Strange World Ended An Incredible 30-Year Disney Movie Rating Streak
Image
2022's Strange World had the ignominious fate of officially ending Disney Animation's CinemaScore ratings streak by scoring lower than any film in 31 years. Directed by Don Hall and Qui Nguyen and written by Nguyen, Strange World was the third major animated feature to be released by Disney in 2022 after Pixar’s Turning Red and Lightyear. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Jaboukie Young-White, Gabrielle Union, Dennis Quaid, and Lucy Liu, and Jonathan Melo, Strange World brings viewers into the fold of a new adventure and story centered on a family of explorers.

Strange World reviews from critics presented mixed opinions about the pulp adventure flick, which led to a Disney tradition being broken. The market research firm CinemaScore, which polls theater audiences after seeing the movie, has revealed that Strange World received a B, making it the first ever Walt Disney Animation Studios film to score below an A- according to CinemaScore's metrics.

Where to Watch Strange World
Image
Discover where to watch Strange World, Disney's latest computer-animated sci-fi feature directed by Don Hall and written and co-directed by Qui Nguyen, who also wrote Raya and the Last Dragon.

Strange World tells the story of the Clade family, who lives in the peaceful land of Avalonia. While the patriarch Searcher Clade, voiced by Jake Gyllenhaal was growing up, he followed around his explorer father who was determined to travel past the mountains that surrounded their homeland. During the expedition, Searcher stumbles upon a mysterious glowing green plant known as Pando, but he fails to convince his father Jaeger (Dennis Quad) to stop their journey so that they can learn more about the discovery. Sadly, Jaeger abandons his son and the rest of his team to continue toward the edge of the mountains and has not been heard from since. Twenty-five years later viewers find Searcher raising a family on Avalonia,...

Every Disney Easter Egg & Reference In Strange World
Image
As has become a tradition in Disney's animated films, Strange World features different references and Easter eggs to the company's long cinematic legacy. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Searcher, a young man forced into the explorer's lifestyle by his father, beloved adventurer Jaeger Clade (Dennis Quaid). Their paths diverge when Searcher, having found an energy source in the plant-like Pando, decides to stay in his town, prompting Jaeger to continue his expedition alone. Years later, Searcher, his wife, Meridian (Gabrielle Union), and their son, Ethan (Jaboukie Young-White), have to venture inside their world to fix a Pando crisis, a journey that reunites them with Jaeger.

Easter eggs are customary in projects from Walt Disney Animation Studios. Despite not existing in a cohesive universe, the company's films famously feature references to each other, such as Frozen, including cameos by Rapunzel and Flynn Rider and Nick Wilde's design from Zootopia appearing in Big Hero 6.

‘Strange World’ Review (Disney+)
Image
Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, Jaboukie Young-White, Gabrielle Union, Lucy Liu | Written by Qui Nguyen | Directed by Don Hall

A journey deep into an uncharted and treacherous land, where fantastical creatures await the legendary Clades – a family of explorers whose differences threaten to topple their latest, and by far most crucial, mission.

It’s extremely disappointing to see how Disney’s new animated feature Strange World came out. It’s the sixty-first film released by the juggernaut studio, following the immense success of their previous projects such as Encanto and the wildly popular Frozen II.

Although director Don Hall definitely had some bold ideas for where this film could go, he ultimately ended up crafting a massively forgettable film that strangely forgets to inject the heart and joy into the story, which is a hugely important aspect of any Disney movie.

Despite the fact that this movie focuses on some crazy,...

How to Watch Strange World: Streaming and Blu-ray Release Details
Image
Though the animation titan that is the Walt Disney Company has mostly been sticking to its roots with infectiously fun musicals such as Encanto (2021) and Frozen II (2019), the studio has also been exploring animated expeditions into more adventurous stories. Recently, there have been a wide variety of these non-musical adventures, including hit films like Raya and the Last Dragon (2021), Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018), and Zootopia (2016), just to name a few. But their latest adventure takes a page out of some of Disney's most legendary exploratory films like Pixar's Up (2009) and the criminally underrated Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001). Strange World (2022) reunites the duo behind the Academy Award-nominated Raya and the Last Dragon, directors Don Hall and Qui Nguyen, bringing with them an all-new adventure packed to the brim with exploration and excitement. The latest from Walt Disney Animation Studios follows the Clade family, more specifically the optimistic Ethan Clade (Jaboukie Young White...

‘Strange World’ Director on What Research Went Into Animated Film
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Disney Animation’s Strange World, which took inspiration from adventures such as King Kong and Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth, is about discovery and family, and the characters learning that their world is just as much a living thing as they are.

