Benjamin To

Orthodox review – a misery-inducing debut
A bare-knuckle-fighting Orthodox Jewish butcher goes to hell and back, taking us with him

Prune back the shots of hard men looking balefully into the middle distance and you’re left with the shrivelled branches of an undernourished debut feature by British actor turned director David Leon. The novelty of having an Orthodox Jewish butcher – Benjamin, played by the always interesting Stephen Graham – bobbing above the poverty line, with funds secured on the bare-knuckle boxing circuit, is swept aside in favour of a conventional and often confusing crime story whose tonal barometer has just one setting: abject misery. Michael Smiley crops up as machiavellian enforcer Shannon, who sends hapless dupe Benjamin to hell and back while in the pocket of an ominous cadre of Jewish clerics.

Nicholas Sparks at an event for The Lucky One (2012)
Nicholas Sparks Is Being Sued for Racism, Anti-Semitism, and Homophobia
Nicholas Sparks at an event for The Lucky One (2012)
According to a new lawsuit, Nicholas Sparks isn't content with just one type of discrimination. Saul Hillel Benjamin, former headmaster of Sparks's Epiphany School for Global Studies, alleges that the author made racist, anti-Semitic, and homophobic remarks during Benjamin's time running the school. (Had he also decided to insult women, Sparks would have hit for the bigotry cycle.) Some highlights: Sparks telling Benjamin that the school's lack of black students was because they "can't do the academic work"; Sparks forcing Benjamin to publicly explain his Jewish heritage as "a vocal group of parents pilloried Mr. Benjamin"; and Sparks brushing off students' call for a "homo-caust" at the school. To make sure nobody believed the allegations, Sparks also allegedly told Benjamin's wife that the headmaster was suffering from Alzheimer's disease, without even making him a notebook of their memories together first. Sparks's lawyer calls the suit "completely ludicrous and offensive." Read...

Nicholas Sparks Sued: Ex-Headmaster Says Author Is Racist, Anti-Semitic & Homophobic
Nicholas Sparks, the beloved author of numerous love story novels, is on the receiving end of a lawsuit from a former employee who claims Sparks is racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic.

Nicholas Sparks Sued

Saul Hillel Benjamin, the ex-headmaster of Sparks’ Epiphany School for Global Studies, is suing the author for wrongful termination, reports TMZ. According to Benjamin’s lawsuit, throughout his time at the Christian school, Sparks displayed the mindset of a racist and homophobic anti-Semite.

Benjamin, upon realizing that only 2 of the 514 students enrolled at the North Carolina school were African American, attempted to start a dialogue about having a more diverse student body. In reply to Benajmin’s inquiry, Sparks allegedly said, “Black students are too poor and can’t do the academic work.”

Sparks supposedly was also not too keen on the Lgbt student body. According to Benjamin, Sparks ignored bullying complaints made by gay students. Benjamin...
