Three Identical Strangers: Where Are The Triplets Now?
Image
Content Warning: this article contains discussions of suicide.

The remarkable documentary Three Identical Strangers follows the story of triplets separated at birth only to be reunited by coincidence many years later. However, the tragedy that unfolds in the years after their meeting left a lot of questions about what happened to the brothers. Directed by Tim Wardle, the 2018 documentary spotlights identical triplets Edward Galland, David Kellman, and Robert Shafran using archival footage, interviews, and reenactments. As the movie goes on, its revealed that a sociological experiment was involved in their separation.

Three Identical Strangers presents increasingly unbelievable events. The trio became a media sensation, in part due to the great documentary, and their story was made even more incredible by the revelation that it was no accident that they were separated. They were part of a scientific study of nature versus nurture. The brothers were among a handful of sibling...

Triptych: What True Event Is the Netflix Series Based On?
Image
What would you do if you found your doppelganger in the wild? That’s the question that opens the Netflix thriller series Triptych. When forensics agent Becca Fuentes arrives at a crime scene to find the dead perpetrator, Aleida Trujano shares her birthday and face, she’s sent down a twisty path toward the truth. Along the way, she’s helped by stripper Tamara, who also mysteriously has the same face and birthday as Becca. With the realization that she and the other two women are triplets separated at birth, Becca and Tamara set out to solve the mystery around their lineage and the sinister forces that conspired to tear the family apart.

While the Netflix show takes a turn toward the fantastic, the basic story of Triptych is, as the opening suggests, based on the true story of real scientific experiments conducted in New York in the 1960s and '70s.

Why Triptych Is Worth Watching on Netflix
Image
Who doesn’t love a good mystery? In February 2023, Netflix released a Mexican mystery thriller series, Triptych, about a forensic agent named Rebecca who discovers she is a triplet. She learns this after meeting one of her twins, Aleida, who took her doctor hostage and was shot by the police. Aleida knows Rebecca, but Rebecca knows nothing about her or their other twin sister. Along the way, she uncovers secrets about her family and herself.

While critics have been giving this show mixed reviews, it is popular among Netflix viewers. Back in March, it was the #1 non-English TV series in the world, according to Netflix’s data. It’s easy to see why this show rose in popularity. The acting in this series is great, especially Maite Perroni, who plays three characters throughout. Some characters' actions make you question their intentions. The story behind this show leaves you wanting to know more—warning: spoilers ahead.

Ben Stiller in Talks to Play the Titular Triplets in the "Three Identical Strangers" Series
Image
Way back in 2018, the "Three Identical Strangers" documentary shocked viewers around the world as it told the story of three triplets who were separated at birth. The film chronicled the journey of Robert Shafran, Eddy Galland, and David Kellman as they discovered that they were identical triplets who were placed with different adoptive families as part of a scientific experiment. Now, their story is being turned into a limited TV series under Sony Pictures Television, with Ben Stiller in talks to star as all three brothers.

Reps for Stiller and Sony did not immediately respond to Popsugar's request for comment, but according to Variety, Stiller is set to lead the production company's forthcoming series.

The show would mark a return to acting for Stiller, who's been focused on directing and producing in recent years. He serves in both roles on Apple TV+'s hit sci-fi series "Severance" (which he started...

How Will Ben Stiller Play the ‘Three Identical Strangers’ in Series Based on Acclaimed Doc?
Image
In a casting that raises several questions, Ben Stiller is in final talks to star in “Three Identical Strangers,” a limited series adaptation of the acclaimed documentary film, according to Variety.

The 2018 film, which was directed by Tim Wardle and won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Storytelling at the Sundance Film Festival, tells the story of Bobby Shafran, David Kellman, and Eddy Galland — three identical triplets who meet by chance as adults, and the revelation of the undisclosed scientific experiment that separated them by birth. Upon its release, “Three Identical Strangers” received positive reviews, and made the shortlist for the Oscars’ Best Documentary Feature category.

Stiller will play all three of the brothers as adults. What makes his casting unusual is that Galland died by suicide in 1995, when he was 34. Stiller is currently 57, nearly 25 years older than Galland was at time of death. In addition, the meat...

‘Three Identical Strangers’ Hanukkah Q&A: Robert Shafran and director Tim Wardle discuss the joyous but tragic doc [Watch]
Robert Shafran
“What the three of us had for literally a decade … was an unbelievable amount of joy and happiness,” said Robert Shafran, one of the subjects of the documentary “Three Identical Strangers,” “but there was also tragedy and there was also this whole sinister thing behind it.” He joined director Tim Wardle for a special Hanukkah dinner and Q&A at Sammy’s Roumanian Steakhouse in New York City to discuss the heartwarming, but also unsettling true story behind their film. Watch them above.

Shafran lived almost 20 years before discovering that he had a twin brother, Eddy Galland. And shortly after they were reunited they discovered a third identical brother, David Kellman. Their remarkable reunion made them media sensations during the 1980s, but an uncomfortable question lingered for each of their families: why were the three siblings secretly separated from each other as infants and placed with different adoptive families? ‘Three Identical Strangers’ Tackles Fame And The Dark Side of Humanity – The Contenders NY
Natalie Portman in Vox Lux (2018)
There may not be an obvious connection between musical drama Vox Lux from writer-director Brady Corbet and documentary Three Identical Strangers by Tim Wardle. But the two share one similar quality — they defy their genre. Both titles, released by New York-based distributor, Neon, were spotlighted back-to-back this evening at Contenders.