The story centers on three generations of a family: Searcher Clade (Jake Gyllenhaal), a farmer who as a teen discovered a plant-based power source that changed the world; Searcher’s dad, Jaeger (Dennis Quaid), a legendary explorer; and Searcher’s son Ethan (Jaboukie Young-White), a 16-year-old who helps on the farm but is unsure about following in his father’s footsteps. Their home, in Avalonia, is in trouble — the power source is fading — setting in motion a journey beneath the surface into a fantastical, colorful world to find the root of the problem. This world includes...

‘Strange World’ Gets Disney+ Release Date
Image
Disney’s Strange World is heading to Disney+ on December 23, the streamer announced Monday.

The animated family film has been a disappointment at the box office, grossing 30.4M domestically since its weak opening over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, and 50.4M worldwide.

The Walt Disney Animation Studios pic centers around a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land alongside a motley crew that includes a mischievous blob called Splat; Legend, the family dog; and a slew of ravenous creatures.

The A-list voice cast is led by Jake Gyllenhaal as Searcher Clade, a family man who finds himself out of his element on an unpredictable mission, and Dennis Quaid as Searcher’s larger-than-life explorer father, Jaeger, along with Jaboukie Young-White as Searcher’s 16-year-old, adventure-seeking son, Ethan, Gabrielle Union as Meridian Clade, an accomplished pilot and Searcher’s partner in all things; and Lucy Liu as Callisto Mal,...

Strange World Moments That Went Right Over Kids' Heads
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Strange World."

"Strange World" is full of adventure and heart. /Film writer Josh Spiegel called it "singular and unforgettable," and for good reason. "Strange World" is a magnificently detailed world that immerses the audience in wonder, a real visual treat. Co-written and co-directed by Don Hall and Qui Nguyen, the adventure fantasy follows the Clades clan in their community of Avalonia. Surrounded by craggy, snow-capped mountains, they desperately need to "make a discovery that could change Avalonia," as the character Jaeger (Dennis Quaid) says in a pivotal early scene. Their village is barely getting by and residents humbly accept their modest lifestyle, if not headstrong for something more.

Beneath the shiny exterior, "Strange World" pulses with rich themes spanning capitalism, inherited toxicity, and existential questions about purpose. Kids will most assuredly not pick up on many of these nuanced conversations, which also include what it...

Pixar's Elemental Director On Avoiding Strange World's Box Office Fate
Image
Elemental director Peter Sohn explains his approach to avoiding a Strange World-esque box office flop. Strange World hit theaters over the holiday Thanksgiving weekend, opening to an unexpected and dismal showing as well as earning mixed reviews from audiences and critics. Directed by Don Hall and Qui Nguyen and written by Nguyen, Strange World was the third Disney animated feature to be released in 2022 after Turning Red and Lightyear, the latter of which faced a similarly lackluster debut. Given the disappointing showings from two of this year's animated features, the joint Pixar and Disney Animated Studios venture Elemental could be facing an uphill battle when it premieres next year.

During a conversation with Variety, Elemental director Peter Sohn was asked how the upcoming Pixar release will go about appealing to a mass audience in order to avoid underperforming at the box office as Strange World did. Sohn's response points...

Disney's Strange World Can't Help But Feel Unique In The Pandemic Age
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Strange World."

It's been said that "life imitates art," but the expression also works the way around in terms of "writing what you know." Taking inspiration from your own lived experience has been responsible for some of the most powerful stories of the ages like "Almost Famous" by Cameron Crowe, Steven Spielberg's latest masterpiece "The Fabelmans," or the upcoming Disney+ series "American Born Chinese," which is based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang. But I'm not sure that too many people out there want to relive the lockdown period of an ongoing pandemic through their entertainment just yet. There have definitely been recent projects that have tackled the topic in unique and inventive ways like the "Mythic Quest: Quarantine" special or Bo Burnham's "Inside," but it's probably better to put a general moratorium on movies about viruses or pandemics for a few years.

‘Strange World’ Crew on the Film’s Jules Verne Nod, the Environment and Queer Representation
Image
“Strange World” director Don Hall was thinking about his children and the world they would inherit when he got the idea for Disney’s latest animated feature. Hall, whose credits include “Raya and the Last Dragon,” says he wanted to tell a story about the environment. “This idea of the world existing on a back of a living thing was cool,” Hall says.

