The 5th Wave: 2016 Dystopian YA Movie Finds New Life on Netflix
Image
YA dystopian movie adaptations were a major trend during the 2010s. It all started with The Hunger Games movies in 2012, which, based on the books by Suzanne Collins, have made $3.3 billion at the box office and lived on even after the trend has died, with The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes becoming a hit in 2023 and a sequel, Sunrise on the Reaping, set for 2026.

Other examples that found success include the three Maze Runner movies, based on the books by James Dashner, which made $949 million at the box office, and the three Divergent movies, based on the books by Veronica Roth, which, despite being panned by critics, made $765 million at the box office.

Other examples include I Am Number Four (2011), Ender's Game, The Host, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (all 2013), The Giver (2014), and The Darkest Minds (2018). Steven Spielberg even got in on the trend with Ready Player One (2018). However,...

6 NBC shows I need to see renewed by May 2025
Image
It’s that time of year when we know that more cancellations and renewals are likely to come. There are still far too many shows on the bubble, and it’s hard to call which way the networks will go with some of the shows. That’s certainly the case with the NBC shows.

While I would love to see everything make it through because I think the hard work of the cast and crew deserves to be recognized, there are certain shows that I want to see more than others. I’m invested in the storylines and the writing, or the shows have already ended on cliffhangers that I need answers to. Here are the six NBC shows I need to see make it through to the 2025–2026 TV season.

Additionally, the growing disputes between team leaders Alex (Alexander Ludwig), John (Alex MacNicoll), and Chris (Charles Melton) throw the entire team into turmoil. Doc Series Premiere Review: Fox's Medical Drama Offers Nothing New
Image
The following contains major spoilers from Doc Season 1, Episode 1, "If at First You Don't Succeed...," which debuted Tuesday, Jan. 7 on Fox.

The Fox series Doc is an example of how there are too many TV medical dramas. The show is well-cast, led by Molly Parker and fan-favorite Scott Wolf, but it doesn't offer anything that audiences haven't seen before. Like NBC's Brilliant Minds just a few months before it, Doc plays safely within the tropes and expectations of the medical genre to deliver something that's entertaining, but nowhere near as compelling as it wants to be.

The clumsily titled show focuses on Dr. Amy Larsen, a high-flying department head at the fictional Westside Hospital in Minneapolis. The hook is that a car accident wipes out eight years of Amy's memory, so that she's essentially stuck in 2016. But what's supposed to be an emotional touchpoint feels like another gimmick, and the strong performances of Parker,...

'There's an Inspiration Aspect': Brilliant Minds Cast on NBC Show's Success

The four characters have each found directions and revealed quirks over the first season. And the actors who play them have also been able to show off different aspects of their talent to the audience.

In an interview with Cbr, stars Alex MacNicoll (who portrays Dr. Van Markus) and Spence Moore II (who plays Dr. Jacob Nash) reflected on the journeys their characters have taken. Were they in the know on some of the big reveals, like Van's "superpower" diagnosis, or were they just as surprised as the fans? And why do they believe Brilliant Minds is not only a standout medical drama, but a different kind of TV show?

Cbr: Alex, you had the biggest reveal of the season when...

Image

NBC’s Brilliant Minds’ first season ends with episode 13, “The Man Who Can’t See Faces.” Episode 13 begins with the doctors getting ready for work. Oliver (Zachary Quinto) and Josh (Teddy Sears) make breakfast together, and Josh surprises Oliver with an invitation to a black-tie gala. Oliver isn’t enthusiastic about a formal event but accepts since Josh is receiving an award.

Josh admits he’s falling for Oliver. Oliver smiles but doesn’t reply.

Oliver’s dad, Noah (Mandy Patinkin), is still hanging out at Muriel’s place and insists he’s taking his meds and “in a good place.” Muriel (Donna Murphy) wonders what they’ll tell Oliver, concerned this news will disrupt his happiness. She’d prefer Noah just leave rather than take Oliver’s happiness away from him.

Brilliant Minds season 1 finale recap and review: "The Man Who Can't See Face"
Image
The end of the previous episode told us that Noah Wolf was still alive and back. How did that play out in the Brilliant Minds season 1 finale?

Caution: This post contains Spoilers from the Brilliant Minds season 1 finale

We all knew that Mandy Patinkin had to play someone major to just suddenly show up in Brilliant Minds. By the end of the penultimate episode, we learned that he was Noah Wolf, Oliver’s dad. It left us with a world of questions about what actually happened. Muriel clearly knew her ex-husband was still alive, so why would she lie to Oliver all these years?

Meanwhile, we got to pick up on Ericka after the events of the building collapsing, and we had a chance to see Van as a father. Pierce’s past also came back to haunt her at the end of the finale.

