Image
Exclusive: Academy Award winner Wendy Finerman, American Ninja Warrior host Matt Iseman, Revelations Entertainment boss Lori McCreary and This is Us star Jon Huertas are among the judges of a short film competition designed to celebrate healing and hope.

They will form a judging panel for Hero’s Journey: The Posttraumatic Growth Story Challenge, which has been created by the Boulder Crest Foundation, in association with online community portal Tongal and New York’s Atlantic Pictures.

Edmund Donovan Joins Willem Dafoe & Greta Lee In Kent Jones’ ‘Late Fame’
Image
Exclusive: Edmund Donovan, an up-and-comer known for roles in Alex Garland’s Civil War and Sundance genre-bender Your Monster, has landed a key role opposite Willem Dafoe and Greta Lee in Late Fame, the new film from director Kent Jones (Diane), which is entering production this week.

Written by May December‘s Samy Burch, Late Fame is a portrait of Ed Saxberger (Dafoe), a postal worker who wrote and published poetry such a long time ago that he’s forgotten he ever was a poet. When a group of young writers and students rediscovers one of his books and reclaims him as one of their own, he finds, against his better judgment, that he likes it: the attention and the hero worship draw him out of his solitary routines and renew his spirit. How quickly he starts to see himself as a true artist… how coarse and vulgar his old friends begin to look.

Ride Review: Harrowing Bull Rider Crime Drama Is Unexpectedly Shocking & Impressive
Image
Ride has a unique plot with unexpected twists, setting it apart from similar films in the same genre. The talented cast, including C. Thomas Howell, Annabeth Gish, and Jake Allyn, deliver standout performances that elevate Ride. The narrative structure can make the plot convoluted at times, leaving the audience confused by the disjointed ending.

On the surface, Ride is a typical film about a family of bull riders. Its talented cast and unique story set it apart from similar projects, resulting in a movie that leaves an impression despite its occasional confusing moments. The 2024 crime drama, directed by Jake Allyn (who plays Peter) and written by him and Josh Plasse (who portrays Peter's brother), revolves around the Hawkins a family living in Texas whose son just got out of prison after serving a four-year sentence and whose daughter is battling cancer.

Ride Review: A Gritty, Modern-Day Rodeo Drama
Image
Quick Links Families Can Be Messy in Ride Veteran Stars, Thanks for Your Service

When a film achieves a certain level of authenticity, it doesn't ultimately matter if the subject is foreign territory to the viewer. Maybe you grew up around bull riders, or maybe your only experience is riding a mechanical bull at that one bar in Hollywood that offers one.

Ride, in actor Jake Allyn's directorial debut, offers authenticity to the max as it brings us down south and explores a tough industry that may or may eat its young, as they say. From a layered and heartfelt script he wrote with co-star Josh Plasse, Allyn (No Man's Land) achieves true stardom here in a genuinely impactful drama that delves deep into universal issues such as addiction, losing health battles, messy families, and more. It's a can't-miss for folks in the Lone Star State and really anyone...

C. Thomas Howell on Working with Spielberg & Coppola at a Young Age and How He's Changed Since Then
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

C. Thomas Howell stars in Jake Allyn's new rodeo drama, Ride, about the struggles of three generations of bull riders and their attempts to raise money for a young girl's cancer treatment. While Howell's character doesn't compete in any rodeos during Ride, just one look at his cowboy hat-wearing persona and withered look and you can tell he's been around the block in this biz as he watches his son (Allyn) try to make a name for himself in the same sport. In real life, Howell has been acting since his childhood years and is still keeping busy with projects today. "I was 13 when I did E.T., and I was 15 when I did The Outsiders," he said, continuing:

"I had a career as a young boy that I never anticipated, and I was very grateful for it. But I'm almost 58 now...

C. Thomas Howell & Jake Allyn on the Legit Cowboy Movie Ride
Image
Some traits skip a generation. Others, such as bull riding, don't necessarily follow the same pattern. Ride, a triumphant new indie film out of Texas, explores three generations in this tough industry and all that it has to offer. From director-star Jake Allyn (No Man's Land), Ride also benefits from an extremely talented supporting cast, including veteran character actor and former rodeo star C. Thomas Howell (The Outsiders). The heartfelt new drama is set in modern Texas but basks in decades-old traditions that have taken their toll on a hardened family trying to make it in the rodeo biz amid skyrocketing inflation and more. You'll jump for joy at times and find yourself hugging your pillow for comfort at others.

It's a wild ride, pun intended, and we recently caught up with Allyn and Howell in separate interviews to learn more about their real-life passion for rodeos, past work with certain icons,...

Roma Downey Says New Faith-Based Series The Baxters Is a ‘Hope Opera’
Image
Family ties and deep religious faith play an emotional tug of war with issues of infidelity and self-confidence in The Baxters. Touched by an Angel star Roma Downey feels the new faith-based series, in which she stars and is executive producer, couldn’t arrive at a better time.

“At the center [of the story] is this marriage that is loving and committed, and you know, we don't always get to see that on family dramas,” Downey told MovieWeb. “Just to see marriage modeled that way — they're the glue that holds the messiness of the family together.”

Things do get messy, in fact, and early on. The first season tracks the aftermath of Baxter daughter Kari’s (Ali Cobrin) startling discovery — her professor husband, Tim (Brandon Hirsch), has been having an affair with one of his students. Based on the No.1 New York Times best-selling book series by Karen Kingsbury, a prolific author who...

The Resurrection of Charles Manson review – evil-hippy horror looks for chills in desert
Charles Manson
This film isn’t really about Charles Manson, and it’s a total mess, but there’s fun to be found in its ragged, plothole-filled thrills

This shambolic but not entirely uninteresting low-budget horror flick clearly aims to cash in on the continuing public fascination with 1960s cult leader Charles Manson, who died in prison in 2017. However, it barely engages with Manson or the stories around his so-called “family” of followers, or what is significant, in cultural terms, about the murders they committed in Hollywood in 1969. Manson’s name here is little more than a boogieman – like Satan, or Hitler, or Freddie – to establish a creepy tone for a story about evil hippies with malign intent. This is not to suggest that the film would have been better if it had been more Manson-y, just that it is a missed opportunity to add more texture.

The first act introduces us to a good-looking,...

‘The Resurrection of Charles Manson’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Katherine Hughes, Josh Plasse, Frank Grillo, Jaime King, Sarah Dumont, Sydelle Noel, Will Peltz | Written by Brev Moss, Josh Plasse | Directed by Remy Grillo

If we’re being honest, there’s probably been enough TV shows, films and documentaries about Charles Manson to last my lifetime and many others. Even Quentin Tarantino got in on the act a few years ago with Once Upon Time In Hollywood but that doesn’t seem to be stopping directors continuing to make them. They are obviously still popular and people think they can add something new and interesting to everything else that has been told. The Resurrection of Charles Manson is the latest movie to try and do that.

This one is a little different because it doesn’t really feature Charles Manson himself, so that title is a little misleading. In it, a couple are putting in an audition tape for a film about Charles Manson.