Hall and the team of animators looked into the body, the nervous system and even a body’s digestive system through a microscopic lens. He says, “We started seeing landscapes in actual microscopic imagery and I got really excited.” Hall says he let production designer Mehrdad Isvandi run wild with ideas over what the world could look like.

Screenwriter Qui Nguyen adds that while Hall had mapped out much of the story, it was pitched as “Indiana Jones meets National Lampoon’s Vacation.” But this was also about...

Disney's Strange World Early Version Was Darker With More Deaths
Image
Co-director Qui Nguyen reveals how Strange World had a much darker story when first envisioned. Walt Disney Animation Studios released their 61st feature film Strange World to a weak box office. Despite this, the film was critically acclaimed for its unique visuals and characters. The film centers on the Clade Family as they are thrust into a subterranean adventure after their source of energy suddenly begins dying and encounter odd creatures in an untamed world. Besides the fact that much of the film is inspired by classic pulp magazines, the story appears to be pretty straightforward and not much of its background has been revealed until recently.

Both Nguyen and Don Hall spoke with Muprhy's Multiverse about Strange World and how the story developed. Compared to the more family fun version that audiences ended up getting, the co-directors revealed that the film was initially going to be much darker. One...

‘Strange World’ director Don Hall talks about developing the film’s weird and strange settings [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
For “Strange World” director, Don Hall, creating the film’s incredible realms was definitely a challenge but one he saw as a beautiful challenge. “We did a lot of research into different biomes and living systems. Ultimately, what I really wanted is just to kind of create a blank space,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent Meet the Experts: Film Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).

He brought the blank canvas to the animators over at Disney and they let their imaginations go wild. “I was just sort of the cheerleader, you know, ushering them to go weirder, go stranger and just embrace the limits of their creativity, which was boundless. It led to a really unique, specific and beautiful world.”

Strange World Is Expected To Lose Disney 100 Million In Its Theatrical Run
Image
You know how the saying goes: If you build it, they will come. So when a studio does the exact opposite of "build it," well, I guess we can't be too surprised by the inevitable outcome.

The release of "Strange World" (you can read /Film's review by Josh Spiegel here) should've been cause for celebration. Not only is any project from the vaunted halls of Walt Disney Animation Studios worthy of our attention (especially at a time when animation as a medium struggles to receive its due), but doubly so for one that comes from such pulpy roots and features a bounty of family-friendly messages, too. Unfortunately, the animated film ended up making history for much less enviable reasons.

Over Thanksgiving weekend, "Strange World" debuted to a paltry amount of box office receipts after a noticeable lack of marketing. As the smoke clears, it's become apparent that the Don Hall...

Strange World Directors Don Hall And Qui Nguyen On Its 'Lucious, Epic Score' And That Big Reveal [Exclusive Interview]

Disney Animation's "Strange World" is now in theaters, and the movie about three generations of the Clade family finding themselves in a land unlike anything they've ever seen makes for a delightful film to see with your own family over the Thanksgiving holiday.

If you've seen "Strange World," you also know there's some surprises in store for the Clades as well as for the audience. I talked with director Don Hall and writer/co-director Qui Nguyen about that major reveal (and where they got inspiration for it), the movie's score and its "Raiders of the Lost Ark" feel, and how the game in the movie actually exists in our not-so-strange world. I also got to ask Nguyen about another Disney project he's working on with Ryan Reynolds.

This interview contains spoilers for "Strange World" and was lightly edited for clarity and brevity.

How A Character In Disney's Strange World Recalls The Late, Great Firefly
Image
"Resident Alien" star Alan Tudyk has had a number of memorable roles throughout his career. In terms of movies, long-time fans look back fondly on the parts he played in "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story," "A Knight's Tale," and "Tucker & Dale vs Evil." He even had that memorable guest spot on an episode of "Frasier" as the new owner of Kacl that Dr. Crane takes under his wing. Although, his most beloved role to date is probably still the fun-loving pilot Hoban "Wash" Washburne from Joss Whedon's "Firefly" and its feature film sequel "Serenity."

However, to many members of his modern fanbase, Tudyk is likely more known for his voiceover work. He can be heard in "Ice Age," "Batman: The Brave and the Bold," "Young Justice," "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," and HBO's "Harley Quinn," among many other projects across film, TV, video games, and more. Every Main Character In Strange World Ranked Worst To Best

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the movie "Strange World."

