Another Day, Another Law & Order Cast Change…Why Should We Invest?
Image
We all know that the Dick Wolf Universe has made several casting changes lately, but it seems like Law & Order gets affected every season.

Since the series returned in 2022, it has undergone numerous cast changes, making it challenging for viewers to invest in the series or the characters.

On Friday, NBC announced that Mehcad Brooks would not be returning to Law & Order as Det. Jalen Shaw.

(Virginia Sherwood/NBC)

Brooks portrayed Det. Shaw, since Law & Order Season 22, after Anthony Anderson left.

He was a breath of fresh air on the series since he tried to show compassion.

Major Law & Order Star Makes A Shocking Exit After 3 Seasons
Image
Mehcad Brooks will not be returning to Law & Order for its 25th season. Brooks played Detective Jalen Shaw for three seasons, replacing Anthony Anderson in 2022. The actor, who was previously seen on ABC's Desperate Housewives and who will reprise his role as Jax in the upcoming Mortal Kombat II, was a favorite among Law & Order fans.

Brooks' exit was reported by Deadline. His decision to leave the show was reportedly mutual and due to a desire to explore other acting opportunities. Brooks' exit from the franchise marks the third departure of a detective character since the show's revival in 2022, following both Anderson and Jeffrey Donovan.

‘Law & Order’ Shocker: Mehcad Brooks Exiting Ahead of Season 25
Image
Law & Order is once again losing a detective. Mehcad Brooks, who has played Detective Jalen Shaw since Season 22, having been introduced in the premiere, will not be returning, Deadline reports. The finale in the spring didn’t even hint at his exit, so the Season 25 premiere will have to explain what happened, likely in a conversation between his now former partner, Vincent Riley (Reid Scott), and the new detective or Lieutenant Jessica Brady (Maura Tierney). The outlet reports that everyone else will be returning for Law & Order Season 25: Maura Tierney as Lieutenant Jessica Brady, Reid Scott as Detective Vincent Riley, Hugh Dancy as A.D.A. Nolan Price, Odelya Halevi as A.D.A. Samantha Maroun, and Tony Goldwyn as District Attorney Nicholas Baxter. Goldwin and Scott’s contracts had previously only taken them through Season 24. Mehcad Brooks Exits ‘Law & Order’ After 3 Seasons
Image
Mehcad Brooks has solved his last case on “Law & Order” after three seasons, TheWrap has learned.

The actor, who joined the cast as a series regular in Season 22 as Detective Jalen Shaw, has left the series ahead of Season 25. The decision was mutual from both Brooks and the show’s creative team, as the actor pursues other opportunities.

It’s unclear if Brooks’ character will receive a farewell on the show or if his exit will be explained off-camera. Casting is underway for a new detective to join the cast in his absence.

The rest of the “Law & Order” team is set to return for the milestone season. That includes Tony Goldwyn and Reid Scott, whose contracts were also up for renewal this year. The rest of the ensemble includes Maura Tierney, Hugh Dancy and Odelya Halevi.

Mehcad Brooks Leaving ‘Law & Order’ After 3 Seasons
Image
Exclusive: Mehcad Brooks is departing NBC’s Law & Order after three seasons as Detective Jalen Shaw ahead of the venerable crime drama’s upcoming 25th season, Deadline has learned. According to sources, the parting of the ways was mutual, with Brooks already exploring other opportunities.

The rest of the Law & Order main cast, including Tony Goldwyn and Reid Scott, whose contracts were up at the end of last season, Hugh Dancy, Odelya Halevi and Maura Tierney, are set to come back, sources said. As Deadline reported in May, most actors on NBC’s Law & Order and Chicago franchises will be in fewer episodes next season as part of a cost-savings measure.

Brooks stepped in as a detective on Law & Order in 2022, filling the void left by the departure of Anthony Anderson. Casting of a new detective has just gotten underway.

Image
Law & Order has reached its landmark Season 25 after the most recent round of renewals from NBC. When the series was revived, it was also renewed for three seasons, bringing us to its landmark 25th season.

Two original cast members returned: Sam Waterston as District Attorney Jack McCoy and Anthony Anderson as Detective Kevin Bernard, along with a slew of new characters. An ESPN Star Is ’Law and Order’s Next Victim
Image
An ESPN star is coming to this week's episode of Law & Order, but he's not going to make it past the opening credits. First Take commentator Stephen A. Smith will play the victim du jour in "Tough Love," a new episode of the procedural flagship that will air on May 8. Variety reports that Smith will fulfill a longtime dream by appearing on the NBC series, which will conclude its 24th season later this month.

