Directed by Shahi Kabir, Ronth is a tale of two police officers: one young enough to trust the system and be idealistic in his approach, and the other experienced enough to have no hopes for it. More than a thriller, I felt that it was a strong social commentary on the police culture of India. I don’t deny that, at times, you feel that apart from resorting to unlawful practices, the policemen do not have much of an option. It reminds me of Sayaji Shinde’s character from the film Kurukshetra, where he complains to his boss that, because of his so-called honesty, he wasn’t able to take bribes and provide for his family. He quite unabashedly says that, with the kind of salary they got, it was not possible to support a family. That said, I do not back the entire corrupt culture, but it gives a...

A Still Of Panchayat(Photo Credit –Prime Video)
After three much-loved seasons, Panchayat Season 4 is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The village-set series, often called a modern-day version of Malgudi Days, is widely admired for its rustic charm, simple storytelling, and relatable characters. Many fans consider it one of the finest Indian web series of recent times. But if you are under the impression that Panchayat holds the crown as the highest-rated Indian show, think again.
The immensely popular film and TV database portal IMDb houses a list of the Top 250 TV Shows of All Time, featuring critically acclaimed titles from across the globe — from Breaking Bad (top ranked), Chernobyl, and Game of Thrones to Sherlock and Narcos. While Panchayat proudly finds a place on this coveted list, it’s not India’s top entry. Surprisingly, two other Indian series are ranked even higher.

The fixer, Rana Naidu, returns for a second season—but this time, it’s his own life that needs fixing more than anyone else’s. Netflix has just dropped all eight episodes of Rana Naidu Season 2, and while the show may have strayed from the gritty originality that defined its first season, it still delivers its fair share of drama and high-stakes action. The show truly excels in its unflinching portrayal of dysfunctional and troubled family dynamics, territory that mainstream entertainment often hesitates to explore. Alongside the returning main characters, the new season welcomes some fresh faces—and in the article below, we take a closer look at them.
Rana Daggubati as Rana Naidu
Rana Daggubati returns to play the titular character in the new season, and his usual charm and swag as the no-nonsense ‘fixer’ is going through the roofs. I don’t know about the rest of you,...

If you had asked me a couple of years back which import of American network television I imagined being used as a template for multiple adaptations and remakes, the Ann Bidermann-created seven-season Showtime drama “Ray Donovan” wouldn’t have been anywhere near the vicinity of that imagination. That could be accounted for by the show’s general mediocrity of quality, which coasted primarily on the performances of the central cast and a killer premise that can generate storylines for multiple seasons, but not necessarily compelling ones.
If examined further, the central issue of the source, which is also being extended to its official remake, “Rana Naidu,” is in its evocation of “The Sopranos” ethos—the professional world against the personal dilemma. “Ray Donovan,” and to that end Rana Naidu’s first season’s misstep, is in its expectation that its personal subplots are similar or more compelling than the central plot thread,...

Season 2 of Netflix India’s action-drama series Rana Naidu delivers a highly intense and action-packed experience, staying true to its character and tone, although it is arguably too far-fetched and superficial at times. As Rana has to deal with a new foe this season, Rauf Mirza, he has to once again take on the role of the protector of his family, especially with his children now being targeted. In Rana Naidu season 2’s ending, the protagonist has to face problems on multiple fronts, as Rauf has no intentions to let the Naidus live, while a business negotiation Rana had earlier tried to make now goes horribly wrong.
Spoiler Alert
What was Inspector Naveen’s real plan?
Inspector Naveen, one of the new characters in Rana Naidu season 2, happens to be a police officer planted in the life of Naina Naidu in order to get close to Rana and nab him.

