On November 1, the Casting Society (CSA) announced nominees for their 40th Annual Artios Awards, honoring the best achievements in casting. Today came the contenders in the television, theater, commercial, short film, and short form series categories. The winners will be presented at galas at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, the Edison Ballroom in New York and White City House in London on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. Netflix leads the way with 17 nominations, more than double the next most nominated platform, HBO/Max with six. Among the Netflix contenders whose casting directors broke through are Emmy winner for casting “Baby Reindeer,” as well as “Ripley,” “Scoop,” “The Crown,” “3 Body Problem,” “Squid Game: The Challenge,” and more.

“The Bear” is an Emmy beast. The FX series just broke its own record for the most Primetime Emmys won by a comedy series in a single year, scoring 11 trophies during the 76th Emmys. That’s an improvement over last year’s 10 Emmys, which was the previous record for a laffer.

Big wins on Sunday night included lead comedy actor, supporting comedy actor, supporting comedy actress and directing (Christopher Storer for “Fishes” or Ramy Youssef for “Honeydew”).

Heading into the Primetime Emmys on Sunday, “The Bear” Season 2 had already won seven Creative Arts Emmys last weekend. Wins included Jamie Lee Curtis (as Donna Berzatto) and Jon Bernthal (as Michael Berzatto), who won guest comedy actress and guest comedy actor, respectively, for the episode “Fishes”; and outstanding casting for a comedy series.

The second night of the Creative Arts Emmys commenced Sunday night. The FX series Shōgun would prove to be the awards darling of the night by taking home an incredible number of awards for categories that include Guest Actor, Costumes, Makeup, Hairstyling, Stunts, Production Design, Visual Effects and more. The historical drama snagged a total of 14 Emmys over the course of both nights and leads in wins.

Another popular FX series, The Bear, would have its own run of wins as the intense cooking show took home statues for casting, picture editing, sound mixing and guest stars Jon Bernthal, as well as Jamie Lee Curtis, who also served as the opening emcee for the ceremony, which was held at the Peacock Theater. The Bear has not been able to catch up to Shōgun, but the show has, so far, collected seven wins, which is just one more than the leader for Night 1, Saturday Night Live.

Shōgun continued its historic gold rush on night 2 of the Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday, with multiple wins for Guest Actor, Costumes, Makeup, Hairstyling, Stunts, Production Design, Visual Effects and more.

The Casting Society of America announced the winners of the 39th annual Artios Awards, which honors “excellence in casting across feature film, television, commercials and theatre.”

Winners in the film categories include Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, Past Lives and The Holdovers, while The Bear, Succession, Beef, Reservation Dogs and The Last Of Us were honored in the television categories. Queer Eye, RuPaul’s Drag Race and A Black Lady Sketch Show also received wins.

Niecy Nash-Betts hosted the Los Angeles awards ceremony at the Beverly Hilton on Thursday, while the New York ceremony was hosted by Alex Edelman at the Edison Ballroom. The London ceremony was hosted by Samantha Morton at the White City House.

Ava DuVernay was honored with the Lynn Stalmaster Award for Career Achievement, which was presented by David Oyelowo. Sharon Klein, head of casting at Disney Entertainment Television, was honored with the Hoyt Bowers Award for Excellence in Casting.

The ceremony honors top casting in the year’s films, TV and theater. The celebrations were in person for the first time in three years, taking place in Los Angeles and New York City with hosts Niecy Nash-Betts and comedian Alex Edelman dividing up emcee duties between the cities. There was also a ceremony for casting directors in London.

With the newly added Academy Award for casting, the night certainly was a celebration. Starting in 2026, there will be a prize for best achievement in casting, the culmination of a campaign for recognition that has taken decades.

The Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Saturday handed out trophies in the Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series, Drama Series and Limited or Anthology Series categories. They went to FX’s The Bear, HBO’s The White Lotus and Netflix’s Beef (Charlene Lee and Claire Koonce), respectively

Last year, two of the winners in the casting categories, Succession for drama series and The White Lotus, which competed as a limited series in Season 1, went on to triumph a week later as Outstanding Drama Series and Limited Series winners, respectively. The Casting for a Comedy Series Emmy was won by ABC’s Abbott Elementary while Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso repeated as Comedy Series Emmy winner. The year before, the winners in the three casting categories all went on to triumph in the marquee scripted categories.

The Best Comedy Series Casting Emmy category is one where repeat wins should generally not be expected, since the only show to achieve that feat in well over a decade was “Veep” in 2016 and 2017. Most of Gold Derby’s participating users seem to have kept this in mind while making their 2023 Emmy picks, given that former casting winners “Ted Lasso” (2021) and “Abbott Elementary” (2022) are trailing new shows “The Bear” and “Jury Duty” in the current race. However, there is still no obvious consensus among them as to which freshman series will actually take the gold.

The final slot in this year’s comedy casting lineup is filled by “Only Murders in the Building,” which, like “Abbott Elementary,” was first recognized here last year.