Ericka dealt with her Ptsd...

‘Brilliant Minds’ Episode 12 Recap: “The Doctor Whose World Collapsed”
Image
Zachary Quinto as Dr. Oliver Wolf in ‘Brilliant Minds’ episode 12 (Photo by: Rafy/NBC)

NBC’s Brilliant Minds season one winter finale left off with a cliffhanger showing Ericka’s apartment building collapsing. Episode 12 plunges into the aftermath of the collapse, with first responders looking for survivors amid the rubble.

200 people, including Ericka, live in the apartment complex that has partially collapsed.

Dr. Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto) warns the interns that a flood of traumatized survivors is coming their way. And although it’s against his normal teachings, they need to detach themselves from what’s happening and treat the injured.

The emergency room is quickly jam-packed with patients-some with minor injuries, some critical, and all needing assessment.

Back at the scene, paramedic Katie Rodriguez (from episode 10) is among the first responders helping the injured. A severely injured woman has a skull fracture, as diagnosed by a doctor (Mandy Patinkin...

Brilliant Minds creator Michael Grassi talks empathy and unique medical conditions
Image
There are few medical dramas that show off the real reason doctors are needed. Brilliant Minds did that bringing us a story of a doctor who sees more than patients.

Dr. Oliver Wolf, played by Zachary Quinto, is based on the real Dr. Oliver Sacks. The series is based on Dr. Sacks’s work, a man who treated the people and not the symptoms. Some of this was simply due to his own condition of face blindness, which is something our lead character has.

I talked with Michael Grassi about the creation of this series, including finding the rare and wild medical conditions and why this series is so important right now.

Why Brilliant Minds was the show to create

Brilliant Minds isn't on tonight (here's why and when it will return)
Image
There’s some terrible news for Brilliant Minds fans tonight. There isn’t a new episode on Monday, Dec. 16.

Of course, the show isn’t canceled. At least, not yet. This break is for a good reason, and we do know when the show will return with new episodes. We even have some ideas as to what’s going to happen when the series does return.

Brilliant Minds has aired its last episode of 2024

The previous episode was a big one, and it probably isn’t surprising to learn that it was the last episode of 2024. Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 11 was the fall finale.

All networks take some time off from their regular schedules this time of year. It’s when the linear ratings take a dip as people spend time with family or go out for work events or local events. There’s a lot going on, especially...

Dr. Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto) glances knowingly at Carol, realizing the gravity of the situation.

Privately, Carol can’t believe Alison might be her one patient to die by suicide. She was only treating her to get more details on Morris’ infidelity and confesses she both envied and hated her. Oliver insists Carol isn’t at fault; Alison is a sick woman. Carol knows this is a huge ethical lapse, but Oliver thinks they should concentrate on keeping Alison alive for now.

Wolf and Nichols struggling professionally in Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 11 (Preview)
Image
During the previous episode, Pierce warned Wolf about dating someone he worked with. It looks like that will come up in Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 11, as Wolf and Nichols disagree with how to deal with a patient.

While the episode is titled “The Other Woman,” much of the promotional material focuses on Wolf and Nichols. They work with a patient who wants to go a specific route, but the two disagree on the right method of treatment. Could this have a knock-on effect on their relationship? Things are still early days for the two of them.

Zachary Quinto Is Grateful That Brilliant Minds Demonstrates Real-World Progress
Image
NBC's Brilliant Minds premiered on September 23 with new episodes airing weekly on Mondays. The show is inspired by real-life physician, Oliver Sacks, and sees Zachary Quinto play a neurologist who has a condition called prosopagnosia, also known as facial blindness. After being fired from his previous job, Oliver Wolf takes his long-time friend up on her offer to work at Bronx General Hospital.

Carol entrusts Dr. Wolf with a group of young interns, who are caught off guard by his unconventional approach to care. However, despite Oliver's initial resistance to being a teacher, Quinto feels that everyone has adapted to the new dynamic. The star explains that their different perspectives allow him to approach cases from all angles, which benefits the patient in the long run. In addition to Quinto, Tamberla Perry, Ashleigh Lathrop, Alex MacNicoll, Aury Krebs, Spence Moore II, Teddy Sears, and Donna Murphy make up the main cast.

Brilliant Minds Just Trapped Its Best Character In A Pointless Storyline
Image
Warning: this article contains spoilers for Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 10.Brilliant Minds is hindering Ericka, its best intern, by caging her in a cliché love triangle storyline. The NBC hit led by Zachary Quinto has gotten a lot right across its first ten episodes, but the direction the show is taking for the interns’ relationship dynamics is anything but original. Instead of focusing on the interns as individuals, the wonderful cast of characters in Brilliant Minds has been divided into potential couples. Since the pilot, interesting characters like Ericka Kinney (Ashleigh Lathrop), Van Markus (Alex MacNicoll), and Jacob Nash (Spence Moore II) have been reduced to a derivative love triangle.

