Amazon Prime Video has acquired the family drama series “The Baxters” starring Roma Downey and Ted McGinley. The faith-infused series is based on the bestselling novels by author Karen Kingsbury.

The series has been in the works since early 2018, when Downey announced plans to produce a series based on Kingsbury’s books for her LightWorkers Media streaming platform. A number of episodes were produced but have never aired on LightWorkers or any other outlet. The deal with Prime Video comes as Amazon has heightened its focus on faith-based, family-friendly and uplifting series and movies.

This shambolic but not entirely uninteresting low-budget horror flick clearly aims to cash in on the continuing public fascination with 1960s cult leader Charles Manson, who died in prison in 2017. However, it barely engages with Manson or the stories around his so-called “family” of followers, or what is significant, in cultural terms, about the murders they committed in Hollywood in 1969. Manson’s name here is little more than a boogieman – like Satan, or Hitler, or Freddie – to establish a creepy tone for a story about evil hippies with malign intent. This is not to suggest that the film would have been better if it had been more Manson-y, just that it is a missed opportunity to add more texture.

Exclusive: Will Peltz (Unfriended), Sarah Dumont (Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse) and Sydelle Noel (Glow) have signed on to star alongside Frank Grillo, Jaime King, Katherine Hughes and Josh Plasse in the horror-thriller Man’s Son, with Voltage Pictures coming aboard to launch international sales ahead of the upcoming Marché du Film.

The XYZ Films title from director Remy Grillo centers on a young couple (Hughes and Plasse) hoping to create an aesthetically pleasing audition tape for an up-and-coming Charles Manson film. When they choose an eclectic desert Airbnb as the perfect backdrop, the dark events of the audition material slowly slip into their reality, until they find themselves intertwined in an occult, sinister plot led by King and Grillo’s characters.

Plasse and Brev Moss wrote the script, which is inspired by modern occult activity in the California desert, with production to kick off in Yucca Valley, California this month.

The story centers around a young couple hoping to create an aesthetically pleasing audition tape for an up-and-coming Charles Manson film. Josh Plasse and Brev Moss wrote the screenplay, which is inspired by Occult activity in the California desert. Cameras are schedule to roll in March in Yucca Valley, California.

Dare Angel will produce in partnership with Mi Nene. Producers include Plasse, Shakira Barrera, Conor Allyn, and Johnny James Fiore. Bobby McMichael, Chido Nwokocha, and Dennis Echelberger will serve as EPs. The film is casted by Lisa Zagoria, CSA.

Exclusive: Well Go USA Entertainment has inked a deal to distribute and exec produce the rodeo crime drama Ride, alongside Conor Allyn and Jake Allyn’s Margate House Films—the company behind modern western No Man’s Land, the Tribeca-premiering I’m No Longer Here and the historical biopic Edge of the World starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

The film directed by Jake Allyn (No Man’s Land) is launching production in July in Stephenville, TX, the town commonly regarded as the rodeo circuit’s own “Cowboy Capital of the World.” It centers on former bull rider John Hawkins, who faces his toughest ride yet when his daughter’s cancer unexpectedly comes out of remission. Desperate to raise money for her treatment, and rejected by countless hospitals and rigid insurance policies, John abandons his principles—and, simultaneously, his sheriff wife—to partner with his estranged son Peter on a last-resort scramble for money.

Exclusive: Fledgling Georgia-based production outfit Southern Stories will produce and finance rodeo drama Ride from Conor and Jake Allyn, whose most recent feature No Man’s Land was picked up by IFC Films last month.

Based on an original screenplay from Jake Allyn and Josh Plasse (The Baxters), the feature will be directed by Conor Allyn (Walk. Ride. Rodeo), with plans to expand into series format. Leah Daniels Butler (Empire) is currently casting for a scheduled fall production.

Maggie Monteith (Swimming With Men) is producing through her recently launched Georgia-based label Southern Stories and Upton Films, alongside James Gibb (V Wars). The film will be financed by Southern Stories.

The film will follow a successful couple whose relationship is tested when their child is diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Cracks in the family begin to show when their adopted son returns from prison to start a career as a bull rider.

Roma Downey and sitcom Ted McGinley are set to star in “The Baxters,” the scripted family drama for Downey’s LightWorkers Media platform based on the book series by Karen Kingsbury.

Production on six half-hour episodes of the streaming series begins this week in Los Angeles. LightWorkers is a joint venture of MGM TV, Downey and Mark Burnett, Downey’s husband who also heads MGM TV and Digital. Downey is shepherding the project with Will Packer and his Will Packer Media banner. It’s targeted for premiere late this year.

“The Baxters” revolves around the lives of the adult children of a large family headed by Downey and McGinley. The two TV veterans bring a level of visibility to the first scripted series to come from Downey’s streaming platform, which aims to offer uplifting news and information and faith- and family-centric entertainment content.
