Never Let Go: Halle Berry / Alexandre Aja horror film gets a PVOD release this week
Halle Berry
About two years ago, we heard that Halle Berry had signed on to star in a horror movie called Mother Land, with genre regular Alexandre Aja on board to direct. Last year, the project went into production under a new title, Never Let Go. The finished film was given a theatrical release on September 20th (you can read our review Here)… and it didn’t exactly set the box office on fire. It has only earned $21 million worldwide. Now it’s time for the movie to receive a PVOD release, so maybe it will be more successful when people are able to watch it in the comfort of their own homes. Lionsgate has announced they will be giving Never Let Go a Premium Video on Demand and Premium Electronic Sell-Through release on October 11th. A press release notes that the film “will be available to buy for $24.99 and to rent...

Never Let Go Has a Wild Ending, But What's Real?
Image
Alexandre Aja is one of those directors whose name may not be immediately recognizable to all audiences, but whose films certainly are. Anyone with a passing interest in horror will have at least heard of his movies and have probably seen at least one. With titles like The Hills Have Eyes (2006), Piranha 3D, Crawl and Horns, his work is extensive and recognizable. His latest title, Never Let Go, might be his most ambitious and compelling film yet. Starring Halle Berry, Percy Daggs IV, and Anthony B. Jenkins, this ambiguous and mind-bending thriller has audiences flocking to the theaters and picking it apart in order to try and figure out the truth behind the complex story.

‘Never Let Go’ Review
Image
Stars: Halle Berry, Anthony B Jenkins, Percy Daggs IV, Kathryn Kirkpatrick | Written by Kc Coughlin, Ryan Grassby | Directed by Alexandre Aja

The latest film from French horror director Alexandre Aja is an evil-in-the-woods mystery chiller that’s intent on keeping the audience guessing until the end. As such, it has its moments, thanks to strong performances by the two young leads, but it’s never as satisfying or as scary as it ought to be.

Never Let Go takes place in a remote wooden house in the forest, where Halle Berry’s Momma (the character is never named) is raising her two young, non-identical twin boys Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) and Samuel (Anthony B Jenkins), apparently in the wake of some apocalyptic event that has befallen the rest of the country. Accordingly, Momma tells the boys that if they leave the house, they must remain tied to it via a length of thick rope,...

Never Let Go (2024) Review
Image
The world has ended, or so says Momma, played by Halle Berry. She lives with her two sons Samuel (Anthony B. Jenkins) and Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) and their dog in big wooden house the middle of the woods.

The details of this apocalyptic event are hazy, however Momma repetitively tells her boys that there is an evil out there that can posses you and make you kill your loved ones. This is what had happened to their grandparents and their father and now the trio live in constant fear of the outside world.

The only thing that keeps them safe is the house itself so the only way they can leave is while tied to its foundations on long pieces of rope. If bound to the building they are safe but should that rope break or they stray beyond it, who know what terrible things will happen. That’s...

Fantastic Fest 2024 Review: Never Let Go is a Thrilling Family Fable That Holds On Too Tight
Image
Never Let Go blends dystopian storytelling with folkloric haunts and a traumatized Halle Berry to hatch something emotionally resonant yet out of reach. Director Alexandre Aja brings his brutal visual signatures to what could otherwise be a children's horror fairytale. Writers Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby bind a family to their homestead in the most literal representation of "never letting go," exploring how living with our demons versus confronting them head-on can lead to dire repercussions. Themes are easily identifiable, and Aja's grotesque touches elevate the stakes, but satisfaction is missing from finale climaxes. The existential questions Coughlin and Grassby's story asks are engaging and tough, but the film's blatant responses hit you over the head one too many times.

Halle Berry stars as a tattooed mother who protects her children Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) and Samuel (Anthony B. Jenkins). They retreat into nature's isolation, a blessed house with...

‘Never Let Go’ Director Alexandre Aja Breaks Down That Shocking Twist
Image
“Never Let Go” is finally here.

And the new supernatural thriller from French filmmaker Alexandre Aja is built around an ingenious concept: a woman (Halle Berry) and her two children (Percy Daggs IV and Anthony B. Jenkins) live alone in a cabin deep in the woods. According to her, a malevolent presence haunts the woods and society has fallen as a result of it. She makes a series of rules for their survival, like being tethered to the house by a rope at all times.