"Strange World" tests the bonds of love and the importance of family through a sci-fi adventure. Director Don Hall and writer/co-director Qui Nguyen have sculpted an extraordinary world full of bizarre creatures. In crafting such a magnificent world, the creative team sought out pulp fiction and films like "The Matrix," approaching the environment with an eye toward flipping expectations. Instead of crafting your usual landscapes littered with trees and rocks, production designer Mehrdad Isvandi wanted to bring a sense of whimsy and playful colors to the screen. In the way Isvandi uses "every color except green ... our brains don't know how to feel." Isvandi adds, "We challenged ourselves to design a world that felt otherworldly yet grounded and relatable, and also not too beautiful to be distracting."

With a voice cast that includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Lucy Liu, and Dennis Quaid,...

Strange World director explains new Disney film’s huge twist
Image
The directors of the newly released Disney film Strange World have explained the big twist.

Strange World focuses on the Clades, a family of renowned explorers who must work together to journey across a mysterous land and save a powerful resource called the Pando.

However, all is not quite as it seems – towards the end of the film, the Clades learn something about their world which usurps all expectations.

Spoilers follow for Strange World – you have been warned!

As it turns out, the region of Avalonia in which the Clades live is actually situated atop the shell of a huge turtle, swimming around the oceans.

What’s more, the creatures the Clades encounter attacking the Pando in the “Strange World” are in fact aspects of the turtle’s immune system.

The Pando plant around which Avalonia has structured its society is poisonous to the giant turtle – leading the Clades to...

Strange World Directors Wanted The Movie To Be More Like The Matrix Than Men In Black [Exclusive]

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for "Strange World."

In the new Disney Animation film, "Strange World," the Clade family lives in a land nestled in the center of a mountain range. The mountains are unpassable ... not that Jaeger Clade (voiced by Dennis Quaid) believes that. He and a group of explorers set off to try to find out what's on the other side of the range, but when his son Searcher (voiced by Jake Gyllenhaal) finds a plant that can bring electricity to the land, he and the rest of the group turn back. Jaeger isn't seen again for 25 years.

When things start going wrong with their powers source, the land's leader, Callisto (voice of Lucy Liu), calls on Searcher — now a farmer of these plants — to help her discover the issue. Making ‘Strange World’: The Origin, Evolution and Progressive Representation of Disney Animation’s Sci-Fi Adventure
Image
Every so often, Disney Animation veers from the path.

Veteran Disney producer Don Hahn said he called it “turning left at the castle.” His analogy was built on theme park geography: instead of heading through the castle to Fantasyland, you would veer left, into Adventureland – an area full of hidden danger, wild creatures and very few songs.

This week, Walt Disney Animation Studios turns left again with their 61st feature “Strange World,” a story set in a mythological realm that follows three generations – manly adventurer Jaeger Clade (Dennis Quaid), his more intellectual son Searcher Clade (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Searcher’s teen son Ethan (Jaboukie Young-White) – as they explore a world beneath our own full of bizarre, deadly creatures and equally odd geography. They’re there in an attempt to save our world but uncover a threat that could destroy both.

Why Disney Kids Of All Ages Should See Strange World With Their Parents
Image
With the holiday season quickly approaching, one of the best things to do with the family around this time of the year is to watch movies together. While there are certainly staples featuring the likes of Charlie Brown, the Miser Brothers, Buddy the Elf, or Jack McClane, it can sometimes be difficult to find a movie that truly appeals to the whole family. Well, Walt Disney Pictures has the solution for that problem with their great new film called "Strange World."

Inspired by the pulp adventures of the early 20th century, the film follows the legendary Clade family, who are known to be innovators and adventurers. When their homeland of Avalonia is in danger, they must embark on a treacherous expedition through uncharted land to get to the bottom of their problems. But in order to do that, they must also confront their unresolved issues with each other and get...

Will There Be A Strange World 2? Everything We Know
Image
Warning: This post contains spoilers for Strange World

Disney has not shied away from greenlighting sequels to its animated films, Pixar included. Frozen II and the many Toy Story sequels are just some of the many examples. However, not every animated film is lucky enough to get a sequel, and it often depends on its success at the box office and general interest. Strange World, released in theaters on November 23, is Disney’s latest animated film. Will it get a sequel in Strange World 2? Here’s what to know.

Strange World, directed by Don Hall and Qui Nguyen, who worked together on Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon, tells the story of the Clades, an explorer family who discovers a new world that will change the way they see theirs, as well as their relationships with each other. The animated film features the voice talents of Jake Gyllenhaal, Jaboukie Young-White,...

