Exclusive: Range Media Partners has signed director Julie Taymor, who has worked across multiple mediums including film, television, theater, and opera throughout her esteemed career. Best known for directing the 2002 film Frida starring Salma Hayek, which won two Academy Awards and was nominated for an additional four, including a nomination for Taymor for penning the lyrics to the film’s original song, Burn It Blue” She was also the first woman in theatrical history to win Best Direction of a Musical at The Tony Awards for her adaption of The Lion King in 1998.

Peter Pan, Alice In Wonderland, Angelina Jolie and Kallus from Star Wars: Rebels sounds like a cracking Sunday afternoon to me… It has been a while since I got to see a decent movie based around the whole Peter Pan tale. I always thought 2003s Peter Pan with Jason Isaacs as Hook was far and away the best version, well outside of Hook obviously. Whenever a new film comes round, be it animated or live action, I am always keen to see how this one is going to play out and how they are going to make it fresh, original and different enough to warrant my attention.

Director Julie Taymor is officially slated to add another film to her increasingly impressive and highly overlooked oeuvre. From Deadline, Taymor is attached to direct “Gun Love,” which has been adapted by screenwriter Marissa Kate Goodhill from Jennifer Clement’s novel of the same title.

Exclusive: Julie Taymor is attached to direct Gun Love, an adaptation of the Jennifer Clement novel. Babylon Berlin‘s Liv Lisa Fries is attached to play the role of Margot in the ensemble cast. Marissa Kate Goodhill (Come Away) wrote the script.

Nick Wechsler and Chockstone Pictures partners Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz are producing the film, alongside Lynn Hendee and Taymor. Wechsler and the Schwartzes optioned the novel in 2019.

The drama follows a young girl raised in a car outside a Florida trailer park, whose life is violently disrupted when her pure-hearted mother falls under the spell of a gun-running bad boy. The novel drew acclaim when it was published in 2019.

Taymor is coming off The Glorias, the drama about the life of Gloria Steinem that stars Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander, Janelle Monáe and Bette Midler. She directed Frida and won a Tony for The Lion King on Broadway among her illustrious credits.

I say “children’s,” not “family,” because it’s unlikely anyone older than 12 will find much magic in this supremely surface-level story. It’s strange then that Chapman and scribe Marissa Kate Goodhill spend so much time lingering on the dark world of adults: gambling, debt collection, alcoholism, even child death. Director Brenda Chapman’s latest family film “Come Away” is a fairy tale that imagines a new spin on classic fairytales–what if Peter Pan and Alice from “Alice in Wonderland” were brother and sister before they ventured off on their own journeys? But it also switches up a common trope about how we think these characters look.

“Come Away” stars David Oyelowo and Angelina Jolie as parents to both Peter and Alice, both of whom are mixed race kids in the story from writer Marissa Kate Goodhill. Oyelowo and Jolie likewise have mixed race children and often have play dates together, but Chapman knew from the get go Oyelowo would be perfect for the part.

Exclusive: The Crown‘s Anna Chancellor and The Wire‘s Clarke Peters have joined the cast of Come Away, the fantasy drama starring Angelina Jolie and David Oyelowo that is serving as the live-action debut of Brave director Brenda Chapman. The pic has just started filming in the UK for seven weeks, followed by three weeks in Los Angeles.

As Deadline scooped in May, the pic, from UK-based Fred Films and Oyelowo’s Yoruba Saxon Productions, is imagined as a prequel to Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan and was scripted by Marissa Kate Goodhill.

The plot: Before Alice went to Wonderland, and before Peter became Pan, they were brother and sister who live an idyllic childhood with parents Jack and Rose (Oyelowo and Jolie) and older brother David. Fate turns their games of tea parties, pirates and lost boys upside down, setting the stage for their iconic journeys into Wonderland and Neverland.