But is she nuts? Or are these really these things out there?

That is something that is played with for much of the movie’s runtime. And it leads to one of the more shocking moments of the film. TheWrap spoke to director Aja about this moment.

Major spoiler warning. Seriously. Turn back now and return to this article after you’ve watched (you don...

Never Let Go Review: Halle Berry returns to horror!
Image
Plot: A mother (Halle Berry) and her twin sons (Percy Daggs IV and Anthony B. Jenkins) are tormented by a malicious spirit. They can only survive if they remain connected to their home, a remote cabin in the woods. But when one of the sons starts to question whether or not the evil really exists, the family finds itself in greater danger than ever.

Review: Alexandre Aja has easily established himself as one of the most unique voices in horror, famously willing to try his hand at just about every aspect of the genre. He’s made hardcore horror (High Tension), funny horror (Piranha 3D), contained horror (Crawl – which is getting a sequel) and even romantic horror (Horns). With Never Let Go, he dips his toe into the elevated facet of the genre, weaving a highly allegorical yarn that ties in themes of motherhood, brotherhood, repressed trauma, and more.

As such,...

Never Let Go's Young Stars Reflect On Having Halle Berry As A Screen Mom
Image
Never Let Go is a new horror film that also happens to lean heavily into the realm of a family drama. It was brought to the screen by writing duo Kc Coughlin and Ryan Grassby and directed by Alexandre Aja, known for his past horror work including Crawl and The Hills Have Eyes. The movie stars Halle Berry as a motherunnamed, as far as the audience knowswho ensures that her twin sons never leave the house without a tether, ostensibly to keep them safe from deadly evil lurking in the woods.

The sons in question, Nolan and Samuel, are played by Percy Daggs IV and Anthony B. Jenkins, respectively. Despite their age, both actors have appeared in exciting projects before joining what would become the movie with Halle Berrys best Rotten Tomatoes score since 2019. Daggs previously appeared in The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey and Undone, and Jenkins was in...

Never Let Go Director Alexandre Aja On Making A Family-Forward Horror Fairy Tale
Image
Never Let Go is a new horror thriller starring Academy Award Winner Halle Berry. The story is set in the woods, where Berrys character lives in a secluded cabin with her two sons. Screen Rants Never Let Go review called the film a fascinating psychological thriller, and the success of its execution fell in large part to director Alexandre Aja. ‘Never Let Go’ – Alexandre Aja Discusses the Film’s Fairy Tale Influences [Interview]
Image
Director Alexandre Aja has certainly made his mark on the horror genre over the past 20 years. After bursting onto the scene in 2003 with the controversial High Tension, he weaved his way through American genre films with the remake of Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes, the remake of Into the Mirror, the remake of Joe Dante’s Piranha, the adaptation of Joe Hill’s Horns, and the creature feature Crawl. Now, he’s unleashing his latest film Never Let Go, a mature fairy tale that sends him back into a world similar to the one he built in Horns eleven years ago.

Never Let Go, in theaters on Friday, stars Halle Berry, Percy Daggs IV and Anthony B. Jenkins.

Berry plays June, “known simply as Momma to her fraternal twin sons, Samuel (Anthony B. Jenkins) and Nolan (Percy Daggs IV). After an entity she calls ‘the Evil’ took over the world,...

Never Let Go: We Interview Halle Berry, Alexandre Aja and more!
Halle Berry, Anthony B. Jenkins, and Percy Daggs IV in Never Let Go (2024)
Never Let Go is definitely one of the most highly anticipated genre movies of the fall season. The latest from Alexandre Aja features Halle Barry, Anthony B. Jenkins, and Percy Daggs IV is one that resonated with me big time. In it, a mother and her children are tormented by a malicious spirit which keeps them, literally, tied to the foundations of their home. At its heart, it has an amazing performance from star Halle Berry, who grounds the horror somewhat. The sweet and loving nature of her relationship with her children is beautifully played out. But, it also has plenty of horror elements baked in, which show off Aja’s amazing talent for the genre in a big way. Recently, I had the chance to interview Berry, Jenkins, and Daggs, and I found it to be an utterly charming experience.

