Joshua Jackson is shedding some light on the future of Doctor Odyssey amid reports that the ABC series would not be returning for a second season — even as the network and Disney-owned studio 20th Television, where co-creator Ryan Murphy is based, say they’re still discussing the show’s future.

Speaking to People, Jackson, who starred as a cruise-ship doctor on the series, indicated that the show is not returning, saying in part, “I am not holding my breath that it’s coming back.”

“It’s a bummer we don’t get to do it again, but I’m happy for the time that we got,” he said.

Jackson admitted he hadn’t been completely clued in on what the network and studio’s plans were.

The series, co-created by Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken, was the only scripted ABC show whose future was up in the air as the 2024-25 season came to a close. ABC has repeatedly said that it’s still weighing the show’s future: Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich told The Hollywood Reporter in May that “We’re continuing to have creative conversations with Ryan, and we’ll talk to him about what the next chapter looks like.”

Yet as those conversations were happening, Doctor Odyssey’s sets were being struck, sources tell THR, and contract options for the cast are set to expire Monday.

As a result, the Ryan Murphy-produced drama will not be coming back for a second season, “at least not anytime soon,” reports Deadline.

According to the outlet, “sources stress that the glossy cruise ship medical drama starring Joshua Jackson and Don Johnson has not been formally canceled, and Murphy is weighing creative options as to where he may want to take it next. If the show ultimately comes back — on ABC or Hulu, where it has done well — new deals with the cast will have to be made.”

The future of Doctor Odyssey remains an open question as ABC sails into Disney’s upfront presentation Tuesday.

The first-year drama from 20th Television and Ryan Murphy Television, starring Joshua Jackson as a cruise-ship physician, is the only current ABC scripted series still awaiting word on its future (its season finale airs Thursday). ABC has said it’s continuing talks with executive producer Murphy about the show’s next steps, a position Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich reiterated to The Hollywood Reporter in an interview Tuesday.

“It’s not currently on our schedule. We’re continuing to have creative conversations with Ryan, and we’ll talk to him about what the next chapter looks like,” Erwich said. “Ryan’s really busy, but we’ll continue to talk.”

Doctor Odyssey, which also stars Phillipa Soo, Sean Teale and Don Johnson, averages about 8 million viewers in Nielsen’s cross-platform ratings, which measure viewing over 35 days.

Brooke Shields is returning to the small screen. The actor, who first rose to fame as a child star in 1978's Pretty Baby and 1980's Blue Lagoon, will appear alongside Kim Kardashian in Hulu's new legal drama, All's Fair.

Per TV Line, Shields will also share the screen with three-time Emmy Award winner and eight-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close. All's Fair is described as a "high-end, glossy and sexy adult procedural set at an all-female law firm." Created by Ryna Murphy, the series will also feature Sarah Paulson, Niecy Nash-Betts, Matthew Noszka, Teyana Taylor, and two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts. While character details are scarce, Kardashian has been cast as a successful divorce lawyer.

During her Jan. 13 Q&a with She Media CEO Samantha Skey (hosted by TVLine sister site Flow Space), Brooke Shields spoke warmly of recently acting alongside three-time Emmy winner/eight-time Academy Award nominee Glenn Close and two-time Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts.

TVLine now hears that Shields worked with Close and Watts as a guest star on All’s Fair, the “glossy” legal drama that the prolific Ryan Murphy has in the works at Hulu. (Neither Hulu nor 20th Television would confirm Shields’ casting.)

Although Doctor Odyssey is still only in its first season, the new series has garnered a reputation for featuring at least one big-name guest star per episode, and one of them will surprisingly return in a future episode. The ABC medical drama TV show created by Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken, follows the medical professionals aboard the fictional luxury cruise ship The Odyssey. FX's Grotesquerie could survive to see a second season. Created by Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken, the horror drama follows Detective Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash) and Sister Megan (Micaela Diamond), as they investigate a series of gruesome, religiously-themed murders in a small town. The series, which delivered a shocking twist during its last episode, "Unplugged," has fared well with critics. The series will air new episodes until October 30, and according to recent comments from Murphy and FX Chairman of FX Content & FX Productions John Landgraf, it seems likely it will return for a second season.