How to Watch ‘Strange World': Is the Disney Movie Streaming?
Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Jaboukie Young-White in Strange World (2022)
Disney’s newest animated family film is out just in time for Thanksgiving weekend. “Strange World” is the first new film from Walt Disney Animation Studios since 2021’s “Encanto,” and hails from some of the same filmmakers as “Raya and the Last Dragon.” Here’s all you need to know to watch the movie, which is from co-directors Don Hall and Qui Nguyen (who also wrote the screenplay).

When Does “Strange World” Come Out?

The animated film opened on Nov. 23.

Is “Strange World” Streaming or in Theaters?

Disney released the film exclusively in theaters, so as of right now the only way to see it is in a movie theater. Check your local listings.

That said, expect it to be streaming on Disney+ sooner rather than later. Perhaps maybe in time for Christmas, like how Disney released “Encanto” on Disney+ just 30 days after it hit theaters.

Director Don Hall and co-director Qui Nguyen's new movie, Strange World, is an original action-packed adventure focused on the Clades, a family led by legendary explorer Jaeger Clade voiced by Dennis Quaid. When Jaeger goes missing, his son Searcher (Jake Gyllenhaal) becomes the hometown hero for discovering a new plant called Pando that packs the power to keep the town of Avalonia abuzz. Years later when Searcher is enjoying the good life with his wife (Gabrielle Union) and son (Jaboukie Young-White), he's shocked to learn that Pando isn't the never-ending miracle crop he once thought. In fact, Pando is dying and Searcher needs to venture under the surface of Avalonia in order to save it.

Strange World Ending Explained (In Detail)
Image
Warning: This post contains spoilers for Strange World

Strange World ending explained. Directed by Don Hall and Qui Nguyen, who also wrote the screenplay, Strange World joins Disney’s animated slate. The third major animation to be released by the studio in 2022, after Pixar’s Turning Red and Lightyear, Strange World comes to theaters just in time for the holiday season, telling a new story of family and adventure.

Strange World takes audiences on a journey to the heart of Avalonia. After initially attempting to save pando from being destroyed, Searcher Clade (voice of Jake Gyllenhaal) and his son Ethan (voice of Jaboukie Young-White) realized that their world was a living thing that functioned much like their own bodies. Pando wasn’t being destroyed, but the living creatures living underground were trying to save it from dying precisely because Searcher’s idea to farm the resource was actually harming it.

Review: ‘Strange World’ Featuring the Voices of Jake Gyllenhaal and Dennis Quaid
Image

Disney introduces a new family of explorers to the list that includes Christopher Columbus, Marco Polo, Ferdinand Magellan, and James Cook in the animated adventure Strange World.

The 2022 animated film begins by introducing Jaeger Clade (voiced by Dennis Quaid), a big, brawny explorer from the small country Avalonia whose destiny – he believes – is to travel across the huge mountains that surround his country. Jaeger is determined to finally see what’s on the other side and, hopefully, become famous enough to deserve his own statue in the town square.

While on his latest expedition, his young son Searcher (voiced by Jake Gyllenhaal), who is terrified of almost everything, a klutz, and has to be saved by his father at least once during every adventure, discovers a plant that surges with electrical energy called Pando. He believes the plant could power all of Avalonia,...

Movie Review: Strange World
Image
That latest offering from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Strange World, proves to be an entertaining and remarkably endearing portrait of a slightly dysfunctional father and son relationship being mended and rebuilt through communication and mutual respect. It is a surprisingly solid family film that ultimately emerges as the wonderful story of an estranged father and son reconnecting after several years.

After a lengthy prelude that introduces the Clades – particularly Jaeger and his son Searcher – as they explore the land beyond the mountains of their village, the film jumps forward several years to show a grown Searcher (voiced by Jake Gyllenhaal) now considered a savior of the village after returning from the initial expedition with a miraculous plant that has since powered the village and allowed many significant technological advancements. Unfortunately, the plant now appears to be dying and it is decided that an expedition must be immediately mounted to locate...

Strange World Voice Cast Guide: What The Actors Look Like In Real Life
Image
Strange World voice cast guide — what the actors look like in real life. Disney has been consistent in releasing its animated films. Between Pixar and Disney Animation Studios, Strange World is joining an ever-growing list of well-told, and diverse, animations.

Directed by Don Hall and Qui Nguyen, who also wrote the screenplay, Strange World is being compared to the animated films Treasure Planet and Atlantis in its spirit, though it’s possible Strange World will be more financially successful than its adventure-filled predecessors. Disney’s latest tells the story of an explorer family who must work together to overcome an obstacle. The film has themes of family, legacy, and the pressures that are passed down from parents to children through the generations. Strange World’s voice cast includes many well-known actors, including Dennis Quaid. Here’s a full guide to the cast, which characters each actor voices, and what they look like.

