Bhog Director Parambrata Chatterjee On Why He Gravitates Towards The Supernatural
Image
Parambrata Chatterjee, director of the thriller web series Bhog, spoke to Subhash K Jha about the hit series and why he gravitates towards the supernatural horror space in his projects.

Your web series Bhog is one of the eeriest things I’ve seen. What brought you to this subject?

I’ve always been interested in the supernatural ever since I was a teenager. But somewhere, somehow, this interest was sort of lying dormant until about three or four years ago, when I suddenly realized that there’s a tremendous amount of curiosity and interest amongst consumers, among the watchers, among the viewers, among the readers about supernatural literature; and a lot of that is being converted into audio stories.

So it started with an interest in audio stories?

Yes, I got quite fascinated with the idea of audio stories based on such supernatural literature. And I also realized how much...

“Bhog, A Fear Feast Of Unimaginable Ramifications” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Not a fan of the horror genre, I was taken aback by how shaken I was with the business on hand in Bhog (in Bengali on Hoichoi) largely for its central performance. Actor Anirban Bhattacharya’s jolting performance as a working-class bloke who transforms into a possessed entity, right in front of our disbelieving eyes, echoes Jack Nicholson in The Shining.

There is an unsettling normalcy to Atin’s behaviour, his environment and his near ones at the start. Admittedly, Atin lost his mother when he was young. But he was more than compensated for by a mother-figure Pushpa (Sudipa Basu), whom Atil treats with a mixture of reverence and mischief.

How is he, or we, to know that Pushpa would disappear into thin air, literally with no forwarding address?

There is a chilling finality to the eerie happenings in this sturdily ominous fear feast, based on a short story by Avik Sarkar.

Eastern India’s dominant entertainment conglomerate Svf and its streaming platform Hoichoi have unveiled an expansive content lineup featuring over 25 new titles spanning series, theatrical releases, and innovative formats. The announcement came during “Golper Parbon 1432,” a showcase event celebrating Svf’s 30-year journey in Bengali-language entertainment.

Leading the theatrical slate are two major star vehicles: Prosenjit Chatterjee’s adventure thriller “Vijaynagar’er Hirey” and Dev’s period fantasy “Raghu Dakat.” In “Vijaynagar’er Hirey,” directed by Chandrasish Ray, Chatterjee reprises his iconic role as the intrepid adventurer Kakababu, who embarks on a perilous quest for a mythical treasure. Bengali Film Industry Resumes Production After Week-Long Boycott
Image
Shoots have resumed in the Bengali-language film industry, after boycotts were called over a filming dispute.

Filming resumed today after an intervention from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Last week, technicians boycotted a production on which director Rahool Mukherjee was serving as creative producer. On July 23, the Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India (Fctwei) had banned Mukherjee from making films for three months for violating rules for shooting overseas in Bangladesh. The ban was later lifted by the local directors’ guild on July 27, but the technician boycott continued.

The production was set to feature actors Prosenjit Chatterjee and Anirban Bhattacharya.

In a bid to show solidarity with Mukherjee, members from the Directors Association of Eastern India announced that they would cease work from July 29, bringing the Bengali film industry to a halt. Top filmmakers like Aparna Sen, Kaushik Ganguly, and Srijit Mukherjee signed a statement supporting...

Rani Mukerji reveals she had a miscarriage in 2020 but refrained from talking about it
Image
Mumbai, Aug 10 (Ians) Actress Rani Mukerji, who was earlier seen in the film ‘Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway’ in March 2023, has revealed that she went through a personal tragedy in 2020 when she had a miscarriage five months into her second pregnancy during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The actress made the revelation at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, the inauguration of which was held recently.

She also said that she chose to refrain from talking about the tragedy during the release of ‘Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway’ as it would have been seen as a promotional strategy.

‘Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway’, which is written and directed by Ashima Chibber, is a legal drama which also stars Anirban Bhattacharya, Neena Gupta and Jim Sarbh. The film is inspired by the real-life story of an Indian couple whose children were taken away by Norwegian authorities in 2011.

Mrs. Chatterjee Vs. Norway: Who Are The Real Couple Behind The Movie?
Image
The true story depicted in Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway raises questions about the identity of the real-life couple the movie is based on. Especially when it comes to biographical movies, it can be difficult to tell what has been dramatized for the sake of a cohesive narrative and what actually occurred. This is all the more true when it comes to such an emotionally evocative story as that of the title character, which reflects real-life class issues where the word of immigrants is less valued than those of natural-born citizens.

Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway centers on an Indian immigrant, Debika Chatterjee (Rani Mukerji), who moves to Norway with her husband, Aniruddha Chatterjee (Anirban Bhattacharya), where they have two children, a son and a daughter. However, several weeks after Mrs. Chatterjee enrolls her son in kindergarten, Norwegian child protective services suddenly remove the children from the home, claiming that the kids...

Aniruddha Chatterjee And Daniel Cupik In ‘Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway,’ Explained
Image
An interesting comparison can be drawn between two important male characters in the film Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway. It is their principles that separate them at the end of the film, making Aniruddha an antagonist and Daniel Cupik an empath. Let’s try to understand these two characters individually first before comparing them to each other. The film follows an Indian Bengali family that loses their kids to the child services system in Norway and the mother’s sole fight to win them back. Of course, Rani Mukherjee is the highlight of the film, followed by her last advocate, who eventually helps her get custody of her kids in India. There is a special place for the male lead of the film, Mr. Aniruddha Chatterjee. Played by Anirban Bhattacharya, he has this special place because every time he speaks, you feel an ick and want to smack a punching bag.

Rani Mukerji talks paying homage to motherhood with 'Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway'
Image
Actress Rani Mukerji spoke candidly about why the film ‘Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway’ speaks to her.

Rani in an exclusive BTS clip shared with IMDb, said: “The film resonates with one emotion which is the mother’s emotion. This movie is a reminder to all children in the world that there’s no greater emotion or relationship than with a mother. As a mother, I couldn’t place myself in Sagarika’s shoes because it is a painful thought to be separated from your child.

She added: “I can’t even imagine it. Animals too have a natural instinct with their children that if someone tries to take their children away, the mother will straightaway attack. It is the same with human mothers as well. If you try to do something with their child, they will not spare you.

“You forget to say thank you to your mothers and take them for granted.

Movie Review | Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway: A slack legal drama
Image
Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway is a family legal drama film directed by Ashima Chibber. The film is the true story of an Indian couple, an adaptation based on Sagarika Chakraborty’s autobiography titled ‘The Journey of a Mother’; whose children were taken away from them by the Norwegian Childcare system (Barnevernet) in 2011.

Adaptation

The story is based on real life case with Sagarika Bhattacharya who was living with her husband Anup Bhattacharya with two children. They moved to Norway for a job. In 2011, their children were taken away by Barnevernet (also known as Norwegian Child Welfare Services) on ground of improper treatment of children. First, they appealed in a Norwegian court but failed. Later they appealed Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India to intervene. Before this Sagarika got separated from her husband and custody of the children were given to their father’s brother. In 2013, after she fought a two year long legal battle,...

“Rani Mukerji Is A Force Of Nature In Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway

Directed by Ashima Chibber

Why wait for the end of the year? Just give all the awards to Rani Mukerji for her sinewy performance as a hyper Bengali mother battling the government of Norway for the right to her own children.

There! I said it. Sounds so ridiculous: a mother being deprived for the right to her own children. But it all happened , and not so long ago when Sagarika Bhattacharya and her husband’s kids were taken away.

This is what happens when eager NRIs don’t read the fine print before migrating. Rani Mukerji, here rechristened Debika Chatterjee, fights tooth and nail to get back her children. Not much support from her stiff-lipped husband (Anirban Bhattacharya) . In the process of battling bureaucracy almost singlehandedly Debika encounters all sorts of conspiracies and schemers.

In fact, the two Norwegian women who barge into her home and...

Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway review – Rani Mukerji goes dowdy in mama-drama ordeal
Anirban Bhattacharya
Adaptation of a nightmare true story about a woman whose children were removed by the Norwegian state gets passionate too late

This epic Hindi-language testament to tenacious maternal love has been neatly timed for release over the UK Mother’s Day weekend, although it’s based on a true story which began over a decade earlier. Sagarika Chakraborty had already been living in Norway for four years when, in 2011, her two young children were taken by the state for no apparent reason. Rani Mukerji stars as this latter-day Mother India, renamed Debika Chatterjee for the film. It’s a dowdy role for the usually glamorous Bollywood star, but then any averagely vivacious human being would stand out against this grey Norway of municipal buildings and expressionless bureaucrats.

