Fox News Strikes Deal to Put ‘Ruthless’ Podcast on Digital Roster
Image
Ever since its launch in 1996, Fox News has enjoyed a unique history of minting top talk personalities, ranging from Sean Hannity to Megyn Kelly to Greg Gutfeld. Now, the Fox Corp. unit is going to bring an outside entity into its empire.

As part of a licensing agreement, the popular “Ruthless” podcast, led by a trio of G.O.P. insiders and a fourth who likes to call himself “Comfortably Smug,” will align itself with Fox News Media’s suite of podcasts, which include programs led by Dana Perino and Brian Kilmeade. Fox News executives may see more of this activity on the horizon. Porter Berry, a longtime Fox News executive who helped produce “The Five” and Sean Hannity’s primetime show before becoming president of Fox News Digital, will take on additional duties tied to new media and opinion podcasts.

Financial terms were not disclosed. “Ruthless” is seen as...

Ex-cnn Anchor Jim Acosta Tells MSNBC That Trump Is ‘Freaking Out’ Over Epstein Files
Image
Former CNN White House Correspondent Jim Acosta has said that President Donald Trump has “twisted himself into a pretzel” over the ongoing blowback relating to the Epstein files. Appearing on MSNBC’s Velshi on Sunday (July 13), Acosta was asked for his thoughts on the Jeffrey Epstein case and Trump’s reaction to the situation. “You know, I’ve been around Donald Trump. I’ve been up close with him. I think I know when he’s worried, and he is freaking out right now over these Epstein files,” Acosta said. “It raises the question, what is going on with Trump and these Epstein files?” he continued. “You know, Donald Trump, he’s all for releasing the JFK files, the MLK files, all these other files, but not the Epstein files, and it begs the question, what gives?… He’s twisted himself into a pretzel on this.” Last week, the Department of Justice...

Oliver Darcy Aims to Expand ‘Status’ Newsletter With ‘Power Lines’ Podcast
Image
Ever since journalist Oliver Darcy launched the media-industry newsletter “Status” in August of last year, he has relied on a take-no-prisoners demeanor and a bevy of intriguing scoops about the business.

Now he’s ready to see if it will translate to podcasting and video.

“Power Lines,” a new podcast and videocast based on the reporting and analysis of Darcy and his colleague Jon Passantino, will launch July 11, with new episodes debuting early each subsequent Friday. The duo will offer “our reporting, our trademark sharp-edged analysis,” says Darcy in a recent interview. “We are not sparing any egos or anything like that.”

In less than a year, “Status” has become a go-to resource for media-industry aficionados, and Darcy has been first to report on eyebrow-raising incidents ranging from accusations about former New York writer Olivia Nuzzi and her relationship with now-hhs Secretary Robert Kennedy after she wrote a profile of him to,...

He’s Not the Left’s Joe Rogan — But He May Be Even Better
Image
On a recent Wednesday afternoon, content creator, lawyer, and TikTok journalist Aaron Parnas sat with one of his closest friends, Sam Schmir, in Parnas’s living room. Until January, Schmir did digital strategy at the White House, and had texted earlier that it was a “slow news day” — a seemingly impossible thing during the Trump 2.0 administration. Then, he texted: “I think we have something.”

Schmir watches as Parnas films a TikTok about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement getting customer’s information from Expedia and Booking.com. Previously, the private...

Anderson Cooper Taps CAA CEO Bryan Lourd for Representation in Tough Climate for TV Anchors
Image
Anderson Cooper is one of TV’s best-known news anchors, but his new agent isn’t known for a strict specialty in representing talent tied to video journalism.

Cooper has aligned himself with CAA CEO Bryan Lourd, according to four people familiar with the matter, and the selection is being taken as a possible sign that the CNN mainstay may be looking to explore other opportunities as the economics of TV news become more shaky. Cooper has been with CNN since 2001, but over the years hosted a daytime program distributed under the aegis of CNN’s then-parent corporation, Time Warner; guest-hosted the game show “Jeopardy”; and was considered as a potential co-host for Kelly Ripa on Disney’s syndicated morning program “Live.” He also works as a correspondent for CBS News’ “60 Minutes,” which allows him to run the segments he reports for the newsmagazine on CNN.