A charming romantic comedy, full of heart, A Nice Indian Boy is an expression of love in all its forms: family love, friendship love, and true, happily ever after love. The story begins with a meet-cute that evolves into a beautiful journey, which has our heroes reaching their hands out for their own happily ever after (Hea). Naveen is a self-effacing, soft-spoken doctor with a boisterous mother, Megha, seemingly perfect sister, Arundhathi, and quiet father, Archit. The Gavaskars are outwardly accepting of Naveen’s sexuality but have never had to confront it in practice. In that recent Tamil film Kaadhal Enbadhu Podhu Udamai, when the daughter brings her same-sex lover home for dinner, the mother (Rohini) loses all control.
The mother in A Nice Indian Boy, Megha, played with warmth, curiosity, dread, and acceptance by Zarna Garg, is much more accommodating. I won’t say she is a true liberal, although Megha would like to think she is. When her son Naveen (Karan Soni) brings home his boyfriend Jay (Jonathan Groff), Mom Megha welcomes him as she ought to: a liberal Indian mom who wants only her son to be happy.
Of course, in actuality, life’s decisions are not that simply laid out on the table. It is this struggle to do the right thing which makes Megha one of the most special mothers I’ve seen on screen in recent times.

Levantine Films is giving A Nice Indian Boy a nationwide theatrical rollout, a decision that runs counter to current trends, where most romantic comedies premiere on streaming platforms.
The film follows Naveen (Karan Soni), a gay Indian-American doctor who introduces his boyfriend Jay (Jonathan Groff), a white artist raised by Indian adoptive parents, to his family. The story begins with a meeting at temple and develops into a wedding proposal that forces both men to address cultural expectations. It is adapted from a play by Madhuri Shekar and directed by Roshan Sethi.
Levantine CEO Benjamin Hung said the story stood out because it focused on family, tradition, and identity rather than a typical coming-out narrative. Soni’s character navigates pressure from both his upbringing and his own hesitation in embracing his heritage. Jay, meanwhile, acts as a cultural mirror—someone whose affection for Indian customs influences Naveen’s view of himself.

Although the future of same-sex marriage feels unclear in the U.S., wedding bells are ringing at the theaters this spring.

Ahead of the release of A Nice Indian Boy, now playing in the U.S. and Canada (preceding Andrew Ahn’s The Wedding Banquet remake’s April 18 release), stars Jonathan Groff and Karan Soni spoke to Deadline about why Bollywood “feels so gay” and what made the film “so fucking special.”

The pace is picking up with studio wide release A Minecraft Movie booming and plenty of indie fare to fill out behind from Neon’s Hell of a Summer and IFC Films’ The Luckiest Man in America to Fathom’s next installment of The Chosen and expansions of The Friend from Bleecker Street and Gkids’ re-release of Princess Mononoke.
CinemaCon, the biggest annual gathering of theater owners and studios, wrapped last night in Las Vegas. Exhibitors’ tempers were strained by a sour first quarter at the box office and there was an explosion of talk around longer theatrical windows which will for sure remain an ongoing conversation. That said, Q1 is behind us so here’s to hoping for a sustained period of more movies — many highlighted in Vegas — and higher-grossing movies to lift all boats.
Neon opens Hell Of A Summer on 1,255 screens after Thursday previews and early shows took in $215k.

In A Nice Indian Boy’s ending, Jay and Naveen get their dream Bollywood wedding after a whole lot of ups and downs. Unlike your typical rom-com, the film doesn’t go from meet-cute to conflict and then love right at the end. It instead focuses more on the family dynamic in Naveen’s life after he introduces Jay into it. It’ll definitely leave you in tears, because you don’t have to be gay to understand Naveen or Jay’s feelings, but you also get to see Naveen’s parents’ side of things from a deeper place that gives you two sides of a picture that’s often painted with just one color. A Nice Indian Boy begins with the wedding of Naveen’s elder sister, Arundhati, who looks to be delighted for her arranged marriage. Meanwhile, though Naveen has come out to his parents, he struggles with his dating life,...

Few movie scenes this year are as joyous as the central gay wedding in Roshan Sethi’s A Nice Indian Boy. It comes after weeks of turmoil that Karan Soni’s Naveen faces after falling in love with a white man (Jonathan Groff) and the way his traditional Indian family reacts to it all. The film serves as a unique twist on a familiar classic, driven by an incredible performance from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse‘s Soni.
A Nice Indian Boy Review
Naveen is a thirty-something gay man feeling lost in his relationship troubles while everybody seems to have it together. It’s not until a chance encounter while praying that he runs into Jay (Groff) that he feels like he’s finally found a partner worth fighting for. After bringing him home to his parents, things quickly fall apart.
The thing is, his family doesn’t seem to...