First off, I’ve never had the chance to talk to Ms.

‘Never Let Go’ Review – Alexandre Aja’s Lean Bedtime Story Has Sharp Teeth
Image
Director Alexandre Aja continues his recent streak of helming self-contained horror, shifting from the claustrophobic confines of space in Oxygen and the flooding Florida house in Crawl to a rundown cabin in the woods with his latest, Never Let Go. Its simple setup and fairy tale qualities feel familiar, with inevitable comparisons drawn to Bird Box due to the title’s meaning. While it is lean in plotting, Never Let Go becomes a vicious little bedtime story with sharp teeth in Aja’s hands, one that refreshingly doesn’t handhold.

Never Let Go introduces a small family of three deep into their self-imposed isolation in the woods. Under the strict rules of Momma (Halle Berry), siblings Samuel and Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) spend their days venturing out to forage for food while tethered to ropes. The rope is key: there’s an evil lurking in the forest that only Momma can see,...

‘Never Let Go’ Review: Is She or Isn’t She? It’s a Dubious Question in Alexandre Aja’s Horror Film
Image
After playing around with genre in a more confined sandbox with Crawl and Oxygen, Never Let Go finds Alexandre Aja venturing back to terrain similar to that of 2003’s High Tension. As in that home invasion thriller, the remote setting in Never Let Go generates an oddly claustrophobic tension all its own, only here the home is a reliable place of safety. It’s a bastion in the woods that protects fraternal twins Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) and Sam (Anthony B. Jenkins) from “the Evil” that lies outside their doorstep, and which could destroy them with a single touch. Or so their Momma (Halle Berry) tells them on a daily basis.

Momma demands that whenever her boys go outside, they tie a rope that’s connected to the home around their waists, allowing them to wander only so far into the surrounding woods. This symbolic umbilical cord imagery spells out...

Never Let Go Review: Into the Woods of Dread
Image
Halle Berry stars as a mother determined to shield her twin sons from harms unseen in the remote woods of their secluded home. For years, they’ve kept to themselves in the forest cabin, venturing out only with ropes tied to survive whatever menace lurks beyond. But as resources run low and the boys grow curious, tensions mount over what dangers may truly haunt the wilderness—and whether any evil exists apart from fears within.

Directed by Alexandre Aja, Never Let Go takes on tones of psychological horror crossed with a parent’s nightmare. Screenwriters Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby offer just enough detail to pique interest while maintaining an unsettling ambiguity. Is this mysterious force tormenting the family only real in the mother’s mind? As circumstances worsen, so too do divides forming between her will to protect and the sons’ newfound independence.

Berry delivers a visceral performance leading...

Never Let Go Review: Halle Berry Leads Alexandre Aja's Creepy Fractured Fairytale
Image
Once upon a time, there was a filmmaker named Alexandre Aja. His career was fascinating in the way it wasn't strictly auteurist, for while every director has their unique stylistic tics and proclivities, not everyone has a distinctive, strong signature. Aja has certainly always been a genre filmmaker, one who's interested in subversion and twists, in playing around with the conventions of genre, and in being unafraid to use audience's sympathies against them. Whether it's been in the brutal, New French Extremity slashers of "High Tension" and "The Hills Have Eyes," the gleefully exploitative "Piranha 3D," the literary roots of "Horns" and "The 9th Life of Louis Drax," or the suspense exercises of "Crawl" and "Oxygen," Aja has always found ways to surprise and upset (in every sense of the word) with his films.

All this is to say that, in the case of Aja's latest film, "Never Let Go,...

‘Never Let Go’ Review: Halle Berry Rolls Out the Unwelcome Mat to Evil Spirits in Creepy Horror Flick
Image
“Never Let Go” isn’t interested in reinventing familiar formulas when it comes to its unsettling spin on sinister spirits visiting a secluded cabin in the woods. With its inclusion of a protective mother and her two young kids attempting to escape an evil entity plaguing their world, it’s also unafraid to invite minor comparisons to “Bird Box.” Still, director Alexandre Aja’s psychologically taut feature blazes its own trail, dropping us into the middle of one family’s ghastly, worsening crisis, craftily drawing its scares from their interpersonal and intrapersonal strife. Though not all of its clever ideas come together efficiently in the finale, its thematic ruminations on grief, sanity, rebellion and redemption are intrinsically intertwined to harrowing, claustrophobic effect, heightening the hallucinatory horrors and dread-soaked atmospheric pull.