CAA declined to...

3 Arts Acquires Independent News Talent Agency OManagement, Led by Olivia Metzger
Image
Olivia Metzger, the independent agent who represents Craig Melvin and Kristen Welker, among others, is no longer running solo.

After leaving CAA in 2017 and building her own agency to represent news anchors and producers, Metzger is selling her OManagement to 3 Arts Entertainment, the production house that has been involved in series ranging from “King of the Hill” to “Hacks,” and has built alliances with Mike Judge and Tina Fey, among others.

Metzger, who also represents Steve Kornacki, Harris Faulkner and Ari Melber, will join as a partner and co-head of 3 Arts’ New York office. Her associate Chelsea Sells will join as well.

The partnership “allows us to offer our clients expanded opportunities across a dynamic media landscape, while preserving the close, individualized attention that has always defined both OManagement and 3 Arts,” says Metzger, in a statement. “By combining our deep experience in agenting and talent development with 3 Arts’ strengths in production and media strategy,...

Joy Reid, Ousted from MSNBC, Ready to Court Network’s Fans With New Podcast
Image
One of MSNBC’s best-known personalities is getting into the world of podcasts — even if she’s no longer with MSNBC.

Joy Reid was hosting a Monday-through-Friday program in the early evening for the soon-to-be-spun-off -from-NBCUniversal progressive news outlet as recently as February when she was ousted in a revamp of the network ordered by its new chief, Rebecca Kutler. In the waning minutes of her final broadcast of her program, “The Reid Out,” Reid vowed that viewers would not be hearing her last monologue. “We are not going to stop,” she said.

Now she is ready to go. Starting June 9, Redi will stream “The Joy Reid Show” on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons across YouTube and major podcast distributors. The debut episode will feature comedian Amber Ruffin and former South African ambassador to the U.S. Ebrahim Rasool. The program will be based in Washington, D.C.

Donald Trump Urges Judge Not To Dismiss CBS ‘60 Minutes’ Lawsuit As Paramount And Potus Teams Talk Settlement
Image
Donald Trump’s legal team made its latest filing in his lawsuit against CBS as settlement negotiations continue between network parent Paramount and the president’s team.

Sources said Wednesday that an opening offer to Trump has been made, in the eight figures, but that the discussions are still in the early stages.

Meanwhile, Trump’s team faced a deadline Wednesday to file a response to CBS’ motion to dismiss the lawsuit.

Trump sued the network over the way that 60 Minutes edited an interview with Kamala Harris, part of an election special that was broadcast in October.

In a preview of the segment that aired on Face the Nation on October 6, Harris was shown giving an answer to a question about Israel-Gaza that was different than the one that was featured on the 60 Minutes broadcast the next day.

Trump claimed that the broadcast was deceptive in a way to boost Harris’ electoral chances.

Sean Penn Says Trump Might ‘Try To Destroy The World’ Before Leaving Office
Image
Sean Penn fears the worst regarding President Donald Trump’s legacy on America.

The Mystic River star appeared on The Jim Acosta Show to discuss the current political climate and promote the movie Words of War.

Penn has made his political views and activism no secret. He and his charity Core provided aid to Ukrainian refugees, and he has since continued to maintain close relations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

This is not the first time Penn has criticized Trump. Back in 2021, he slammed the President’s response to Covid-19, comparing it to a “machine gun” against vulnerable communities.

Penn, host Jim Acosta and Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-California) discussed El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele and the deportation of American citizens to the supermax prison in El Salvador.

“Donald Trump, despite his fantasies, is not gonna be in office forever,” Acosta said. “He’s not Vladimir Putin. He’s not gonna stick around for 25 years.

Why Sean Penn Says Donald Trump “Might Try to Destroy the World”
Image
Sean Penn believes there’s a possibility President Donald Trump “might try to destroy the world before he ages out of life.”

While promoting his new film Words of War during a recent appearance on The Jim Acosta Show on Substack, the actor and filmmaker was asked if he thought Trump would attempt to stay in the White House past his term limit, as the president has already teased a 2028 presidential run.

