Per Deadline, it has been revealed that Mehcad Brooks is leaving Law & Order. Brooks has been playing the role of Detective Jalen Shaw for three seasons, serving as one of its new stars since the original Law & Order series was revived. The reason for the split is reportedly mutual, and Brooks is already looking into other acting opportunities.

The news comes shortly after the trailer launch for Mortal Kombat II, which will see Brooks back on the big screen. Brooks previously appeared as Jax, a character from the video games, in the previous Mortal Kombat film released in 2021. The actor can also be seen in the third season of And Just Like That... on HBO Max as well.

Smith will play the victim du jour in "Tough Love," a new episode of the procedural flagship that will air on May 8. Law & Order laid the groundwork for the Dick Wolf television world we all live in today. The franchise has been around since 1990, and incredibly, has managed to keep pace with the various Wolf shows that have followed in its wake. Part of the reason why is the franchise's ability to stage memorable and impressive crossover events.

Law & Order has made a point of setting up at least one crossover a season for the past few years, and 2025 is no exception in this regard. Law & Order and Law & Order: Svu will be joining forces for a two part event on Thursday, April 17 (Law & Order: Organized Crime will close out the block but not be connected in terms of story). It's a tried and true formula, but this crossover is going to be different from all the rest, according to franchise showrunner Rick Eid.

Mehcad Brooks will play an “award-winning editor” who falls for Nicole Ari Parker’s character on “And Just Like That,” the “Law & Order” star recently told TheWrap.

“It’s like ‘When Harry Met Sally?,’ a very quintessential, New York romcom,” he said, referencing Rob Reiner’s romantic 1989 classic. “I love this kind of thing. There’s a lot of really funny interactions and boundary crossing with designer clothes on.”

Brooks, who plays Detective Jalen Shaw on “Law & Order,” explained that even though Parker’s character, the memorably named Lisa Todd Wexley, and his are already married to other people, they find an “undeniable attraction” that leads to “an acrobatic sort of dance” as they get closer.

The actors filmed scenes for the upcoming 24th season of the long-running NBC police drama on Friday (Sept. 20) in New York City.

For their time on set, Mehcad and Reid, who play Senior Detective Jalen Shaw and Junior Detective Vincent Riley, respectively, on the show, were seen arresting and questioning a perp in a park.
