Joshua Jackson is shedding some light on the future of Doctor Odyssey amid reports that the ABC series would not be returning for a second season — even as the network and Disney-owned studio 20th Television, where co-creator Ryan Murphy is based, say they’re still discussing the show’s future.
Speaking to People, Jackson, who starred as a cruise-ship doctor on the series, indicated that the show is not returning, saying in part, “I am not holding my breath that it’s coming back.”
“It’s a bummer we don’t get to do it again, but I’m happy for the time that we got,” he said.
Jackson admitted he hadn’t been completely clued in on what the network and studio’s plans were.
“But this is a crazy and difficult business, and whatever the reasons were for them not wanting to move forward with it, they don...

Doctor Odyssey won’t be setting sail for a second season — for now, and maybe not ever. But ABC maintains that the series hasn’t been canceled, even as its cast is on the verge of being free to pursue other work.
The series, co-created by Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken, was the only scripted ABC show whose future was up in the air as the 2024-25 season came to a close. ABC has repeatedly said that it’s still weighing the show’s future: Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich told The Hollywood Reporter in May that “We’re continuing to have creative conversations with Ryan, and we’ll talk to him about what the next chapter looks like.”
Yet as those conversations were happening, Doctor Odyssey’s sets were being struck, sources tell THR, and contract options for the cast are set to expire Monday.

With the show’s cast options set to expire on Monday, June 30, and the network not appearing to step in and extend those deals, “Doctor Odyssey” has effectively been canceled at ABC. As a result, the Ryan Murphy-produced drama will not be coming back for a second season, “at least not anytime soon,” reports Deadline.
According to the outlet, “sources stress that the glossy cruise ship medical drama starring Joshua Jackson and Don Johnson has not been formally canceled, and Murphy is weighing creative options as to where he may want to take it next. If the show ultimately comes back — on ABC or Hulu, where it has done well — new deals with the cast will have to be made.”

Doctor Odysseyseason 2 has been canceled at ABC, but that may not be the end of the story. The soapy medical drama, co-created by Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken, features Joshua Jackson in the lead role. He plays Dr. Max Blankman, a recent hire on a luxury cruise ship that mixes business and pleasure while attending to strange medical emergencies.
Even though it debuted strong, Doctor Odyssey season 2 has been on the bubble for months. With a Doctor Odyssey main cast that includes Phillipa Soo, Sean Teale, and Don Johnson, the drama is the only scripted ABC show not to be renewed. But even as it approaches the end of its current destination, there could be another.

“Doctor Odyssey” has been canceled after one season on ABC.
Since April, the Ryan Murphy-created medical drama has been the network’s only scripted series for which a renewal or cancellation had not been announced, and Variety has now confirmed that the cast’s contracts expire on Monday with no move from ABC to put the series back on its schedule for the upcoming year.
The news also comes after three of the show’s former crew members filed a lawsuit against Disney and 20th Television on May 30, alleging that the studio enabled an “unchecked campaign of sexual harassment for months” and accusing assistant prop master Tyler Patton of making “sexual jokes, innuendos, comments, sexual gestures and images” in addition to “unwanted touching” including “openly grabbing a visiting female employee’s buttocks.”

Exclusive: John Oliver will not be happy about this: Ryan Murphy’s Doctor Odyssey will not be coming back for a second season on ABC — at least not anytime soon. It’s a default cancellation as the cast’s options are expiring on Monday and are not being picked up, sources said, releasing the actors to do other projects. The crew also has moved on, largely staying employed as crew members are known for floating from one Ryan Murphy show to another.