Penn told host Jim Acosta that “we should consider worst-case scenarios” given the current tense political climate, suggesting that Trump “might try to destroy the world before he ages out of life.”

“I do think it’s a reasonable theory that Donald Trump is not unlike the spouse of someone who leaves him, perhaps for another, who then murders their former partner because if they can’t have her, nobody can,” the two-time Oscar winner added. “I think...

Sean Penn Offers Prediction About the Future of Donald Trump's Presidency
Image
Sean Penn, the Hollywood star and two-time Academy Award winner, has always tilted towards a progressive political standpoint and has even shown himself beside controversial left-wing figures. It shouldn't be a secret that he doesn’t see eye to eye with President Donald Trump's views, and at some point, he even compared voting for Trump to "masturbating our way into hell." His latest statement is no different, as the actor has said that Trump "might try to destroy the world before he ages out of life," and that "we should consider worst-case scenarios" if he decides to run for a third term.

Per the report by Variety, Penn appeared on Jim Acosta's podcast to talk about his latest project as producer, Words of War. "We are tasting in our country what the Russians have gone through," the actor said when comparing Russia and the U.S. and how politicians treat the people.

White House Correspondents Dinner Weekend Was the Death Knell for Traditional D.C. Media
Image
On Saturday night, as legacy media journalists crowded into the Washington Hilton for the annual White House Correspondents Dinner, the mood was somber. The White House Correspondents’ Association decided to omit its usual comedic performance this year, reportedly because the Trump administration complained about the scheduled host. The association said that they wanted “to ensure the focus is not on the politics of division,” so journalists sat quietly while awards and speeches were given.

It did not make for an exciting scene. “It was all NPCs,” says Alice Ma, using...

Jim Acosta Signs With WME (Exclusive)
Image
Jim Acosta, a former chief White House correspondent and anchor for CNN, has signed with WME for representation.

CNN Hires Chief Content Officer Amid Digital Rebuild
Image
As it looks to reshape itself for a post-tv future, CNN has rehired a familiar name in a new C-suite role.

Amanda Wills, who departed the cable news brand in 2022 for The Wall Street Journal after a six-year run, has rejoined CNN as chief content officer, the company said on Monday.

The executive will work with the product team as it plans out its content strategy across TV, digital and streaming platforms and will report to Virginia Moseley, the executive editor of editorial. Wills’ start date will be April 14.

At the Journal, Wills held a similar title, chief content officer of video, overseeing the vertical for the News Corp. broadsheet.

While at CNN, Wills also worked on the short-lived foray into a subscription digital product, CNN+, as vp of content programming for the service that was scrapped after less than a month in between a sale of its parent company from AT&T to Discovery.

Substack passes 5 million paid subscribers. Welcome to the new world of journalism.
Image
Newsletter platforms are changing the face of journalism and achieving subscriber milestones along the way. Substack, the home of more than 50,000 moneymaking publications, now has more than five million paying subscribers.

Substack Head of Writer Relations Sophia Efthimiatou announced the milestone in a blog post. Paid subscriptions only account for a fraction of the platform’s total signups. The total number of active subs — including both paid and unpaid transactions — is north of 35 million, according to the About section on Substack’s website.

Efthimiatou noted that Substack cleared five million paid subs just four months after Co-Founder Hamish McKenzie revealed that his platform had eclipsed the four million mark in the same metric. “It is a milestone that can be enjoyed in purely transactional terms: these are real people rewarding the work of writers and creators with real money, allowing them to achieve and maintain their independence,” Efthimiatou wrote. “But...

Substack Surges Past 5M Subscribers, Thanks to Video and Trump (Exclusive)
Image
Substack is seeing explosive subscriber growth this year, with the crazy political environment and a strategic push into audio and video helping it do so.

Substack co-founder Hamish Mckenzie tells The Hollywood Reporter that the platform has passed 5 million paid subscribers. That is up from 4 million just four months ago, and 3 million a year ago.

A year ago, Substack says that half of its top 250 creators used audio and video as part of their regular content. Now that number is 82 percent, underscoring just how much audio and video content have transformed the platform.