Why were Debika’s children taken away? The official list of charges – co-sleeping, hand-feeding, applying kohl – amount, on the face of it, to simple cultural differences,...

Film Review: The Unknown by Srijit Mukherji
Image
Indian nationalist leader Subhas Chandra Bose has been one of the most controversial figures of contemporary Indian history. Both regarding his life (particularly his decision to leave (ousted for others) the Congress in 1939 following differences with Mahatma Gandhi, and join the Nazis and Imperial Japan against the British, but more regarding the events of his death. While the official record places it on August 18, 1945, after his overloaded Japanese plane crashed in Japanese Taiwan, there are two other theories that have drawn many followers, both of which state that Bose actually faked his death. The first suggests that he managed to escape to Russia, where he was captured and tortured to death in the gulags, while the second that he eventually left Russia, became a monk and returned to India under the name of Gumnaani Baba. The government’s stance on the findings of three different committees that dealt with the events,...

Gumnaami movie review: Critics Review, Rating, Cast and Crew
Srijit Mukherji is unarguably the most prolific filmmaker of contemporary Bengali cinema. He switches from intimate human portraits to wide-canvassed bio-pics with the ease and fluency of a pro.

This time it's the controversial nature of Subhas Chandra Bose's life and death that occupies his creative spectrum. Based on the controversial Mukherjee Commission Hearings, the film fuses a fictional Orson Welles-inspired hero who, like Citizen Kane, sets out to uncover the truth about the death of Netaji, with a fund of historical facts that permeate imminently into the narrative.

It is a fascinating character study of an obstinate leader determined to free India from foreign rule, though the film is not fully freed of foreign influences. Ironically, Anirban Bhattacharya as the Netaji-obsessed journalist Chandrachur Dhar gets much more footage than Bose, who is played by the redoubtable Prosenjit Chatterjee as a cheerless (didn't Netaji ever smile?), stoic, mumbling...

Film Review: Vinci Da (2019) by Srijit Mukherji
Srijit Mukherji’s “Vinci Da” deals with two human minds which are oxymoron but create an impact on the system. And sometimes the mind is covered with a mask of flesh and skin and there lies the criminal instinct which has a flow of its own. “Vinci Da” is a never before made psychological thriller in Bengali cinema which has a unique way to portray the conflict between good and evil thoughts and its impact.

“Vinci Da” is screening at London Indian Film Festival

Leonardo Da Vinci was a great painter but with a mind of a scientist. He studied anatomy of human body and attempted to identify the source of emotions and their expressions. “Vinci Da” is a makeup artist who deals with prosthetic makeup. He is knowledgeable and brilliant but does not get enough work or gets rejected for his honesty and intransigence approach. Adi Bose is a...

Anurag Kashyap feels truth is stranger than fiction
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who has made films like "Paanch" and "Raman Raghav 2.0" based on the life of serial killers, feels that truth is stranger than fiction.

Anurag was interacting with the media at the launch of author Anirban Bhattacharya's book titled "The Deadly Dozen: India's Most Notorious Serial Killers" here on Thursday.

Asked what is it about the mind of a serial killer that draws him to make films on them, Anurag said: "It's always inexplicable? I don't understand what makes them the way they are and that's what is very interesting because you can't make sense of it.

"I feel the logic, the intelligence and no kind of reasoning works there. It is just as it is and that is what is scary about them."

What kind of challenges does he face when he fictionalizes something that has already happened?

He said: "I feel we don't need to fictionalize it,...

Short Film Review: Aadhira (2019) by Ilmaz Syed
“All communications are dead.“

With his first short film “Godhulibela” (“Era of Cows”) director Ilmaz Syed has already proven to be an artist committed to the problems of our time. Rather than tackling issues such as war or climate change through the medium of documentary, his approach may be considered more indirect since he seems to prefer the allegorical rather than the more direct view on these subjects. “Godhulibela”, through the use of the rather abstract setting, pointed at the meaning of conflict for our future, painting the picture of a barren landscape in which people have become extinct and the only surviving tyrant looks for his subjects now that his world order has become obsolete.

In his new feature “Aadhira”, Syed again takes a look at the future, albeit one not as distant as the one in “Godhulibela”. War has erupted between India and Pakistan, a conflict which has...