Smith will star as a hard-charging sports agent who's found stabbed to death in "Tough Love": with plenty of suspects and a mountain of evidence but no clear motive, prosecutors Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy) and Samantha Maroun (Odelya Halevi) are stumped. It was a dream come true for the opinionated Smith, who was recruited by the episode's writer: "One of the writers, her name was Pam Wechsler, I ran across her in Los Angeles.

Law & Order boss reveals why upcoming crossover event will be most cinematic yet
Image
Law & Order laid the groundwork for the Dick Wolf television world we all live in today. The franchise has been around since 1990, and incredibly, has managed to keep pace with the various Wolf shows that have followed in its wake. Part of the reason why is the franchise's ability to stage memorable and impressive crossover events.

Law & Order has made a point of setting up at least one crossover a season for the past few years, and 2025 is no exception in this regard. Law & Order and Law & Order: Svu will be joining forces for a two part event on Thursday, April 17 (Law & Order: Organized Crime will close out the block but not be connected in terms of story). It's a tried and true formula, but this crossover is going to be different from all the rest, according to franchise showrunner Rick Eid.

Quick LinksLaw & Order Fictionalizes One of America's Most Polarizing MurdersLaw & Order Season 24, Episode 16 Falls Into Dramatic TrapsIs Law & Order Getting Ready to Say Goodbye to Jalen Shaw?

The following contains major spoilers from Law & Order Season 24, Episode 16, "Folk Hero," which debuted Thursday, March 20 on NBC.

Law & Order Season 24, Episode 16, "Folk Hero" is the NBC show's clear fictionalization of the Luigi Mangione case. This is the NBC drama's "ripped from the headlines" approach in full force; though it's obviously not a direct adaptation of Mangione's murder of Brian Thompson, fans will catch on within minutes. Viewers may have differing opinions on the writers' choice to so plainly take inspiration from Mangione's story, but that's not the only issue with this episode.

"Folk Hero" begins with the murder of Logan Andrews, CEO of the fictional health insurance company OptiShield, in broad daylight. Part of the plot is devoted to the...

‘Law & Order’s Latest Case Just Set Up an Even Bigger Conflict Between Price and Shaw
Image
Season 24 of Law & Orderhas truly excelled by focusing on cases that intertwine with the personal lives of its characters, allowing the audience to connect with them on a deeper level beyond just solving their cases. Since its return, the series has made a deliberate effort to explore each character's backstory and highlight how their pasts influence the cases they take on. While the detectives and prosecutors generally work well together, their individual histories sometimes lead to moments of tension and dramatic conflict. This dynamic is especially evident in the latest episode, “A Price to Pay,” which centers on a compelling clash between Detective Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) and Ada Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy). The emotional stakes of the case, coupled with their personal histories, create an intense and unforgettable confrontation that adds a new layer of depth to both characters.

Law & Order Season 24, Episode 14 Review: Does Shaw Go Too Far?

Quick LinksLaw & Order Season 24, Episode 14 Repeats a Familiar PremiseLaw & Order Sends a Controversial Message With Its Ending

The following contains major spoilers from Law & Order Season 24, Episode 14, "The Price We Pay," which debuted Thursday, Feb. 27 on NBC.

Law & Order Season 24, Episode 14, "A Price to Pay" will invite discussion, but not necessarily in a positive way. This episode of the NBC show isn't quite as polarizing as some others have been in Season 24, but it still has challenges, both in terms of the story it tells and in what it does with the character of Jalen Shaw. Shaw has been put in tough positions before, but this one is the worst -- and it's one entirely of his own making.

"A Price to Pay" seems like a standard drug-related story: an Oscar-nominated actor is murdered by the woman supplying him with ketamine. But another one of Diane Oliver's...

Law & Order fall finale spoilers: Is Jessica Brady leaving the show?

Law and Order was messier then fans expected during its fall finale. There's typically a twist as to who the real culprit of a given case is, but "Bad Apple" looked inward, and looked at narcotics officers who decided to take the law into their own hands. To make things even more complicated, Law and Order stalwart Jessica Brady (Maura Tierney) used to run with their unit.