“There’s been a large, big start of the year because of the political volatility. So there’s a bunch of people looking to make sense of what’s going on. There’s a bunch of either anti-Trump sentiment or pro-Trump sentiment that is driving people to look for new voices, and a bit of a shake...

Why Jim Acosta Left CNN, What He Said About His Surprising Exit
Image
After nearly two decades at CNN, Jim Acosta is finally doing his last bows and final hurrahs on the network. However, his goodbye speech may be more politically inclined than it appears. The sweet takeaway? “Never bow down to a tyrant.”

Jim Acosta Shares His Most Memorable Era Working At CNN, And It’s Not Covering Donald Trump At the White House

Jim Acosta is leaving CNN after being one of the show’s mainstays for nearly two decades. The anchor’s decision to exit CNN came five days after it was announced that Wolf Blitzer’s ‘The Situation Room’ will be moving up from its current timeline at 6 pm Et time slot to 10 am starting March, thereby replacing Acosta’s CNN ‘Newsroom.’

Prior to the announcement, a CNN spokesperson had revealed that a new slot was being made available for Acosta. If they did find a spot available for his ‘Newsroom,...

White House Says It Will Continue To Punish Associated Press Because It Hasn’t Aligned With Donald Trump’s Renaming Of Gulf Of Mexico
Image
Updated, with AP comment: The White House said that the Associated Press will continue to be barred from access to Donald Trump‘s Oval Office events and other coverage at the complex, punishment for the news organization’s refusal to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America in its Stylebook.

Taylor Budowich, the White House deputy chief of staff and cabinet secretary, also wrote that the AP would be restricted from travel with the president on Air Force One.

Budowich wrote on X that while the AP’s “right to irresponsible and dishonest reporting is protected by the First Amendment, it does not ensure their privilege of unfettered access to limited spaces, like the Oval Office and Air Force One. Going forward, that space will now be opened up to the many thousands of reporters who have been barred from covering these intimate areas of the administration.

CNN Hires Rahm Emanuel
Image
Rahm Emanuel, who last served as ambassador to Japan in Joe Biden’s administration, has found a media gig at CNN.

The veteran politician will join the cable news outlet as senior political and global affairs commentator, the network said on Thursday. Emanuel, who grew his national stature as White House chief of staff to President Obama, served as mayor of Chicago from 2011 to 2019.

The hire adds another staunch Democrat voice on global affairs to a pundit and anchor roster that is retooling in the second Trump administration. The official, the brother of Endeavor mogul Ari Emanuel, stepped down from the ambassadorship on January 14 a week ahead of the presidential transition.

Emanuel has already been appearing on CNN’s programming recently, including with Cristiane Amanpour in December and on State of the Union with Dana Bash after wrapping his diplomatic role in Tokyo. He’s also been keeping busy by writing Washington Post opinion columns,...

Greg Gutfeld Mocks Up What ‘Better Opportunities’ Await Andrea Mitchell, Jim Acosta and Chuck Todd | Video
Image
Greg Gutfeld celebrated the rapid dismantling of legacy media, imagining this week what “better opportunities” lie ahead for departing institutional figures like Andrea Mitchell, Jim Acosta and Chuck Todd.

The “Gutfeld!” host took the usual passing swipes at what are just a few examples of the departures, layoffs and ratings plunges that seem to be plaguing just about everyone in media – everyone but Fox News.

“The old guard is fleeing,” Gutfeld said in his Friday night monologue. “Andrea Mitchell says she’s bailing on MSNBC for better opportunities. And why not? I’m sure there’s a science museum somewhere that needs a medical skeleton.”

After scolding himself for the “terrible” joke, he moved on to Acosta.

“He just left CNN,” Gutfeld said, “a shock to CNN, who had no idea he still worked there.”

And then up popped a picture of former “Meet the Press” moderator Chuck Todd.

“And Chuck Todd is gone,...

Chuck Todd Exits NBC News in Latest Media Shakeup
Image
Veteran NBC News anchor and chief political analyst Chuck Todd is leaving the network, TheWrap has learned.