Strange World Review
Image
Plot: While on a mission to save their farm and community, one time explorer Searcher Clade finds himself face to face with a father that went missing years before. Can they work together and find a common goal to save the place they call home? It’s a Strange World indeed.

Review: A few months back, I got a sneak preview of the latest from Disney Animation, Strange World. While we did not see much, it was enough to impress. The cast was solid, and the familial relations that it explored held my attention. On top of that was a collection of weird creatures and an adorable little fellow named Splat. Why? Because he Splats around and is ridiculously charming. It has no face or definition and is just a mini-blob-like creature that befriends one of the main characters. It was an exciting premise from the beginning; thankfully, it worked.

Strange World finally delivers the queer version of Disney magic we've been waiting for

Strange World Image: Walt Disney Studios In recent years, the parade of family friendly animated films has seemingly stumbled upon two paths diverging in a wood. On one side are the heavily merchandised, brightly colored, fart-joke-infused films geared at elementary school kids. On the other are the weepy, melancholic tales of loss,...

Gabrielle Union Interview: Strange World

Strange World follows the legendary Clade family on their most important and challenging adventure yet. While the Clade family works to save their home, they'll need to embrace each other's differences to successfully complete this mission. Strange World is co-directed by Don Hall (Big Hero 6) and Qui Nguyen (Raya And The Last Dragon) who also penned the screenplay.

Strange World stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, Gabrielle Union, Jaboukie Young-White, and Lucy Liu. Union voices Meridian Clade, the matriarch of the family, as Searcher's wife and Ethan's mom. Meridian's skills as a pilot prove invaluable as she flies their crew through this unknown world of unique wonders and dangerous creatures.

Box office preview: Thanksgiving offers everything from Disney animation to ‘Glass Onion,’ ‘Devotion’ and more
Image
This week’s box office preview is a little earlier (and longer) than usual, because on Tuesday evening, there will be previews for four new movies in wide release, as well as the expansion of Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” and Luca Guadagnino’s “Bones and All” nationwide.

Thanksgiving tends to be a rich and robust time at the box office, since people are off work and school on Black Friday (and some on Wednesday), offering the perfect time for a five-day weekend in which movies are a great pastime to do with the family before or after the feast. Because of the family aspect of Thanksgiving, family movies tend to do quite well, and Disney has almost single-handedly monopolized the weekend for many decades now.

Because of this, the strongest release of the extended five-day weekend will probably be Disney Animation Studios’ “Small World,” with the Mouse House trying...

Review: Strange World, Top-Notch World-Building, A-Level Animation
Image
For Strange World, its 61st feature-length animated film in its 85-year-old history, Disney Animation Studios tapped veteran animator Don Hall (Raya and the Last Dragon, Moana, Big Hero 6) and playwright-turned-screenwriter Qui Nguyen (Raya and the Last Dragon), the former to direct, the latter to write and co-direct. The result is a wildly imaginative, inventive science-fiction adventure wrapped around an intergenerational family drama, a coming-of-age tale, and easily digestible, but no less relevant, environmental themes. Altogether, that may not, when all is said and done, count among Disney’s all-time best animation-wise, but at a minimum, it belongs in the conversation. Wherever that conversation leads, however, first and foremost, attention should be given to Strange World's brilliant world-building, spectacular set pieces, and fast-moving narrative pace. Almost immediately...

Don Hall & Qui Ngyuen Interview: Strange World
Image
Strange World follows the legendary Clade family in a pulp-inspired animated adventure. When the Clades are given a new mission with world-saving stakes they are pulled into the adventure of a lifetime. However, if they want to succeed they'll have to learn to work together and see past each other's differences. Strange World is co-directed by Don Hall and Qui Nguyen, who also wrote the screenplay.

Hall has been an important part of Walt Disney Animation Studios, rising through the ranks from story artist on Tarzan to directing Big Hero 6 and Strange World. This is not Nguyen and Hall's first collaboration, with the pair working together on Raya And The Last Dragon, Hall served as director while Nguyen wrote the screenplay. Strange World is produced by Disney veteran Roy Conli with a star-studded cast including Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, Gabrielle Union, Jaboukie Young-White, and Lucy Liu.