The whole investigation came about after a cop was shot and killed in the line of duty. It was then determined another cop, one who has a history of corrupt behavior, was responsible, and peers have known about his behavior for years. Yes, unfortunately, Brady was one of these peers.

Law & Order Season 24, Episode 7 Review: More Political Than Crime Drama
Image
The following contains major spoilers from Law & Order Season 24, Episode 7, "Truth and Consequences," which debuted Thursday, Nov. 14 on NBC.

Law & Order Season 24, Episode 7, "Truth and Consequences" is almost more of a political drama than a crime drama. Yes, a crime is committed and the episode follows its investigation from beginning to end. But the story is dominated by different forms of politics: world politics, city politics and even office politics. That may turn off some viewers who just want a straightforward mystery -- but there's still a plot underneath all the extras.

"Truth and Consequences" surrounds the murder of a college professor, whose wife is a New York Supreme Court judge with a very clear opinion on the conflict between Israel and Palestine. And while that plays a role in his murder, that's only the start of the political arguments that are thrown into the mix. A messy...

‘Law & Order’ Star Mehcad Brooks Breaks Down Shaw’s Crisis of Conscience Over Teen Suspect

Note: This story contains spoilers from “Law & Order” Season 24, Episode 5.

In this week’s “Law & Order” episode, Mehcad Brooks’ character Jalen Shaw has to decide whether his sympathy for a young murder suspect is clouding his judgment, and his decision could affect his career and that of his partner Vincent Riley (Reid Scott).

TheWrap spoke to Brooks about why this case is so hard for Shaw and how it brings up a traumatic time in the character’s life that we — and the actor — previously did not know. We learn that the NYPD detective was in foster care, so he is more than usually invested in the case of 13-year-old Anthony Turner (played by Colton Osorio), who is on trial for fatally shooting his teacher.

Law & Order Season 24, Episode 5: Shaw Is Put in a Terrible Position
Image
The following contains major spoilers for Law & Order Season 24, Episode 5, "Report Card," which debuted Thursday, Oct. 31 on NBC.

Law & Order will continue to get audiences talking with Season 24, Episode 5, "Report Card." Just a week after one of the show's more hot-button episodes, this hour has a clear opinion on juvenile justice and some interesting comments about the legal responsibilities of educators, too. While it will stir up almost as much debate as the prior episode, a separate issue is that it has some of the same challenges when it comes to characterization.

"Report Card" centers on the murder of Walter Rhodes, a middle school teacher shot and killed by seventh-grader Anthony Turner. Detective Jalen Shaw takes a special interest in Anthony's case and strongly advocates for him -- only to predictably be blindsided. Meanwhile, Nicholas Baxter has his attorneys take a risk by holding Anthony's principal responsible for the crime.

Mehcad Brooks Says His Role on ‘And Just Like That’ Season 3 Feels Like ‘When Harry Met Sally’
Image
Mehcad Brooks will play an “award-winning editor” who falls for Nicole Ari Parker’s character on “And Just Like That,” the “Law & Order” star recently told TheWrap.

“It’s like ‘When Harry Met Sally?,’ a very quintessential, New York romcom,” he said, referencing Rob Reiner’s romantic 1989 classic. “I love this kind of thing. There’s a lot of really funny interactions and boundary crossing with designer clothes on.”

Brooks, who plays Detective Jalen Shaw on “Law & Order,” explained that even though Parker’s character, the memorably named Lisa Todd Wexley, and his are already married to other people, they find an “undeniable attraction” that leads to “an acrobatic sort of dance” as they get closer.

Law & Order Season 24, Episode 3: Ryan Eggold Breaks the Show's Worst Habit
Image
The following contains major spoilers for Law & Order Season 24, Episode 3, "Big Brother," which debuted Thursday, Oct. 17 on NBC.

Law & Order has broken its worst habit -- and it just needed to hire the star of another NBC show to do it. Ryan Eggold, who led the network's medical drama New Amsterdam for five seasons, almost runs away with Law & Order Season 24, Episode 3, "Big Brother." He's cast in the role of Detective Vincent Riley's wayward sibling Matt, and while the character is fairly stereotypical, what Eggold and scene partner Reid Scott do with it is far from playing by numbers.