The chances of a Doctor Odysseyseason 2 renewal gets a worrying update from lead star Joshua Jackson. Co-created by Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken, the soapy ABC drama is the network's only scripted series still in limbo. Although top executives have struck a cautiously optimistic tone about the show's future, Doctor Odyssey season 2 is hampered by relatively high production costs and the fact that the ratings haven't been roboust as initially hoped.
While attending the Motion Picture and Television Foundation's NextGen Annual Summer Party fundraiser at The Aster recently, Jackson answered a question about the future of Doctor Odyssey season 2 and revealed that he hasn't been told whether or not the medical drama is renewed. Why are medical dramas having a resurgence this Emmys season? The showrunners of some of the hottest series, which this year include Brilliant Minds, Doc, Doctor Odyssey, The Pitt, Pulse and Watson, have some theories (apart from the fact that they’re just “quite good,” says The Pitt’s R. Scott Gemmill).
“Medical shows introduce a problem and provide a solution, and in doing so offer hope,” Gemmill tells THR. “I think people need hope now more than they have in a while.” And Watson’s showrunner Craig Sweeny agrees: “Audiences are craving the hope and positivity that are baked into the genre.”

The future of Doctor Odyssey remains an open question as ABC sails into Disney’s upfront presentation Tuesday.
The first-year drama from 20th Television and Ryan Murphy Television, starring Joshua Jackson as a cruise-ship physician, is the only current ABC scripted series still awaiting word on its future (its season finale airs Thursday). ABC has said it’s continuing talks with executive producer Murphy about the show’s next steps, a position Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich reiterated to The Hollywood Reporter in an interview Tuesday.
“It’s not currently on our schedule. We’re continuing to have creative conversations with Ryan, and we’ll talk to him about what the next chapter looks like,” Erwich said. “Ryan’s really busy, but we’ll continue to talk.”
Doctor Odyssey, which also stars Phillipa Soo, Sean Teale and Don Johnson, averages about 8 million viewers in Nielsen’s cross-platform ratings, which measure viewing over 35 days.

Kim Kardashian is not to be messed with in the first teaser for Ryan Murphy’s “All’s Fair.” The trailer for the upcoming Hulu original dropped ahead of Disney’s upfronts presentation on Tuesday.
“You know what a girl’s best friend is? Not diamonds. Her lawyer,” Judith Light’s character confidentially tells Glenn Close. The trailer then pans between shots of several women looking fashionable, poised and confident from the boardroom to the courtroom as the “Cell Block Tango” from “Chicago” ominously plays.
“Get mad. Get hot,” Close’s character instructs. “Get revenge.”
The video then cuts to a voiceover from Kim Kardashian’s Allura Grant as she and her colleagues toast each other and powerwalk down hallways: “It’s our own boutique. Women representing women.”
But as the clip continues, things spiral out of control. An emotional Niecy Nash appears in a hospital gown. A tear-streaked Kardashian looks on horrified.

The series, to be teased at Disney’s Upfronts presentation on Tuesday, portrays women helping women to leave their cheating, scoundrel husbands. As an in-your-face Glenn Close, in the role of Dina Standish, tells a client at one point in the trailer: “Get mad! Get hot! Get revenge!”
Kardashian plays Allura Grant, the law firm’s owner in the legal drama that promises mediation room struggles, stylish power suits and clinking champagne glasses — all to secure pricey divorce settlements. “You’re right. Upon first glance, the acclaimed real-time emergency room Max series "The Pitt" and the ridiculous but joyous ABC cruise ship soap "Doctor Odyssey" seem like two completely different, polar opposite ends of the medical drama subgenre. "The Pitt" was created by "ER" producer R. Scott Gemmill and follows the emergency room team at a fictional Pittsburgh hospital in a deeply realistic way, with each episode representing one consecutive hour on the same difficult day. It's not just a great medical drama, but one of the best new dramas in recent memory. Meanwhile, "Doctor Odyssey" was created by Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken, and it's like Murphy's "Nip/Tuck" meets "The Love Boat," including unique celebrity guest stars each week. It's the kind of glorious camp that fans have come to expect of a Ryan Murphy project, with themed guest weeks and plot points like shark attacks...