‘Strange World’ Review: Disney Animation Goes Retro in an Unfunny and Overcomplicated Adventure
Image
By now, we’re all aware of how obsessed with nostalgia our current pop culture era finds itself. From “Stranger Things” to “The Crown” to reboots of everything from “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” to “Sex and the City,” everything old is new again. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ latest feature film, “Strange World,” takes retro to a whole new level, setting its family-oriented adventure yarn in a charmingly antique storybook city before rocketing its characters into a psychedelic undiscovered country.

The town of Avalonia lies at the center of a valley bordered on all sides by an impassable mountain range. Famous explorer Jaeger Clade (Dennis Quaid) goes missing while searching for a way through the mountains. His son Searcher (Jake Gyllenhaal) becomes the town’s new savior after discovering a plant called Pando. Their electrical fruits are farmed for Avalonia’s power source, allowing the city to blossom into a...

Strange World Review: A Trippy New Disney Adventure
Image
Psychedelia and the Walt Disney Company would not, on the surface, seem like two things that go hand in hand. Disney, even now that it encompasses so much of popular culture, is meant to represent family values of a sort, and psychedelia ... is not. But some of the films in the Disney Animation feature canon, such as "Dumbo" and "Fantasia," take certain flights of fancy that are hard to square even now in the studio's legacy, creative leaps that are so stark and remarkable largely because so few films the studio has produced in the modern era have the interest in really pushing the boundaries. Disney Animation's latest film, "Strange World," lives up to its name at least in terms of the artistry on display. The story surrounding that artistry is perhaps somewhat familiar, but it's offset by buoyant pacing, compelling world-building, and truly trippy visuals.

"Strange World," from director...

Strange World Review: Disney’s Latest Heartwarming Adventure Is Fun & Creative
Image
Walt Disney Animation Studios has had successful projects over the last few years to add to its longstanding legacy in storytelling. Films like Encanto, which celebrated Colombian culture under a magical landscape and Raya and the Last Dragon, which took on Southeast Asian cultures and mythology, continue to advance the studio’s approach to creating diverse stories. Don Hall and Qui Nguyen team up once more to continue this path of original animation after their collaboration on Raya. With Strange World, the duo captures a big adventure fit for an entire family this holiday season. This breathtaking, funny, and heartwarming tale is creativity and sincere storytelling at its finest.

Hall and Nguyen’s latest action-packed adventure introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades. Jake Gyllenhaal voices Searcher Clade, former explorer-turned-brilliant-farmer who proudly enjoys spending time with his family. His 16-year-old son, Ethan (voiced by Jaboukie Young-White) longs for adventure,...

‘Strange World’ Review: Disney Expands Its Horizons, and It’s a Beautiful Thing to See
Image
In “Strange World,” the world may be super-weird, but those who populate it are some of the most realistic and well rounded that Walt Disney Animation Studios has ever presented. Ergo, it’s the characters as much as the environment that make this vibrant, “Journey to the Center of the Earth”-style adventure movie colorful and diverse in all the best ways. Great as the people and places they explore may be, however, the relatively unimaginative story consigns this gorgeous toon to second-tier status — a notch below director Don Hall’s earlier “Big Hero 6” — instead of cracking the pantheon of Disney classics.

“Strange World” centers on a civilization called Avalonia, which is surrounded by “an impassable ring of mountains.” A sudden (and somewhat underexplained) resource shortage drives three generations of the intrepid Clade family to face the unknown. Swarthy, macho granddad Jaeger (voiced by Dennis Quaid) attempts to forge...

Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Jaboukie Young-White in Strange World (2022)
‘Strange World’ Review: Animated Disney Adventure Works Best When It Doesn’t Explain Its Own Themes
Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Jaboukie Young-White in Strange World (2022)
If there’s one piece of information that “Strange World,” the new sci-fi adventure from Walt Disney Animation Studios, will make sure you understand — by having characters explicitly discuss it on more occasions than necessary — it’s that the expectations parents have of their children, as a way to preserve or surpass their legacies, can become an unfair burden.

The son of a renowned and courageous explorer, Searcher Clade (voiced by Jake Gyllenhaal) didn’t want to carry on with his father’s mission. For the burly Jaeger Clade (a boisterous Dennis Quaid), the dad in question, venturing beyond the mountains that enclose their homeland of Avalonia held the only answer to ensure their future.

But the apple fell far from the tree. Rather than seeking resources elsewhere, Searcher earned the country’s respect by harnessing the power of a newly discovered plant: Pando. A quarter-century has passed since Jaeger...