Momma (Halle Berry) has kept her young fraternal twins Samuel (Anthony B. Jenkins) and Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) hidden away in her parents’ remote,...

‘Never Let Go’ Review | Halle Berry Terrifies, but This Horror Movie Grasps at Straws
Image
Imagine if Halle Berry told you the world just ended, and now you have to live out in the woods. Also you have to stay in Halle Berry’s house or else an evil force will get you. Also if you do leave, you have to be tied to Halle Berry’s house by a rope or else — again — the evil will get you. Also only Halle Berry can see the evil. Oh, and the protective power of Halle Berry’s house has to be recharged like a battery, and recharged with your love, so she’s going to have to repeatedly lock you in the cellar with the lights off until you give off the right vibes.

That’s the premise of Alexandre Aja’s horror thriller “Never Let Go,” and if you think about it, it’s a pretty kooky way to tell a story about faith. Scary...

‘Never Let Go’ Review: Halle Berry Hangs On For Dear Life In Gripping Psychological Horror Thriller
Image
French director Alexandre Aja has been known as a member of the horror helming fraternity called the “Splat Pack,” named for the extreme violence in their films. Certainly, many of his pictures, from the 2003 breakthrough Haute Tension and the 2006 remake of The Hills Have Eyes, to his exceptional, and most successful film to date, 2019’s Crawl — in which a family is trapped in the crawl space of their home as alligators surround them during a Category 5 hurricane in Florida (a personal favorite of Quentin Tarantino) — have proved his chops as a genre filmmaker. Now, he steps up to another level with a less gory and more psychological thriller style of film, Never Let Go, in which Halle Berry stars as a mother of twin boys who is traumatically haunted by her own lifelong demons, which she passes on to them in their remote house deep in the woods.

‘Never Let Go’ Review: Halle Berry Protects Her Sons from Invisible Evils in Horror Flick About the Contradictions of Parenthood
Image
For many parents, convincing children to listen to your hard-won wisdom and avoid making the same mistakes for themselves is a daunting challenge. Adults are placed in charge of the world because they’ve lived long enough to experience its dangers firsthand, but each new generation is born convinced that no harm could possibly come from playing with those matches or staying out past that curfew. The contradictory desire to shield our offspring from the traumas that shaped us while allowing them enough independence to become fully fledged adults is often one of the defining questions of parenthood.

Alexandre Aja’s “Never Let Go” illustrates that age-old parenting challenge with a very literal metaphor. A woman known only as Mama (Halle Berry) lives with her sons Samuel (Anthony B. Jenkins) and Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) in a remote forest cabin where mere survival is an all-encompassing task. Years have gone...

‘Never Let Go’ Review: Halle Berry Stokes the Ambiguity but Can’t Stop Alexandre Aja’s Horror Fairy Tale From Stalling
Image
Splat Pack veteran Alexandre Aja tries his hand at family-in-peril horror along the lines of the Quiet Place franchise with Never Let Go. But mostly, the French director just succeeds in making us miss his entertainingly trashy swerves into B-movie pulp, with creature features built around ravenously bitey carnivorous fish (Piranha 3D) or giant Florida gators riled up by a hurricane and flood (Crawl). Whatever their strengths and weaknesses, those movies were fun popcorn entertainment with teeth. Fun is banished from Aja’s latest, which starts out mildly intriguing and chalks up a few bracing jump scares before running out of juice.

Part of the problem with Kc Coughlin and Ryan Grassby’s feeble screenplay is the laboriousness of its setup. Halle Berry plays a woman, initially identified only as Momma, living in woodlands isolation in an old timber family home with her preteen nonidentical twin sons, Samuel (Anthony B. Jenkins...

Never Let Go Review: Halle Berry Leads Anxiety-Inducing Horror That Makes For A Better Family Drama
Image
Never Let Go is the kind of film you have to go into knowing almost nothing about. Directed by Alexandra Aja from a screenplay by Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, the Halle Berry-led horror film is a study in patience. The film, largely set inside and around a home in the forest, successfully separates us and its characters from the outside world. This forces us to ponder its themes and setup, as well as the evil that lurks real or perceived just outside its door. The horror film has an engrossing premise that remains engaging even in its lulls.