“There’s never a perfect time to leave a place that’s been a professional home for so long, but I’m pretty excited about a few new projects that are on the cusp of going from ‘pie in the sky’ to ‘near reality,’” Todd said in a memo to staff obtained by TheWrap on Friday. “So I’m grateful for the chance to get a jump start on my next chapter during this important moment.”

His update comes a few weeks after Semafor reported the former “Meet the Press” host had been looking at different news outlets to join. Todd said in his Friday memo that his “Chuck Toddcast” podcast would be “coming with me” to his next stop, for which he thanked NBC.

Anchor Jim Acosta Leaves CNN After 18 Years As Network Tries To Move To Center In Trump Era – ‘Don’t Give In To Lies,’ He Warns
Image
Hours after CNN Anchor Jim Acosta signed off for the last time on Jan. 28, he issued a warning to the public, “Don’t give in to the lies.”

A stark critic of Donald Trump, Acosta’s departure comes after he rejected the network’s proposal to move his 10 a.m. Et weekday slot news program to the midnight shift. CNN posed the time switch as an opportunity for Acosta to air prime time on the West Coast and be simulcast on CNN International. However, many critics have speculated that this proposed shift was an attempt by the network to pander to Trump by banishing Acosta to late-night.

Acosta, 53, delivered the announcement on his Tuesday show, saying, You may have heard some reports about me and this show, and after giving all of this some careful consideration and weighing in alternative time slots CNN offered me, I have decided to move on.

Fox News Posts Big Gains To Top January Ratings; MSNBC And CNN See Signs Of Viewer Return Following Post-Election Tune-Out
Image
Fox News topped the ratings in January, posting big gains from a year earlier, while MSNBC saw signs that viewers were coming back after a post-election tune-out.

In primetime, Fox News averaged 2.78 million viewers, up 40% from the same month a year earlier, while MSNBC averaged 734,000, down 33%, and CNN posted 522,000, down 14%. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 353,000, up 61%, compared to CNN with 118,000, down 5%, and MSNBC with 63,000, down 41%.

In total day, Fox News averaged 1.92 million viewers, up 53%, compared to MSNBC with 506,000, down 34%, and 421,000 for CNN, down 9%. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 253,000, up 70%, followed by CNN with 80,000, down 7%, and MSNBC with 45,000, down 42%.

Fox News’ rivals are pointing to month-to-month comparisons for signs that viewers are returning to the news cycles. There is a bit of a caveat, given the December holiday period generally sees a viewership dip, while January was a particularly busy news month.

MSNBC said that it averaged 1.3 million primetime viewers last week,...

Jim Acosta Confirms CNN Exit Live on-Air With Stern Final Statement: ‘Don’t Give Into the Lies’
Image
After weeks of rumors, anchor Jim Acosta confirmed his departure from CNN live on-air on Tuesday, January 28 with a strong message. “Don’t give into the lies,” he warned as he departed the network during the second week of President Donald Trump‘s second term. His statement was given after CNN announced a schedule overhaul for its programming. Last week, a Los Angeles Times report stated that Acosta was considering quitting the network after CNN boss Mark Thompson asked him to move his show to the graveyard shift. Acosta is one of CNN’s loudest critics of Trump, having become known for his fiery coverage as CNN’s Chief White House Correspondent during Trump’s first term. Acosta confirmed on Tuesday that he carefully considered moving to an alternative timeslot offered by CNN, but he “decided to move on.” The January 28 broadcast was his last at CNN after reporting for...

Jim Acosta Announces Departure From CNN With A Message: “It Is Never A Good Time To Bow Down To A Tyrant”

Updated, with additional comment: Jim Acosta told viewers this morning that he would be leaving CNN, departing after the network took his morning show off the schedule as part of an anchor shuffle.

“I’m grateful to CNN for the nearly 18 years I’ve spent here doing the news,” Acosta said. “People often ask me if the highlight of my career at CNN was at the White House, covering Donald Trump. Actually, no, that moment came here when I covered President Barack Obama’s trip to Cuba in 2016 and had the chance to question the dictator there, Raul Castro, about the island’s political prisoners as the son of a Cuban refugee. I took home this lesson — it is never a good time to bow down to a tyrant.”