‘Strange World’ Review: Jake Gyllenhaal and Gabrielle Union Lead Voice Cast in Disney Charmer
Image
Click here to read the full article.

The Clades, in the words of their comic patriarch, are born explorers. They crave adventure, live like nomads, love danger and aim to do the impossible. At the beginning of Strange World, an effortlessly charming adventure-comedy about father-son relationships from Disney’s Animation Studios, viewers are treated to a zippy montage of Jaeger (voiced by Dennis Quaid) and his son, Searcher (Jake Gyllenhaal), traversing coniferous forests, diving into the deep sea and hiking mountainous terrain. Their journeys take them far and make them legends, but never once have they seen the other side of the snowy summits surrounding their small city of Avalonia.

Naturally, Jaeger, a burly pioneer with an affection for the sound of his own voice, becomes obsessed with accomplishing this feat. Searcher, already disinclined to pursue the duo’s dangerous quests, couldn’t care less. When these differences come to light,...

‘Strange World’ Eyes 25M Offshore Bow In Slimmed-Down Release As Disney Opts To Skip Middle East & More Over Potential Censorship
Image
Exclusive: In step with domestic, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Strange World will make its offshore theatrical debut this week, and is eyeing an overseas start in the 21M-29M range. That’s lower than where a new animated movie from Disney might normally kick off, but the studio has taken a voluntary pass on more than 20 markets, choosing not to submit the film in countries where its LGBTQ+ content would have very likely forced demands for edits.

Strange World features a key character, Ethan (voiced by Jaboukie Young-White), who has a crush on another boy in the movie. This is an inherent part of the storyline. Unwilling to make any edits that would impact storytelling, Disney thus made the preemptive decision not to submit the movie to censorship authorities where there may have been challenges.

This includes all of the Middle East, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Vietnam, East Africa, West Africa, Maldives, Nepal and Bangladesh..

Per a Disney spokesperson, “In countries where we operate, we seek to share our stories in their original form as we and the artists involved have created them. If we make edits, because of legal or other considerations, they will be as narrow as possible. We will not make an edit where we believe it would impact the storytelling. In that circumstance, we will not distribute the content in that market.”

Dis has plenty of experience with censors, and notably over the past year, has refused to make requested edits when it comes to LGBTQ+ issues. Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story last winter was submitted across the Middle East where Saudi Arabia and Kuwait did not approve distribution certificates. Censors in the other markets asked for cuts which Disney opted not to make. Similarly, last year, Saudi Arabia and other markets sought cuts to Marvel’s Eternals which featured a same-sex kiss. Dis did not agree.

We understand Disney is evaluating movies on a title-by-title and territory-by-territory basis. In some cases, accepting a higher rating in lieu of cuts may be a possibility (that was long the practice for all studios in Russia).

By taking this preemptive step with Strange World, Dis is likely leaving money on the table. Last year’s Encanto did just under 25M in the same markets where Strange World is not releasing — and that itself was lower than it might have been given Encanto went out when many of those areas were battling Omicron.

Major overseas markets releasing Strange World on Wednesday include the UK, Italy, Korea and Japan. They will be followed by Australia, Brazil, Germany and Mexico on Thursday, and Spain on Friday.

As we have previously reported, Strange World, which also features characters voiced by Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid and Lucy Liu, will go directly to Disney+ in France, though this is down to the market’s stringent windowing system rather than a censorship issue. As regards the markets where it has not been submitted, no post-theatrical plans have as-yet been announced.

Strange World is directed by Don Hall and written by Raya and the Last Dragon’s Qui Nguyen who co-directs. The story follows a legendary family of explorers whose differences threaten to scuttle their latest crucial adventure.

Strange World's Original Board Game Helped The Filmmakers Keep A Big Theme Alive [Exclusive]
Image
While the creative and commercial aspects of filmmaking often clash due to the sometimes-differing ideologies of art and business, they are two sides of the same coin. One can't exist without the other: films of course cost money to make, and the money has to come from somewhere. One of the most lucrative areas to make money in entertainment is merchandising. If a major motion picture produces toys, apparel, high-end collectibles, and theme park experiences, that's another revenue stream for the filmmakers to keep on creating. Just ask George Lucas.

However, when done right, products that tie into a movie can create a harmonious relationship that serves both the financial and artistic aspects of a project. For example, while speaking to "Strange World" directors Don Hall and Qui Nguyen, /Film's Vanessa Armstrong learned that designer Cory Loftis created Ethan Clade's favorite card game, "Primal Outpost." But he didn't just come...