The 2024 survival film brings Halle Berry back to the horror genre for the first time in years by having her play the mother of two boys who are survivors after the world ended. Never Let Go Review: Halle Berry Soars in Chilling Apocalyptic Film
Image
Halle Berry is back in the spotlight with yet another role that strips her (a bit) of her timeless beauty for the sake of yet another vulnerable, emotionally raw portrayal following Bruised, her directorial debut for Netflix. Our recent in-person interview with the Academy Award winner confirms our suspicions that she, indeed, does not age. Must be nice. And on that note, it's hard to believe she is still the only Black woman to win a Best Actress Oscar, and her latest outing for Never Let Go certainly reminds us of her on-screen talents that earned her said trophy.

Regarding the film's title no, this isn't a nod to Kate Winslet's iconic line from Titanic, but rather an important rule the new film's perpetually distressed mother (Berry) orders her two young sons to obey each and every day as they carry out their dangerous existence in the wilderness. No spoilers,...

Never Let Go Trailer Sees Halle Berry Protecting her Sons Against an Evil Monster
Image
Alexandre Aja, the director of horror gems like Crawl, is back for another stab at the genre, and this time, he has a Hollywood legend in the lead. Halle Berry stars in Never Let Go, Aja's attempt to tackle the folk horror genre, which has the production backup of Deadpool & Wolverine's Shawn Levy. The film is based on a script by Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, who were working alongside Mark Romanek at first but who ultimately left the project.

The film stars Berry alongside newcomers Percy Daggs IV and Anthony B. Jenkins. Berry plays a mother who's taking care of her two children while staying in a remote cabin. The family has always been under the threat of an evil spirit, but their strong bond has been able to keep them safe. The problem is that one of the two brothers stops "believing," and they suddenly have to...

Never Let Go Trailer: Halle Berry Faces A Fight For Survival In New Alexandre Aja Horror Movie
Image

But if the atmospheric first trailer for Aja's post-apocalyptic psychological thriller is anything to go by, then we suspect the danger facing Berry and her brood may well reside a little closer to, well, home. Check it out below and you'll see what we mean:

"Life's been tough on you boys since the world ended," admits a visibly fraught Berry at the beginning of this foreboding latest look at Never Let Go — and honestly, it does seem like it. Set in a distinctly The Road/A Quiet Place evocative slab of post-apocalyptic rural Americana,...

Halle Berry Battles Evil Spirit in ‘Never Let Go’ Horror-Thriller Trailer
Image
Halle Berry plays a mother with twin sons battling an evil spirit closing in on their wilderness home after a world-ending event in the trailer for Lionsgate’s Never Let Go, which dropped Thursday.

In the horror-thriller, director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Crawl) has the remote house in the woods fitted with a long ropes to enable mother and sons to remain connected at all times as unseen dangers approach.

“The evil out there is clever. One touch without a rope is all it takes,” Berry’s character tells her sons at one point in the trailer, as they commit to keep tethered to the ropes for safety and connection. But as demonic forces engulf their off-the-grid house, one of the twins questions whether evil exists.

And that breaks the family bond and triggers an all-out battle for survival. “That rope is your lifeline. Never let go. Say it,...

Never Let Go trailer | Something lurks in the woods in Alexandre Aja’s latest frightfest
Halle Berry
Halle Berry stars a desperate mother in Alexandre Aja’s latest horror film. Watch the first Never Let Go trailer below.

Switchblade Romance, Alexandre Aja’s gnarly slasher, made the French director into a talent to watch in 2003. After that, Aja has created a successful career in Hollywood, earning him a reputation of being able to turn out solid genre fare on time and with a relatively small budget.

Never Let Go, Lionsgate’s latest horror film, might just be his scariest film to date. Starring Halle Berry as a desperate mother, trying to keep her sons safe from an unseen evil, it all looks absolutely terrifying.

See for yourself. Watch the first Never Let Go trailer below.

Written by Kc Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, the film looks economically made with a small cast, few locations but maximum scares. Aja directed 2021’s Oxygen for Netflix, another film that kept things...