Acosta started his media career in radio. By 1994, he broke into television, first working for a Fox affiliate. The following year, he would get his first on-camera job.

Starting in 2003, Acosta would serve as a correspondent for CBS News. During his time there, he would cover stories from the Iraq War to Hurricane Katrina.

Why CNN's Jim Acosta Is Exiting the Network
Image
CNN journalist Jim Acosta is reportedly going to exit the network amid changes that are coming.

There are lots of reports circulating around about what possibly might have happened. First, some backstory. Jim has been hosting a 10am news program for the news network, and previously, acted as CNN’s chief White House correspondent for the first Trump presidency. The White House actually revoked his press pass due to his butting heads with the President back in 2018.

Keep reading to find out more…

CNN apparently has decided to go through some changes. According to reports, Jim was offered to host a new evening show at midnight Et. This is apparently seen as a worse timeslot due to the time of day, and CNN previously aired reruns during this slot.

Deadline is reporting that Jim told CEO Mark Thompson that the timing of this change – as Trump just became President again – was “suspicious,...

Jim Acosta Signs Off From CNN: ‘Don’t Give In to the Lies’
Image
CNN reporter Jim Acosta on Tuesday morning said he is leaving the channel after declining to accept a new timeslot. Acosta made the announcement at the end of his 10:00 a.m. “CNN Newsroom” show.

“After giving all of this careful consideration and weighing an alternative timeslot CNN offered me, I’ve decided to move on,” Acosta said.

The longtime reporter — who gained notoriety in recent years for his combative relationship with President Donald Trump — thanked his crew and said he was “grateful” for his 18 years at the network. He said the highlight of his CNN run was not covering Trump, which many people ask him about, but rather when he went to Cuba in 2016 and was able to question Raúl Castro.

“Don’t give in to the lies, don’t give in to the fear,” Acosta said in his final plea to viewers. “Hold onto the truth — and to hope.

Image
CNN is losing one of its more high-profile anchors amid a larger programming pivot.

“Jim has had a long, distinguished nearly 20-year career at CNN, with a track record of standing up to authority, for the first amendment and for our journalistic freedoms,” said a CNN spokesperson in a statement. “We want to thank him for the dedication and commitment he’s brought to his reporting and wish him the very best in the future.”

Acosta also announced the news with an on-air signoff, “I just wanted to end today’s show by thanking all of the wonderful people who work behind the scenes at this network. You may have seen some reports about me and this show.

‘Morning Joe’ Critics Want Jim Acosta to Take Over After Rumored CNN Exit
Image
As rumors continue to circulate regarding Jim Acosta‘s potential exit from CNN, fans have taken to social media to suggest he move to MSNBC and take over the Morning Joe slot. The news comes after CNN announced it was changing up its schedule, which included replacing Acosta’s morning show with veteran anchor Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown for a two-hour edition of The Situation Room. Acosta was reportedly offered the midnight “graveyard” shift, which sources claimed he was shocked by. Acosta is now nowhere to be seen in CNN’s upcoming schedule, and reports from Oliver Darcy’s Status newsletter and Fox News claim the long-time anchor is set to depart the network. The veteran news reporter joined CNN in 2007, becoming the network’s chief White House correspondent in 2018. Throughout his time at CNN, Acosta was a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, with whom he has clashed...

Jim Acosta to Exit CNN to Pursue New Ventures
Image
Jim Acosta, the aggressive CNN correspondent who has gained notice for holding interview subjects to account from perches in the White House press room and on newsroom sets, is poised to leave the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet after a shake-up in its schedule that left him without anchoring duties during daytime hours.

Acosta is expected to inform viewers of the decision as soon as Tuesday when he ends his program, according to a person familiar with the matter. CNN declined to make executives available for comment. The Status newsletter reported on Monday night that Acosta had made a decision to exit.

CNN stood ready to keep Acosta employed, according to people familiar with the situation, but wanted to move him to non-traditional hours: between midnight and 2 a.m., a slot CNN has used in the past to show repeats of its primetime schedule for viewers on the west coast.