9-1-1 star Oliver Stark has opened up about being cut from the show's crossover with Doctor Odyssey. Stark plays firefighter Evan "Buck" Buckley on the ABC procedural.
Doctor Odyssey and 9-1-1 aired their first crossover event last week, as LAPD officer Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) boarded the Odyssey in search of two suspicious passengers. This crossover was made possible because both shows were co-created by mega-producer Ryan Murphy and now both air on the same network, after 9-1-1 was picked up by ABC following its Fox cancelation in 2023.
Oliver Stark Addresses Absence From 9-1-1 / Doctor Odyssey Crossover
Speaking to Screen Rant, Stark confirmed that he was initially contacted about being part of the crossover before creative plans for the episode changed.

Although Doctor Odyssey is still only in its first season, the new series has garnered a reputation for featuring at least one big-name guest star per episode, and one of them will surprisingly return in a future episode. The ABC medical drama TV show created by Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken, follows the medical professionals aboard the fictional luxury cruise ship The Odyssey. Almost every week, the cruise hosts new passengers (and new illnesses and ailments to deal with). Most of them are played by actors many will recognize in Doctor Odyssey.

ABC's unorthodox medical drama Doctor Odyssey has put a new spin on the popular genre, but will it get renewed for a season 2? Created by Ryan Murphy (along with Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken), the series concerns Dr. Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson), who leads the medical team aboard the luxury cruise ship, Odyssey. While dealing with the myriad of medical emergencies that pop up on a cruise ship, Dr. Bankman and his team also form intimate bonds with one another. Made with Murphy's signature eye for sexy drama, Doctor Odyssey easily sets itself apart from other medical dramas.

ABC's Doctor Odyssey takes place almost entirely on The Odyssey, a luxury cruise ship that Don Johnson's Captain Robert Massey describes as "heaven," but many want to know if the ship actually exists or is based on a real-life vessel. The medical drama TV show created by Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken follows Joshua Jackson's Dr. Max Bankman, the new doctor on The Odyssey. Max is accompanied by his two nurses Avery Morgan (who is technically a nurse practitioner) and Tristan Silva, played by Phillipa Soo and Sean Teale in the Doctor Odyssey cast, respectively.
New episodes of Doctor Odyssey air on Thursdays at 9 pm Et on ABC. The show's first season is expected to have 18 episodes.
Max, Avery, and Tristan encounter various medical cases, from relatively mild ones (like wounds from a fight) to extreme (like a cardiac event or Huntington's disease) in Doctor Odyssey.

Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken’s Grotesquerie started in a rather unassuming fashion, but it was clear that a palpable darkness was brewing under the surface of its characters and setting, like a gaping chasm to Hell that could swallow the world at any moment. There’s been an emphasis on order ruling over chaos – particularly in the form of jigsaw puzzles – right from Grotesquerie’s first episode. Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash-Betts) and the rest of her family would innocently solve puzzles all season while she simultaneously tries to put together the pieces of a grander serial killer mystery where Lois can’t see the forest for the trees. To Grotesquerie’s credit, it’s a series that’s routinely kept its audience guessing regarding how all these pieces possibly fit together and what the finished picture is supposed to look like. Grotesquerie certainly hasn’t been...

FX's Grotesquerie could survive to see a second season. Created by Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken, the horror drama follows Detective Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash) and Sister Megan (Micaela Diamond), as they investigate a series of gruesome, religiously-themed murders in a small town. The series, which delivered a shocking twist during its last episode, "Unplugged," has fared well with critics. The series will air new episodes until October 30, and according to recent comments from Murphy and FX Chairman of FX Content & FX Productions John Landgraf, it seems likely it will return for a second season.
Now, during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Landgraf discussed the possibility of more Grotesquerie following its first season, calling the show "like a series of Russian nesting dolls."

