BBC Hits AI Startup Perplexity With Legal Threat Over Content Scraping Concerns
Image
The BBC has sent a legal threat to Perplexity, citing allegations that the AI startup is scraping the British national broadcaster’s content.

In one of its first major copyright interventions in the AI age, the BBC claimed that Perplexity’s ChatGPT-style search tool was “trained using BBC content.”

The corporation outlined its concerns in a letter seen by the Financial Times newspaper. The BBC confirmed that a legal warning had been issued, but declined to comment beyond the contents of the letter.

The broadcaster demanded that San Francisco-based Perplexity cease its use of BBC content, deletes copies of material, and offers “financial compensation” for the alleged IP infringement.

Perplexity has been approached for comment. The company told the Ft that the BBC’s claims were “manipulative and opportunistic,” showcasing a “fundamental misunderstanding” of tech and IP laws.

Perplexity added that the BBC’s legal letter shows “how far the...

“Samantha’s Subham Is The Best Prescription for Laughter” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
For those of us who had given up on hearing the genuine sound of laughter in movie theatres, here is hope. Subham is a farm-fresh funny free-fall on the pitfalls of television-serial obsession circa the 1990s when Ekta Kapoor was the queen of home entertainment.

Subham could be seen as a slanted homage to Ekta Kapoor’s stronghold on television audiences at one time. I remember how addicted my 9-year-old daughter was to Kahani Ghar Ghar ki (8.30 pm weekdays), followed by Kyunki…Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi at 9 pm. She would throw a fit if, God and Ekta Kapoor (which were the one and the same when it came to televised offerings) frowned on the satellite space and if, gulp, the telecast of the nation’s hope-dope soap was affected.

This is the world director Praveen Kandregula and writer Vasanth Maringanti inhabit with liberating insouciance. There is an unsettling and...

Looking Back at Hansal Mehta’s Aligarh starring Manoj Bajpayee
Image
Hansal Mehta’s Aligarh, which featured Manoj Bajpayee and Rajkummar Rao, celebrates nine years since its release on the big screen. Subhash K Jha revisits the music and the movie.

In the acutely thought-provoking em>Aligarh, which is about a homosexual man’s right to privacy, Manoj Bajpayee playing the disgraced professor Shrinivas Ramchandra Sirus, sits alone in his dingy one-bedroom professor’s quarter, with a drink in hand and a Lata Mangeshkar song by his side.

In the semi-darkness, in a room lit by dim hope, Srinivas listens to the Melody Queen’s ‘Aap ki nazron nesamjha pyaar ke qaabil mujhe’, that timeless Madan Mohan composition from the film Anpadh. The song plays on a rickety portable sound machine. But its sound resonates across the professor’s silent universe, like a melodic meteor cutting through a sky of solitude.

It’s a life-defining moment. Director Hansal Mehta holds the...

Preeti Panigrahi in Girls Will Be Girls (2024)
10 Best Movies That Poignantly Explore Girlhood
Preeti Panigrahi in Girls Will Be Girls (2024)
Coming-of-age narratives have long been a staple of cinema. The triumphs and turbulences young people go through on their way from adolescence to adulthood often make for uniquely relatable and interesting watches. The adolescent years are often times of great change and confusion, and films that portray that well can be incredibly cathartic to watch. Coming-of-age films centering on girls often deal with, besides the usual topics of growth, change, ambition, relationships, etc, confrontations with gendered expectations and societal standards. Of course, these experiences vary a lot based on culture, socio-economic status, and circumstance, and so I’ve included a wide range of picks across different languages for this list. Most of these movies that explore girlhood are also directed by women, which brings in a sense of authenticity in depiction.

1. Girls Will Be Girls (2024)

“Girls Will Be Girls, A Powerful Flawed Feminal Gem To End The Year With” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Director Shuchi Talati’s directorial debut Girls Will Be Girls ,now streaming on Prime Video, is a bit of an event. Just when we thought women were done saying whatever they had to, here comes a yummy year-ender.

Tender, thoughtful, forthright—sometimes embarrassingly so—and forever moving at its own volition, Girls Will Be Girls is a rarity: a film about women that doesn’t waste time pointing fingers at men for the flaws in gender dynamics.

Straightaway, lets give the devis their due in this slender and sensitive mother-daughter fable. Though Kani Kusruti and newcomer Preeti Panigrahi don’t look like mother and daughter—they don’t have to, I concede that—their creative commonality creeps out of every frame. These two playing mom Anila and daughter Mira, know one another in and out. The dramatic tension that flows symbiotically is just an organic offshoot of a relationship that...