“My previous film was about the events leading up to the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, and after that, I decided to return to America, where I’m from, and make a film about the events that define the 21st century,” said Corbet, who shared the stage with cast member Raffey Cassidy, who plays the young version of Celeste, the central character in Vox Lux.

Through the prism of a fictional rising pop star, played by Natalie Portman as the adult Celeste, Vox Lux turns the mirror on America’s real-life obsession with fame and its gnawing acceptance of gun violence.

‘Three Identical Strangers’: More Twins Separated at Birth Have Found Each Other Since Seeing the Film
“Three Identical Strangers” may be the most surprising documentary since “Tickled,” beginning as a stranger-than-fiction comedy before revealing itself as something much darker. Tim Wardle’s account of triplets reuniting 20 years after being separated at birth — and, until a chance encounter between two brothers made headlines, never knowing their siblings even existed — has won acclaim since its Sundance premiere earlier this year. But in many ways, the story hasn’t ended.

Wardle recently presented his film as part of the Ida Screening Series in Los Angeles, explaining how the Jewish Board, which played a key role in the decades-long events of the film, remains cagey to this day. “When the brothers [Robert Shafran, Edward Galland, and David Kellman] tried to interact with them, they would only deal with the brothers via a medical-malpractice attorney — so you can kind of draw your own conclusions from that,” he said. “They did write a letter of apology,...

Raw, Film4 and Ske will develop the new narrative feature following what they describe as “fierce, multi-studio competitive bidding in the life rights of Robert Shafran and David Kellman,” who are two of the identical triplets at the heart of the documentary.

The critically acclaimed documentary “Three Identical Strangers,” which made a splash at Sundance, is to be adapted into a feature film. David Kellman, Robert Shafran, and Eddy Galland in Three Identical Strangers (2018)
The True Story Behind This New Documentary Is Mind-Boggling
David Kellman, Robert Shafran, and Eddy Galland in Three Identical Strangers (2018)
The new documentary Three Identical Strangers tells the story of triplets separated at birth. A reunion of three identical brothers who had no idea the others existed would be powerful stuff all on its own, but there's way more to the story. According to USA Today, director Tim Wardle wants audiences to watch his documentary with as little knowledge about the Stranger Things-esque circumstances surrounding the triplets' separation as possible, but some parts of this story are just too fascinating not to share.

According to Wardle's interview with USA Today, the story began when Robert Shafran attended his first day of community college in 1980. Shafran couldn't go anywhere on campus without someone calling him Eddy. Ultimately, Shafran contacted Eddy Galland, and together the brothers realized they were both adopted and shared the same birthday. Neither set of their adoptive parents had any idea that the baby they had adopted also had a twin.

'Three Identical Strangers' Review: Reunited-Triplets Doc Takes Dark Left Turn
Robert Shafran
In 1980, Robert Shafran drove from Westchester County to the Catskills. It was his first day of college – a community college, he modestly notes, but still, he was going. As he walked through the campus, the 19-year-old noticed how friendly everyone was ... excessively so, in some cases. Then people started calling him "Eddy" and welcoming him back, despite the fact he'd never attended a day of classes here before. Another student tells Robert that he's a dead ringer for his friend, Eddy Galland. Soon, they're driving to Long Island to meet him.

‘Three Identical Strangers’ Film Review: Doc Follows Separated Triplets Down Tragic Life Paths
Robert Shafran
In 1980, a 19-year-old man named Robert Shafran walked on campus for his first day of college. To his bewilderment, the kids greeted him as if they knew him already and were surprised that he was back. It didn’t take long for Robert to figure out that he had an identical twin brother named Eddy about whom he knew nothing. After they met, and it was reported in the press, yet another identical twin brother named David contacted Robert and Eddy.

Director Tim Wardle’s carefully structured and suspenseful documentary “Three Identical Strangers” starts at this point where all the brothers first met, and it mimics the “can you believe it?” tone of their initial press. Robert, Eddy, and David made the rounds of all the talk shows in 1980 and became media celebrities. They also all moved into the same apartment in Manhattan, and they enjoyed some wild times.

‘Three Identical Strangers’ Trailer: Triplets Mysteriously Separated At Birth Seek Answers In New Doc
Truth is, most definitely, stranger than fiction. Such is the case in the upcoming documentary “Three Identical Strangers.”

Imagine if you met a long-lost twin you never knew you had. Now, imagine if the two of you then met a long-lost triplet. The odds of this happening are staggeringly low, yet it happened for David Kellman, Robert Shafran, and Eddy Galland.

‘Three Identical Strangers’ Review: Triplets Separated at Birth is a Charming Story Until It Turns Into a Dark Conspiracy — Sundance 2018
Robert Shafran
The backstory of “Three Identical Strangers” is such obvious movie fodder it’s a wonder it took so long for someone to make a movie about it: In 1980, 19-year-olds Robert Shafran and Edward Galland found each other at the same community college and realized they were twins separated at birth; the ensuing press coverage led them to hear from another 19-year-old, David Kellman, who looked exactly like them. The surprise triplets became fast friends and overnight media sensations. But how did they get pulled apart in the first place?

'Three Identical Strangers': Film Review | Sundance 2018
Almost invariably, the most important element of a good documentary is fascinating subject matter, and Tim Wardle unquestionably zeroed in on that with Three Identical Strangers. Chronicling the startling history of Robert Shafran, Edward Galland and David Kellman, triplets separated at birth who grew up oblivious to one another's existence, the film starts out like a jaunty sitcom, featuring three likable lugs with toothy grins who might have stepped off the set of Welcome Back, Kotter. They look like they were cloned from Andy Samberg. But as the euphoria of reconnection subsides and disconcerting questions begin to arise, a mystery...