Note: This story contains spoilers from “Doctor Odyssey” Episode 4.
“Doctor Odyssey” just got a hot new chef, one that will surely bring testy waters for the nurses aboard.
Episode 4, titled “Wellness Week,” followed as Dr. Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson) and his team dealt with shenanigans from the alternative medicine community, who boarded the ship for the week led by guest stars Amy Sedaris, Margaret Cho and Kate Berlant. The episode also introduced chef Vivian Montgomery (Laura Harrier), a reality TV show winner who was working for Sedaris’ character and quickly sparked a connection with nurse Tristan Silva (Sean Teale).
“Vivian is a wonderful character and she’s joined us for the foreseeable future — I don’t know how long. I’m not allowed to say — but it’s lovely,” Teale told TheWrap of his character’s new love interest. “There’s something for Tristan’s logical and loving mind to pursue.

Ryan Murphy can’t stop winning this year. “American Horror Stories” hit No. 1 on Hulu’s Top 15 Today the week of its debut, making it the eighth Murphy show to hit dominate viewership in 2024.
“It’s like having eight children and they all got accepted to college,” Murphy told TheWrap. “I’m like, ‘Ok, well, I did my job.’ It feels good.”
It’s an unprecedented winning streak that started in January with the star-studded “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” from Murphy, Jaffe Cohen and Michael Zam, a series that was nominated for 10 Emmys and won for Outstanding Period Costumes for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. It was then followed by the second half of “American Horror Story: Delicate” in April, a season that was showrun by Halley Feiffer and led by Emma Roberts and Kim Kardashian. Both jumped to the No. 1 spot on Hulu’s Top 15 list after their premieres.

Note: The following story contains spoilers from “Grotesquerie” Episode 7.
“Grotesquerie” star Micaela Diamond always knew Episode 7 was going to be a challenge. Even by the wild standards of this FX show from Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken, “Unplugged” is on an entirely different level.
“Episode 7 is like if ‘Fatal Attraction’ was directed by Luis Buñuel except it’s ‘Grotesquerie’ and Max Winkler is just a genius,” Diamond told TheWrap of the game-changing installment.
After six episodes spent investigating a serial killer known only as Grotesquerie, Lois (Niecy Nash-Betts) finally uncovered that the killer was none other than Father Charlie (Nicholas Alexander Chavez). As everyone around her celebrated, Lois couldn’t shake the feeling that the case hadn’t been fully solved. That’s when she zeroed in on her partner in solving the crimes, Sister Megan (Diamond). As the pair made dinner together, Lois slowly outlined her theory,...

The following contains spoilers for Grotesquerie season 1, episode 7, "Episode 7."
Grotesquerie co-creator Ryan Murphy discusses the real meaning behind episode 7's explosive plot twist about Lois' condition. The FX's horror drama revolves around Detective Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash) as she tries to solve the surrounding mystery. However, episode 7 reveals that everything she thought was real is a dream, and instead of her husband being the one in a coma, it's been her the whole time.
In an interview with Variety, Murphy explained how the twist is linked to the theme of love and hope and how it'd affect further episodes.
Now she has to explain to all of these people why they were doing these horrible things to her in her dream. [This is] the most optimistic thing Ive ever made. What it really is about is a person waking up from a state that was a living nightmare, which all of us are living in.

Note: This story contains spoilers from “Grotesquerie” Episode 7.
After the first six episodes, you would be forgiven for thinking “Grotesquerie” is just another Ryan Murphy show — a thriller filled with larger-than-life characters, brilliant actors and lovingly rendered horror. But like “American Horror Story,” “American Crime Story” and “Pose” before it, “Grotesquerie” marks a huge creative swing for the acclaimed showrunner. And it all comes down to Episode 7’s big twist.
“I’ve never done anything that worked out in advance, that meticulously designed,” series co-creator and executive producer Ryan Murphy told TheWrap. “It was so fun to do.”
It’s a fitting addition for a fall that marks Murphy’s official return to FX under its new parent company, Disney.
In its first six episodes, “Grotesquerie” tells the story of Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash-Betts), an alcoholic detective whose husband is trapped in a coma. When a serial killer with a knack for staging morbid,...