One of the breakouts at last year’s SXSW, Roshan Sethi’s “A Nice Indian Boy” is an utterly disarming cross-cultural, inter-generational rom-com buoyed by a sparkling ensemble. Cultural mores and expectations fuse effortlessly with a clever, delightful riff on “Ddlj” in the film’s decisive queering redirection.
Ahead of the film’s US release on April 4, Roshan Sethi and the film’s lead, Karan Soni, sat down with HighOnFilms’ Debanjan Dhar for an exclusive chat.
Debanjan Dhar: One of the best things about the film is how it knits together this intergenerational understanding, like there’s equal empathy and kindness for the parents and their perspective, as well as the sister’s side, not just the couple. Were those elements present in the original play itself? How did it evolve through the script and with you coming aboard?

Sometimes, I’m delighted to live in a world where we can get Picture This and A Nice Indian Boy, both English-language movies predominantly about the South Asian experience in the West, within a month of each other, and no one bats an eye. If only real life looked as easy. In A Nice Indian Boy, Naveen (Karan Soni) is a not-so-closeted Indian-American who is eager to find love while still being bothered about how the world perceives him. In this context, the nice “Indian boy” happens to be a White man named Jay (Jonathan Groff), who was raised in an Indian household, loves Lord Ganesha, and belts out Ddlj songs in the middle of the street. While Naveen and Jay ultimately want the same thing for themselves, their approach to life is completely different, yet this isn’t a will-they-won’t-they story; it’s a lot more than just that.

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival. Wayfarer Studios releases “A Nice Indian Boy” in select theaters Friday, April 4.
I did not have Jonathan Groff singing “Tujhe Dekha To Yeh Jana Sanam” on my 2024 bingo card. The Broadway actor humbly steps into Indian culture in Roshan Sethi’s “A Nice Indian Boy,” which repeatedly connects back to Aditya Chopra’s “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” — the film that originated “Tujhe Dekha”.
Written by Eric Randall (and based on Madhuri Shekar’s play), “A Nice Indian Boy” is all about subverting stereotypes about Indian culture, both within and outside of the community. The title itself is a cheeky twist on every aunty’s favorite refrain: that when a girl is of the right age, she or her family will find her a “nice Indian boy” to settle down with.

Anika Noni Rose has responded to Disney’s decision to cancel Tiana, the planned animated musical series following The Princess and the Frog. The Tony-winning actress, who originally voiced Tiana in the 2009 film, shared her thoughts on Instagram, calling the cancellation disappointing while encouraging fans to support the upcoming one-off special that will take its place.
Rose acknowledged the support she received following the news, stating, “I too am deeply disappointed that the continuation of Tiana’s journey in series form has been cut short.” The actress highlighted the dedication of those involved in the project, including writer-director Joyce Sherri, longtime Disney creative leader Jenn Lee, and the music team.
Originally announced during a 2020 Disney investor event, Tiana was set to continue the story of Disney’s first Black princess beyond the film. However, the series was among several long-form animated projects scrapped as Walt Disney Animation Studios shifts its focus to shorter-form content.

Last week, Disney unceremoniously scrapped an animated series based on The Princess and the Frog. Since the series had been in the works for five years, fans, including Tiana herself, were naturally upset. Anika Noni Rose, who voiced Tiana in The Princess and the Frog, took to Instagram to voice her displeasure with the move.

“The Princess and the Frog” actress Anika Noni Rose is “disappointed” in Disney after the IP did not get its happily ever after, as promised.
Rose was set to reprise her lead voiceover role as Princess Tiana for an eponymous Disney+ sequel series. The show was announced in 2020, more than a decade after “The Princess and the Frog” debuted in 2009. In March 2025, “Tiana” was officially scrapped by the streamer; a source told IndieWire that the series went through several different creative teams, and the production costs were too high to continue. In lieu of the series, a short-form project titled “Tiana Special Event” is now in the works for Disney+.