Preeti Panigrahi in Girls Will Be Girls (2024)
‘Girls Will Be Girls’ is Shuchi Talati’s Intimate Love Letter to Girlhood & Those Who Missed Out on Theirs
Preeti Panigrahi in Girls Will Be Girls (2024)
“Girls Will Be Girls” (2024) marks an illustrious debut feature by Shuchi Talati— a homage to the yearning and gravity of girlhood against the backdrop of a meticulously structured Himachali co-educational institution. Talati artfully navigates the labyrinthine landscape of academic rivalries, illicit romantic encounters, drab uniforms, and the ever-present specter of disciplinary retribution. Employing the intimate confines of the 4:3 aspect ratio, Talati engages in the somber and often heartbreaking realities confronting women whose sexualities have been generationally stifled. With a deft hand, “Girls Will Be Girls” offers a dignity often denied to women protagonists treading sexual transgressions.

The film eschews simplistic moral judgments, neither vindicating nor demonizing their choices. Instead, it astutely posits that shame itself is the primary antagonist that stifles sexual expression and authenticity. Produced by Ali Fazal and Richa Chadha, this debut feature pulses unmistakably with female gaze. The influence of its predominantly female crew is keenly felt,...

Perplexity CEO Speaks at News Corp. Event Days After Lawsuit: “Let’s Talk About the Elephant in the Room”
Image
On Monday, News Corp. filed a lawsuit against the artificial intelligence firm Perplexity, arguing that the AI-generated search company infringed on its copyrights by ingesting its work and repackaging it to its users.

On Wednesday, Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas appeared at a News Corp. conference, where he sought to address “the elephant in the room” right at the top of his conversation.

Srinivas was interviewed at the WSJ Tech conference, which is hosted by News Corp.’s flagship publication The Wall Street Journal. “They’re not the only publishers like that are worried about the AI products that are surfacing their content on their answers,” Srinivas said of the Journal.

“I would say that they reached out around June to talk to us, and we responded to them and said we are also open to talking to them, and are interested in a proper commercial discussion on how to use...

Girls Will Be Girls Review: A Blistering, Two-Generational Coming-of-Age Journey
Arundhati Roy
“And the air was full of Thoughts and Things to Say. But at times like these, only the Small Things are ever said. Big Things lurk unsaid inside.” Those words, from Arundhati Roy’s 1997 novel The God of Small Things, come to mind while watching Shuchi Talati’s Girls Will Be Girls, a coming-of-age tale about a teenage girl who’s trying to navigate her newfound romantic feelings, burgeoning sexual desires, and longstanding familial tensions in a society where none of these things can be spoken about openly. Through its tender storytelling, complex characters, and intimate, tactile camerawork, Talati’s impressive debut feature manages to make all of these unspoken elements ring out loud and clear.

Sixteen-year-old Mira (Preeti Panigrahi) is the star student at a strict boarding school nestled in the Himalayan foothills. She’s the first female Head Prefect in the school’s history, thanks to both her...

‘Girls Will Be Girls’ Review: Coming of Age in an Indian Boarding School
Image
A mother and daughter both come of age in “Girls Will Be Girls,” Shuchi Talati’s gentle English-Hindi high school drama set in the Himalayan foothills. In this engrossing feature debut about angst and desire, the draconian Indian boarding school setting robs its teen protagonist of the language to express (or fully understand) her burgeoning sexuality. Talati, however, fills in those wordless blanks with images both graceful and precise, yielding breathtaking tension when the boundaries between her mother and her boyfriend begin to blur.

At the start of 12th grade, 16-year-old Mira (Preeti Panigrahi) is the first girl at her institution ever named Head Prefect, a title earned for her impeccable academic record. The prestigious appointment comes with duties that involve reprimanding her friends and peers, either because their uniforms aren’t up to code, or because the girls have been spending too much time hanging around the boys (who...

‘Koose Munisamy Veerappan’ Recap & Review: An Explicit Tale Of India’s Most Wanted Man
Image
For many of our generation and before, the name Veerappan was synonymous with terror and fear. It would remind cinemagoers of Gabbar Singh in the cult classic film Sholay, who rolled out intimidation tactics through his actions. The difference would be that Veerappan existed in flesh and blood. He created a sense of fear in the Andhra-Karnataka-Kerala-Tamil Nadu region from the late 1980s until the 2000s, and no government could find a way to make him abandon his life of crime. Directed by Sharath Jothi, Koose Munisamy Veerappan, the Zee5 documentary chronicles the life of the dreaded sandalwood smuggler Veerappan, from being a mere thief to living the life of a criminal in the deep forests of South India.

Recap: What Happens In the Documentary?

This is a six-part documentary series based on the footage captured by the veteran journalist Nakkheeran Gopal, who extensively interviewed the smuggler and eventually acted...