CNN’s Lineup Changes: The Flawed Thinking Behind Mark Thompson’s Latest Move | Analysis
Image
CNN made some key changes to its lineup on Thursday, including removing Jim Acosta, one of its best-known reporters, from his daily morning show. But will those tweaks be enough to win back viewers? Such improvement appears unlkely, as CEO Mark Thompson continues to seek a broader framework to address the formidable array of challenges plaguing CNN’s entire business model.

Yes, ditching Acosta — who has had a well-publicized contentious relationship with President Donald Trump, who reentered the White House this week — was a notable move, one that many will perceive as an olive branch to the new administration.

Still, the changes are more cosmetic than colossal: Jake Tapper, perhaps the network’s most respected anchor, saw his start time moved back an hour to 5 p.m. Et; Wolf Blitzer, who has been with the network since 1990, will now do his two-hour show in the morning instead of the evening...

CNN Shakeup: Jake Tapper, Wolf Blitzer Change Times, Jim Acosta Removed
Image
CNN made several changes to its lineup on Thursday, including giving longtime anchor Jake Tapper a new time slot and removing Jim Acosta from his morning show. Network veteran Wolf Blitzer is also being moved from broadcasting in the evening to the mornings as part of CNN’s shake up.

Tapper’s show “The Lead” is being moved an hour later, and will now air from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Et. each weekday. Acosta, who has had many memorable squabbles with President Donald Trump, will no longer host “CNN Newsroom” from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. during the week.

That time will now occupied by “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown,” which will air from 10:00 a.m. to noon Et. Blitzer had been broadcasting from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Et each night. Kasie Hunt is also getting a...

Jim Acosta May Quit CNN in Protest of Graveyard Shift Move: Report
Image
CNN anchor Jim Acosta is reportedly threatening to quit the network entirely rather than accept a move to the graveyard shift. The journalist, who currently appears at CNN’s 10 a.m. Et hour, was reportedly pitched a move to the “graveyard shift” (midnight to 2 a.m. Et) by CNN Chairman and Chief Executive Mark Thompson in a January 15 phone call. Acosta has been a fixture on CNN since 2007 but became known for his fiery critical coverage as the network’s Chief White House correspondent during President Donald Trump‘s first term. Now he could be on the outs, according to a report from The Los Angeles Times. The phone call was first reported by former CNN reporter Oliver Darcy’s Status newsletter. Two people familiar with the ongoing talks confirmed the discussions to LA Times. Acosta and a CNN representative declined to comment for LA Times‘ report. One anonymous source...

CNN Shakes Up TV Lineup With New Duties for Jake Tapper, Kasie Hunt, Wolf Blitzer, Audie Cornish, Rahel Solomon
Image
CNN is shaking up its TV schedule yet again as the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet grapples with significant declines in audience and a need to control costs in an era when more viewers are migrating to streaming media.

Under a series of changes unveiled Thursday, Audie Cornish, the former NPR host will take over the 6 a.m. “CNN This Morning,” while Rahel Solomon will lead a new 5 a.m. concept called “5 Things.” Jake Tapper’s late-day program will move to a two hour slot between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., setting up audiences for the primetime lineup, and Kasie Hunt will move from mornings to a 4 p.m. program called “The Arena.”

Wolf Blitzer will move out of the early evening slot he had held for years, paired instead with Pamela Brown at 10 a.m. CNN did not specify a new role for Jim Acosta, the no-nonsense anchor who has...

CNN to Slash 200 Jobs, Launch New Streaming Service in Post-Election Restructuring
Image
CNN announced Thursday morning that the network will be cutting about 200 staffers, roughly 6% of jobs, as they pivot towards digital post-election. This restructuring will also include a new streaming service, as well as changes to its linear lineup.

Still, despite these layoffs, CEO Mark Thompson noted they are also expected to fill 100 new jobs in the first half of 2025. Those roles come in part from a $70 million investment from Warner Bros. Discovery, according to The New York Times.

“The changes we’re announcing today are part of an ongoing response by this great news organization to profound and irreversible shifts in the way audiences in America and around the world consume news,” Thompson shared in a memo.

“It’s early days, but we’ve already established that there’s immense demand for it not just in America but across much of the world,” he added of the impending streaming service,...

