Got Talent producer Fremantle has seen its half-year revenue fall 5.4%, as parent Rtl posted a mixed interim results in which streaming shone but sales and profits fell.

Fremantle’s revenue for H1 came in at €905M ($1.05B), down from €957M for the same period a year ago. This was attributed to lower revenue from the U.S. and “phasing effects,” and was partially offset by bringing Asacha Media Group into the fold.

In the U.S., the drop had been expected as 2024’s numbers had benefitted from America’s Got Talent spin-off America’s Got Talent: Fantasy League.

However, Fremantle’s adjusted Ebitda, which Rtl noted was the metric most of the production business’s rivals use, increased 7.2%, without breaking out numbers.

Adjusted Ebita dropped 7% to €160 million ($186 million), with lower TV advertising revenue partly offset by sharply reduced streaming start-up losses, down 59.5% to €34 million ($39.6 million). Group profit fell to €59 million ($68.7 million) from €173 million ($201.7 million) a year earlier, mainly due to one-time effects and fewer positive fair value adjustments.

The brutal rape and murder of four teenage girls at an Austin, Texas frozen yogurt shop is the subject of Margaret Brown’s HBO docuseries “The Yogurt Shop Murders.”

The 1991 slayings of Amy Ayers, sisters Jennifer Harbison and Sarah Harbison, and Eliza Thomas mystified police, haunted the victim’s families, and eventually became “part of the fabric of Austin,” according to Brown.

“It’s something you can’t really get away from in Austin,” said Brown.

Although Brown (“Descendant”) knew about the crime, the idea for a four-part docuseries came from Emma Stone and her husband Dave McCary, who used to live in Austin. The couple brought the docuseries to A24 to produce.

Brown spent over three years interviewing the crime’s investigative teams and the victims’ parents and siblings. The director and her producing team also tracked down interrogation room footage of four teenaged boys who served time for the crime.

Fremantle’s first quarter revenue fell 5.6% as the Got Talent maker’s parent Rtl blamed “budget cuts at broadcasters and streamers.”

Sales were down to €373M ($418M) in the three months to March this year. The figure for the same period in 2024 was €395M.

The falls were partially offset by the acquisition of France-based Asacha Media Group, which added the likes of Death in Paradise producer Red Planet, Arrow Media and Italy’s Stand By Me into the Fremantle fold.

T.S. Eliot said April was the cruelest month, but that’s hardly the case for this April 2025, when Dea Kulumbegashvili’s shattering new drama “April” finally opens.

Ok, to be fair, “April” is a cruel film, set in a remote Georgian village, where a revered obstetrician is accused of malpractice and ostracized by her townspeople after a baby dies on the delivery table. Meanwhile, she provides illegal abortions for the village’s broken, young, and helpless women. IndieWire shares the exclusive trailer below for the film, which won a Venice Film Festival 2024 special prize from a jury headed up by none other than Isabelle Huppert. Rising distributor Metrograph Pictures, which also operates a brick-and-mortar theater in Lower Manhattan, opens the film in select cities on April 25.

“April” reunites Kulumbegasvhili with actress Ia Sukhitashvili, who starred in the director’s 2020 breakout “Beginning,” about religious extremism and abuse, also set in a Georgian village.

Fruit Tree, the production company set up by Emma Stone and her husband Dave McCary that has worked on projects include Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ upcoming “Bugonia,” has signed a first-look and development deal for TV with Fremantle.

Under the partnership, Fremantle — which has already signed similar deals with a growing number of major names — will become the primary home for all of Fruit Tree’s scripted television projects and unscripted docuseries, with the company looking to grow its slate and expand overseas will help from Fremantle’s global drama division.

The deal will see Fremantle become the primary home for the company’s scripted TV projects and unscripted docuseries, with Fruit Tree working with the company’s global drama division and international distribution team to grow its slate and expand into new territories worldwide.

Founded in August 2020, Fruit Tree’s TV projects include Showtime’s “The Curse,” which Stone starred in alongside co-creators Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, and HBO’s “Fantasmas,” a six-episode surrealist comedy starring creator Julio Torres. Its next TV project will be the HBO documentary series “The Yogurt Shop Murders” directed by Margaret Brown.

Meanwhile, Fruite Free’s film slate includes Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain,” Torres’ “Problemista” and Jane Schoenbrun’s “I Saw the TV Glow.

Fremantle has locked a first-look TV deal with Fruit Tree, the production label run by two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone (Poor Things) and Dave McCary (Saturday Night Live).

Fremantle has said that under the pact, it will be the primary home for all Fruit Tree scripted television projects and unscripted docuseries, with Fremantle’s global drama division and international distribution team consulting closely on the company’s slate.

The pair previously had a first-look TV deal at A24.

Lorenzo De Maio, President of De Maio Entertainment, initially brought the idea of partnering with Fruit Tree to Fremantle. He will oversee the partnership alongside Christian Vesper, Fremantle’s CEO Global Drama and Film, and Seb Shorr, Fremantle’s COO of Global Drama and Film. Emma Stone and Dave McCary made it a date night at the 2025 Academy Awards on Sunday (March 2) at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

The 36-year-old actress will be presenting on stage tonight. As last year’s Best Actress winner, she is continuing the tradition of former winners presenting to the new acting nominees.

The Oscars will be hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien for the first time and the show is airing live on ABC and Hulu. Anora continues to pick up speed heading into the Oscars, scoring Critics Choice Awards and DGA wins and snagging a Best Feature win at the Film Independent Spirit Awards. Anora also captured Best Director (Sean Baker) and Best Lead Performance (Mikey Madison) wins. A Real Pain and Didi each earned two awards during the February 22, 2025 Spirit Awards ceremony hosted by Aidy Bryant.

On the television side, Baby Reindeer dominated with three wins. Though its timing has changed over the years, the Film Independent Spirit Awards still marks the final turn toward the finish line of awards season, putting a spotlight on both the films that are major Oscar contenders, as well as the projects that prove great cinema can be made at the most micro of budgets.

The 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards have wrapped! And now we know, as the full winners list for the Spirit Awards has been revealed, just how much momentum “Anora” has going into the Oscars: a lot. It already got the most Spirits nominations with six, and it ended up winning Best Feature, Best Director for Sean Baker, and Best Lead Performance for Mikey Madison.

Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Performance for “A Real Pain,” which also won Best Screenplay. “No Other Land” won Best Documentary, and the extraordinary animated film “Flow” won Best International feature.

“Baby Reindeer” collected the most prizes on the TV side with Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series going to Richard Gadd, Jessica Gunning won Best Breakthrough Performance in a New Scripted Series, and Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series went to Nava Rau. “Shogun” won Best New Scripted Series.

For the event, Emma, 36, wore a black top with a green skirt while Dave, 39, sported a dark brown suit and tan shirt.

If you didn’t know, Emma and Dave are producers on I Saw the TV Glow, which is nominated Best Feature.

They were joined on the blue carpet by their producing partners Kevin Kelly and Ali Herting.

Every now and then "Saturday Night Live" really surprises me with its castings. Giving Sarah Sherman (better known to the alt-comedy community as Sarah Squirm) a spot on the roster was one example, while Kyle Mooney and Beck Bennett's 2013 casting remains one of the best decisions Lorne Michaels ever made.