Now, during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Landgraf discussed the possibility of more Grotesquerie following its first season, calling the show "like a series of Russian nesting dolls."

“Doctor Odyssey” just got a hot new chef, one that will surely bring testy waters for the nurses aboard.

Episode 4, titled “Wellness Week,” followed as Dr. Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson) and his team dealt with shenanigans from the alternative medicine community, who boarded the ship for the week led by guest stars Amy Sedaris, Margaret Cho and Kate Berlant. The episode also introduced chef Vivian Montgomery (Laura Harrier), a reality TV show winner who was working for Sedaris’ character and quickly sparked a connection with nurse Tristan Silva (Sean Teale).

“Vivian is a wonderful character and she’s joined us for the foreseeable future — I don’t know how long. I’m not allowed to say — but it’s lovely,” Teale told TheWrap of his character’s new love interest. “There’s something for Tristan’s logical and loving mind to pursue.

Ryan Murphy can’t stop winning this year. “American Horror Stories” hit No. 1 on Hulu’s Top 15 Today the week of its debut, making it the eighth Murphy show to hit dominate viewership in 2024.

“It’s like having eight children and they all got accepted to college,” Murphy told TheWrap. “I’m like, ‘Ok, well, I did my job.’ It feels good.”

It’s an unprecedented winning streak that started in January with the star-studded “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” from Murphy, Jaffe Cohen and Michael Zam, a series that was nominated for 10 Emmys and won for Outstanding Period Costumes for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. It was then followed by the second half of “American Horror Story: Delicate” in April, a season that was showrun by Halley Feiffer and led by Emma Roberts and Kim Kardashian. Both jumped to the No. 1 spot on Hulu’s Top 15 list after their premieres.

Grotesquerie co-creator Ryan Murphy discusses the real meaning behind episode 7's explosive plot twist about Lois' condition. The FX's horror drama revolves around Detective Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash) as she tries to solve the surrounding mystery. However, episode 7 reveals that everything she thought was real is a dream, and instead of her husband being the one in a coma, it's been her the whole time.

In an interview with Variety, Murphy explained how the twist is linked to the theme of love and hope and how it'd affect further episodes.

Now she has to explain to all of these people why they were doing these horrible things to her in her dream. [This is] the most optimistic thing Ive ever made. What it really is about is a person waking up from a state that was a living nightmare, which all of us are living in.

After the first six episodes, you would be forgiven for thinking “Grotesquerie” is just another Ryan Murphy show — a thriller filled with larger-than-life characters, brilliant actors and lovingly rendered horror. But like “American Horror Story,” “American Crime Story” and “Pose” before it, “Grotesquerie” marks a huge creative swing for the acclaimed showrunner. And it all comes down to Episode 7’s big twist.

“I’ve never done anything that worked out in advance, that meticulously designed,” series co-creator and executive producer Ryan Murphy told TheWrap. “It was so fun to do.”

It’s a fitting addition for a fall that marks Murphy’s official return to FX under its new parent company, Disney.

Airing Wednesdays on FX, Grotesquerie follows Detective Lois, who, in addition to facing familial issues at home, believes that a serial killer has set out to antagonize her. She hesitantly teams up with Sister Megan, hoping that her expertise can be an asset to the case. Together, the women become a surprising, yet powerful, duo who set out to end the string of murders that have tainted their small town.

Grotesquerie is written and created by Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken, and stars Emmy Award-winner Niecy Nash-Betts. The rest of the main cast includes Courtney B. Vance, Lesley Manville, Micaela Diamond, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Raven Goodwin, and Travis Kelce.
