In the late 2010s, if you needed a leading man for a brains-off action/adventure movie, you called one person: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's agent. For a solid 5 years, The Rock was a fixture of movies that, at one time, would have been the perfect "sick on a Saturday" TNT rock block of entertainment. One of these popcorn flicks is 2018's Skyscraper, which is currently climbing the streaming charts. Skyscraper finds Johnson starring as Will Sawyer, a former FBI agent and amputee who, after injuries sustained while on a hostage rescue mission, becomes a security consultant for high-rise buildings. Assassin leads us, admittedly poignantly, to the terrible conclusion that a science fiction film can be anything but pedestrian.

And this one has that terrible flaw – that it contains no new ideas other than in its initial premise.

Best-known for her action roles in “Skyscraper,” with Dwayne Johnson, and Simon West’s “Skyfire,” Asian star Hannah Quinlivan has joined director Jesse Atlas’s sci-fi feature “Soul Assassin.”

The film’s ensemble cast also includes Bruce Willis, Andy Allo, Nomzamo Mbatha, Dominic Purcell and Mustafa Shakir.

Atlas’ feature debut, “Soul Assassin” is described as a female-led, mind-bending sci-fi thriller. In it, a female former black ops soldier joins an experimental drone warfare program to hunt down her husband’s killer. When the technology is stolen, however, the hunter becomes the hunted.

“This is a groundbreaking genre film bound to be an audience favorite and an international dream cast of both veterans and rising stars adds even more appeal,” said Atlas, who wrote “Soul Assassin” along with Aaron Wolfe, based on their short film “Let Them Die Like Lovers.”

It’s no great leap forward in filmmaking, but the big-budget disaster movie “Skyfire” does prove that China is now capable of producing its own brand of utterly preposterous and enjoyably trashy popcorn entertainment for a global audience. This thrill-packed tale about an angry volcano wreaking havoc on thinly written characters at a luxury island resort plays like a souped-up and much better remake of Irwin Allen’s 1980 turkey “When Time Ran Out.” Starring a predominantly Chinese cast and energetically directed by British action specialist Simon West, “Skyfire” did Ok without setting the Chinese box-office alight in December 2019 release. It should be a hot number with action fans when launched on VOD in North America by Screen Media on Jan. 12.

While several recent Chinese productions including “The Wandering Earth,” “The Captain” and “The Bravest” have depicted large-scale calamities, none have embraced the tried-and-true disaster movie format with the unashamed reverence and gusto of “Skyfire.

Li Meng (Hannah Quinlivan) has a thing about eruptions. One killed her mother - as we see in the prologue here - and she has devoted her life to preventing further such horrors, developing new technology to predict them and even going inside a crater to position the censors that will make it work. Her father (Wang Xueqi), having already lost one loved one, wants her to stop, which has created a rift between them - but a bigger problem is ambitious developer Jack Harris (Jason Isaacs), who just doesn't take the danger seriously. If you thought building a theme park full of live dinosaurs was a bad idea, wait until you see this theme park built around an active volcano.

To be fair, Kilauea tourism has been popular for decades, but that's a rather different proposition. Whereas the Hawaiian volcano smoulders away in a consistent manner, with multiple outlets for.

Chinese-produced disaster movie proceeds on strictly generic lines, as a volcano theme park is imperilled by an actual eruption

‘This might be the safest place on Earth!” Uh oh. A flamboyant entrepreneur is reassuring a group of tourists in a glass elevator at his volcano theme park – built on an active volcano in the Pacific Rim. The tourists are about to descend 150 metres inside the volcano. A cute kid pushes her nose up against the glass in wide-eyed wonder. Double uh oh.

Skyfire is China’s first big budget disaster movie, an earnest emotional blockbuster with disappointing special effects that barely register on the Richter scale of excitement. What it does have, however, is a credible female hero in the Tom-Cruise-dangling-out-of-a-helicopter-in-Ray-Bans mould. She is Meng Li (Hannah Quinlivan), a hot-headed young volcanologist who works at the theme park. When the volcano suddenly erupted 20 or so years ago, it killed her scientist mother.

Screen Media has bought all North American rights to “Skyfire,” China’s first big-budget disaster movie, from Highland Film Group and plans to release the film in theaters and on demand in December.

“Skyfire” is directed by Simon West and stars Jason Isaacs (“Hotel Mumbai”), Hannah Quinlivan (“Skyscraper”), Xueqi Wang (“Iron Man 3”) and Shawn Dou (“Wolf Totem”). The film is produced by Meridian Entertainment and topped the box office in China when it debuted in December on its way to a $24 million cumulative take.

“Skyfire” centers on chaos erupting when the once dormant volcano at the world’s only volcano theme park and resort starts to rumble. Quinlivan portrays a young scientist who attempts to convince the resort owner, played by Isaacs, to evacuate the island before it is too late.

“Skyfire,” a Chinese disaster movie directed by “Con-Air” director Simon West, will get an American theatrical release later this year, as Screen Media has acquired the North American rights to the film, the distributor announced Thursday. “Skyfire” opened in China in December 2019 and climbed as high as #2 at the Chinese box office, grossing $24.2 million in the region, and Screen Media will now give it a domestic theatrical release and on-demand in December. Simon West (Con Air and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and The Expendables 2) directed the English-language film, which debuted in China in December 2019.