Although Brilliant Minds season 2 has yet to be confirmed, what the show is doing to Ericka’s character will have dire consequences for future storylines if the unique medical drama is renewed. The self-proclaimed “real quarterback” of Dr. Wolf’s interns,...

When a first responder crashes in the hospital, Wolf and his interns get to work in Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 10. This is an important story about chronic pain and treatments.

Caution: This post contains Spoilers for Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 10.

One thing that Brilliant Minds continues to do well is give us people-driven storylines. This is more than just a diagnosis. To Wolf, his patients are people, and he looks past the symptoms to figure out the treatments. His interns are learning well from him, figuring out ways to help patients at the same time.

Wolf understands chronic pain in Brilliant Minds

While Wolf isn’t struggling with a physical issue, he does understand chronic pain. He’s dealt with chronic emotional pain for decades. No, this isn’t the same as physical pain. I’ve been through both, and I can say that physical pain that doesn’t seem...

Paramedics rush to a call as NBC’s Brilliant Minds episode 10 opens. Finn Kemp, a 10-year-old boy with autism, is injured and has locked himself in a room. His poor dad can’t get him to open the door. One paramedic notices toy Camaros on the floor and entices Finn to open the door by talking about them.

The female paramedic, Katie (Mishel Prada), continues to make real contact with Finn as she gets him on the gurney and into the ambulance. Dr. Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto) and his interns meet the ambulance at the door, and after ushering Finn inside, Oliver notices Katie seems off. She blames it on coffee.

Wolf isn’t convinced, but she heads back out on another call before he can question her.

Renewal scorecard 2024–2025: Which shows are likely canceled and renewed?
Image
That time of year is here. As we close out the calendar year, we get ready for cancellations and renewals. Which of our favorite broadcast TV shows are likely to make it through to another TV season?

Fall 2024 is the most normal fall we’ve had since the pandemic in 2020. Most TV shows got off to their usual September starts, and we’ve had normal fall finales and we’re getting ready for January returns. The broadcast networks have had a mixture of reality and scripted shows.

For this post, we take a look at the scripted lineup. The non-scripted shows have slightly different requirements as they’re not as expensive to make, while the scripted lineup tends to be more focused on linear ratings, especially when it comes to a star-studded lineup.

We’re only looking at the Big 5 broadcast networks. Here’s the statements we’ll make:

NBC’s Brilliant Minds episode nine opens with Ericka (Ashleigh Lathrop) and Van (Alex MacNicoll) in bed, totally happy but also certain they can’t tell any of their colleagues about their relationship. They want to keep things uncomplicated as long as possible.

While this is going on Dr. Oliver Wolf’s voiceover is all about emotions and how they affect the way we see colors. Colors can also cause emotions.

Oliver (Zachary Quinto) comes into work smiling, and the interns joke among themselves about their boss getting laid. After leaving a quick voicemail for Dr. Josh Nichols (Teddy Sears), Oliver meets with Angelika Delaney about one of her artist clients, Gabriel Ferguson. Recently, he stopped painting and is blaming it on migraines.

Unfortunately, Gabe’s shut her out,...

NBC’s Brilliant Minds episode eight opens with Dr. Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto) thinking about what motivates us to carry on, even on our worst days. His opinion? It’s all about desire. When we get what we want, our brain gives us dopamine – the neurotransmitter that creates pleasure.

Dr. Ericka Kinney (Ashleigh Lathrop) and Dr. Jacob Nash (Spence Moore II) engage in a little flirting, but what catches Dr. Carol Pierce’s (Tamberla Perry) attention is the look that passes between Oliver and Dr. Josh Nichols (Teddy Sears).

In other news, the tension between Oliver and his mom, Dr. Muriel Landon (Donna Murphy), is so thick you could cut it with a knife.

Episode eight’s titular case involves June Sullivan (Susan Nimoy), an elderly woman whose two adult sons are concerned she may have dementia.

Brilliant Minds: Teddy Sears talks playing a not-so-stereotypical neurosurgeon

Dr. Josh Nichols is not your stereotypical neurosurgeon in Brilliant Minds. We got to chat with Teddy Sears about his character and playing That kiss in episode 7.

Caution: This interview contains Spoilers for Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 7.

Things take a turn when Wolf opens up about his face blindness. Then Nichols opens up about his past. We chatted with Teddy Sears about that backstory and what it meant for developing this character.
