‘Godzilla’ Celebrates 70th Anniversary At Tokyo Film Fest With More Than 40 Affiliated Production Staff Present
Image
More than 40 production staff associated with the Godzilla films throughout the years took to the stage at the Tokyo International Film Festival.

The fest held a Godzilla remastered 4K Digital screening and a day-long “Godzilla Fest” to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the original 1954 film.

88-year old Yoshio Suzuki, who worked as an assistant sculptor on the original film, shared his experiences on a panel alongside Oscar-winner Yamazaki Takashi, writer and director of Godzilla Minus One.

The remastered digital version of Godzilla had its world premiere at the Berlinale earlier this year.

Suzuki first worked on the 1954 Godzilla film as an 18-year old.

“I was a first-year sculpture student at Tama Art University and was looking for work as I was short on cash,” said Suzuki. “My classmate, Yoshio Tsuburaya, told me that his uncle was making a movie called Godzilla and suggested that I try to work on that set.

Hideaki Anno’s Studio Ghibli Dream Project Must Cast Emma Watson as Live Action Nausicaä
Image
Hideaki Anno is a prolific director in the anime world. You might know him from his most celebrated creation, the Evangelion franchise. While the director is surfing his successes with one hit film after another, it seems that his one dream production is far from his control.

Anno was previously involved in the animation of Studio Ghibli’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Thus, he has always wanted to remake the movie on his own terms. There have also been rumors that the director wants to create an anime series out of the source material left out during the movie’s creation.

Review: Suzuki Seijun’s Yakuza Action Movie ‘Tattooed Life’ on Radiance Films Blu-ray
Image
Made in the midst of his run of feverish, postmodern genre films at Nikkatsu, Suzuki Seijun’s Tattooed Life is something of a snapshot of the more patient, probing works that the filmmaker made in the 1980s and beyond. It starts, though, at a frenzy, with yakuza hood Tetsu (Takahashi Hideki) set up from the jump by his bosses to carry out a hit on a rival that’s also meant to sacrifice him as a patsy. His brother, the sensitive and soft-spoken artist Kenji (Hananomoto Kotobuki), ends up killing the other yakuza to save Tetsu, forcing both to flee from both rival gangs and their own superiors, who are seeking to tie up loose ends. Further double-crosses follow as the brothers are conned by gangsters and everyday charlatans making false promises of safe passage to Japan’s Manchuria colony.

The brothers do eventually make it to Manchuria, where they...

Tell-All 'Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron' Special Quietly Added to Max
Image
In July 2023, Studio Ghibli's The Boy and the Heron -- a film about a young boy who finds himself lost in a mysterious fantasy world -- premiered in Japanese theaters. Now, Max has released a new documentary film about Heron's seven-year production period and the "intricate dance of friendship and deception" between director Hayao Miyazaki and producer Toshio Suzuki.

Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron, a two-hour feature directed by prolific Ghibli documentarian Kaku Arakawa, is streaming now on Max for viewers in North America. Wtk, an X (Twitter) page dedicated to prominent anime-related releases, spotlighted the film's debut, which arrived without much active promotion on social media or other advertising channels. Earlier this year, Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in France. The film's trailer, along with a brief synopsis, are featured on the festival's official website.

Review: Katô Tai’s ‘Tokijiro: Lone Yakuza’ on Radiance Films Blu-ray
Image
The 18th-century yakuza underworld of Katô Tai’s Tokijiro: Lone Yakuza is defined by stringent codes of honor that inevitably lead to bloodshed. Even men like Tokijiro (Nakamura Kinnosuke), a gambling drifter with no allegiances, are easily caught in the yakuza’s web of violence, as they must often provide a service (typically murdering a rival clan member) in exchange for lodging and a hot meal. Indeed, even as Tokijiro actively strives to live a pacifistic live, death follows him from the opening scene, during which a trio of thieves challenge him at the beach, to the final one, in which he’s forced to head off against a former protégé (Okazaki Jiro) looking to kill him merely to impress the clan he recently joined.

Early on, when Tokijiro refuses a deadly mission given to him by his hosts, this shirking of responsibility still leads to needless death—that of his current protégé,...

Myth and Religion in Yu Yu Hakusho (Part 2)
Image
Yu Yu Hakusho is a staple of shonen anime and a series that has defined the ever-popular tournament arc. It’s also steeped in mythology and religion, most notably Shintoism, Buddhism and Taoism. I’ve already covered the mythological, historical and religious influences through the Saint Beasts arc in Part 1 . Here, I’ll be going through the Dark Tournament arc, which certainly has its fair share of fascinating origins to uncover. Get ready for martial arts, historical figures, folk heroes and a tiny peep at Norse mythology! Drunken Fist Martial Arts Yusuke’s very first fight in the Dark Tournament is against Chu. Team Rokuyukai’s leader fights using a unique style: drinking alcohol until drunk, then using that state to his advantage in a fight. This is based on a real-life fighting style called Zui Quan . Match #1: Ftw Championship Match – Chris Jericho def. Minoru Suzuki The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:

Jericho chopped at Suzuki and Suzuki fired back, not backing down. Suzuki invited Jericho to chop him again and Suzuki laughed it off. Suzuki blistered Jericho’s chest with left handed chops. Jericho served up chops of his own as the fans chanted “Chop forever! Chop forever!” It was a total chop fest as both men stood there and chopped one another. Jericho finally had enough and hit a lariat on Suzuki. Suzuki baited Jericho in and applied a flying arm bar. Jericho was bleeding from the chest! Suzuki grabbed a steel chair and whacked Jericho across the back.

Sensei is unlike any other isekai anime protagonist who wants to take on the role of hero and save the world.

He is not physically overpowered, as his stats are incredibly depressing, having low Hp, mana, and even level, much to Annette’s surprise.

Chainsaw Man Creator's New Anime Catches the Attention of Studio Ghibli President
Image
The Look Back anime movie continues to dominate the Japanese box office since its release on June 10, 2024. Now, the head of Studio Ghibli and producer of films such as Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and The Boy and the Heron, has weighed in on the critically acclaimed anime movie based on the one-shot story by Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of Chainsaw Man.

According to Comic Natalie via Crunchyroll, Toshio Suzuki, the chairman and co-founder of Studio Ghibli, commented on the Look Back animated movie currently playing in Japan. Suzuki said, "For whom is the work for? The answer lies within the film." While intentionally vague, Suzuki is acknowledging the creator-driven spirit of the film, as Look Back follows two young girls on their journey to become manga artists. Of course, with this being the work of Fujimoto, things are never as straightforward as they may seem.

Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind Set The Stage For Decades Of Stunning Studio Ghibli Anime
Image
Studio Ghibli is often considered synonymous with filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, director of the studio's best movies. Many would argue Miyazaki's works are some of the best animated movies ever, so it's natural that he casts a shadow over the studio he helped build.

However, the studio actually has multiple founders: the late director Isao Takahata, producer (and current studio chairman) Toshio Suzuki, and Yasuyoshi Tokuma. The latter's company Tokuma Shoten offered the foundation for Ghibli and was the studio's parent company from 1985 to 2005.

Miyazaki was already a prolific animator pre-Ghibli and acquainted with Suzuki and Takahata. The three first made a movie together in 1984: "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind." Miyazaki directed, Takahata produced, and Suzuki was the one who first connected Miyazaki with Tokuma Shoten. As a bonus, composer Joe Hisaishi (who went on to be Ghibli's in-house composer) also scored "Nausicaä."