Children's movies, especially animated features, should be given more credit for their masterful and artistic storytelling, which can stay with people for years. There are plenty of iconic and beloved stories from all ages and studios, but sometimes, these stories can get more sinister than audiences expect.
Some of the most famous children's movies also include some of the most horrific and devastating deaths in cinematic history. For these to be in children's films makes it even more sour as their audiences will most likely retain that memory forever. Whether for better or for worse, children's films can sometimes have the most horrific deaths to ever see put to screen.
Ray Finally Gets to Evangeline The Princess and the Frog (2009)
The Princess and the Frog is easily one of Disney's most underrated princess movies of all time. Audiences adored the classic and immaculate animation, catchy songs, beautiful story and especially its lively characters.

Movies have always had a way of connecting people and communities, as well as challenging the typical norms of society. While everyone loves a classic rom-com, things go up a notch when a movie tries to break barriers by telling stories that, in one way or another, push against societal taboos, especially when it comes to love, acceptance, and identity.
Roshan Sethi’s A Nice Indian Boy is such a movie that promises to bring a refreshing take on romance by exploring a same-sex relationship, that too with a mix of traditional Indian family values. With changing times, more and more filmmakers have embraced such storylines.

Walt Disney Animation Studios has officially scrapped its Tiana series, which was set to serve as a follow-up to The Princess and The Frog.
According to THR, the project was cancelled as part of the studio's new strategy, which involves moving away from all original longform animated content for the Disney+ streaming service. A spokesperson confirmed there "will be some layoffs in its Vancouver studio as a result of this shift in business strategy."
In addition to Tiana, an untitled feature-length project has also been shelved.
First announced back in 2020, Tiana was being developed as a musical featuring Anika Noni Rose reprising her lead role from the 2009 animated film. The trade report mentions that, despite best efforts, "including several changes to the creative team, Tiana ultimately could not get to where it needed to be given production costs."

Something Better Than Marvel Rivals is Coming and You Can Thank Avengers: Endgame Directors For That
Marvel Rivals has changed the live service genre and given Marvel fans something to celebrate and enjoy. But for all its greatness, it is still a live service game. The Russo Brothers have expressed interest in developing video games tied to Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Given their history with Marvel Studios, if they bring the same level of care and ambition to a Marvel game, we could be looking at one of the greatest games ever.

With a Tiana original special now the focus, we hear, it seems that creatively a Tiana series had been going nowhere fast for several years. That creative funk was why all we’ve seen the past four years is a single image from the proposed Tiana series.

Disney friendships are pivotal to many of the company's stories. Whether existing between humans, animals, or toys, these relationships allow audiences to see themselves in these characters and relate to the larger story. Many of Disney's dynamic duos center around male characters, including Woody and Buzz, Mater and Lightning McQueen, and Baloo and Mowgli, to name a few.
Disney's female friendships are far more sparse, or exist solely within a family bond, such as Anna and Elsa. Disney has made an effort since the massive success of Frozen to emphasize the power of female relationships both inside and outside of family. And one could argue that this trend truly began with Charlotte and Tiana in The Princess and the Frog. Maleficent and Encanto feature strong female characters who learn to overcome their differences and embrace each other's unique qualities, letting love shine through. With new and powerful friendships emerging, fans...

Disney couples are emblematic of the love we aspire to procure. With pairs like Nala and Simba, Eugene and Rapunzel and Tiana and Naveen, it's easy to get lost in an idealistic vision of love. However, not all Disney couples are held in the same regard. Viewers have reexamined many only to reveal problematic undertones of power imbalances and manipulation.
Of course, relationships come in all forms and not all of them can be exceptional representations, but even some of Disney's most notable films display depictions of love that should do anything but set an example for audiences. With so many growing up on Disney's classics, conceptions of romance can be twisted and lead to a devastating trajectory in one's love life. Rather than being swept up in the generalization that Disney has love down to a science, here are some examples that ask viewers to take a second look.
