He doesn’t understand why he didn’t tell him about Kenneth so they could properly protect their kids. And there are elements of this story that Smitty doesn’t agree with.

Well, that lived up to the hype. After cancelling the press conference, Martin questioned everything about Kenneth’s death. He’ll have feelings on that later. First, he needed to get home to his family. In the Wednesday, July 16 episode of Beyond the Gates, Martin and Smitty finally had the talk they should have had months ago. The story was what we all suspected. But to hear the firsthand account was compelling and painful.

Facing His Family

Martin (Brandon Claybon) walked into his home, and he immediately saw the bags that Smitty (Mike Manning) had packed for him. Yes, he was super close to being thrown out of the house because of his lies and his subterfuge.

But he told Smitty he was ready to tell the truth. And what a truth that was. The scenes where Martin told Smitty the story of two years ago were emotional, enlightening, and tragic.

Martin (Brandon Claybon) seemed determined to confess the truth behind what happened two years ago. Although part of us wondered that when he started his press conference that what he really was going to do was resign from his political gig. He would make that sacrifice for his family and to keep that secret hidden. A secret that might involve a hate crime of sorts, and him defending himself and Vernon (Clifton Davis) from the hate crime? To which he wouldn’t be the bad guy, would he, Kenneth?

We have been waiting since the first week of Btg to find out what it is. It is a long time coming, and ultimately, Martin (Brandon Claybon) has no other chess moves. It’s either confess everything or start losing the parts of his life that mean the most to him.

On Wednesday, June 16, Martin reveals the truth about what happened two years ago. But even before that, Martin witnesses the bigoted busboy sitting next to and conversing with his daughter, Samantha (Najah Jackson). This is after Tyrell (Jaden Lucas Miller) let Kenneth in their door. The walls are closing in.