CNN To Launch New Streaming Service As It Sets Sights On Digital Future; About 200 Jobs To Be Cut In Restructuring
Image
CNN is cutting about 200 jobs as it focuses on a digital future, the network said Thursday, while its CEO Mark Thompson unveiled plans for a new subscription streaming service.

In a memo to staffers, Thompson wrote, “Our objective is a simple one: to shift CNN’s gravity towards the platforms and products where the audience themselves are shifting and, by doing that, to secure CNN’s future as one of the world’s greatest news organizations. America and the world need high quality, fair-minded, trustworthy sources of news more than ever. This difficult and sometimes painful process of change is the only way to make sure we can still provide it.”

The changes also include ones to its network’s schedule, with The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown replacing Jim Acosta’s 10 a.m. Et show, and plans for a new morning show with Audie Cornish, according to The New York Times.

CNN May Move Jim Acosta To Midnight Et Slot, Sparking Concerns Over Timing As Donald Trump Takes Office
Image
CNN has told anchor Jim Acosta that they want to move him from his morning Et slot to midnight Et, a less high profile time period where cable news networks have traditionally run reruns of programming from earlier in the day.

Acosta has anchored a 10 am. Et show for almost a year, having moved from a weekend time slot. Acosta was told earlier this week that the network wanted to make the move as part of an anchor shuffle, according to a source. Status newsletter first reported on the potential move.

During Donald Trump’s first administration, Acosta was one of the most recognizable journalists on the beat as CNN’s chief White House correspondent. The president, irate over Acosta’s and the network’s coverage, often got into testy exchanges with him or berated him at press conferences and other events. At one point, the White House sought to revoke Acosta’s hard pass,...

CNN Could Face Backlash Over Potential Move of Jim Acosta
Image
Depending on who you ask, CNN anchor Jim Acosta is getting a chance to speak to a much broader audience with an assignment at a new and non-traditional time slot, or he’s being removed entirely from the usual daily discussion around the news.

Executives at CNN have asked Acosta to take a new role, anchoring a show that would air from midnight to 2 a.m. on the eastern coast of the U.S., according to two people familiar with the matter. Even so, the show has been pitched a chance to deliver live breaking news to audiences on the West coast and overseas at times when viewers in those regions are still active and craving information.

The offer was issued this week, according to these people, and Acosta, who gained a broader profile at CNN with his coverage of the White House during the first administration of President Donald Trump,...

CNN Reportedly Set to Move Outspoken Trump Critic Jim Acosta to ‘Graveyard Shift’
Image
CNN is reportedly shaking up its schedule by moving long-time news anchor and known Donald Trump critic Jim Acosta to “the graveyard shift.” According to a report in former CNN reporter Oliver Darcy’s Status newsletter, CNN chief Mark Thompson allegedly called Acosta on Wednesday night (January 15) to deliver a “strange proposal” that caught the veteran broadcaster off guard. “Thompson, I’m told, delivered the veteran journalist a sudden and strange proposal: Move your show to midnight and anchor it until 2am Et,” Darcy wrote, per Mediaite.com. Darcy claimed Acosta was taken aback by the request as “he had no reason to believe that his current show would be on the chopping block.” Darcy went on to say that Acosta was told the line-up change “had nothing to do with his ratings or the editorial style of his show,” but rather it was a logistical move to accommodate a new morning schedule.

CNN Eyes Moving Wolf Blitzer to Daytime Slot
Image
Wolf Blitzer may be getting ready to storm the morning on CNN.

The veteran anchor, who has led the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet’s “The Situation Room” in early evenings since 2005, could bring the program to mid-to-late mornings, according to a person familiar with the matter, under a set of new plans around programming and talent currently being considered by CNN.

A CNN spokesperson declined to comment. The Status newsletter previously reported on Blitzer’s potential move to a different time slot.

CNN, which is grappling with significant downturns in viewership, has long been mulling a set of maneuvers that will put more of a spotlight on digital content, and staffers have grown more anxious over what those ideas will portend. Layoffs have long been expected, according to two people familiar with the situation, along with new tweaks to the schedule of the company’s flagship cable network. There...