"Big Brother" centers around the murder of Hudson University men's basketball coach Nick Walsh. Riley and partner Jalen Shaw think Walsh was killed by angry boosters who didn't want him to leave for the University of Kentucky, but the truth involves money in a totally different way.

‘Law & Order’: Mehcad Brooks Teases Shaw’s Resentment in Ryan Eggold Episode
Image
This week’s Law & Order isn’t going to be easy for Detective Vincent Riley (Reid Scott), and while his partner, Detective Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks), can understand the position he’s in, that doesn’t mean he’s just going to let things slide. In “Big Brother,” airing on October 17, Riley’s personal and professional lives clash when his brother (New Amsterdam‘s Ryan Eggold) is connected to a murder investigation. Ada Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy) takes a chance on a witness who can testify to a hidden motive. “Ryan Eggold is amazing. He’s fantastic in his performance and you really can’t take your eyes off of him,” Brooks tells TV Insider. When it comes to the character of Matt Riley, Shaw has “a lot of compassion for Vincent,” Brooks continues. “And there’s some resentment because Vincent’s brother, his screw-up of a brother, is getting...

How Did ‘Law & Order’ Write Out Camryn Manheim’s Dixon & Introduce Maura Tierney’s Brady?
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Law & Order Season 24 premiere “Catch and Kill.”] Since last spring, fans have wondered how Lieutenant Kate Dixon would be written out of Law & Order with Camryn Manheim‘s exit. The Season 23 finale didn’t even hint at a possible way. The Season 24 premiere finds Detectives Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) and Vincent Riley (Reid Scott) wanting that answer as well after being surprised when a new lieutenant, Jessica Brady (Maura Tierney) shows up at a crime scene. When Shaw asks her what happened to Dixon, she doesn’t know and turns the focus to the case. Riley tells her she needs to give them more than that, but, “No, because I don’t know,” she says and again turns to the case. And while the detectives may have the crime scene covered, since she’s already there, she’s not leaving. Brady continues to remain hands-on throughout the investigation, wanting...

Law & Order Season 24 New Cast & Returning Character Guide
Image
Law & Order season 26 features a small but significant cast of characters who drive the action in every episode. For almost a quarter of a century, this series has focused on the police and court aspects of the justice system. It is most closely associated with Sam Waterston, who is, unfortunately, one of the Law & Order cast members who is not returning for season 26. However, most of the cast in this series is returning, and one new cast member is being added..

Law & Order has always focused more on police procedural aspects than on character-driven stories; thus, the police and cops in the show are easier to replace when an actor leaves. It has had its share of cast turnover, most notably when Chris Noth left Law & Order over a contract dispute. In recent years, it has shifted to telling more personal stories than it has in the past,...

Tony Goldwyn, Maura Tierney, Hugh Dancy, Reid Scott, Mehcad Brooks, and Odelya Halevi in Law & Order (1990)
Law & Order Season 24 Cast and Character Guide
Tony Goldwyn, Maura Tierney, Hugh Dancy, Reid Scott, Mehcad Brooks, and Odelya Halevi in Law & Order (1990)
Law & Order very nearly became the longest-running crime drama on television. If it hadn't been for a 10-year hiatus, it would have reached its 24th season a long time ago.

Thanks to that break, sister show Law & Order: Svu has pulled ahead by two seasons.

Still, Law & Order is one of NBC's most iconic shows, from its "dun dun" chime between scenes to its filming on location in New York City. It's high time for a cast and character guide to help you keep track of who you can expect to see (and not see!) during Law & Order Season 24.

Two Characters Are Not Coming Back

Many viewers were shocked when Jack McCoy (Sam Waterson) left Law & Order after over 400 episodes.

Waterson had been with the series since Season 4 and was probably more closely identified with it than any other character.

Main cast member Camryn Manheim is exiting Law & Order ahead of season 24. Manheim's last episode as Lieutenant Kate Dixon will air on May 16, which is the season 23 finale. No details were given about Manheim's exit, but the franchise has always experienced a high turnover in the cast.

The revived Law & Order is losing another main cast member ahead of season 24. The long-running NBC series was revived in September 2022 and brought back in the form of Law & Order season 21, with Jeffrey Donovan, Camryn Manheim, Hugh Dancy, and Odelya Halevi joining the cast alongside Anthony Anderson and Sam Waterson reprising their roles. But since then, there have been several high-profile changes to Law & Order's cast ensemble.
