Image
Actor Ishwak Singh, who is known for ‘Rocket Singh’, ‘Paatal Lok’ and ‘Made In Heaven’, has shared that the theatre culture of Mumbai and Delhi differ a lot in terms of their larger craft and pitching of the stories.

The actor recently did a play in Delhi titled ‘Ek Mamooli Aadmi’, and garnered a lot of positive responses. On the occasion of World Theatre Day, the actor spoke with Ians and shared that Delhi theatre is fuelled by raw passion while the Mumbai theatre circuit has a certain finesse which comes from the involvement of actors like Naseeruddin Shah.

Ishwak told Ians: “There is a finesse in Bombay theatre which comes from the active involvement of legends like Naseer sahab (Naseeruddin Shah) which is quite unique. Delhi theatre is fuelled by raw passion and driven by theatre gurus who are working against the tide to keep the art robust. Groups...

A mouthful of Bitter Chocolate, and why Lushin Dubey wants to talk about it
Image
New Delhi, Aug 20 (Ians) For the longest time, theatre actor and director Lushin Dubey was the youngest member in Delhi-based Barry John’s ‘Theatre Action Group’ (Tag) where she was part of mega productions by major playwrights. However, when she came back after a Master’s degree from the US where she learned about working with special needs children, she felt a certain pull towards contemporary social issues which demanded to be talked about.

Dubey came across Pinky Virani’s work ‘Aruna Story’ and approached her for the rights, but they had already been sold. “So I picked up her ‘Bitter Chocolate’ — I found it very relevant considering there was a need to talk about sexual abuse which had for long being pushed under the carpet but was now being talked about.”

The actor approached theatre director Arvind Gaur of New Delhi-based Asmita theatre group and they teamed up for the production.

Piyush Mishra and exorcising Hamlet’s ghost
Image
He may have stunned the entire theatre fraternity with the portrayal of Hamlet in the Shakespearean tragedy as a student at the National School of Drama (Nsd) and later with his solo performances ‘An Evening with Piyush Mishra’. But for decades, the character’s ghost never left the actor – entering his personal space and clawing up to his very being.

“You cannot imagine the adulteration. A certain arrogance, complete self-indulgence, alcoholism… in my mind, I was the solo actor on life’s stage and everybody else was not supposed to take their eyes off my brilliance. Yes, I committed many mistakes. Confessing them was traumatic, but also cathartic,” he says with just the right dramatic pauses.

Mishra, the superstar of Delhi stage with a cult following during his time where he worked with theatre directors like N K Shar and Arvind Gaur, and also wrote the play ‘Hamlet Bombay Nahin...