Xueqi Wang and Shawn Dou round out the key cast on the story of a young scientist who tries to convince a resort owner to evacuate the world’s only volcano theme park when the once dormant geological feature shows signs of erupting.

Screen Media has acquired all North American rights to the Simon West-directed Skyfire. The action disaster movie is slated for a domestic theatrical and on-demand release in December 2020.

Jason Isaacs, Hannah Quinlivan (Skyscraper), Xueqi Wang (Iron Man 3) and Shawn Dou (Wolf Totem) star in the pic that sees chaos erupt when the once dormant volcano at the world’s only volcano theme park and resort, located in the Pacific Rim’s “Ring of Fire,” starts to rumble. Chinese-based companies Meridian Entertainment and Base FX are shopping “Skyfire” at Cannes, China’s first big-budget disaster movie, about a volcanic eruption. The film is directed by British helmer Simon West and stars Britain’s Jason Isaacs, Wang Xueqi (“Iron Man 3”), Shawn Dou (“Wolf Totem”) and Hannah Quinlivan (“Skyscraper”).

“Just as ‘The Wandering Earth’ was the breakout film for the sci-fi genre, we hope ‘Skyfire’ can do the same for the disaster genre,” Meridian’s CEO Jennifer Dong told Variety. “The China market is finally sufficiently large that it can support the making of a big-budget special effects film like this one just for the local market, yet this kind of VFX-heavy film is also something that viewers worldwide can understand and appreciate. We hope we’ve shot a Chinese film for a global audience.”

The film tells the story of people at a tropical resort who get caught up in a volcanic explosion.

With casting seemingly underway for the long-awaited Black Widow solo movie, That Hashtag Show has been offering quite a few reports lately on actors in the running to join the McU.

In the latest such piece, for instance, it’s said that Marvel Studios is on the lookout for a woman of color in the 15-25 age range for a “small, supporting role.” The report adds that the character was only just recently added to the script as part of the rewrites from The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby scribe Ned Benson.

Though the report stresses that Marvel is still “very early in the process,” it’s said that the studio has so far expressed an interest in Storm Reid (A Wrinkle in Time), Isabela Moner, Camila Mendes (Riverdale) and Hannah Quinlivan (Skyscraper), among others.

In an age of remakes, reboots, and rehashes, it’s suddenly become refreshing to see homage — especially the self-aware kind. If you’ve seen the alternate posters for Rawson Marshall Thurber’s Skyscraper that crib off the designs of Die Hard and The Towering Inferno, you understand how the filmmakers have embraced comparison due to their love for those genre classics. It’s this love that allows them to take a step back and create their own story in those images, at once honoring the past, updating for the present, and creating something wholly new. Nobody going to see the comedic-minded Thurber’s foray into straight dramatic thrills is doing so with the intent to be blown away by anything more than the special effects, crazy stunts, and tailor-made sets for mayhem.

The Rock has debuted some awesome vintage-style posters for his upcoming movie Skyscraper. The wrestler-turned-actor has not been shy in declaring that this particular blockbuster, though not based on anything specific, was directly inspired by a couple of classic action thrillers; 1988's Die Hard and 1974's The Towering Inferno. In order to pay homage to those movies, Dwayne Johnson has debuted a pair of new posters that directly channel those classics.

Taking to social media, Dwayne Johnson shared the pair of posters, just ahead of the debut of the final trailer for Skyscraper. According to his caption, it sounds like these posters were actually his idea and he's not shy about declaring his love and respect for Bruce Willis, Steve McQueen and Paul Newman. We saw the first glimpses of the Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson-led parody homage to 1980’s action movies in the film’s Super Bowl Trailer just a few days ago, but now the first full-length trailer gives a better look at what’s to come with ‘Skyscraper‘. The film stars The Rock as a U.S. war veteran how now serves as a security expert for skyscrapers. Universal Pictures has released the first poster for their highly-anticipated action-thriller Skyscraper, as we get closer and closer to the first trailer debuting during the Super Bowl this coming Sunday. This poster comes a day after the first Super Bowl trailer preview revealed the first footage, which showcased Dwayne Johnson's character Will Sawyer telling a group of executives that their skyscraper known as The Pearl, the tallest building in the world at 3,500 feet tall, presents an astronomical amount of security and safety issues. As you can see in the poster below, one of those issues is the entire building can be set on fire.

What's interesting about this poster is it's quite similar to a recently released photo from Mission: Impossible - Fallout, which shows Tom Cruise leaping from one building to another. The big difference is The Rock is much, much higher off the ground, and the building...

Exclusive: UK director Charles Martin directs Shanghai set action-adventure.

Imr International — the La-based joint sales venture of Insiders’ Vincent Maraval and MadRivers Pictures’ Marc Butan and Kim Fox - is launching sales at the Afm on Shanghai-set action-adventure S.M.A.R.T. Chase: Fire and Earth starring Orlando Bloom.

Bloom plays a private security agent who is hired to escort a valuable Chinese antique out of Shanghai but is ambushed before accomplishing the mission, endangering the woman he loves and putting his reputation on the line.

Against the odds, he needs to outsmart the mastermind of the theft and evade the Shanghai police at the same time.

UK director Charles Martin directed the production which recently wrapped in Shanghai.

Other cast members include Hong Kong star Simon Yam, popular model-actress Hannah Quinlivan (Gentle Bullet), actress Lynn Hung, teenage heart-throb Lei Wu (The Wonder) and martial arts artist Yanneng Shi.
