Happy Face episode 8 recap and review: The real star emerges (Finale)
Image
The Happy Face season finale is finally here, and there’s one thing on my mind: When does season 2 arrive? I know it's billed as a limited series, but given how season 1 ends, I’d say the door is wide open to another season.

In episode 8, “The Star,” Keith (Dennis Quaid) suffers a heart attack while Melissa (Annaleigh Ashford) solves the Heather Richmond case and almost loses her own life in the process. While she emerges as the real star and finally frees herself from her father’s grasp, Hazel (Khiyla Aynne) takes her power back at school, and Ben (James Wolk) faces unexpected consequences for his actions. Let’s break this season finale recap down in detail!

It’s a day full of excitement for Keith.

Happy Face episode 6 recap and review: Panic, desperation, and more bombshells
Image
This post contains spoilers from Paramount+’s Happy Face episode 6, “Lorelai.”

On the heels of episode 5, everyone is panicking on top of feeling desperate. We all thought D.A. Calloway (Michael O'Neill) was going to release Elijah (Damon Gupton) from prison, but instead he charged him as a co-conspirator with Keith Jesperson, aka Happy Face (Dennis Quaid), in killing Heather Richmond. Episode 6 picks up right in the thicket of everyone’s panic, only to see more drama unfold and more bombshell revelations.

This recap finds Melissa (Annaleigh Ashford) and Ivy (Tamera Tomakili) making some crucial discoveries, even catching Joyce (Marci T. House) in a lie that could negate their efforts and destroy Elijah’s case, as Calloway offers Happy Face a deal. Elsewhere, Ben (James Wolk) loses his promotion at work due to his family drama, Happy Face rescues Hazel (Khiyla Aynne) after some cruel bullying, and Elijah’s fate is revealed.

'Happy Face' Release Schedule
Image
Happy Face is a new Paramount+ true-crime series set to roll out eight new episodes this Spring. Adapted from the 2018 podcast of the same name, the docudrama concerns a teenage girl who discovers her father is secretly the Happy Face Killer, a serial kidnapper and murderer who took the lives of at least eight women in the 1990s. Dennis Quaid and Annaleigh Ashford headline the docudrama as the father-daughter combo.

With a relatively straightforward streaming schedule, Happy Face will air its eight-episode first season over seven weeks, ending on May 1st. Once hooking viewers with a double dose of terror, Paramount+ will issue a new weekly episode until the finale. Including episode titles and writers attached, here's everything to know about when, where, and how to watch Happy Face in the coming weeks.

How Many Episodes Will There Be in 'Happy Face'?

Tiff Review: ‘Freaks’ is a Sci-Fi Thriller with Grounded Stakes
It’s weird to think about a movie like Push today — an under-appreciated, much-maligned sci-fi that I’d argue is a lot better than the legacy it’s been given. The X-Men and Spider-Man trilogies had completed by the time it was released and Iron Man just hit theaters the year before to usher in what would become the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And yet here was a smaller-scale, original piece centering upon a group of mutants that could exist outside the realm of built-in fandoms. Perhaps that which made it special at a moment in history on the cusp of becoming inundated with superhero sagas was its downfall. IP proved more important to studios and audiences alike than opening minds to something different. I hope Freaks doesn’t suffer the same fate.

Written and directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein (currently shooting the live-action Kim Possible reboot), Freaks...

Toronto Film Review: ‘Freaks’
Directed by first-time feature helmers Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, “Freaks” is a film whose greatest virtues are inseparable from its limitations. Using a tiny handful of locations, a small cast (albeit one that includes Bruce Dern), and some judiciously applied digital effects, the two writer-directors manage to hit most of the marks of a big-budget sci-fi thriller with almost none of the usual resources, spinning a tight yarn whose structural cleverness makes it easy to ignore the deeply familiar story at its core. Bringing obliquely to mind the likes of “Monsters” and “Safety Not Guaranteed,” “Freaks” feels like a quintessential calling-card sort of low-budget indie, as though the filmmakers are angling for a shot at a studio project by showing how well they can tackle the form from outside in. Judging by their results here, they certainly deserve a look.

Although the narrative will eventually concern itself with government...
